WRT160N Help !

Hey forum, I have a couple of questions regarding how to secure my wireless connection from others around me.
This  is what my network is looking like, but I think my wireless connection isn't correct with that image. I have my wireless router connected through my hardwired router. Is there a reason it isn't showing up at all on this image? I'm assuming the "Unknown" device is it since it is the only one unaccounted for:

I want to change my privacy settings on my wireless that no one else can access it, of course. When I go to Task/Tools then Change Wireless Security, it goes through the process of Retrieving Router Settings of Scanning The Network, but after that, I get this error message, I have no idea what this means or how to fix it so I can protect my network:

I have a laptop with a wireless connection. The wireless internet worked for maybe 10 minutes while I was typing this message out, but when I went to look at it, it had stopped working. I also have an Apple iTouch with wireless that is working without a problem. I figure I still have to add the laptop to the network. So I go through the steps in the EasyLink Advisor and when I try to add the laptop with the wireless connection, I don't have the ability to add one. This is what the screen is showing me:
My cable modem is a SBV5120
My hardwired router is a LinkSys BEFSR41 [Ver. 2]
My wireless router is a LinkSys WRT160N [Ver. 2]
I can gladly take more screenshots and post as much more info to help clarify my situation. Thanks!

  • WRT160N - Help Needed

Earlier tonight I was trying to find out my IP address on my computer.
I typed in ipconfig in the Run command window cause I thought that's what I had to do.
Turns out it wasn't and now my wifi is messed up.
I have wifi avaiable on my iPod Touch, but not the laptop that was originally connected on the network.
Edit: Nevermind, I figured it out. I had to unplug my wireless modem, wait 30 seconds and replug it in. Worked perfectly!

  • WRT160N Version 3; SERIOUS HELP NEEDED FOR SETUP PLZ??!?!?!

I bought this router probably around 3 weeks ago.
The following is a list of chronological scenarios that i have tried in order to install it and everything during the first week that i got it:
    1. I followed the CD's instructions, got LELA, but then when i used LELA to 'add another computer' it just gave an error, and then after this i could not be screwed using LELA anymore and so i uninstalled it, and then went online to 192.168.1.1 to configure the settings of the router, SSID, password and security which i put was WPA2 etc.
BUT THIS DID not work at all, i have 2 laptops, 1 of them which is new, and the other which was a couple of years old, they could not detect anything.
    2. I then did some internet research, and read on these forums that i needed to change some of its advanced wireless settings, i did that. And then I could actually connect......and was extremely happy at this moment, BUT the next day i noticed, that even though i was about a metre away from the router, my speed was varying BADLY, initially when i first connect with my new laptop which has a Intel Wifi 5100AGN adapter it has a speed of 144mbps, but when i open internet explorer, i see the speed going slower and slower, until it is 1mbps, and sometimes the wireless just cuts out. This happened to my other laptop as well.
    3. I then called for technical assistance, spent so much time talking trying to solve, and downloaded the latest firmware, reflashed the router, but still it has this problem of slowing speeds which is really frustrating.
And doing some more talking and following more instructions from the person on the phone, both my laptops could not connect to the router, even though it can see it at 'Excellent' connectivity.
    4. And so, the person on the phone concluded that i should exchange the router with new one, which i am planning to do, and will probably get it tomorrow. But i am also thinking to myself whether or not to get a different one.
    SOME NOTES:
-When it is wired the internet works fine
-the adapter in the older laptop is a intel 2200BG, so i know that it would probably go at a max speed of 54mbps
-when i said changing advanced wireless settings, i meant changing frequency/RTS/beacon levels etc to the values i have seen on these fourms.
CURRENTLY, since i am exchanging i have gone back to the old ASUS router which is G. and it connects well with the old laptop with a constant speed of 54mbps, but havent tried the new laptop as i can not be bothered. Also my main reason of getting a N router is just for range, because with the current one, i just cannot detect the router when i am in my bedroom, which is less than 20m, even if i can detect it is is very poor connectivity, WHERE AS with the WRT160n before i exchanged it, i could detect at first with Excellent connectivity, but as i said, the problems with speed and wireless cutting out etc is what results from this router.
I guess my main point is that, i want to ask any of you have used the VERSION 3 of WRT160N, and is currently working very well wirelessly. Can u please tell me the step-by-step instructions to help me set this router perfectly?
    regards

Try updating both of your laptops wireless cards that could fix the problem (you know may not be compatible with your WRT160N).
I know you said you changed the channel your router broadcasting in but do you have a lot of other wireless networks in your area???
    GoodLuck

  • WRT160n V3 connection bridge help!

Is there anyway I can set up this router to bridge my connection. I only have 1 ethernet port on my laptop, so i was wondering if i could set up the wifi to bridge it to my xbox, i was hoping to connect to the internet thru the wifi on my laptop, and then pluging my xbox to the laptop by the ethernet port and having the xbox connect to the internet using the wifi of the computer like a bridge connection. im running windows vista 64bit home premium, and a WRT160n V3 router.
Any tips/help will be much appreciated. Thank you

You cannot use your laptop to bridge your xbox to your WRT160N.  You would need an Xbox Wireless Networking adapter such as http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/splash/x/xbox360wirelessnnetadapter/ or a Wireless Bridge such as a WET610N: http://homestore.cisco.com/en-us/adapters/linksys-wrt610n-wirelessn-gaming_stcVVproductId65221232VVc...

  • WRT160N in Bridge HELP

I just bought the WRT160N as my main router. I also have a comstar router that i'm using in bridge mode and everything is working fine. I have the comstar hooked up to a laptop and a PS3 most of the time it work's with no problem. The problem starts when i stream a movie from my main desktop that is hard wired with the WRT160N. Videos start of fine both HD/Non HD (h.264/Divx) but the problem is half way through (about 40 minutes in) the video either freezes or the ps3 gives me a error (different error each time) and i have to wait like 2 minutes and i'm back up and running but have to start the video all over again and after another 40minutes it happens again, I have to restart at least 3 times in order for me to finish watching the video. How can i solve this??
To me it seems like the packates get out of sync or something or either it send to much data and the comstar is not able to handle it. This issue has been happening with a D Link DIR-615 also which i returned for WRT160N. I don't think its the comstar that is causing the issue since a friend has the same comstar router and his works fine. So i think it maybe a settings issue and i don't know of an other router that has bridge support under $50 dollars.
Can anyone recommand any changes that i can try within the advanced wireless settings that may help fix the issue??

What is the IP Address you are getting from the comcast router..and how it is connected to the Linksys router ?
Try reducing the MTU to 1364 on the setup page of the router and then,try..........

  • Problems with WRT160N and Xbox 360 - please help

    Hello,
I have recently purchased a WRT160N router and when I play games online (Halo 3 or Modern Warfare 2) it takes around 10 min to find a game while in the lobby. I don't get kicked out or signed out of my profile it just takes a long time. It says that my NAT type is Open. I have isolated that the problem is the router because if I plug an ethernet cable from the 360 to the DSL modem I find games instantly. I have looked up port forwarding and opened the ports on the 360 and specifically for modern warfare 2 and it actually made my NAT type go to strict, ironic. I have spent 5 hours trying to mess with this and can't seem to get it working right. If someone could please help me on the settings or have any other ideas that would be greatly appreciated.
    Solved!

I have already tried reducing the MTU as well as the Beacon Level, Threshold, and Fragmentation. That did not work. To get the ip address of the modem is where I do cmd prompt ipconfig right. If so, I have not done that yet and since I am at work I will do that when I get home. the ports I have opened on the router for the xbox were 80, 88, 53, and 3074. Like I said when I did that it actually got worse cause my NAT was open but then it went to Strict.

  • Linksys WRT160N Online Downloading issues Please help!!

Ok guys im a newbie to this Networking way of life.
Your help is greatly needed and appreciated here is my problem.
    Equipment= Comcast motorola modem/Linksys WRT160N Wireless router/Linksys WGA600N wireless gaming adapter
The issue here is i do alot of online gaming through my Xbox 360 console i can host a variety of matches online and for hours and hours at a time no lag what so ever but as you know on the Xbox360 dashboard they incorporate a wide range of downloaded content whether it be for your game library or media when I click on content to download no matter the size of the file the speed is terrible it takes about 5-10mins to get from 1% to 3% and just sits there for even a longer period of time as it is at this rate I will have to wait anywhere from 1-2hrs to download a demo or a video or netflix movie. I've contacted tech supp on this and trouble shooted different scenarios I have also port forwarded the ports and I'm still having this issue.
The Wireless router is located 15feet away from the gaming adapter FYI
    Please advise!!!!

This may be a little old, but I have a WGA600N and a WRT610N..  I've had much the same problems but here is what I've discovered that may help.
The WGA600N in the initial setup connected to your computer doesnt have a means of specifying exactly how you want to connect to your wireless (no channel, band, etc).  What ends up happening is that you set your wireless on your router to be "mixed" and the adapter will constantly switch channels.
I went so far as to specify on my 5ghz band on the router that it be "N-Only" and the adapter still gave sluggish performance.
On a whim, after reading some advice I re-setup my adapter and gave it a static IP address outside of the range of my DHCP settings.  This still gave me no better performance.
Then, I decided to try hitting the static IP of the adapter in my browser, and voila!  I can access all the advanced settings of the adapter that you couldn't during the initial setup connected to the computer.  My adapter is using the 1.00 release and I'm able to finally tell the adapter to use "N-Only" as it defaults to "Mixed" mode and will channel surf on you dropping connections.
Having played with both my WGA600N and WRT610N, I can hope for a better firmware release soon but hopefully these tips help you set up your adapter and router a bit better.
    Good luck!

  • Need help with my wrt160N

Hello there!  I just upgraded from a wrt54g to the wrt160N.  Installation was easy but almost immediately I kept losing my connection.  It would refresh itself and then in minutes lose the connection again.  I reset the router and started over and so far today it has been about 80% reliable.  I have 3 laptops and one shared printer on my wireless network using verizon dsl and a westell modem.  What's almost equally as frustrating then losing my connection is that I am prompted about every 5 seconds for my verizon dsl username and password.  This didn't happen with my wrt54g!!!  Can anyone help me remedy these two promblems and possibly help me make some adjustments so I have a more stable network....UGH!  Thanks in advance for your help.

  • WRT160N v2 Wirelessly Cascade [help]

Hi - I just started a Verizon FiOS service - and I would like to wirelessly access the network provided by their Actiontec MI424WR from a computer that I have connected to my WRT160N v2 upstairs.
I've been searching all night, and the only information I have come across has told me that this is possible via "cascading" - but I have no idea how to do this.
How do I use my Cisco router to access my wireless network that is already there?
This has been driving me crazy, any help would be appreciated.
Would just like to add in that this article was of NO help to me.

  • Help: WRT160N Version 3

    Hello,
I have a WRT160N Version 3 with Time Warner Cable Road Runner in NYC and I am running the 3.001 Firmware.  Yesterday morning, it appears the connection reset  itself and now my wireless connection is either intermetinent, non-working, or extremely slow when it work.  However, my wired connection is operating normally.  I tried to resets and power cycles last night to no avail.  I am running one PC with Windows XP and a MacPowerBook, and of course Iphones and Blackberrys connecting wireless off and on, everything was running great up until yesterday.
Could anyone please help or suggest a correction?  Is this a Time Warner issue or a router issue?  Is there anyway the Cable Company could have something wrong on their end that would affect my wireless connectivity?  I wouldn't think so if my Wired LAN connection is fine, but I am not sure?  Please help as this is extremely frustrating and tiring, I spent many hours trying to get this to work last night to no avail.
    Thanks

If your Wired computer is working fine, then i don't think it might be the problem with your ISP. In these case you need to check the Wireless Settings of your Router. When you login to the setup page of your Router, you can make the following changes under the Wireless Part of your Router.
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...

  • WRT160N V3 Xbox 360 trouble router randomly resetting PLEASE HELP

For Christmas 2009, I received the wrt160n v3 Linksys by Cisco router. This router worked fine until about early November of 2010, when I would turn on my xbox to play a multiplayer game, and the router would randomly reset and i would lose my connection, as well as all the computers connected to the router would lose their connection to the internet. I actually sent that one back to linksys through an rma and received a new one of the same model and version, and I am still having the same problem. The router even resets when I am not on my xbox, simply just on my laptop. It is incredibly frustrating and cannot seem to find any help on the internet. Does anyone else have this problem? Are there any solutions? Is it my router or could it be my xbox screwing everything up? Any help is welcome, thank you very much

nevermind my router just reset while playing xbox. mtu is 1365, i unchecked that box, and opened my nat type, and it still reset. im starting to get extremely dissatisfied with your products
