WRT54G disconnect problem

I have been a loyal Linksys (CISCO) user since buying my 1st Wireless Access Point router/4-port Switch (BEFW1154 v2) in 08/2002. I upgraded to a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router (WRT54G v8.00.2) in 11/2007. My home wireless network supports; IBM Thinkpad (Windows XP) and Lenovo Ideapad (Windows VISTA Home Premium). About a month ago I started having disconnect issues with the WRT54G. Both laptops experienced the disconnects. Initially, I unplugged the WRT54G power for about 1 minute then plugged it back in. This did not resolve the disconnect problem. I then tried to unplug the cable modem and WRT54G power. Wait about 1 minute then plug in the cable modem allowing it to reset and sync up. Then I plugged in the WRT54G. This temporarily resolved the problem for a few minutes but the disconnect problem returned eventually. I reset the WRT54G to the factory default configuration and reconfigured it for my home network. The disconnect problem was not resolved by taking this action. I contacted Cablevision who provides my broadband Internet access. They could not identify a root cause for the disconnect problem. To determine if the root cause was something other than the WRT54G, I reinstalled the BEFW1154. I have not had a disconnect problem since taking this action leading me to believe that the WRT54G is bad. I would appreciate any suggestions that might resolve the disconnect problem except for a suggestion to purchase a new router. THANKS
Solved!
Go to Solution.

I too have had the disconnect problem. I am thinking now that my problem started when I moved the Router next to the printer. I think when the printer is on my router disconnects. I have the printer off this morning and have no problems. Last night the printer was on and both my wife's and my Pc's would lose connection to the router until I unplugged it and plugged it back in.
Is it possible for a printer to throw off the connection? I know my cell phone causes a lot of noise in the speakers if I have it next to the PC.

  • WRT54G Disconnects and REQUIRES a Power on Reset

My WRT54G disconnects once per day and requires a power on reset to get it back on line. It's version 6 with the most recent firmware.
After a wonderful chat session with Linksys this AM and then a subsequent email to Support, I've received NO satisfaction.
Anyone have a suggestion as to a solution???? I'm at my second warning and about to be banished!!!!
The router crashes each and every day and it seems to be DIRECTLY related to how much the kids use the wireless connection - you see they were gone for two weeks and there were NO (ZERO) crashes, they came home and started to use the wireless connectivity and BINGO, I'm pulling the plug on the WRT faster than OnnagokorO and his cohorts can edit/delte my posts.
Please, please tell me there's an answer.
(Edited a small part post for guideline compliance. Thanks!)

To dtv --- my guess is that the kids are running some high bandwidth program that makes multiple simultaneous Internet connections.  This tends to use a lot of memory in the router, causing it to crash.  Many programs can cause this, but it is common in peer to peer networking programs, such as BitTorrent.
If this is the case, limit the number of simultaneous connections that BitTorrent can make.
Please also note that Linksys recently posted a firmware upgrade that should help with BitTorrent problems.

  • WRT54G disconnects every 15 sec

My WRT54G disconnects me from the network every 15-16 seconds or so. It lasts maybe a a second or so, but it's enough of a lag to put an end to any downloads or some streaming media.
I am connected to the router wirelessly
The router is connected to my cable modem.
I think the problem is with the automatic DHCP setting which refreshes the IP address again and again.
    Any ideas?
Message Edited by Newcastle on 10-02-200611:57 PM

Hi, This will not be a DHCP issue since the DHCP refreshes the IP once every 24 hours.
What you need to do here is tweak the wireless settings a bit to get better connectivity.
access the router using http://192.168.1.1 "admin" is the password.
Go to the wireless section and change the SSID to any name you prefer, select channel 11 and save settings.Once back, click on "advanced wireless settings".Change the beacon interval to 50 and reduce the RTS and fragmentation threshold by 40 each.save settings and restart the wireless PC.
NOTE :- the above changes should be made using the wired PC.

  • WRT54G disconnect ocassionally

My WRT54G ver 7.00.4 ocassionally disconnected itself for no reason. I have email to the support staff and they have requested me to try various method but till now it is still the same problem. This device I bought in Feb 2007 and already having problem which Linksys support staff are not able to solved it. What could be the problem....?????
My setup is very simple. An ethernet modem, Linksys router, 1 desktop PC and 1 Laptop. Both are connected using the RJ45 cable. Wireless is disable. If I connect the cable directly between either the desktop or laptop to the modem, I don’t face the disconnection problem. Once I changed the cable to connect to the router, few hours later the problems will occur.
    Please advise.

When you lose connection, try going into your router's web-page utility, go to the Status tab and check if you're connected or at least have an IP address. If not click connect or try to grab and IP address from your ISP. When your status is "connected" with an IP address, try to access a website. I'm not sure why the router loses its connection, possibly buggy firmware, your ISP might have glitched at that particular moment, but when I lose connection I check the Status tab and if I'm not connected I click connect which usually assigns a new IP address and I can connect to website again.

  • WRT54G Disconnects FTP at 10 minutes

My new WRT54G disconnects passive FTP uploads at exactly 10 minutes.
    every...
    single...
    time...
Firmware version 8.00.5. As it stands now, this router is useless to me, except perhaps as an access point. Searching this forum, I see that this is apparently a known and long standing problem with the WRT54G.
FTP works fine with my old BEFSR41.
I must be able to upload large files via FTP. Does Linksys have a timeline for a solution for this issue? Should I just use the WRT54G as an access point through the old router until Linksys manages to fix the firmware in the WRT54G?

To dtv --- my guess is that the kids are running some high bandwidth program that makes multiple simultaneous Internet connections.  This tends to use a lot of memory in the router, causing it to crash.  Many programs can cause this, but it is common in peer to peer networking programs, such as BitTorrent.

  • FXO to FXO disconnect problem - Part1

    Hi,
I have 2 sites connected through an hdlc leased line. Each site has router 1750 with one VIC - 2FXO.
Once a call is placed both FXO are stuck in the off hook state. So there is no way to make another call unless I shut down and turn on the ViC again.
I read the "famous" fxo disconnect problem file from Cisco but it didn't help.
    I need to know:
    1) Is this problem a bug on the FXO ports ?
    2) Is this problem from the analog PBX side ?
    3) How to solve this problem?
    Thanks

    Hi,
you can use FXS cards......you don't have any problem......
Problem is in disconnect reason....FXO card no detect disconnect tone from PBX....
Czech firm 2N sell special "disconnect module" fot these card......
    (I'm sorry for my English...:o)

  • FXO Disconnect Problem

    Hello,
I just would like to ask some ideas on FXO disconnect problem having a setup of FXO to FXO termination on both sites. I am using a VIC-2FXO-M2 on both Cisco 1760-V Router and these fxo ports are terminated to the PABX local. The voice port will disconnect 30minutes (approximately) after the call is terminated or it remainded off-hook although the call is already done.
We tried some fine tunings like enabling "battery-reversal" command, setting the timeout call disconnect to 5sec, timeout wait-release to 5sec. But the problem is still the same.
What is really the ideal fxo disconnect solution that we can do to lessen the 30minutes delay from off-hook to on-hook.
Looking forward for your great ideas.
    Thank you.
    Vivira Alastra

    Dear Vivira,
The disconnection issue of FXO ports can really produce some gray hairs...
I have worked integrated to some cheap Panasonic PBX's in Nigeria where documentation is really scarce.
The solution that worked - but don't ask me how - was to try different combinations of CPTone on the Voice Ports. That did the job in our case.
You can also try the tedious job of measuring the disconnect tones ans analyse it e.g. in CoolEdit and then set up a Voice Class where you define the tones.
But try the CPTone settings first.
    Good luck.
    Peter

  • Disconnect problems on FXO Groundstart lines

    Hello all,
I have a CCME customer, IOS 12.3-11T2. with 6 FXO ground-start lines on a 2821 platform. They are using PVDM2-32’s and two 4Port FXO cards. The call flow goes as follows.
Incoming call from PSTN, hits fxo port which has a “connection plar” to a number which calls a script in CUE. From the script if you press “0” it calls the reception.
    All the above works fine.
If the reception hangs up the call and the PSTN party does not right away, the PSTN party hears a repeating click. If the PSTN then hangs up and you do a “show voice port summary” it shows as follows
    IN OUT
PORT CH SIG-TYPE ADMIN OPER STATUS STATUS EC
    ========= == ============ ===== ==== ======== ======== ==
    0/1/0 -- fxo-gs up up idle on-hook y
Note that the OPER stat shows “up” and the out status shows “on-hook”
Until that OPER status changes to “DORM” every call after the first one will get answered by this port and the PSTN party will hear the repeating click in their ear. It takes up to 30-40 seconds for the call to clear.
If the PSTN party hangs up first the OPER stat will go to “DORM” almost immediately.
    Any thoughts?
    Ryan

use the following commands to shorten the time the router waits before determining that the call needs to be dropped due to disconnect tones.
    on the voice port
    voice-port 1/1/0
    timeouts call-disconnect 5
    timeouts wait-release 5
these will shorten the IOS default times of 30 sec & 60 sec down to 5 seconds.
use the following link for more info on the FXO disconnect problem.

  • Iomega Hard Drive Disconnecting Problems / iMac Freezing on shutdown/restart!

I had noticed in the past week that when my iMac is in sleep mode that sometimes it is unresponsive when I try to wake it up to use it again, and then after a few minutes of trying, I have to manually power the computer on, like it randomly will shut itself down if it's in sleep mode for a longer time, but like I said, this is random.
The BIGGER problem I've encountered in the past two days is that when I go to eject my Iomega eGo Blue 1tb hard drive, the drive will not disconnect, the name on the sidebar of my finder just changes from black to grey underneath the devices row and on the desktop the Iomega icon turns lighter to indicate that it is not in use, but I cannot eject the drive, so it's still somewhat connected to the computer. I've had this drive for over a year with no complaints as I use it on both my MacBook (2009) and iMac (which I purchased new in October '11).
Instead of just turning off my hard drive or unplugging it, I try to restart my computer; however when I do that, the restart get stuck and nothing ends up working. I also have tried to shut it down with no luck, I then go to holding down the power button until it manually shuts down.
I also plugged in the hard drive to my MacBook and am not experiencing any mounting or disconnecting problems with it. I am very afraid that this may cause my Iomega to crash before I can get another hard drive to back everything up with!
I'm concerned that this could be a problem with both the hard drive and my Mac; does anyone have any input on this? I will probably end up taking it into the store or calling AppleCare, but I wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar problem.
    Thank you!

First reset the SMC, you may need to do this 2-3x. Also reset the PRAM, again 2-3x. Finally restart the computer in Safe Mode to reset some of the caches, it's possible one is corrupt. When resetting the SMC & PRAM please carefully follow the instructions below:
    SMC RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    PRAM RESET
    Shut down the computer.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Yahoo Webcam and WRT54G v5 anyone having disconnect problems?

Hi all..i have the WRT54G v5 router hooked up to my cable modem.
When ever i use my web cam it will stay connected for a little bit but then just disconnect and reconnect and its not only on one computer it happens to another computer hooked up....one is wired one is wireless....i have added the port trigger in the router for yahoo's ports inbound and outbound 5100 and it still does it,,,,my next step to eliminate that its the router doing it is to just have one computer running off the modem itself and try it i will do that soon but what i was wondering is if anyone else has had this problem or is having this problem rite now and has any suggestions on whats going on?

  • WRT54GS / Vista Home Premium / Media disconnected Problem [NEED HELP]

Okay, I of course own the Linksys WRT54GS
My wife's HP laptop connects wirelessly runs Visa Home Premium and usually auto connects to the wireless network.
Our network shows it is available, excellent strength, when she clicks to join a network, it acts like it is going to connect then "Windows can not connect to network"
She tried to diagnose and repair to correct the problem in Vista and "Can not correct more than one problem at a time" This is strange because she is not trying to correct any other issue.
I had her connect using the ethernet cable and she is able to get online.
I own a Gateway laptop that runs XP Pro and I am able to connect to the router via wired or wireless with no problem.
I am also able to connect wirelessly with my iPod touch with no problem.
Can anyone help me with this issue?

Click start >> Control Panel >> Network and Sharing Center >> Manage Wireless Networks, here remove all the networks present and close the Window...
Click on Connect to a Network and try to re-connect to your Network, it should ask for your Network Key/Password, enter the correct password/network key and click Connect...
It should connect...Once you are connected you should restart the computer, it should connect to Internet...

  • WRT54G: Pinging and Disconnection Problems

I have the WRT56G and both the wired and wireless connections are very weak. When connecting my computer directly into my cable modem, the connection is very fast and rock solid. For example when I ping linksys.com when connecting directly into my modem, the average latency is about 15ms. When pinging linksys.com using the WRT54G, the latency is a horrendous 3800ms. I've already swapped things 4 times already and every time is the same. Constantly getting disconnected from games, getting 404 errors when visiting websites.

Well try upgrading the firmware of the router & keep on holding tightly
the reset button in such a way that power light is blinking on the
router & then do a complete network power cycle i.e., unplug the power
cables from the modem & from the router & then plug in the power cable to the modem first once all the lights are solid green you could plug in the power cable to the router & check out it will definately work!!
Also, the advanced wireless settings to Beacon Interval=50,Frag
thres=2306 & Rts thres=2307 & then uncheck a Block Anonymous Internet Requests & it will definately work!!!
