Write permission error when Save for Web & Devices

I'm using PS5.1.  When I try to Save for Web & Devices I'm getting write permission errors.  I haven't used this application for over a year, but it used to work fine. I'm not sure what changed.
I also used the Mac Disk Utility to Repair Permisions, but that didn't help.
Please help.
Thanks!

The problem could be related to Mavericks permission problems. You can try the Bridge fix:
Open Finder > (go) Computer > Macintosh HD (for me) > Users > Click once on the Home icon (main admin) > Get Info >
click on lock and authorise bottom right > click on cog wheel drop down > click on 'Apply to enclosed items' > OK

  • Error - When saving for web & devices

HELP, when I go to save a file for Web & Devices I am getting an error message It just started happening and it happens every time. Here is the message:
"Image exceeds the size Save for Web was designed for. You may experience out of memory errors and slow performance. Are you sure you want to continue?"
It doesn't matter how big/small the file size is. If I drag the file into Photoshop and try from there it works perfectly.
I am running leopard on a 17" MacBook Pro
    2.33 ghz Intel Core Duo
    160 gb hard drive
    2 gb ram
    60 gb free space
    Any ideas???
    Thanks, I am desperate.

    Hi Suki,
I have described the "problem" in detail on my blog today, and prescribed a solution as well. Let me know if this solves your problem!

  • CS5 Photoshop - Adobe Save for Web & Devices Error

    Hi folks,
I know similar threads exists, but this one is different. For some reason, out of the blue, I can't use 'Save for Web' anymore. When I choose 'save for web', it opens the preview dialog nicely, up until I save & get this error:
"Adobe Save for Web & Devices Error
Could not complete this operation. An unknown operating system error has occurred."
Cleared all my settings, and the error remains.
I uninstalled PS CS5, installed it again... still get this error.
Hope someone knows how to fix it!
    Tx!
MacBookPro3,1, running all the latest updates (OSX 10.6.4), CS5 Master Collection.
Luckily still have CS4 Master Collection installed (and Flash CS3).
(I've just got to get this off my chest, CS5 has so much issues that I stopped using it, I'm not getting paid for playing crashtestdummie. Please don't rush any future CS collections and try fixing bugs instead. )

    Hi Wade,
Tx, but 99% of my time, I work on my local system (scratch disk also). Already had problems working with the company's network (files get locked or corrupted while trying to save), so we've learned the hard way not to use the network.
I guess that's somewhat expected if you work with a Mac, in a professional Windows environment.
Meanwhile, I'm a step closer in finding a solution myself. A colleague gave me a great tip, if you create an extra user account on the system, you start with a clean library. On my second account, PS CS5 is working just fine. So clearly, something went wrong in my library. Maybe permissions like you've said. At this point, I could try to fix it by copying files from the one user to the other. But I would like to wait for that connect session so they can see what's wrong.

  • IBooks author color shift with "Save for web devices..."

Hi! I'm a web developer and I'm learning to use iBooks. It's a really easy tool, but there is a problem with color management wich is driving me crazy. This happen when I export images from "Save for web devices..." from Photoshop, then drag it to iBooks author.
As I do for web development, I do this:
    1) Configure photoshop Color Settings to work with "Color Monitor"
    2) Remove any color management from my document
    3) Proof Setup > Monitor RGB
    4) Disable Proof Colors
    5) Use "Save for web devices..." with ICC profile and sRGB unchecked
The exported JPG looks fine everywhere... Photoshop, Preview, Safari, Chrome, FF... but looks washed out when I drag it to iBooks Author. Why?
I solved this issue converting to sRGBIEC61966-2.1 profile and checking ICC profile when  "Save for web devices...", but I'm not confortable with this workaround because I'm not sure about what I'm doing exactly, and I am not sure if this images are gonna look good on any device (I only own an iPad 3).
Somebody know a best method to deal with this?
    Thanks!

Hi KT. Thanks for your response. I'm already using this formats. Anyway, the problem occurs within iBooks Author interface. I mean: I can see the color shift (or washed out...) at iBooks Author at my computer screen. Of course, when I test it on iPad it also looks bad.
It's incredibly strange because the JPGs I'm using looks fine everywhere else except iBooks Author.

  • Another save for web devices error - File already exists?

I've been using the same Photoshop CS4 on Windows 7 for about a year now, and only now this problem occurs to me.
Whenever I try to preview gifs in any browser (tried a few), I get the error message "Could not complete this operation. A file by this name already exists."
Tried renaming the files, replacing them, creating new ones, tried to enter preview on old files that previously worked, but always get the same error message.
I did some research and tried deleting both the main Save for Web and Devices pref file, and the other so called "hidden one" in the plugins folder. I've tried reinstalling photoshop from scratch. Nothing works.
Please help me. I'm near desperate :/

Ah, sorry, now I see what you're doing.
I haven't had the issue myself, but I can guess that one or more of the temporary files it needs to create in order to show them in your browser must be failing in creation.  Check the permissions on the folder identified by your TEMP environment variable - you should have Full Control of your TEMP area..
Specifically, it creates a "Save for Web" subfolder there.  You might be able to delete that entirely in order to start afresh.
Just to test, I've opened Photoshop CS4, entered Save for Web & Devices, and pressed the Preview button myself and it worked okay here...  Your TEMP area is likely different than mine.

  • Color shift (lightening) when using "Save for Web & Devices..."

Can someone please let me know why I'm getting a color shift (the entire image lightens noticably) when I export an image or animated gif with "Save for Web & Devices...". It happens on PCs and Macs, and with both CS3 and CS2.
I've been using this feature (flawlessly until a few months ago) long enough to realize that there are several settings to adjust the color table, dithering, web snap, etc., but adjusting these settings don't seem to fix the problem. When I use "Save As..." the color shift doesn't occur, and that's been my workaround, but I'm currently trying to save a few animated gifs, which must be saved with "Save for Web & Devices..." in order to retain the animation.
    Please help!! Many thanks.

Ah ha! I thought so. The only reason I can speak on this topic at all is because of what I was forced to learn when I started using a Dell LCD flatscreen.
As mentioned earlier, most monitors are pretty close to sRGB, which made web work somewhat easier. However, it seems recently some so-called "wide gamut" monitors have come to market, including the recent crop of Dells. The new Dells can produce a gamut that is closer to Adobe RGB than sRGB. This means -- speaking loosely -- it can produce brighter and more saturated colours than an "sRGB" type monitor.
RGB numbers, in the context of a defined colour space, represent an "actual" real life colour. A very bright red in sRGB colour space may be represented by r255b0g0, but that same "actual" red colour is represented in the wider Adobe RGB colour space by r219b0g0. Adobe RGB, being wider than sRGB, can include still brighter reds than sRGB's brightest red, hence where sRGB hits a roof at r255, Adobe RGB can keep going higher.
Imagine two ladders, each with ten steps on it. The Adobe RGB ladder is taller than the sRGB ladder, even though they both have ten steps. The 9th step is higher (i.e. brighter) on the Adobe RGB ladder than on the sRGB ladder. So if an image contains the RGB values of r219b0g0, well if you assign it to sRGB, it will not be a very bright red. If you assign it to Adobe RGB, it will be a brighter red, because that "ladder step" (like the 9th step) is higher than the same step in sRGB.
This is why your image appears brighter when viewed in SFW and in web browsers. Photoshop knows it's supposed to be using sRGB colour space, but SFW and web browsers DOESN'T, and so it just assigns your monitor colour space, which with these Dell monitors is wider than sRGB.
I think the Dell monitor is fine...I still highly recommend purchasing some type of hardware calibration utitily (one that has a thingy that attaches to the screen to measure the light being emitted). Properly calibrate and profile your monitor, trust what you see in Photoshop, convert to sRGB for web images, and forget the rest. Either way, your images will look "good" on some people's monitors and "bad" on others.

  • "Save for Web & Devices" Huge BUG and major annoyance!

    Photoshop CS3
I am so tired of losing all of my work for this bug it isn't even funny! It doesn't lock up Photoshop but does make it impossible to save anything including all the currently cropped and resized images open in PS. It forces you to lose hours of work in some cases which is what just now happened and I want something done with this since it is probably the biggest annoyance from a BUG of all the adobe products ever.
    To replicate this bug:
    Open an image, any image.
Go to File and Choose "Save for Web & Devices".
Once the "Save for Web & Devices" dialog box is open choose save, BUT here is the bug, after the Save As dialog box appears choose cancel to go back to the open and now useless "Save for Web & Devices".
Attempt to now close the "Save for Web & Devices" dialog box.
The issue is it won't close once I cancel after choosing save from the  "Save for Web & Devices" dialog. I cannot resize the window or do  anything in PS when this happens since it takes complete focus. I cannot  close the box or choose from most of the options on the right since now  at this point they'll all be blank.
This has happened before and  I had learned to save no matter what to avoid this but just forgot and  am once again about to lose HOURS of work because of it...
I have searched and searched and cannot find a separate process to close in device manager to stop just it (which is lame). All I can do is close PS and say good bye to everything I had already done.
Of course I would like a solution to this and a fix but having owned Adobe products for years know this is highly unlikely and to get a fix you must buy the new version (pathetic). So, I will settle for yet another hopeful work around to get around this idiotic BUG.
EDIT: I have rebuilt my preferences countless times (since that seems to be needed for so many of Adobe's products issues) as well as complete resinstalls of the CS3 Production Premium Suite to no avail. I have dealt with this issue for several years and several new installs. I have an aviation forum and people have been able to replicate this on theirs installs as well, to include one CS4 user.

    Thanks Noel, and others.
I have listened to people.  In fact read my second post. It was seeing the 1st two that couldn't  duplicate the error get on the phone to a friend in Germany that was  able to duplicate it. I then came back here and shared what my  suspicions were of the Matrox unit. The other person able to duplicate the issue has yet to return to the forum for me to further check with (I guess some people sleep).
To be clear here. I  have owned CS3 since it's release. I have built myself several  computers since I bought it and this one is actually the third since  then. This particular issue though was never seen until a few months ago  since I seldomly use the Save for Web for saving files and just started  using it on my latest flash site.
As for video cards.  This card I am using is my 3rd. My GTX 260 was great but being having  other joys of the PC I also always kept up with the latest and greatest  cards so thus came my last purchase of the GTX295 before the newer ones  hit. Point being, the issue is most likely my Trip2GO and plan on  testing when I get home and get it ripped apart. I do web design on the  side which is one reason the trip2Go for my home workstation. The other point is that I do a LOT more than Adobe work and my card needs to be high end and not some cheap card just to make my suite work. Maybe in the future I'll make another comp,,, one for every other product I own and then one just for Adobe's products.
Now as for tech support and myself. I am A+ certified. I am certified in every OS since Dos 6 and a hardware engineer. I do tech support, have 3 support forums and 11 web site, all primarily based on support. My comments above were not about getting mean, it is because Adobe support in general is one of the worst that I have ever had the misfortune to deal with and strongly disagree with the way they cut support and updates to a year old product (that's when no more patches came out I meant and known bugs were written off for the next version). To say try a new video card to me is like a supposed "tech" to say reinstall your OS, or like here reading people say (what I originally said I did) about clearing the preferences. Sure, this help clear up lots of Adobe product abnormalities but listen up folks, it's not a SOLUTION, it is merely a work around. It shouldn't get so screwed up to begin with. This is not my product and although I have tried it, it is wrong to not fix these issues and just expect people to keep refreshing there preferences. It takes me hours and days to get things back the way I want them and normally half way to heaven another bug and I have to reset them yet again! This is us dealing with a broken product, period. It is far from a solution, there's a huge difference.
Moving along,,, This build is a few months old but my windows install is much more recent. All firmware, drivers you name it is up to speed 100% I guaruntee. My hardware is all working perfectly with the propable exception of the Matrox rig. It has to be it. Being that the 1st two people to reply in my own forum were able to immediately duplicate the error had me thinking other but as you should be able to see is that changed fast and if you read this thread from top to bottom you'll see that I have been providing all the answers people are asking.
Thanks again, I'll report back tonight. My current plan is to go through the painful process of getting just one monitor working without the Matrox unit, flushing my preferences and trying again. I think it will work fine but will report back either way.

  • Save for Web & Devices, The operation could not be completed

I keep getting this error when I Save for Web & Devices: The operation could not be completed.
I have saved for the web before for many more complex, larger images without a hitch.
I am using a psd format with an image that I designed. It is no more complex than others I have done. It is small, just a horizontal navbar about the size of the one on Apple's website.
I tried exporting it, flattening it, slicing it removing the slices.
I think it is a problem with the application itself.
I have tried repairing my permissions, restarting, and holding Cmd, Opt, Control, Shift during PS startup to reset the settings. Any insight would be appreciated.

When trying to Save for web & Devices I get this error:
Could not complete this operation. An unknown error has occurred.
If I click on the Device Central button I get this message:

EXIF is a file format used by digital cameras to store metadata associated with an image.
This metadata can be any of several things:
    date/time
    f-stop
    shutter speed
    camera make/model
    lens make/model
    GPS location
Some photo libraries (such as Flikr) will display the EXIF data alongside the photo.

  • Save for Web & Devices is changing resolution from 72ppi to 300ppi

    Hi,
I'm writing an action to do the following.
Image size - change resolution from 300ppi to 72ppi
    Automate - Fit Image - 600px x 600px
Save for web and devices - JPEG medium.
If I save at any stage (up to save for web & devices) the image is 72ppi
However when I open it again after saving for web & devices and check image size it's 300ppi HOW?
Am I missing something really stupid?
    Peter

    Hi Charles,
Sometimes we have to go through meaningless steps...
The spec for the job is to "automate" a process whereby we end up with a web suitable 600px JPEG of about 50k with © watermark.
Of course they are expecting a 72ppi image, so its easier if thats what they get!!!
The other requirement involves the fact that the web end of the business want to change the filename, so in order to keep a link, I write the filename to IPTC Title Field (using Peter Krogh's script)
However I've now found that if I "save for web & devices" with copyright & contact info, I get IPTC title and 72ppi,
    So happy days....
Many thanks, but now just more curious to know exactly whats happening!

  • Quick Trim option in Save for Web & Devices

    Hi,
a feature to do a quick Trim in Save for Web & Devices dialogue would be great, especially if it was enabled with a checkbox, then when you enable it, it activates a dialogue with the three options that already exist in Trim option (Transparent pixels, Top left color, Bottom right color).
Let me know what you think.

I need to figure out why my trim option is always grayed out. It's saved in PSD format, yet the option to trim the transparent pixels is grayed out. why is that? what am I doing wrong? I must have to change something.
    Thanks in advance, Linda

  • Save for Web & Devices 2-up view not appearing side by side

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help me with this issue. In Photoshop CS4, when I used to go  to the Save for Web & Devices screen, I liked using the 2-up view so I could see the difference between my original and the optimized versions. However, I've tried doing this in CS4 now and I remember seeing (in CS3 I believe) where the layout of the 2-up view was side by side (vertically) so you could have the original on the left and the optimized on the right. Now, in CS4, at least on my machine (mac OSX tiger), the 2-up view only displays the original and optimized horizontally (with the original on top and the optimized below). Is this a fixed layout for the 2-up view or can this be changed? Is this normal is something corrupted? I've looked everywhere for a button or setting to click (that I could think of) and have not been able to find a place where the layout setting can be changed. I know it's a very small issue for most people, but I really preferred viewing the two versions side by side vertically instead of one on top of the other. I'm assuming that this is just a setting somewhere that the user could change but I don't know - perhaps this interface update is new to CS4 and is not customizable?
Anyone have any information or solutions to this?

Thanks so much...that was so easy, but I don't think I would ever have found it!
It works now, I just resized the window and it's now side by side...funny how this was not described in the help file when I looked it up!
    Thanks again.

  • Save for web & devices not working (CS4)

I noticed today that I can't save for web & devices any more. when I try it shuts down the program and gives me the following message to send a crash report:
Adobe has detected that the application Adobe Illustrator CS4 has unexpectedly quit.
this started as a Photoshop CS4 problem where I also can't save for web & devices any more. before people jump down my throat again for mentioning this Photoshop problem on the Illustrator forum - this is for context only. I have the same problem in both applications. I just include this information here in case it helps. the Photoshop message I get is:
The operation can not be completed.
savign for web & devices worked totally fine up till last night in Photoshop. haven't saved anything out of Illustrator for web & devices in a while but it used to work just fine.
I have a PC and use Windows 7. All my Adobe products are up-to-date.
Any help is much appreciated. Thx a lot!

thank you very much. at least it happened before. I was seriously doubting myself. tried trashing preference files multiple times, but that didn't help. will reinstall everything and see if that does the trick.
    thanks again!

  • Save for Web & Devices window doesn't fit @ 1366 x 768

I'm using a MacBook Air running at 1366 x 768, or within Adobe CS5 requirement tolerances, but whenever I try to 'Save for Web & Devices', the dialogue box that pops up is much too big, vertically speaking, for my screen. Attempting to minimize/maximize doesn't rectify the problem--a substantial portion of the window, including the buttons necessary to execute the save action, are in the not-visible portion of the window. If I hit ENTER/RETURN, I can complete the process, but this is clearly a bug: I should be able to resize the window, or scroll within it.
Is there something else I can do, short of pursue a fix from Adobe? Some setting I've overlooked? I'm running Lion, but this problem started on a Snow Leopard install.

Wrong!  Yes, you do have to hide the Dock if you want to share the Adobe Photoshop minimum required space with Apple's Dock, which in my opinion should be invisible when not needed, which in turn is for a split second every half hour or more.  I'm sick and tired of Apple shoving ugly, intrusive OS features down our throats (see footnote * in next paragraph).  I want the computer to do what I want, not what Apple wants.
