Word 2008, crashing, oh my!

So, sure I have a 1000+ page plus document. But I have put it in draft mode so it doesn't repaginate. That saves time. But, if I apply a Style and then press return on the keyboard, Word crashes.
Has anyone seen problems with Styles and Word 2008?

1. Uninstall Office and reinstall it without the fonts (custom installation) - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=418269
2. Move the Library/Fonts/Microsoft to the trash - http://www.everythingicafe.com/forum/mac-and-iphone/microsoft-office-2008-messed -up-all-my-fonts-22275.html

Word 2008 crashes when trying to save as PDF

Ever since upgrading to 10.6, I've been unable to save Word 2008 documents as pdf files from the print dialog. As soon as select "Save as PDF" from the PDF pull down, Word crashes. This doesn't happen in Excel or Powerpoint.
What's interesting is that if I select the Preview button (next to the PDF pull down in the print dialog), it opens the file using either Acrobat or Preview (depending on how I set things up), both of which let me save the file as a PDF.

I also have had a few instances where Save as PDF crashed Safari and Firefox. It doesn't happen on the first attempt, after trying to save a few documents in Safari it consistently crashed while using the Save as PDF, I thought it was a Safari problem so I switched to Firefox it allowed me to save a few a more documents and then it crashed.

Word 2008 crashes when I have several documents open

I'm running word 2008, and whenever I have multiple documents open (some large) word seems to crash randomly after a while. I can open a bunch of documents, work with them, then leave the computer. When I come back and click on a document window, it'll crash usually. I checked system logs and it shows this:

I tried deleting the plist files associated with word and office to no avail. Anyone know what it could be?

One solution to your present issue is to consider NeoOffice or OpenOffice, either of which are nearly 100% MS compatible and do not suffer from these Word/Office-related issues that many MS Office/Mac users seem to have.
Neo and Open Office are fully Leopard compatible and I have never had any issues with them. I use them on PCs and Macs. They are free downloads.

Word 2008 crashes when pfd files are inserted

I wonder if anyone at Apple are looking into the issue that seem to be confirmed by many reports in different forums: That Word 2008 do crash if a pdf document is inserted into a document saved in the .doc format - not the never .docx format.
Some has advised to save the document in the .docx and then with one or more other applications open and save the document in other formats and eventually ending up in the .doc format with a working document.
No fix has be reported to be launched soon from Microsoft. So what does Apple say?
Although this might be a rather long shot I was wondering if the pdf issue in Word 2008 might have anything to do with the way Mac OS treats the pdf files? The Security Update 2008-005 from Apple dealt with pdf files - and might have changed the performance of other applications - or what?

"CoreGraphics--CVE-2008-2322--An integer overflow in the handling of PDF files may result in a heap buffer overflow. Viewing a maliciously crafted PDF file may lead to an unexpected application termination or arbitrary code execution. This update addresses the issue through additional validation of PDF files. I understand your point, but please read the info on the security update that was inserted into my message - there seem to be something with pdf documents and security - and one might speculate if
this might also affect applications ??

Word 2008 crashing frequently on my upgraded 400 Mhz Pismo

I've just started to use Word 2008 on my upgraded 400 MHz Pismo while I recuperate from an operation and can't use my iMac and it is crashing frequently - is my 400MHz Pismo out of spec for Office 2008 apps? Is there anything else I can do to run Office 2008 apps? Cheers, Steve

Hi, Steven. Your Pismo doesn't meet the minimum requirements for Office 2008, which requires at least a G4 processor.

Word 2008 crashes in Snow Leopard - HP printer to blame?

I've been struggling with Word 2008 under Snow Leopard for almost two months, with lots of crashes. I've tried all kinds of things, including setting up a new user account, validating fonts, full reinstalls of SL and MS Office, cleaning caches with OnyX, etc. So far nothing works.
Most often the crashes come when I open an older Word document that was printed, at least once, on an old HP LaserJet 3300 printer that I no longer own. I think that whenever a document is printed, this information is saved in the document file somewhere. Now when I try to open these documents in SL, Word chokes on them.
I don't know if there are any solutions to this, but thought I would post in hopes that someone has run into a similar problem.

Updating SL to 10.6.2, and updating Office 2008 to 12.2.3, seems to have completely fixed the problem!

Word 2008 crashes in original user account, but ok in new user account

I sat through 1.5 hours with a Microsoft tech uninstalling and reinstalling office 2008 just to find that when they had me create a new user, Word didn't crash like it was in my original user account. That is when they said, this is not a Word problem, it's a mac problem...
I had read that fonts may cause issues, so I used font book to resolve duplicate font problems and verify all of my fonts (including the new ones that Office installs) I also disabled all of my user fonts and only ran the system set...Word still crashed.
I'm wondering if anyone out there has seen this problem and would have any clue as to what I have in my user account that might conflict...what are key differences between an old user account and a fresh one?

Mainly Pref files, (.plist), secondly Permissions, thirdly Login Items in the Accounts pref pane, to test if it's a login item, Safe Boot into that account, (holding Shift key down at bootup), test, then use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.

Hi,
I found that my word 2008 always crashes when I change any setting that need to be saved when quitting. For example, the most common one is that I always want to print two-sided to save paper. Whenever I changed the print setting, it will crash when I quit the word (after all documents have been successful saved and closed). It seems that I don't have certain privilege to save the changes, but I am already the administrator. Anyone has similar problems? How do I solve it?

Hi,
I believe this may be related to recently downloading Yosemite:
Every time I try to use Microsoft Word (2008) with "track changes" on, Word shuts off abruptly.
Has any one else had this problem? Is there a way to fix it?
I've already tried Disk Utility - disk & disk permissions repair.
Help would be greatly appreciated.

Word 2008 Crashing (copy and paste)

Absolutely sick of this crap. I need, 100% need Word because everything is done in this program for my University classes. Anyway, consistent crashing when copy & pasting. Read a bit on the net, it appears to be a common problem.

I have SP1 installed, gonna uninstall Office 2008 and reinstall without updating to SP1. I read it can cause issues? Makes no sense, but ok..
Why can't we just have a flawless program, I mean I bought this thing for school and I'm losing all my data after a crash.. no autorecovery after crash or battery-dead shutdown???

I never use the hyperlinks panel. Instead I find that creating no fill/no stroke buttons gives me a better (more stable) results.

Office Word 2008 crashes when trying to open a local stored document ONLY if network connection is down

Sorry to bother you all but I have a situation I can't find a solution for:
on a MBP 2009, running Mac OS X 10.6.8 and MS Office 2008 (up to date), if I open a local stored document AND the unit is connected to the network everything works fine.
As soon as I switch off the network connection and I open a local stored document Word freezes and within "Force quit..." I can see that Word is no longer responding. A few minutes later OS X quits Word and that's it.
I already checked Safe boot, removing the Microsoft plist's and reinstalling MS Office 2008 including all available updates but the situation is still the same.
Any ideas?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

MS Word 2008 Crashes under Snow Leopard

After installing Snow, I find I cannot open Word files without the app crashing. I've removed and re-installed Word, using the recommended procedures of re-booting between each step, upgrading to the latest 12.1.0 version, repaired disk verifications, permissions and yet this app still crashes every time. I can't use Word now, so what to try next? Are we ever going to get some help from Apple?

I had similar problems with the entire Office suite as well as every other application on my machine, including system preferences and utilities.
All of my apps crashed the first time launched, then they would run for awhile, but never for long. My entire Adobe CS4 suite of apps crashed so often I got tired of submitting crash reports. Even Apple's own Safari was crashing every time I tried to save an image to my hard drive.
I ran into an issue with Photoshop yesterday where it would no longer display any previews in the Layers panel and finally it wouldn't even open a PSD file I had been working on.
I have 11GB/ram on my machine and still had no free memory to run apps.
After having problems similar to yours with every application on my machine and finally getting so bad I couldn't get any work done, I ripped my start up drive out and replaced it with a backed up version of the previous Leopard <10.5.8>. Problem solved.
Snow Leopard <10.6> was not ready for release. I suggest reverting back to your previous OS as 10.6 will only continue causing problems. It needs a complete overhaul.

Microsoft Word 2008 immediately crashes after opening

Hoping to work on a paper for school after updating to OS X Mavericks, but as the title of this post indicates, Word 2008 crashes immediately after opening.
I'm working off of a 2010 Macbook Pro, though not sure if that makes a difference.

Try going to Font Book and validating your fonts. If that doesn't fix the problem are you getting any crash reports you can post?
If you aren't getting any crash logs - The next time the problem happens, note the date and time the problem occurred, then go to Applications/Utilities/Console and copy the log starting at the time of the crash. Paste the log in a reply. Please do not use a screen shot as they can be hard to read. If there are repeated runs of the same messages, please post only one run. Be selective about what you post and don’t post huge amounts. Make sure there is no personal data visible. Information learned from Linc Davis.
