WRT54GC - Tons of trouble

Here are the problems I'm having with this product, I'm ready to return it to Office Depot.
Three problems, in detail below:
1) getting kicked off an online. Noticing slowdowns and seeing AIM shut off every 20 minutes and pop back on.
2) low signal anytime you get 15 feet from the router
3) after a call with support I tried to change some settings (had been restored to defaults mainly) and found that I can't connect with these new settings! Normally I'd get kicked on then I'd get back after the new settings were changed. Now it just won't connect. Just a change to channel and from "Mixed" to "G-only"
HELP! Details below:
1) I set up this router and I operate a laptop about 2 feet away from it. Even that close and with an excellent signal I noticed I was getting kicked off AIM about once every 20 minutes. I'm pretty certain this isn't Comcast but the router since the router has given me other problems. It's extremely annoying, like the service clicks off and on and I find that the internet slows down to a halt every once in a while. Connections time out, etc. etc.
2) After about a week of fine operation in other rooms of the house my roommate, who's room is about 20-30 feet away from mine noticed she wasn't getting a good signal. She was getting barely any. The situation wasn't any better in any other part of our 800-900 sq. foot apartment. Eventually she had to sit in my room about 10 feet away from the router to get a decent connection. I took my laptop out to the living room and got intermittent connection out there as well.
3) We called support and after an hour they told us we had to get a new router. Rather than that, I visited this forum. I noticed some tips that came up for improving low signals and I went to change the settings on our network. Well, well, well. After changing the channel to 1 (from the default of 6) and putting it on "G-only" instead of "mixed" the thing will no longer connect to our SSID. Not at all. It shows our network name, and a strong signal, I click connect and it doesn't do it. It won't repair the connection. I had to reset the router entirely and use it under the SSID "Linksys" to get online again. After trying again to change back to my SSID I get the same problem. OH NO! Even if this router is breathing it's last I want to use it securely. I want to experiment with the suggestions here and now I can't. I'm about to give up.
Thanks.

Update on Issue 2:
I'm actually starting to believe its related to my Faderport.  I initially tested to see if it was the problem by unplugging it while logic was on and the problem still occured, but I closed down logic and unplugged it, then started it back up and it seems to be working fine as of now.

  • [solved] Having Tons of Trouble Setting up MPD

This is the second time I have tried setting up MPD, and I am having a circle of issues. If I fix one, I get another. And now I hit a wall.
I'm following the per-user configuration method from the wiki, and for now, I just set up the "required" variables in the config file (located in /home/(my_user)/.config/mpd/mpd.conf) which are the database and log files (and also pid).
Now, after getting that set up, and running
    mpd
    , I get this error:
socket: Failed to bind to '[::1]:6600': Address already in use
I have tried changing the network IP to 127.0.01, to 0.0.0.0, to localhost... I have tried uncommenting "user" and changing it to myself, I have tried adding the optional variables (music directory, pid, etc.) and nothing works.
    If I run
    mpd --kill
    I get
fatal_error: unable to read the pid from file "/home/cyber/.config/mpd/pid"
And yes, I checked to make sure that the pid file is set up correctly.
Here is my mpd.conf file, again located in .../.conf/mpd/...:

I'm not an MPD expert, but did you verify that the error isn't indeed valid?  You can check what is going on at port 6600 with (run as root):
    # lsof -i :6600
I had to install lsof, but there was no output at all. Nothing.
    I assume that's good?
    Edit:
However............. After installing lsof and running the command you gave me, I ran mpd just for kicks and... it worked. (Of course, it spit out an "error" since I have no music directory defined yet) but it worked. Let me add some music and start up ncmpcpp and see if it works!
    Edit2: AND, it's suddenly working!
All I did: install lsof, run your command, try running mpd for fun, installed ncmpcpp, and it works perfectly.
    Thanks.
    *solved!* That was silly.

  • Tons of trouble with Logic Studio since day one

    Logic 9.1.5
    Os 10.6.8
    Issue 1:
I haven't touched logic in months because I've hated the fact that I had issues with it to begin that no one could ever solve. My first issue was that certain instruments that were installed couldn't be opened. I was greeted with a message saying something along the lines that that instrument couldn't be found. I had installed everything fresh on an external drive. All options that could be installed on a second drive were installed there. I dont remember the exact name of the issue/error because its been months since I've even opened logic cause its been nothing but a problem for me. I did hours of googling searching and only found one thread of people having the same problem but ended in the guy saying his tech support dude was gonna talk to him and it never go resolved.
    Similar to issue one:
There's supposed to be 6 jam packs, but only 2 of them show at the bottom of the Library list. I believe they are: Jam Pack Voices and Jam Pack World Music. I looked up the location of where these jam packs are supposed to install and all 6 of them are there in folders.
    Issue 2:
I would LOVE to get this fixed, but I don't even know exactly the issue anymore, so I've kind of gotten over this. I recently opened logic after not touching it for months, after a huge update. I now have this annoying midi issue. It seems as if the midi is CONSTANTLY being triggered on whatever track is being highlighted. But the sound is all distorted. I might be about to shoot a video for you guys to see if that helps. Ive only got 3 peripherals. An axiom 49 midi controller, a presonus faderport, and a m audio fast track ultra 8r...all of which I turned off and unplugged and still had the problem. It happens on old sessions and new sessions. As soon as an instrument is selected, it starts triggering it and cutting into whatever being played.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME if you have any clue on how to resolve either of these issues. I've done SO much research and have found nothing. I only gave up on logic because I haven't ever gotten it to work correctly. When I did mess with it, I enjoyed it. I'm a pro tools guy who wants to expand his options, but this is really causing me to never touch it again.
Ill report the specific error name to the first issue when I see it again. It happens when I'm searching through sounds, Ill go to click on one and itll just pop up saying something about it not being found, or exs24 sampler can't be found or something like that. Though I installed them all on the hard drive...everything. Also, I have tried re-indexed my logic library like everyone suggest and nothing has changed.
If you can help, please do so. If this is in the wrong section, I apologize now.
    Update to Issue one:
This is the error message I get one clicking on certain instruments:
"EXS24 instrument "Fingerstyle Electric Bass.exs" not found."
This error happened on my old macbook white and my brand new imac which logic was freshly installed on. Thats two separate systems both exhibiting the same issue. Even on a NEW iMAC! I wonder why no one else is having these issues.
P.S. I copied and past this from another forum on the net (gearslutz) because I wasn't getting any help or suggestions.  I would appreciate any suggestions you may have.  I can post video clips of any of the issues if anything is unclear.

    Update on Issue 2:
I'm actually starting to believe its related to my Faderport.  I initially tested to see if it was the problem by unplugging it while logic was on and the problem still occured, but I closed down logic and unplugged it, then started it back up and it seems to be working fine as of now.

  • Old photoshop user having trouble using elements

Been using an ancient copy of Photoshop for years. Got a new computer, and figured it was time for an upgrade, so I bought Elements. I've been working with it for a few days and having tons of troubles.
    1) Dell sold me Elements 8 instead of Elements 9. I did not know at the time I was getting an older version. Are there enough differences in the new version I should complain that I got an old version?
    2) I'm having a terrible time with the "Panel Bin" and "Project Bin" resetting every time I open the application. I'll get all the windows set up just the way I like them, and then when I restart the app they're scrambled or missing. I DO have "Save Panel Locations" checked in the preferences, and I would have thought that was enough. Am I missing something?
    3) Is there a way to turn off the stripe at the bottom with the Tips and Tricks icon? It's a waste of space.
    4) The Favorites panel seems handy, but so far all I've been able to add is some effects. Is there a way to add other things I use regularly, like Image Size, Canvas Size, Brightness/Contrast, and Hue/Saturation? Or is this really only "favorite effects" rather than favorite anything?
    5) After using the same grayscale tool bar since about 1993, the color icons on the tool bar now look cartoony and just plain weird. I guess I'll get used to them eventually, but is there any way to turn on the old icons?
Sorry that's a mass of questions at once. I'm just feeling a little lost in the new interface. Thanks in advance for any help.

    Some thoughts
    1. You could download the trial of pse9 and see if the hassle is worth it.
Some things are better and some are worse.
    2. Are you docking the panels or trying to keep them free floating like
your older version of photoshop did?
    3. Yes that happens when start elements with your internet on.
        See this page
    4. You can only add things from the effects and content panels to the favorites panel
like effects(actions), frames, layer styles etc.
    5. The only change in the interface is light or dark:Preferences>General.

    Frustrated hk user.
No, restore will restore back to 3.0 as 2.2.1 is no longer available. I had a few problems with 3.0 but i restored it and set it up as a new iphone which made my iphone run SWEET. I would try that before you went to Apple. Going to the Genius battle is really a last resort after the restore. Hope it works.

  • IPhone will not sync at all with computer

Been able to use this computer forever with every generation of iPhone and iPod I've had (which isn't much, but I know it works). Anyways, ever since the IOS 7 update I have had a ton of trouble getting new music and new playlists onto the phone. It is starting to get ridiculous.
My iPhone 5 is version 7.0.4
    iTunes is version 11.1.3
    (both are the current versions)
I am not able to sync new music onto the phone, whether it's bought or ripped from a CD. I cannot even delete music from the phone, so I can't unsync then sync again. It's literally like my phone is locked and I can't do anything to it right now for the past 2 or 3 weeks.
I've tried a lot of things and looked up how to fix it here, but nothing has worked so far. I guess if you have any suggestions please let me know. Not sure why, when so many people buy these overpriced items, these things seem to always have problems with basic functions.

    EDIT:
I just bought another song to test it again and it seemed to sync.... but I get most of my music from CD rips. What could be causing them to not sync?? Sorry for the change in subject.

  • Firewall and Internet Sharing dont mix

After talking to AppleCare, looks like my firewall is not letting me sync to my AppleTV because I am using Internet Sharing to connect it to my Mac Mini (PPC) and get to the internet through the Mini's ethernet. I have no Airport Express or Extreme.
He says that enabling "iTunes Music Sharing" only opens that port for ONE of the network connections (ethernet or airport), but not both. Hence AppleTV wont sync with the firewall on. Only with it turned completely off.
Anyone out there know different? Or know of a workaround to open the port for both networks somehow? (sorry if I don't speak the wireless-magic lingo well)
This is my first wireless device- so I'm a noob. Sorry.

I have had a ton of trouble syncing.
Can you see Apple TV in your preferences?
Does Apple TV start syncing and then drop off?
If so, open iTunes and quickly click on Apple TV and you will see the sync start. Then quickly Click on iTunes/Preferences and then on the Apple TV tab. Leave that small window open and then the sync will keep going.
    Weird butmay help.

  • Please help centering website!!

    Hello,
After researching and getting lost with so many different responses, I figured I'd ask myself to get the response I needed. I use Dreamweaver CS 5.5 and I am having a ton of trouble figuring out how to make it so my website is centered on all monitors and devices. Here is the current website: http://www.kyledake.com/
However, I am removing and adding a lot of stuff, so I thought now would be a good time to fix things. Here is the code of the homepage I am fixing up; after removing a lot fo the content. I apologize for posting all of it, I don't know specifially where to look. I use a lot of DIVs too, so if anyone has an alternate solution to get things on the site where I want them, please let me know:

  • Help Mac user help new Vista user - install itunes or not?

    Hi,
My friend has a new Vista PC and he's not a skilled user. I'm a Mac person myself. He's having tons of trouble with it and I live 2000 miles away. I'm here on a visit and have been helping him get Flash player and Yahoo IM etc installed.
Is iTunes a simple, painless, installation or does it require troubleshooting? If the latter, then we won't even try. Too little time for anything but install-and-play.
Your advice will be much appreciated.

Our luck will be problems out the wazoo. His PC is brand new and shiny, but working with it is like trying to do eye surgery on yourself without instruments or anesthesia: painful.
Maybe we'll postpone this until I buy him a Macbook later this year.

Thanks for the link. It's downloading the standalone installer now.
Still need someone to chime in if QT will install without problems on the Vista PC. This bit (with my emphasis) from Apple at the download page isn't encouraging.

  • How can I get my old pictures onto my android?

I was wondering how I can get my old pictures onto my android from my Verizon account?

    Which phone do you have?
Easiest way is to change the storage location to the removable SD card then put that in your other phone (provided it has an SD card slot)
Other options Change storage to SD card then use a computer to transfer to the new phone
Plug old phone into the computer, load the driver and copy them off the old phone to the computer, then plug new phone in and copy them to the new phone
Download JS Backup from the Play store onto both phones (provided the new one is an android as well) then on the old phone use the Device to device transfer method to create a backup, and on the new phone use the device to device import to import the pics.
Whatever you do.... STAY AWAY from Verizon Cloud. Chances are you will never see all of your pictures again and will have tons of trouble getting to them to move or do anything with them.  If you want to use a Cloud Storage, get Dropbox on your old phone and new phone, move the pics into dropbox then onto the new phone.

  • So i dropped my mom's ipad and i dont know what to do... the sound and stuff works on it but the screen is black but it still has like a backlight i really need to know if this can be fixed PLEASE HELP!!!

so i droped my mom's ipad on accedent while walking inside helping carry bags inside... and at fist no one really thought anything of it but we got inside and my stepdad went to check something on it and was like um... something wrong and i guess the fall put it into shock or something but we held down the 2 buttons and it light up but it was black and just with the back light on. And it still wont work so im not sure what to do... I know where the slide to turn it on is so i did that and it made the click noise to signal it was on and i pushed where an app would be and it went to it and made the music to the app... so it works but for some reason the screen is being all stupid... I really need to know if there is a way to fix the screen because if theres not im in a ton of trouble... please help!!!!

I doubt there is you dropped it and broken the screen
try holding the top button and the round button at bottom of screen
hold both until maybe an Apple logo appears if nothing after 20 secs
    the iPad is toast
It can be exchanged at an apple store for around $249 to $219 depending on model
    Apple do not do repairs
I would own up now before it gets more complicated

  • IPod won't sync photos and never stops syncing

60GB iPod Video. I recently updated to software version 1.2. I had tons of trouble with this update, so I did a restore. Now, I'm still running the same version, but at least it doesn't crash when looking at videos or podcasts now. However, after it syncs my music and goes to do photos, it just sits there syncing forever. No photos ever end up on the pod and I just have to eject it when it's time for me to go. I know the 1.2 update ***** baaaad, but does anyone have a workaround for this? Has Apple still not acknowledged tons of problems with the 1.2 update?
    Thanks everyone.

I had the same problem and deleted the casche. All worked ok. Then I had another problem, fixed that. However, my photos won't sync any more It just hangs. I deleted my cashe, but it don't help this time.

  • P965 Platinum, Vista, and Raid

I spent a good couple of hours skimming the boards yesterday trying to set up my two new 320 SATAII hard drives in a RAID array.  I ran into a ton of trouble, but then finally figured out part/all of my problem and got things working.  I figure this information will be helpful for anyone who is trying to do the same.  I'll post the most useful links I found at the end of this post as well...
    heres what i'm working with:
    MSI P965 Platinum
    2gb OCZ DDR2 800MHZ 2 dimm kit
36.7 WD Raptor SATAII (as system drive)
    Intel Core 2 Duo E6700
    Sapphire X1650 PRO 512MB PCI-Express
Antec TruePower TRIO 650 650W Power Supply
promise technology ultra ata 133 tx2 (the source of a ton of trouble)
originally i had vista ultimate x64 installed on a 36.7 gb raptor that was performing ok (once i did the extremetech suggested reghacks for lowdiskspace and 8.3ntfsfilenames), but not as well as my friends new computer with a blazing fast 500 gb stripe.
my bios was configured as such:
    on board raid controller: ide
on chip ata devices -> sata 1 config: enhanced
    ...configure sata 1 as: ide
    ...sata 2 configuration: enabled
i shut down the computer, and changed
on chip ata devices -> configure sata 1 as: raid
then i was able to get into the raid setup with Ctrl + I, and set up my array.  Here's where I ran into my first problem.  I figured I wanted a raid 0 because I don't care soooo much about my data being lost, and i have never had a hard drive die on me (knock on wood) in the past 8 years (guardian angel).  So setting up my array was working fine, except for i hadn't anticipated that i would have to choose an ideal strip size.  The board suggests 128k, but after much deliberation I decided since I wanted the speed benefit for my OS and programs, I wanted 32k strip size; but having a 640 stripe for just the OS and programs seems huge, so out of curiosity I tried setting up two raid arrays (both across the same drives).  The first was a 100gb raid 0 with a 32k strip size and the second was a 496.2 raid 0 with a 128k strip size.  This worked fine, but then I got to thinking... can I set up the 100 gb array as a mirror?  If so, then I get the best of both worlds since I can secure all my OS/settings/programs/documents, but I'll have a super fast (respectively) 400 gb drive for ephemeral memory and expendable data (replaceable stuff like ripped dvds, downloaded music and programs, downloaded anything...).  This would all be at the expense of 100 gb which certainly seems worth it at this case because I wouldn't have to worry about the possibility of losing all my data like everyone seems to cry about all over the internet when talking about raid stripes.  So i set it up, this worked fine... next step boot into vist ultimate and start installation.
Here proved my most annoying step, as my first problem occurred when I couldn't find the dvd/cd drive in the boot sequence menu.  I saw the usb card reader drives, my raid arrays, and my raptor... but no dvd/cd drive (of which I had two connected).  After scouring the web about that darned Jmicron chip, it appeared as if the bios cannot see the PATA drives on this board and I would have to try pressing F8 at the jmicron bios screen.  THIS IS COMPLETE MISINFORMATION.
As stupid as it is, the real problem is that the boot sequence only displays 6 (i think it's 6) bootable media, and if you have anything else it just doesn't show it.  This gave me the impression that the bios was unaware of my cd/dvd drives connected to the IDE controller.  As soon as I unplugged my card reader, the dvd/cd drives appeared in the boot sequence... thank gawd because...
i had tried plugging my dvd/cd drives into the promise ata controller (which i already know lacks a vista 64bit compatible driver), which actually allowed me to boot into the vista setup whereupon I was asked (I did NOT have to press F6, even though everyone seems to think they have to) to install the driver for the dvd/cd controller (I assumed and was right that it was asking for the promise ata controller driver).  I put the most recent drivers from their website on a usb stick, plugged it in, and the driver worked and then setup was able to see my dvd/cd drives (which is weird because how did I get to that point if it couldn't?).
Then setup said it couldn't find any drives, so I figured the problem was with the driver for the ICH8R intel raid controller.  I downloaded drivers from MSI's website, intel's, and a bunch of others, and NONE of them worked.  Setup would install the drivers, but it still could not see any hard drives attached to it.  I'm not sure what caused this problem, but my best guess is that it had to do with the promise card being plugged in.
I gave up on that and figured I'd try something else, maybe the promise card was causing the problem.  So I tried changing the ports that all my sata drives are plugged into.  The two new 320's were on 0 and 2, and I also had a drive on 3 4 and 5.  I read somewhere that intel had some array issues on 0 1 and 2, so I tried setting my 320's on 4 and 5 and moved my other drives around it.  This is also when I had the idea to remove my card reader and pull out the ultra ata 133 tx2 card.
I was able then to see the dvd/cdrom in the boot sequence, put it first, and boot into vista setup.  VISTA ULTIMATE DID NOT ASK ME FOR ANY DRIVERS AT THIS POINT.  I'm not sure if it was the sata ports I had my drives plugged into or not, but at this point vista setup saw all my drives and I chose the 100 gb array and installation went smoothly.
Excellent… now I just have to install photoshop and see if it loads in 4 seconds like on my friends new computer with the stripe.  If not, then I'll probably just cry.
Hopefully I've covered enough of the keywords in this description that anyone who has this problem will  easily find this page.  Remember:
JMICRON IDE DEVICES CAN BE SEEN BY THE BIOS
VISTA SETUP DOES NOT NEED ANY ADDITIONAL DRIVERS TO INTERACT WITH THE RAID CONTROLLER
SORRY IF THIS WAS A TON OF INFORMATION BUT AFTER ALL THE TIME I SPENT TRYING TO FIGURE THIS OUT I FEEL LIKE NO ONE HAD POSTED A FULL BLOWN SOLUTION
    Hope this was helpful

I have the very same issue except two things. When I try to see why it will not load the Array I find that the first drive (Maxtor 6V160E0) is red and considered to be bad. Did you happen to notice if your system showed the same thing?
I have moved the drives around and it still corrupts the Maxtor 6V160E0. I have not tried to move them to the end of the SATA connections. I will try that and see what happens.
Other thing was the JMicron would see my NEC DVDRW, but thought it was a ACSI and it would only read at 12X. It even stated that in the OS. I then was told by the Techs that they have not had alot of luck with NEC drives. So, I purchased a LiteOn SATA II DVDRW, connected it to the JMicron SATA connector and it came alive. I then found it to turn out worthless DVD's and CD's. Not even that Drive would read them after burning. I got so ticked about the JMicron I just shut it off in the BIOS. I hooked up the drive to the #4 port and whala, no more problems with burn. Now it reads, writes, and re-writes at the stated speeds (also I needed to update the firmware twice since I purchase the drive. The MS updates did something to it and the new firmware fixed it.). I have never been able to get a drive to work correctly on the JMicron no matter who made it.
I sure hope that MSI has scraped any board that will ever use that controller. JMircon is not my friend!
I am going to get 2 more SATA II drives and try this without having to backup all my data.

  • Why is ios5 detroying my life? i have NEVER had such a frustrating time with an apple product. its getting to the point where im about to run everything over.

ios5: great concept. HORRIBLY executed. i KNOW im not the only one having tons of trouble with this.
before, i had a large amount of grey songs, comapred to black songs in my music app (i have a 64gb 4th gen ipod touch.) for those of you who dont know what im talking about, the grey songs are unplayable, where as the black songs are. they all play on my itunes. there are no "!" next to them.
NOW, i cant even sync songs, it seems.
i CANT back-up/restore my ipod. i have 10gb of room left on my computer. more than enough to do both of these.
my mom is having trouble with her iphone as well.
this is almost becoming a deal breaker. i REALLY hope apple has a patch or something for all of this coming out very soon.
not looking for apple snobs to tell me that i should go back to using other windows oriented devices or to tell me that i didn't follow instructions properly. apple products are made for easy use, and i did the same as i used to with previous OS's.
if you can help me, please do so. i will leave this open in a tab on my browser.

well i restarted my ipod, and now songs are showing up...for whatever reason.
there are still a lot of grey songs though.
