In doing research for the error codes on Windows updates, i came accross this thread.  Rather than post the solutions just follow the thread: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/6ea0b5f6-9e66-401e-ae3a-4822b6c5b735/...
The comments for Windows update failures also indicate disabling the firewall software, which I do not see the name of the one being used.  Evidently some firewalls do not recognize Windows updates as a legit procedure.  "Zero Access Root Kit" was mentioned in that failure, also.  Maybe it is not all gone yet.
Actually I do not use Microsft Essentials, but found this; http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/protect/forum/mse-protect_start/mse-installation-failure-with-err...
Good luck - virus & malware removal is always a challenge.

dvd/cd drive works but won't allow me to install new programs from disk, doesn't recognize the disk, what can I do?

Well I was able to obtain a work around download of Flash and it installed fine but Firefox tells me it needs updating so I go out, thinking I'm "IN" finally to update it and I get that issue of not being able to get the update for it.  It's a regular laptop, not a touch screen or one of those new fangled ones for todays world.  In fact it's a refurb so it's probably origin date was a year or so ago before all this MS stuff took off fully.  So not understanding why I'm feeling like I'm being BLOCKED from getting the updated Flash I need and desire.  If I click on the little "X" and tell it to ignore the warning the vid will play just fine but don't want to have to do that every time.  Must be a better way.
Again, I'm sorry for posting in the wrong forum, getting this posted in the Flash forum was my desire but the way Adobe has this set up I just couldn't figure it out.  I belong to ALLOT of forums and most are pretty straight forward but this one is confusing!

Have you tried restarting the iPad or resetting it and then try to update?
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This should not matter - but at this point you might as well try this as well. Close all apps, restart the iPad and then try to update again.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button. Restart the iPad.

I bought a second hand MacBook Air and it won't allow me to install updates as up pops the previous owners log in details. How do I go about amending this?

The seller was remiss in not properly preparing the Mac for sale. That task has now fallen to you. You will encounter continual problems until you perform the following. Ignore references to DVD since the MacBook Air has none.
If you are unable to do that contact the seller and request instructions, or arrange for its return and a refund of your costs.
Refer to What to do before selling or giving away your Mac
If you enabled FileVault, disable it in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.
"Deauthorize" your iTunes account. Same for Audible if you have one.
System Preferences > iCloud > de-select "Back to My Mac" and "Find my Mac".
Sign out of iCloud. Select "Delete from Mac" when it appears.
Next: Remove all your personal information by completely erasing the Mac's internal storage.
If your Mac shipped with a grey System Install DVD, start your Mac with that disc inserted in the optical drive while holding the c key to boot from it instead of its internal volume, which should be erased before selling it.
If your Mac did not ship with discs, boot OS X Internet Recovery:
using three fingers press and hold the following keys: ⌘(command), option, and R.
With a fourth finger press the power button to turn on the Mac.
Keep the other three fingers where they are until you see the "spinning globe" icon.
This method forces the Mac to download its originally installed OS from Apple's servers, which will not require an Apple ID to install.
Remove any Open Firmware password if you created one: select Firmware Password Utility from the Utilities menu and remove it.
Select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
Remove any partitions you may have created.
Select the Mac's hard disk icon, then select the "Erase" tab.
Select the "Security Options" button and erase the disk.
The more "securely" you erase the disk, the longer it will take.
The fastest method is sufficient since all but the most expensive techniques and equipment will be able to recover securely erased data.
When it finishes, quit Disk Utility.
Select Install Mac OS X from the Utilities menu.
An Apple ID will not be required. If a prompt for an Apple ID appears, return to Step 5.
Do not create any user accounts.
When it finishes, shut down the computer.
If you want to install the bundled apps that were included with your Mac, restart by using your Applications DVD if one was included, and install the bundled apps. Apps bundled with newer Macs that shipped without discs cannot be transferred. Its new owner must purchase them from the Mac App Store using his or her own Apple ID.
If the Mac is being sold to someone outside the family consider the following additional information:
System Install DVDs that came with your Mac should remain with it forever, and must be included with the sale.
Consider including your AppleCare certificate if you bought it, printed documentation, even the box if you still have it. AppleCare stays with the equipment and is transferable.
Execute a bill of sale showing the Mac's serial number.
Once no longer in your possession, remove the Mac from your devices in My Support Profile.

  • Just bought Quicktime Pro, can't load into V10, but won't allow me to install V7 with V10 Present.

OK I video'd my bands latest gig on the weekends using I-Movie, but when played back on I-movie, the video / Audio are over 10 seconds out of sync.  Common Problem apparently, however on Quicktime it runs smoothly, so I was told I need to edit it in Quicktime Pro.  Easier said that done.  Quicktime Pro is only available for V7, I have V10 installed, and it will not allow me to install V7 when V10 is installed. Already paid for the rego, so not Freaking impressed with Apple having such a F..d up system in place where they do not keep the Pro version up to date with the free version.  What do I do?

There is a version of 7 that works with 10.  Does this link help?

  • My Mac Mini won't allow me to install a new image (2011, i5)

Hello. My original HDD for my Mac Mini died so I replaced it with a new one. I have downloaded Mavericks and 'burned' the image to a USB stick. When I turn the Mac Mini on and hold down 'Option' to get to the selection screen, I choose the Mavericks image and then this happens:
    http://i.imgur.com/69wIn63.jpg
    http://i.imgur.com/n7KXDH8.jpg
It won't allow safe boot, either.
Any clue as to what I can do to remedy this? I really need the machine back up and running as I do all of my development on there. Thank you in advance.

I created a bootable USB stick with a Mavericks image I downloaded from the App store. I was able to reimage my Macbook just fine; my MacMini kept throwing the above error. I've attempted to boot the MacMini and do a 'Command + R' and partition the HDD, erase it, and download Mavericks directly online, but when it seems to be working, it reboots and gives me a folder icon with a '?' in it. I'm kind of stuck and getting quite aggravated

  • Bootcamp won't allow me to install windows 7 32bit

    hello everyone,
so i am having quite a big problem at the moment. i almost tried everything but it seems like my mac won't let me install windows 7 32 bit.
first i tried to do it with the install disc but for somehow my mac keeps ejecting it but other discs run fine. now my macbook has no problem with it so i put it in firewire mode and tried to run the disc from there and just make the partition myself. so i partitioned by disc with (fat) but when i try to run the windows disc in boot mode it says there aren't any bootable devices. also i am unable to see my partition in the boot mode but it does show up on my desktop. now after some research on the internet i tried to make an .iso image from the disc and put it on a usb and my desktop, now bootcamp won't recoqnise it and it also doesn't have this 'make a install disc from .iso image' or something in that direction. so i am really stuck at the moment, the only solution i can think of is downgrading my bootcamp to bootcamp 4 so i do have this iso image option. it is really frustrating
    help is appriciated.
    best regards,
    stan
(sorry for no caps my caplock button is brooke)

Follow the Boot Camp 5.x FAQ and HOW TO and the pdf guide and instructions in Boot Camp Assistant.
Then use Windows 7 64-bit. No one today should be using 32-bit, unless maybe in a VM, but not when running Windows natively.

  • Google Play won't allow me to install Firefox onto my Motorola Xoom

When I attempt to install Firefox on my Motorola Xoom I am met with the follow message: This item is not compatible with your device.
Is there a reason for this?

Unfortunately, Firefox for mobile does not support tablets (such as the Xoom) yet. The developers are actively working on adding tablet support. You can help test an [https://wiki.mozilla.org/Mobile/Platforms/Android#Download_Aurora Aurora build] but you may encounter stability issues, among other issues. It should not be considered a replacement for your primary browser.
You may need to allow installation of non-Market apps.

  • Virus won't allow me to install programs

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please I"m growing new gray hair everyday, and they're falling out from my issues. I'm a grandmother on disability and cannot afford to pay for anti-virus programs, so I thought I had resolved problem with microsoft essentials, but I also had other anti-virus programs running at the same time. It was not until sometime later, that I was informed this could cause me more problems. Boy was that ever the truth, so I began unstalling programs, and somewhere down the line I left myself open for a virus attack, which now leads me to where I'm today. Since around March or April I have been trying everything I could think of as well as contacing family and friends for their advice with this matter. The bottom line is virus will not allow me to complete and download and install any program to remove it. I get message that program has a virus and has been deleted. I have tried recovery, but that has not seem to work either. I'm trying to find work from home, and really need to resolve this. Oh Yeah!! Sometime back my email was sending out crazy emails to my contacts. I think that's where I contracted the virus from. I have talked to tech's and they want $50.00 - $100.00 dollars. Believe me I don't have it. Please help. I will be enternally grateful.

  • Grey screen won't allow me to install Leopard from install DVD

I'm trying to do a fresh installation of Leopard on my Mac Pro. I have used the Leopard install DVD previously to install to this machine when Leopard was first released and I had no problem then. Now, the machine boots and I can hear it reading from the DVD. On screen is the apple sign and the rotating symbol underneath it. After a while I hear the hard disks power down and then up again and shortly after that, the screen fills with a dark screen from top to bottom and a message says that I need to restart the machine by holding down the power button. It never gets past that point. I can boot with no problem to the current installation on hard disk, but can't do a new installation.
I've tried this with all peripherals detached. I've even tried taking out all the hard disks just ot see what happens, and I get the same problem. I've verified/repaired the hard disks and also run a repair on the security rights. No success.
I have also tried the original Tiger install disk that came with the machine and that does the same thing, so I'm beginning to assume that this is some sort of hardware issue. I've checked the console logs, and the last thing that seems to be there is a message saying:
14/04/2009 09:55:41 [0x0-0x1e01e].com.apple.systempreferences[230] Could not interpret boot device as either network or disk
The hardware diagnostics tests report no problems.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks

  • IMac Won't Allow Me To Install Applications Or Even Open Folders

I have an iMac Intel Core Duo 2.33 GHz, with 2GB of Ram running 10.5.4.
When I booted my Mac last week I noticed a brown area on my screen. After the machine booted I could only open the applications that were in my dock or do a search for them through Spotlight and start the application from there, since it took many clicks to get to my Applications directory to open after clicking GO in the menu bar.
Even after the Applications directory opened (which took forever) I was unable to click on ANY of the applications and scrolling was extremely slow or not at all. I also had to Refresh the Finder just to get it to show up at the top of my screen or close the Application window.
I took the machine in for repair and they replaced the screen and told me that not being able to open folders, go to the Application folder or ANY folder was a software issue and not a hardware issue. They recommended I remove EVERYTHING in my Startup Login Options when I got home and that would fix the problem, it did not - I removed all 4 applications in the startup and nothing changed.
I rarely install applications, but I faithfully repair permissions at least daily and I have installed all of the latest updates Apple released in the last 2 weeks.
Thing I have done so far
    1. Repaired Permissions
    2. Verified The Disk
    3. Reinstalled Leopard And All The Updates
    4. Run Most of the options built into Onyx, Maintenance and Mac Pilot, since I have them already installed.
Nothing has made a difference, I am still unable to run anything in my applications directory, open ANY folder on my desktop or any other directory, drag an icon to my applications folder or drag a folder or icon on my desktop.
The only things I can do is run what few applications I have in my Dock and search for Applications using Spotlight and run them from there. They come up quickly and run just fine once they come up.
Any help or suggestions someone could provide would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much for your time!
    Randy

Repairing permission daily is a complete waste of time and will not help you. In fact, repairing the disk permissions needs to only be done about 2-3 times a year at best.
You say you verified the disk but did you repair it? Did you get a message that the "disk appears to be o.k."? What kind of install did you do? My guess is you did an archive and install.
Onyx is a troubleshooting tool and should not be used on a regular basis for anything. Caches do not need to be cleaned on a regular basis and everything else Onyx and similar utilities claim to do are handled by the system automatically. Do not use these utilities unless you are having a problem.
My guess is you have a serious problem with file corruption.
Have you tried creating a new account? Try that and see if the problem follows to the new account or not.
