Writing to DV tape

Once I've plugged my camera in how do I write to DV tape?
i. What setting do I put my camera on?
ii. What settings do I used in export?
Cheers
Ben

Once I've plugged my camera in how do I write to DV tape?
Two ways. FILE>PRINT TO VIDEO...or just press record on the camera and play on the timeline. Couldn't be easier.
i. What setting do I put my camera on?
Just put it in VTR mode.
ii. What settings do I used in export?
None...just do what I said above.
AND READ THE MANUAL...all this stuff is covered in the manual...

  • Backup to tape failed in DPM 2012

    I am new to DPM.
We have configured a protection group for short term goal with 7 days retention range, Synchronization frequency 6 hours. And recovery points are based on synchronization (means 4 Recovery points per day and DPM will have 28 valid restore points after a
week...!!??). In long term goals we have configured 2 recovery goals to tape ...  1 recovery point per week on saturday (retention 4 weeks) and 1 recovery point per month (on day 1 with retention range of 1 month).
Now Im getting PG status "backup to Tape failed" I want to know the process how DPM will check and verify recovery points on disk before writing them to tape.
Based on my protection group settings, there should be 4 recovery points on disk everyday. but there is something different result...see the below in reply.
    My queries are:
    1) On Saturday weekly tape job, does it require DPM to have valid 28 Recovery points?? What happen if any RP missing.
    2) Due to some issues, if weekely tape backup failed on saturday. Can we resume it on monday,tuesday..with corrective actions??
    3) the DPM process of verifying disk based recovery points before writing them to tape.

    Hi,
    <New questions Snip<
Q1) For file/volume protection, synchronization is not RP. We have to configure RP creation time manually.
A1)  Correct, file synchronizations are not recoverable, only "recovery points" are recoverable.
Q2) For application's (SQL,EXCH,SHAREPOINT) recovery points each synchronization job will create a RP as per synchronization frequency.
A2)  Yes, for applications like SQL and Exchange that support incremental backups, then incremental synchronizations are recoverable.
Q3) If a tape backup is getting failed due to invalid RP on disk, I am creating a manual RP with Express full backup(for databases) and a RP with Incremental(for file/volume share), then resuming tape backup. Is it correct way to do this?
A3) Yes, A manual Express full for application data or a manual recover point with synchronization for file / share data and that should allow you to manually create a new tape based backup from the alert.
Q4)How to enable the verify option to check the integrity of the tape backup?
A4) Simply modify the PG that has tape based protection and while on the "Select Library and tape Details" page, select the option "check backup for data integrity (time consuming operation)".
    Q5) And what is Co-Location..!!
A5) Tape co-location allows data from different protection groups to be written to the same tape.  You need to make a tape protection group set using the "Optimize usage" feature under the management - Libraries page of the DPM console.

  • Integration of RMAN with virtual tape library

OS: Oracle Linux 5.5 UEK (Virtualbox)
    Oracle: 11gR2 11.2.0.1 Enterprise + ASM (Virtualbox)
    Hello,
I would like to test something about RMAN and writing directly to tape. For this I installed mhvtl, a virtual tape library. The installation was pretty easy. http://sites.google.com/site/linuxvtl2/
RMAN does not recognize any tape in the system.
ORA-19554: error allocating device, device type: SBT_TAPE, device name:
ORA-27211: Failed to load Media Management Library
What I found out is that in order to make backups to a media manager, RMAN must communicate with a media management library, which is a 3rd party library that is not supplied by Oracle. So I guess unless there is a Oracle MML library available for mtx I' out of luck here.
    Any ideas? Thanks!
    rpm -ivh mhvtl-0.18-13.x86_64.rpm
    rpm -ivh mhvtl-0.18-13.src.rpm
    cd /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/
    tar zxvf ../SOURCES/mhvtl-2011-01-11.tgz
    cd mhvtl-0.18/kernel
    make
    make install
    /etc/init.d/mhvtl start
    yum install mtx
The tape library and using it for backup from system seems to work fine:
    # mtx status
    Storage Changer /dev/changer:4 Drives, 43 Slots ( 4 Import/Export )
    Data Transfer Element 0:Full (Storage Element 1 Loaded):VolumeTag = E03001L4
    etc.
    # mtx load 1
Drive 0 Full (Storage Element 1 loaded)
    # tar cf /dev/ntape ./
    # tar tvf /dev/ntape

    Thanks for the tip!
I installed Oracle Secure Backup Express and spend all afternoon with this strange product, mainly to troubleshoot the installation and setup. I'm not really sure everything works - it's quite a piece of software, as usual.
I ran into a couple of issues that were not mentioned in the installation documentation:
    - install sg3_utils
    - use obtool to register the server as mediaserver

RMAN was not happy with it:

Document ID 396046.1 solution outlines to correct the hostname or mediaserver name. However, this was not the problem. I finally figured that /etc/obproxyd is a symlink to a .wrapper script which points to the actual proxy application. The fix was:
    #chmod +s /usr/local/oracle/backup/.etc.linux86_64obproxyd
    After this the error changed:

I finally got it running. I deleted the current library and drive configuration and used the webtool to configure the other library at /dev/sg17. it was also necessary to use the webtool to load a volume into the drive. Unfortunately I did not note down the steps in details. Maybe next time.

  • Write back to tape

I have several video files that I captured from a MiniDV camcorder using iMovie. I know have lost the tape and would like to write these files back to a MiniDV tape. Can someone outline step by step what I do to achieve this in FinalCut Express (or iMovie if it would be easier). If possible, I would like to maintain the date after writing back to tape (e.g. so I can watch on the camcorder and the date is proper). All of the files are saved as "[date of recording].dv" inside the "iMovie Events" folder. Any help would be GREAT!!!

Not a big deal regarding the date. I anticipated that it would be lost. How do I go about writing back to tape (e.g. is there a step by step guide somewhere that I haven't been able to find). I keep getting the following error:
Could not find an HDV camera or deck.
Please connect an HDV camera or deck to your Macintosh and put in "play" mode.
I am not trying to write back HDV video, nor is the video that has been captured HDV. (all shot on a cheap Sony DCR-HC28 - in both regular and Widescreen)
    Thanks for the help!

  • Print/Email PDF in iBooks

So, here is what the support page for iOS 4.2 & iBooks says I can do:
    Printing or Emailing a PDF
You can use iBooks to send a copy of a PDF via email, or to print all or a portion of the PDF to a supported printer.
Email a PDF: Open the PDF, then tap and choose Email Document. A new message appears with the PDF attached. When you finish addressing and writing your message, tap Send.
Print a PDF: Open the PDF, then tap and choose Print. Select a printer and the page range and number of copies, then tap Print. For more information, see “Printing” on page 44.
You can only email or print PDFs. These options aren’t available for ePub books.
However, I don't ever see the icon to actually do this. Does this functionally exist or is it just talked about? Is there supposed to be an iBooks update in the App store that I don't see? I'm just really confused, but could really use this functionality.

I've been trying to figure this one out too. Checking out the fine print on AirPrint is what crushed my hopes of using this feature. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4356 Aparently printing only works with an AirPrint supported printer. AirPrint also requires the latest iTunes update. So if you do own one of the printers on the aparenly short list of HP printers try updating your iTunes, otherwise just curse Apple for being fraught with propriety, money grubbing, BS. Then go buy one of the third party apps for printing, something that should be standard issue, especially for a device like the iPad.

  • Taping of SQL data takes unexpectedly long time

DPM 2012 Update Rollup 3 with 2x HP LTO5 drives in a Quantum i500 library, FC connected.
I have attached a screenshot showing the timing of tape backups involving SQL databases.
Notice that irrespective of size, the total time taken is at least 3 or 4 minutes.  I have highlighted three examples where there is a trival amount of data involved (eg 3MB), yet DPM still spends over 4 minutes writing it to tape.
I'm starting to wonder whether DPM has a bug and is rewinding the tape after each database.
The same system backs up exchange databases (admittedly much larger at 500GB+ each) and streams at 80 to 120MB/s so raw performance isn't a problem.
The problem appears most noticeable on SQL databases, since many databases (master, model etc) are very small.
The actual databases all end up on the same two tapes (one tape per drive).
    Any ideas?

apparently this problem has been known for some time, any chance of a fix?

  • Interface o8 on linux to aolserver

I'm trying to set up AOL SErver to maintain pools to an oracle
database with the ACS toolkit but i'm running into problems.
The AOLSERVER log keeps reporting that the connection is null.
I think the problem lies in the ODBC datasource option of the
AOLSERVER configuration. I have no idea what to put in this
field. Thank you for your suggestions. If you could cc a reply

I am sure you don't want to hear this, but as a unix hack and
database administrator, I put together a script which uses "dd"
to hot backup the database nightly to tape. It works pretty
well. If anything fails, it sends me e-mail. Not quite the
graphical solution that Legatto might offer, but the price and
piece of mind is right. The only issues I've had with the

  • Editing Modes

    Hi,
Anybody know what are the internal differences between project "editing modes" such as "Desktop" and "HDV 1080P30". Obviously one could create a "Desktop" project with all the same settings as "HDV 1080P30". But in our tests of CS3, there seem to be some significant differences in performance. We were wondering if different editing modes correspond to different internal rendering engines or some such.
    Regards,
    Veronica

Adobe has most likely optimized the programming for certain modes. For example, the DV AVI mode prevents a problem with writing back to tape as does the HDV mode, but more important, I believe that the program recognizes what it does, and does not have to render in order to achieve a real-time playback.

  • DLT not readable by replicator

Hi All, I have a dual-layer project, authored in DVDSP3, that we have submitted to our replicator three different times. They say they can't mount or read our tapes.
I receive no error messages when writing the DLT tapes from DVDSP and I can mount the image from DLT on our system after they are written, so I know the image is there. We have tried a couple different formats, CMF and DDP2.0.
Any ideas of why we can read the data but they can't?
    Thanks in advance.

I will go through and double-check some of these things. I have successfully sent DLTs to this vendor in the past, starting with DVDSP 1.5. Because I'm writing from DVDSP I have assumed compression isn't an issue, but I'll check. I have also used the approved file formats from the replicator, DDP or CMF. I will probably run new tapes in every flavor to take to them for a test.
This batch of DLTs are type-IV tapes. I will see if I can get hold of some type-III as well. I'll have to see how I can slow down the drive.
Again, the oddest thing is the tapes are good. I can mount the volume from both layers and everything works perfectly. There is not a problem with the data, at least when it is read back on one of our systems. So it is an incompatibility issue, not a real writing issue.
I have a date with the tech guys next week. I hope to take them several samples trying these suggestions. I was hoping for a known bug or something! Guess I have more work to do...
Thanks for the help. If anything else comes to mind, I'd love to hear it.

  • Hot back via OS or RMAN

    Hi:
We are in the process of migrating from a 7.3.4 Oracle database to a 10g version.
On the legacy system we are using Sysback/6000 for a hot backup to tape calling before the backup of the tablespace alter tablespace [tablespace_name] begin backup and than writing this to tape followed with the end backup statement.
This has worked quite well (had to recover once and it worked!)
While implementing this same scenario on the new hardware including tape drive the backup performance is quite slow (approx. 6.5 Mb/s).
I have never used RMAN, is it difficult to set up, is it any faster? And if so, are the some documents on the net for setting this up?
    Thanks....Albert

RMAN is definitely going to be more robust than the user managed process of doing a hot-backup. To help understand the concept & configuration of RMAN, you should read over Backup and Recovery Basics and Backup and Recovery Advanced User's Guide.
I'm not familiar with Sysback, so I don't know if RMAN is compatible with that product. However, if RMAN isn't compatible, you can consider Oracle Secure Backup which will provide a FREE alternative to Sysback as long as you are using it to protect one server and one attached tape drive.

  • FCP Titles need rendering...really?

Hey folks, we are running FCP 6 on Mac Pro towers, 8GB memory, quad core etc. we are working with XDCAM sequence with XDCAM footage and some Pro Res footage. We're adding subtitles to sequence as dialog is in foreign language and these FCP titles all need rendering. Any ideas how we can switch settings so they don't need rendering? In the past with older versions of FCP titles have never needed rendering...
any advise greatly appreciated. If more info needed, let me know what.
    cheers, J

Just so you know that no matter what, eventually you'll need to render.
All that ANY system of RT means (whether it be Avid/FCP/Premier/Vegas/etc...) is that the processor can play it back in real time without rendering for that system.
If you ever plan on showing it outside of FCP (or Avid or whatever), you need to export it to a file or write it to tape. All of your effects will then need to be rendered. The disadvantage is that the processing you'd been deferring needs to be performed (thus can significantly slow the proceedure) and then your renders will be thrown away after the process. Whereas if you'd been rendering in clip level increments all along, the export/write to tape will be just a copying of clips/renders into a new file or writing out to tape.
Sometimes it's good to just use RT, then render everything when you take a break for lunch or at the end of the day.
Just so you understand what's going on here...

Reply from nagulan is correct. Our turned out to be an error with TSM. The disk pool had filled up and it was writing this to tape before allowing the backup to continue. The backup didn't handle the "pause" event well and failed out. We only get this with V9 RMAN, not V10 or V11 RMAN backups. This has to be addressed by the backup vendor for V9 as the Oracle RMAN software doesn't seem to handle it well. Maybe configuring a really large timeout for responses MAY fix this, depending on what the code returned from the backup software vendor is and why RMAN isn't happy with it.
In the end it is an issue between V9 RMAN and the backup software we run TSM. Maybe version incompatibility or maybe just V9 is not that robust.

  • DPM couldn't find valid recovery points for VM listed as having numerous recovery points when writing to tape

I'm seeing the following events when DPM tries writing to tape:
    Log Name:      DPM Alerts
    Source:        DPM-EM
    Date:          15/02/2014 12:01:07
    Event ID:      3311
    Task Category: None
    Level:         Error
    Keywords:      Classic
    User:          N/A
    Computer:      <backup server FQDN>
    Description:
The back up to tape job failed for the following reason: (ID: 3311)
Backup of Non VSS Datasource Writer on <PROD server FQDN> cannot be completed. DPM could not find a valid recovery point on disk. (ID: 30126)
All VMs on each of the affected servers have recovery points but
When performing disk to disk to tape backups (d2D2T), tape backups will fail if a new disk based backup is not created before the next scheduled tape backup.  DPM always makes tape backups by mounting last successful disk based recovery point.
This is so we don't need to transfer data over the network since that most recent data is already on the DPM server. Look to see why the disk recovery points are failing and correct that to prevent tape backups from failing.

Is this the only time that recovery points are verified? Can I do a manual verification of recovery points? I'm concerned that some of the backups I have may be corrupt. If that's the case I need a way of finding out which ones are affected and a way to
resolve the issue. Unfortunately I've not found much, the DPM error code isn't even listed in the official documentation. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh859159.aspx Other threads where people have seen this issue seem to be for older versions
of DPM (I'm using the latest 2012 R2 fully updated).
