WRT54GL & Bittorrent problem.

hay, i'm using my WRT54GL router for my ADSL connection, the line speed is about 12k/s up, 250k/s down. got 2 machines using this router, wireless one, and cabled one.
the computer that using Bittorrent is the cabled one.
now my problem is that every time i run the a BT client (not a specific one, but mainly uTorrent) it really slows my internet connection, even tho the client is configured to use only 6k/s upload.
but that's not all, the weird thing is that even after i shutdown the BT client, the connection still won't work well, page load takes lots of time and most of the time won't work at all, tho if i do managed to download something from a web page, speed can get high, but link will probably brake after some time.
i tried setting QoS, but that didn't help much, i set upload to 86 Kbps, set port 80 to High and BT port to Low.
any ideas?

Linksysinfo - How to configure WRT54GL for VOIP and-or BitTorrent
When you click on the first link in the post above, it says...
Configuring a WRT54GL to handle an existing Vonage router (WRTP54G or RTP300) and/or BitTorrent.
The instruction above is for third-party firmware. If you are using the official Linksys firmware (ver 4.30.9 is latest) then perhaps you can still borrow some of the ideas from this article.
Hope this helps,

  • RT31P2 + WRT54GL + Vonage problems

Hey guys, I've been having a recurrent issue for a while now, and lately the problem has gotten a lot worse.  Before I describe the problem, I would like to explain the exact set-up that I have to better explain the situation. (I have had this set-up for a good 4-5 years now)
    - I have vonage phone service, and they provided me with the the RT31P2 router for use to connect my phone lines to. Since this is not a wireless router, I went out and bought a WRT54GL, so I can get wireless access for my laptop.
    - In order to set up the two routers, I connected the ethernet cable from my cable modem and plugged it directly into the WAN of the RT31P2. I took another ethernet cable, plugged it into one of the ethernet ports on the RT31P2, and plugged the other end into the ethernet port of the WRT54GL.
Note: Before I did the above connections, I disabled the DHCP on the WRT54GL and changed the starting IP address to 192.168.15.2. Also set up a secure password enabled network.  For the RT31P2 router, all the settings remained the same, and it's IP is 192.168.15.1.
    - For the most part, this set up has been absolutely fine. My home phones would work with no static, no dropped calls, etc. I have one PC that is hooked up via ethernet on the RT31P2. Three laptops that connect wirelessly to the WRT54GL.
Problem:  A couple of days ago, I noticed my internet speeds became drastically reduced on the PC's that are connected via WiFi. (Normally, I would get speedtest.net results with a range of download: 9-10Mbps and upload: ~ 0.54Mbps.) The speeds I was getting instead were close to 2Mbps (download), and even lower for upload. I isolated the problem and found out that only PC's connected via WiFi were experiencing this slowness. The one PC connected via ethernet was still getting its average normal speeds. (Currently, I hooked up two laptops to the RT31P2 via ethernet and disabled the WRT54GL router, and its running at normal speeds).
I called up my ISP to come and take a look and see where the proble might be, and everything on their end seems to be fine. Since they only provided the cable modem, anything extra has to be taken care of the party that is responsible for it. So basically, everything via direct connection from Cable modem, or ethernet connection from RT31P2 is good, but my wireless connection from WRT54GL is no longer usable because of the slowness.  I have not changed the above-mentioned set-up at all, there were no hardware changes, nothing that can explain why all of a sudden devices connected to my wifi would be this slow. This issue seems to occur maybe 2-3 days every two weeks or so, but currently, it's been going on for about a week.  I think I also had a similiar problem like this sometime last year, and it took a long long time for the wifi to become stable again (close to a month). At that time, my ISP said the same thing to me - that there is no fault on their part because the signal strength was good on their end.
So does anybody have any idea/know why this might be happening with my wireless router?
*Also, another issue with vonage phone service - right when the wifi started acting up, I noticed that my home phone was getting a lot of static, making calls unbearable. I would get a dial tone, but it was absolutely impossible to carry out a conversation with that amount of static. So I called Vonage this morning, and we spent a good amount of time trying to isolate the problem.  What we came up with is the fact since I kept my cable modem and routers literally on top of each other, that it was causing some type of interference. When I moved all the devices away from each other, the static disappeared (only a little bit remained, but not a big deal). However, after I hung up the phone with vonage support, I realized that the static was not gone because I moved the routers away from each other, but the fact that the static only occurs if i have another ethernet cable plugged into the RT31P2 (which is the router where the phone lines connect to), where the other end of ethernet cable is connected to a PC. Any ideas on what might explain that? Do you guys think there is a correlation between the static on the vonage and the wifi problems, even though they are on different routers..?
I know it's a long message, but I would really appreciate if somebody would take the time to go over this post and help me out. Thanks a lot to anybody with suggestions.

  • WRT54GL Internet Problem

Hi all, since I got my WRT54GL my internet became very laggy, having spikes and very slow download speed. Also it randomly discconects and I have to manualy go to router's home page -Status - and press connect botton 2-3 times in order to connect.
It's the same thing regardles of the number of PC connected to it, or the method of connection (wired/wireless) . Also I should mention that my internet service provider is a good one , before this router I hadn't have any problems.
I run different OSs on the PC's and here are some of the router's settings :
Firmware Version: v4.30.13 (latest I think)
    Internet Connection Type : PPPoE
Connect on Demand : Max Idle Time   Min.
     MTU : 1300 ( tried 1350 -1400)
    Security Mode : WPA Personal
    WPA Algorithms: : TKIP
Group Key  Renewal : 5000 sec
    Beacon Interval: 75
    Fragmentation Threshold 2304
    RTS Threshold:  2307
      Firewall Protection:  Enabled
Block Anonymous Internet Requests  & Filter IDENT(Port 113) Checked
    DMZ / QoS Disabled
     UPnP: Enabled
Please help me if you can Thanks.
Also , a second ,unrelated question : Can I make another account for the router's homepage ? like a guest account or something , and if not what is the purpose of the User Name on the login page ?
    Thanks for reading

    - Check the option "Keep Alive" and click on save settings...Now,check.
    - You can not create another account on the router homepage.
    - The password is created for the router's setup page,so that no one can manipulate with the configuration of the router..By default the router password is "admin"..You can change the password under Administration tab.

  • WRT54GL - ICMP problem?

    Hey,
I recently bought a wrt54gl router for my home and I connected it like this:
DSL ---wrt54gl and to PC and Xbox 360 from lan port 1 and 2.
I can go on the internet from my PC no problem, but my xbox will not go on xbox live. In the xbox connnection test it will not pass the ICMP test...
My router has standard firmware and Upnp enabled.
    Otherwise it has standard settings...
I this router not capable of going on xbox live?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Okay, I have done this, but the xbox still fails the ICMP test...
Xbox now wtih static IP: 192.168.1.5
    Subnet: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DNS: Automatic.
Ports 88 UDP and 3074 both forwarded on router.
MTU: 1364 and ok in the MTU test on xbox.
    UPnP: Disabled
All tests ok until ICMP? Why?
When I plug the xbox directly into my DSL modem it connects just fine...
    Thanks again.

  • WRT54GL Admin Problem

When i go to edit some settings on my router, so port forwarding or something, and i go to click save settings it brings up a error. It says
'This Web Page is not available, The website at null might be temporarily down or it may have moved permanently to a new web address.
I need to change my NAT settings, but i can't because everytime i press save it comes up with that. Does anybody know how to fix it?

This is often caused by a communication problem between the the router and computer.
Try this to fix the problem:
You do not need an Internet connection. The router's "web pages" are built into the router.
Use Internet Explorer, it usually works.
    JavaScript must be enabled.
Use a computer that is wired to the router.
In the non-working computer, temporarily turn off your software firewall.
If you are using Zone Alarm, right click on the ZA icon in the system tray (lower right corner of screen) and then click "Shutdown ZoneAlarm", and see if this fixes your problem. If this does not work, try the following with Zone Alarm: Open the ZAISS control center, go to Privacy, then temporarily turn off Ad Blocking and Cookie Control, and see if that fixes your problem.
If you are using Noton Internet Security with the Add-on Pack, be sure to turn off the Pop-up Blocker, and the Ad blocker. Some users have reported that they needed to uninstall the entire Norton Add-on Pack.
If the above fails, disconnect your modem from the router, and try again. If this corrects your problem, then most likely you have a "modem-router" rather than an ordinary modem. Report back with this problem, and also state the make and exact model number of your modem (not the router).
If all of the above fails, power down your entire system, unplug it from the wall, wait one minute, then power up and try again.
If all of the above tips fail, then reset the router to factory defaults: Power down the router and disconnect all wires from it. Wait one minute. Power up the router, allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes), then press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release the button and allow the router to reset and reboot ( 2-3 minutes). Power down router and your computer. Wait one minute. Connect one computer, by wire, to a LAN port on the router. Boot up system. It should work, however, you will need to setup the router again from scratch.  If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
If the reset does not fix your system, then you need to download and install (or re-install) the latest firmware for your router. After the firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.

  • Troubleshoot WRT54GS - WRT54GL connection problem.

Here's the setup I had until recently: DSL -> (via wire) -> WRT54GS -> (via wire) -> WRT54GL -> (via wireless) -> computer.  Basically the GL was an access point.  Unfortunately yesterday this stopped working for some reason, so I did a hard reset on the router (30 seconds holding down the reset button), and I haven't been able to restore it. I've tried to do so via the following steps:
    1) Make sure only my laptop and power are plugged into the GL via a LAN port (and the power port).
    2) Uncheck all the boxes in the firewall section.
    3) Disable the built in firewall.
    4) *Apply Settings*
    5) Under setup, click on "advanced routing" and change it to "router" mode.
    6) *Apply Settings*
    7) Under basic setup, disable DHCP.
    8) Assign the router an IP address that's not in the GS's DHCP range (192.168.0.2).
    9) Adjust the time settings on the GL.
    10) Unplug my laptop from the GL.
    11) Plug the GS cable into the GL via a LAN port, not the WAN port.
    12) Plug my laptop into the GL to test it via a LAN port.
Here's what I do to test it (with laptop (wire) -> gl (wire) -> gs (wire) -> dsl):
    1) See if I can get a DHCP assignment from the GS on the laptop.  So far I've been unable to do this.  However, the GS's DHCP table (Status -> Local Network -> DHCP Clients Table) says it can not only see the laptop but it has assigned it a DHCP entry.
    2) See if I can ping the GS, GL or another computer on the network from the laptop via a wired connection.  So far I've been unable to do this.
    3) See if I can ping the GL or the laptop from a desktop connected wirelessly to the GS.  So far I've been unable to do this.
    4) When this fails, swear (it's cathatric at least), do a "hard reset" on the router by holding the rest button down for 30 seconds, and start over at the top.
(Please note: at this point the only active wireless is the GS.  The wireless on the GL is disabled.)
I've tried the above steps three times and it hasn't worked.  The only other thing I can think of is configure the GL to work in place of the GS and see if I can get a wired connection from my dsl.  DSL -> (wire) GL-> (wire) Laptop.
I don't know what else to try...does anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks in advance.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thank you for your suggestion, Carrot, but that didn't help.  I reset the GL, power cycled it, and set it with the following settings:
    1) All firewall options disabled, firewall disabled.
    2) Wireless disabled, ssid disabled.  I'm just trying to get this thing to work as a switch for now, after all.
    3) Router changed to "router" mode instead of "gateway" mode.
    4) IP address set to 192.168.0.2, which is out of the GS's dhcp pool (192.168.0.100 - 149).
    5) DHCP disabled on the GL.
    6) Timezone set accordingly.
I was unable, again, to get a DHCP assignment on the laptop when plugged in by cable to the GL, which is plugged into the GS.  (laptop (via wire) -> gl (via wire) -> gs)  I was also unable to ping anything, including the GL, even when plugged directly into it.
Here's what makes me say "what the heck is going on:"   If I try to ping the GL, at 192.168.0.2, from a desktop connected wirelessly to the GS (so...desktop (wireless) -> gs (wire) -> gl), Windows spits a "request timed out" back at me.  If I try to ping 192.168.1.1, something replies with a 60ms response time.
Out of curiosity, I ran a tracert from that same desktop to the GS, and it came back in 1 hop.  I also ran a tracert from this same computer to another computer, and it came back in 1 hop. I finally ran a tracert from the desktop to this "192.168.1.1" and it went out via my internet connection (it listed two ISP related hops) and found...something.  So what the heck does that mean?
All I can think of at this point is set up the GL to take over for the GS and swap routers and see what happens.
Here's a thought: Is it possible I just need to power cycle the GS?

  • BitTorrent Problems

Hi, I have the BitTorrent app, Xtorrent. This isn't exactly related to the application itself but mostly it's the connection that I'm confused about. When I am connected to my wireless router, I download my torrent files however, they only download at a maximum of 0.8 kb/s (very slow), however when I am connected to a VPN connection, it downloads super fast at maximum speeds of 300 kb/s (extremely fast). Why does this do this and is there a way that I can make so I don't have to be connected via VPN and get the same, fast result? Thank you for your time!

Torrent software essentially can make your machine both server and client at the same time. As a result your bandwidth may be affected by how the software is setup. If you don't know how to prevent it from acting as a server, find software that is easier to manage.
A note: Most Mac software that is available for download is available via FTP and/or websites. Your security risks are lower, and your download speeds normally are higher. Only use Torrent software if you can do so legally, and you don't expose yourself to external hacker attacks. http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/ and http://www.macupdate.com/ are popular sites for Mac software.

  • WRT54GL Security problem

First of all, I have two of the same routers.  One totally works, and the other one partly works.  The one that works, will hookup with or without security.  The one I am having problems with, will work ONLY without security.  Without security, it hooks up ar 54, and connects to the Internet just fine.
This router has to work with a Vista laptop, and a windows 7 laptop.  I work on computers, and the one that does not work
belongs to a customer.  Any ideas?

What type of wireless security did you use? WPA? WPA2?
Have you tried all wireless security types and none of them worked? Could be a router firmware issue. You may have to upgrade/reload the firmware.

  • WRT54GL Disconnection problem!

Hey all! I am wondering why I ever so randomly get disconnected from my router. I can go for days on end with a consistent connection, and then other times, I will end up getting disconnected a few times a day.  There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason behind it - I just suddenly find my connection dropped. I go into my wireless client and re-connect with my wireless profile, and everything is okay again.
    What is going on here?

Upgrade the firmware on the router to the latest one and change the channel to 11.

  • WRT54GL Firmware Problem

After installing the Firmware Upgrade that I found on the official website, my router went a little bit crazy. It still works in the sense that I can connect to the internet and so can anyone else that connects to it, but I can't access it to make any changes:
This is what it looks like when I log in:
    http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/6074/82156025.png
I've looked around and am not sure quite what to do.

To reset the router press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds...Release the reset button...Unplug the power cable from your router, wait for 30 seconds and re-connect the power cable...Now re-configure your router...
To configure the router.... If you have a cable connection then follow this link and if you have a DSL connection then follow this link to configure your router.

  • Known Problems Still in 5.01???

When I previously installed itunes 5.0, everything installed fine expet that the bonjour service didnt allow me to use the internet and sharing wasnt working at all. (i could stop the bonjour service from running + use itunes fine, exept for sharing.)
today i thought id try updating from my 5.0 to v5.0.1.4
Everything installed fine and to my surprise sharing was working too!! and the bonjour service seemed to be gone!
So a restart later, using my PC as normal, i try running Azureus (bittorent tracker) and its just ****. it takes ages checking the files, and when downloading speeds are slower, there are hardly any peers, and it seems to have trouble successfully connecting to any trackers whatsoever.
Im not sure what exactly causes this, and I know Im quick to blame iTunes for this problem- but after all the problems caused by this software im pretty sure it is iTunes casuing it. Is anyone else still having connection problems???

Why don't you just uninstall iTunes and see if the BitTorrent problems go away?

  • WRT54G Disconnects and REQUIRES a Power on Reset

My WRT54G disconnects once per day and requires a power on reset to get it back on line. It's version 6 with the most recent firmware.
After a wonderful chat session with Linksys this AM and then a subsequent email to Support, I've received NO satisfaction.
Anyone have a suggestion as to a solution???? I'm at my second warning and about to be banished!!!!
The router crashes each and every day and it seems to be DIRECTLY related to how much the kids use the wireless connection - you see they were gone for two weeks and there were NO (ZERO) crashes, they came home and started to use the wireless connectivity and BINGO, I'm pulling the plug on the WRT faster than OnnagokorO and his cohorts can edit/delte my posts.
Please, please tell me there's an answer.
(Edited a small part post for guideline compliance. Thanks!)

To dtv --- my guess is that the kids are running some high bandwidth program that makes multiple simultaneous Internet connections.  This tends to use a lot of memory in the router, causing it to crash.  Many programs can cause this, but it is common in peer to peer networking programs, such as BitTorrent.
If this is the case, limit the number of simultaneous connections that BitTorrent can make.
Please also note that Linksys recently posted a firmware upgrade that should help with BitTorrent problems.
