WRT54GS Wireless Router Connection Drop!!!

Hey everyone, heres my rant. I have called technical support about a dozen or more times this past month for the connection drops from my WRT54GS Wireless Router. I only use 4 devices to go online;A computer running windows xp, my Xbox 360, my PS2 and my PSP. I always have problems with ALL the devices, of which only 2 are connected wireless, the Xbox 360 and the PSP. I have updated the firmware already but the problems persists, anyone have any suggestions? Because I am ready to throw this thing out the window! LOL Any help would really be appreciated because the tech supports can't help. BTW this is my 1st replacement, reason for this is I had the same problem with my original router. Also the connection is fine when I connect directly from the cable modem to my computer or Xbox 360. What do I do??

hi....try a few things here......first off , change the MTU on the router to 1365 as it is the recommended value for the Xbox 360.....
another thing that i would like to know is if u have forwarded the ports required for the xbox , the PSP and the PS2 ? ...
in case u  have not , here are the ports that u will have to open on the router under the Port forwarding section..
The PSP and the PS2 use the same ports :-
TCP:- 10070-10080
UDP :- 6000-6999
The Xbox uses :-
TCP :- 3074 & 88 ...
let me know if u need any more information

  • WRT54G wireless router irregularly drops connection

I've had a WRT54G wireless for about 3.5 years now, with a Motorolla SB4200 cable modem connected to it to provide internet service. The router itself is connected to a desktop PC and there are two laptops that are connected to it wirelessly, one of the laptops is old and has a Linksys PCMCIA wireless card and the other laptop has wireless built in to it.
I updated to the latest firmware for the router.
For more than a year now, the wireless connection has been irregularly dropping. Sometimes it will reconnect instantly, sometimes it will take a few minutes to reconnect, sometimes it will take up to 10 minutes. More importantly, the connection drops very irregularly. Sometimes it will work for weeks flawlessly and sometimes it will constantly drop several days in a row.
Today I haven't had any problems so far, but yesterday and the day before, it was dropping a lot. What I've noticed is it mostly happens in the evening, so I'm assuming maybe there is some kind of interference.
I have been told that wireless routers do have a limited lifespan and that mine probably is just wearing out and needs to be replaced, so I picked up a new WRT54G router for $50 yesterday, however, I haven't opened it yet.
Is it likely that my router is just wearing out and needs to be replaced, or is there some kind of interference going on? I am able to pick up a number of different wireless signals from the neighbors, but they are always there. Even right now as I am connected to the network typing up this message.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for all your help wehowardjr.
I haven't actually pressed the reset button in a while, but I did unplug it for about 20 seconds then replug it just two days ago.
What is the nvram and exactly how do I clear it? I don't think I've ever doe that.
I use a laptop that has the wireless built in and I'm the one who uses the computer the most in the house, so I am the one who is noticing the connection dropping the most, so I'm not really sure if it is the problem with the laptop witht he PCMCIA card.
I'm surprised version 6 has problems. I would have assumed that it would be a great improvement over previous models, especially 1.0. I guess I should return it to the store then? Isn't there version 7 out now?

  • WRT54G Wireless Router connection problem

I recently connected a Linksys WRT54G to one notebook computer, with a wired connection. This computer uses the Vista Home Basic operating system.  I have another computer using Windows XP Home which I connect to the Internet through this Notebook through my wireless router.  However since replacing my D-Link 11 mbps router with the Linksys Router,  My second computer does not locate my new connection.  I suspect that it has something to do with the settings on the second computer, but can't figure out how to resolve this problem.  Hopefully some of you experts out there can tell me how to deal with this.

Click on the Start button >>> go to RUN>> type in "services.msc" >>
click on OK- On the Services Local page double click on the
option "Wireless Zero configuration"- Here the Startup Type should
be "Automatic"- Click on the "Start" button and "Apply" the settings
    and OK.
    Deleting Preferred Network
Click on the Start button >>> Settings >>> Control Panel >>>Network
Connections >>Here right click on the "Wireless Network Connection"
icon and select Properties- Click on the "Wireless Network" tab- Make
sure that ""Use windows to configure my wireless network settings"" is
checked- In the "Preferred Networks" box select each network name and
click on "Remove" to make it empty- Click on OK.
**Click on the "Advanced" button(below the Preferred Networks) and
    make
sure "Access point(infrastructure) networks only" is selected- And
    also
make sure that "Automatically connect to non-preferred networks"
    should
be unchecked >> click on "Close" and click on OK on main properties
    window.
    Connecting to Wireless Network (WLAN)
Click on the Start button >>> Control Panel >>> Network Connections-
Right click on the "Wireless Network Connection" icon and select "View
Available Wireless Networks"- If you see your wireless network in the
list, highlight it by 'single' clicking on it- Now click on
the 'Connect' button below- If your wireless network is secured, it
would ask you to provide the network key- Provide the wireless network
key and confirm it again in the confirmation box and
click "Connect" & you should be able to go Online Wirelessly!!!

  • Dial up connection sharing via WRT54G wireless router

Can someone help me out?  Here's my issue
I have an XP based desktop computer that connects to the internet via a dial up 56K modem.  I would like to share the connection with my new XP vista laptop using the wireless adapter on the laptop.  I have a Linsys WRT54G wireless router.  The desktop pc with the connection I want to share is connected to the router via ehternet cable.  How do I go about configuring the laptop wireless & the router to allow for this.   I assigned a static ip 192.168.1.253 to my desktop from the router (192.168.1.100).  When I enable ICS it changes the ethernet to 192.168.0.1.

Your connection download speed should be about the same 8-9Mbits, whether you are wired directly to your modem, or wired through your router .
You said you reset the router to factory defaults and that it was working better.  Did the download connection speed through the router go to 8-9Mbits/sec ?  If it is still 5-6 Mbits, then this suggests that something in your modem-router system is not setup quite right.  If you still have this slow speed problem, then please post the following info:
    1)  Your ISP (internet service provider)
    2)  Your modem model number and version.
    3)  Open your router's setup pages, and go to the Setup tab.  List all your settings in the "Basic Setup - Internet Setup"  section.
    4)  List the operating system (Windows XP, Win 98SE, etc.) on the wired computer that you are using for the test.
After you list this info, hopefully someone in this community will be able to guide you to optimizing your settings, given your ISP and equipment.

  • WRT54G Wireless Router Problem. Need Help!

I'll start with the basics of my situation and if more details are needed, I will provide to the best of my ability.
I have a comcast cable internet connection.  I have 6 computers in my house. Two of them are downstairs (which is where our modem is.) The other four computers are upstairs.  All of these computers are Desktop computers with the exception of one laptop.
My laptop (which is Windows XP) can pick up a random wireless signal from the room it is in.  I also found out a way to share the internet connection on the computer by going into the properties of my network connection and enabling internet sharing on it.  This means if I connect a network cable from my laptop to another computer, I can leech the connection from my laptop and have internet access on the other computer.  I also  had a switch that I used to connect the other 3 computers upstairs by means of the laptop.  The problem was, the laptop was using someone else's wireless connection in the area, and it wasn't strong enough to keep up a constant connection.
I decided, if I can leech someone else's wireless connection, why not have my own.  So i recently bought WRT54G Wireless Router and set it up on one of the computers downstairs (because that's where the modem is).  It works fine as far as connecting my laptop to the internet from upstairs.  My laptop can access the internet through the connection I set up in the LELA program.
Here is the part I am confused about.  Everything is plugged in correctly as far as the router is concerned because the laptop can access the internet.  But when I connect an ethernet cable directly to one of my other computers (which are Windows Vista, but I didn' t have a problem with it previously when I was leeching someone else's connection), the connection drops on my laptop, and the other computer still can't access the internet.  A notice pops up that says its trying to identify the network, but it gives an error that says there is something wrong with the DNS.  As soon as I disconnect the ethernet cable connecting my laptop to one of the other computers, the connection is fine again on the laptop.  It's only when I connect the computers together that the connection drops.
I just don't understand why it wouldn't work when I created my own network if it worked with another network with no problem.  My whole point in getting a wireless router was to have a router within good range to keep up a constant connection on my other computers that aren't in range of the modem downstairs.  I just don't know where else to look.  I'm not sure if it can be fixed on LELA, manually through my wireless settings, or if it could be a problem with one of my computers' settings.  I've tried many different things and I'm not sure what else to do so any help is most definately appreciated.  I feel like I've tried everything.  I know it's possible because I've one it before, I just need the help because I'm not much of a networking person and I don't know what I should start with to make this work.
Thank you to anyone who can help or even point me in the right direction.

Access router setup page ...Click on the Wireless tab on the Setup page- Here Wireless Network mode should be mixed- Provide any non-linksys name .... Set wireless channel to 11- And wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on "Save Settings" >>Now Click on the Sub tab under wireless > "Wireless Security" Change the Wireless security mode to WEP/WPA ...type in the key & click save settings .... >>>>Click on Advanced Wireless settings>>Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings" Check the connection once again & see if it works or not ...

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 wireless Networking with LINKSYS WRT54GS wireless router

I have a HP Officejet Pro 8500 wireless printer conneted via WiFi to my LYNKSYS WRT54GS wireless router.  I do not have a USB cable or ethernet cable plugged to the printer.  I am able to use the 'scan to email button' and the 'scan to network folder' button on the front of the printer and I can pint from the PC to the printer with no problems.
I installed the HP printer software from the CD, choosing network/wireless connection, without having to install any USB cables from the PC to the printer in the process.  many posts in the forum mention having to connect USB cables in the wireless installation process.
Can I install the software in the same fashion on the other two laptops? Or, do I need to do something differently?

The USB cable is used on those printers which do not have display or front panel wireless setup is not possible. We configure the wireless settings during install and save those settings in printer's memory by transferring through USB cable. Therefore the USB is plugged in during wireless installation temporarily. In your case I don't think plugging in USB cable is necessary as the printer is already on network and had IP address. Connect the laptops on wireless network and proceed with regular install, the printer should be detected automatically.

  • Does the Xbox 360 wireless adapter even work with the WRT54G wireless router?!!? If so, how???

I just bought a WRT54G wireless router (Ver 8.0; firmware updated to latest).  I have successfully connected my wireless laptop using WEP security, but I'm at wits end trying to get the Xbox 360 wireless adapter to work.  (It worked just fine with my Netgear router until that router recently died.)
When I do the "Test Media Connection" routine (you XBox 360 users know what I'm referring to), the Xbox immediately recognizes the Network Adapter and indicates that it is connected to the Wireless Network, but it inevitably fails the next step in the process:  IP Address.  I have the set-up for the IP address to be assigned automatically by the router (which is set for  DHCP Server enabled).
I have gone around the mountain innumerable times myself and then with well-meaning friends who say try this, try that, try this, try that.  I've had to re-establish my laptop set-up so many times I wanna scream!
Are the Xbox 360 wireless adapter and the WRT54G even compatible?  If so, what am I missing here?  I'm not too technical and obviously in over my head, but this ought not be that hard.
Please, please do NOT respond unless you KNOW the answer!  I don't mean to be curt, but I'm over / past "suggestions to try."
Thank you VERY much for your time and consideration if you can help me.

I don't think that the X-BOX adapter is not compatible to wireless rotuer .... there are few settings you can try on the router ... Access router setup page ... Please click on the tab "Application and gaming" and click on sub tab "Port range forwarding" 1) On the first line in Application box type in "Xbox", in start box type in 88, in end box type in 88, in protocol keep it both, in ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and give a check mark on enable box. 2) On the second line in Application box type in "Xbox", in start box type in 3074, in end box type in 3074, in protocol keep it both, in ip address type in 192.168.1.20 and give a check mark on enable box. 3) Now save the settings 4) Once you return to the setup page, click on the tab "Administration" and disable the UPNP and save the settings. 5) Now assign the given ip address on your xbox ip address :- 192.168.1.20 subnet mask :- 255.255.255.0 default gateway :- 192.168.1.1 Please assign the dns address on the xbox primary dns :- 4.2.2.2 secondary dns :- 192.168.1.1 6) Please try to test your xbox live. Hope it works ...

    I have a WRT54G wireless router.
The issue I have is that the "wireless network connection" icon light on my laptop stays on continuously and is constantly sending and receiving data even when nothing is open...no Outlook, no browser, no programs.
I have another another desktop PC that is connected thru the same wireless router and the icon light only lights when I open a browser or transmit and receive data thru an action of mine.
With my laptop, as soon as I boot it up, the icon light comes on and stays on with all this data sending and receiving.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

You can try to see what connections are active when your laptop is connected. If you're using Windows, bring up command prompt, type "netsat" and see what connections are active to what target(s). Check Task Manager and see what applications or processes are active and using the cpu. Maybe try installing a third-party firewall (ZoneAlarm) that monitors inbound and outbound connections to determine if any rogue applications are running.

I installed the WRT54G Wireless router on my desktop and have been using the internet on that pc and my laptop (wirelessly) for a few months.  Last week I uninstalled Norton Internet Security and installed ESET Smart Security.  Now my desktop cannot get to the internet and the advisor says it does not detect a router.  But my laptop says it's connected to my network and I am able to use the intenet on it.  The router itself has all of the correct connecions and the appropiate lights are lit.  Could the ESET Smart Security Software have messed up my router firmware.  Please advise.

there seems to be consistant issues with Linksys routers according to all the posts ive been reading for the past month while i try to fix my on and off again internet connection.  its becomming very annoying.  i have asked my cable company to replace my modem, which they did and that didn't even help.  last year i bought a new linksys router thinking it would solve my problem back then.  it did for a while, then my lap top wouldn't connect any, so i sent it into have it checked and it came back with no problems.  soooooooooo apparently, while i am connected to my neighbors open connection from his BELKIN ROUTER and even though the signal is very weak............amazingly enough!! i am still online while typing this.......funny eh?? WELL........it seems to me......that i guess i wont be buying linksys anything anymore.  Especially after spending hours on the help line (INDIA) trying to reset channels and reset the router box itself.  i give up.......i  have 2 pieces of crap routers for sale cheap......any takers?  dont waste your time

  • Trouble accessing the internet on a WRT54G wireless router

I’ve run into a problem setting up a wireless network at my friends’ house. The problem is accessing the internet from the wireless PC that has a WMP11 Wireless PCI Card to a WRT54G wireless router.
The wireless PC is running Windows XP and it sees and connects to the router with “excellent” signal strength but will not connect to the internet.
The router is currently set to WEP 128 bit encryption security. I’ve tried disabling the wireless security all together but when I do that the wireless PC no longer sees the router.
I have no trouble connection to the internet thru the wireless network I have set up at my house when I bring his computer there. But my router is an older Linksys 802.11b so maybe that’s why.
Anyone have any ideas what I should try other than telling him to buy a new wireless G adapter card?

If earlier your Wireless Adapter is working fine with the same network & computer .... try upgrading the drivers of the aqdapter .... from http://linksys.com/download  .... uninstall the older drivers & reinstall newer drivers ....

  • Problem with wired computers on a WRT54G wireless router

I have a WRT54G wireless router that has been working flawlessly up until now.  On Sunday, my son informed me that his computer, which is wired wasn't connecting to the internet.  Upon further investigating, we found out that our wired computer in our gameroom wasn't connected either.  However, our main pc, which is also wired, was connecting just fine.  I checked my laptop and several other wireless devices and they were online as well.
Here's the weird thing.  In my gameroom, I have just one cable coming into the room from the router.  That cable connects to a 5 port switch which then connects to my gameroom pc, Xbox 360, and Playstation 2.  I checked my Xbox 360 and it connected to Xbox Live as soon as I turned it on so that told me that I had connectivity coming from the router and the switch.  But why was the pc not connecting?
Anyway, I restarted the router, but that didn't fix the issue.  I then restarted my cable modem, a Motorola Surfboard, and the router and the issue was resolved.  All my pcs were connecting again.
Everything was fine until yesterday when the exact same issue occurred.  This time the modem and router restarts did not fix the problem.  Again, I have connectivity coming from the router to the 5 port switch because my wired Xbox 360 connects just fine, but my wired pc does not.  My son's wired computer is not connecting, but my main pc is.  I cannot figure out how to resolve this issue.

Might be possible that the router need reconfiguration ... So reset the router...for few seconds ... after reset ... Please access the setup page of the router by launching an Internet Explorer and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field empty and provide password as “admin "" all in lower cases and then click on ok. On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings button. Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"". - Click on enable - Click on clone your PC's MAC button and then click on the Save Settings button. Power cycle the network again & see if it works ...
