X120e - Recovery DVD after Fresh Install
Hi all,
I ended up wiping the factory install of my x120e without making recovery disks first. Anyone know how to access the recovery partition to create a new system recovery disk? I tried double clicking the partition and there isn't anything in there; nor did it prompt me to make a recovery DVD.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
So...being the genius that I am, I wiped my existing installation to install a new one. (Some Windows updates have gone wonky.) And I'm unable to install a new installation of Windows due to the EFI BIOS and it's complaining that it wants a GPT driver.
Thankfully, I did install Rescue & Recovery prior to doing this and I was able to find the cdbackup.wim under "Rescue Files" but I have no idea how to point a new installation at that file or how to retreive and dump it to another computer for PXE booting. I tried to pull the file out of "Rescue Files" but it won't copy.
Thanks for your help.

Hi
Welcome to the forum!!
This message comes even if you install/reinstall the os by any means.
If you by chance still have the recovery partition, this may help you

You can check it in disk management. The partition is named

My MacBook Pro's internal SuperDrive has stopped recognizing CDs/DVDs after Yosemite install
After upgrading to Yosemite, my MacBook Pro's (early 2011) internal SuperDrive has stopped recognizing CDs/DVDs after Yosemite install. It takes them in and will eject them with the keyboard button, but they will not mount. Disk Utility shows the SuperDrive and shows the inserted media, but will not mount the disk. That button is grayed out. Please help! I still have training libraries and music I access on such media. Thx!
UPDATE: I discovered some forum posts about a similar issue with Mavericks that recommended re-installing the system to fix the problem. I realized that I rarely restart my computer unless there's an update that requires it, and decided before undertaking a full re-install of Yosemite to simply restart my computer again. THIS WORKED! The SuperDrive is now mounting CDs and DVDs. Not sure what the issue was, but if anyone else has this issue I hope this will save you hours of frustration.

IMac stopped ejecting dcd/dvds after I installed ML.
Why did my iMac(4GB, 320GB HD, ML stop ejecting dcd/dvds after I installed ML. The only way I can eject them is to force eject, not of the "normal" means of ejection work.
Maybe these will help:

NO Lenovo Windows 8.1 Recovery DVD for CLEAN INSTALL! + unable to Install UEFI MODE
Hi,
I Just bought 25 Thinkpad T431s Laptops for my company (@ISRAEL)
All of them came with windows 7SP1 Installed And Recovery is Windows 8 (not 8.1 even though 8.1 is out for a yr!)
The Install process takes 3 Hours!!! Just for upgrading to windows 8.
Then I need to upgrade to 8.1 - the process is about 3 hours more! Because I need to Register And create Microsoft account for each user then to verify the account.
After that I need to Log with the account to the PC And then Download the update (3.5GB) And Install it.
IS ANYONE AT LENOVO THINKS THAT ITS ACCEPTABLE?
DO I WORK FOR LENOVO? DO I NEED TO SPEND 6 HOURS FOR UPGRADING EACH LAPTOP?
Don't forget that after that I need to uninstall all the bloater from the PC. Like Symantec AV (Because Enterprise company's uses Enterprise Class AV, FW And other software. We uses Kaspersky Enterprise, ESET, And others...)
AND ABOVE ALL.
If I want to Install Original Windows 8.1 I can't!
Because the OS Recovery DVD is not bootable And contain special recovery files with special extensions. Also, there is no PRODUCT CODE! Just "WINDOWS 8" sticker logo on the back of the notebook.
SO I WANT TO KNOW WHERE AND HOW(!)
I CAN GET A WINDOWS 8.1 ORIGINAL ISO IN ORDER TO INSTALL IT ON ALL MY PC's.
I want to know why I can't Install Just the "OPERATING SYSTEM RECOVERY DISK" (A standard clean Install)
== When I tried with my own Windows 8.1 Pro VL \ RETAIL ISO to Install it didn't pass activation==
==================== not even with the extracted key from the bios=====================
FYI - WHEN I BUY DELL OR HP LAPTOPS I'M GETTING A WINDOWS 8.1 PRO X64 BOOTABLE DVD DISK in addition to the 2 DVD RECOVERY DISKS. (So I am able to Install windows Without all the that you And them put into the recovery disk set).
Customer service in ISRAEL said that this is not possible! And that the only way is:
1. Use the 3 DVD recovery disks to format And Install windows 8.0
2. Register the user with a Microsoft account
3. Log in to each PC with his own Microsoft account
4. Download 8.1 update from Microsoft store
3. Install the 3.5GB update.
4. uninstall all the bloater.
So can I please ask you to confirm the answer I got from LENOVO ISRAEL. If So, ill return the laptops And that will the last time ANY OF MY COMPANY'S WILL EVER BUY ANY NOTEBOOKS OR TABLETS FROM LENOVO!
In addition, im trying to figure out how can I contact Lenovo main office to file a complaint against Lenovo Israel.
CEO Ms. Sigal didn't do anything to try And solve the issue, the product manager Mr. Many talk with me on the phone And was very rood. At the end he hang up the phone in my face! After I proved him wrong in another issue (T440s T431s cannot be installed with UEFI Because External DVD drive does not support UEFI Install only Legacy. And there is a big different between Legacy And UEFI)
Thank you.
Moderator note; profanity / implied profanity edited. Forum RulesHi ohad, welcome to the forums,
I'm sorry to read about your experience.
I don't work for Lenovo but it would appear to me that something may have gone wrong at the sales / purchasing stage; to my knowledge the T431s is only available with Windows 7 preload, (with Win 8 recovery discs in some cases as you have), or with Windows 8 preload. A Win 8.1 preload doesn't appear to be available for the system, but I stand to be corrected on this. If you required Windows 8.1, in my opinion the better option of the two, would have been a system with the Win 8 preinstall as this would only require updating to Win 8.1
Unfortunately I also can't envisage Lenovo creating a factory image for the T431s because it must be pretty near end of life.

after a fresh install, Spotlight will need to reïndex the files on your internal disk — that happens each time a fresh installation takes place.
I see that you have OS X 10.9.2 installed. Are you planning on installing the 10.9.3 update?

Please help with a few drivers for z60m after fresh install
I got a bad virus(several actually) that I could not eradicate. I was advised to just wipe and reinstall the OS since it is not under warranty anymore. I could not find the recovery disk, must have been lost inthe last military move could not find a replacement recovery disk at the IBM website so I went out and bought an xpprof OS thinking it should not be that hard to find any drivers XP does not provide . I had no problems doing that on our acer laptop and a friends HP laptop before so was pretty confident.. Boy was I wrong this has been the reinstall from hell. I reinstalled the audiodrivers from theIBM website but the speakers still don't work. The laptop will not recognize the wireless, even after installing the drivers for that and I can't find anything out about why the dock does not work, I assume there are drivers for that too. I also have 4 ugly yellow question marks that I can't seem to get rid of in device manager. At this point I am already out the price of XP Prof but I really need this laptop my husband took the acer laptop when he deployed to Afghanistan, only because I was confident I could get this one fully functional. I see now my self confidence was badly misplaced ,even though I am working on a degree in computer technology this laptop is kicking my tush.
Is there anyone that could help please
1. help me find why my speakers still dont work even though they are recognized as soundmax in device manager
I found several references to this issue in the forums but there does not seem to be a resolution
2. help me figure out why my laptop suddenly (after the fresh install)does not know it even has a wireless capability even after numerous attempts at installing the driver(driver seems to install just finebut upon reboot there is still no wireless available
3. figure out how I can get my dock to work again
the laptop has always worked great til now and all these things were functional before the virus and reinstall of the OS)
4. get rid of ugly yellow exclamation points under Other Devices, I am sure they must be important( I am sure at least one or more of them has to do with the wireless)
sorry this is so long Im just frustrated thanks so much for anyone that can give some guidance on thishanaleia, welcome to the forum,
download and install ThinkVantage System Update, it should get the drivers for you. Please ensure you read down the site as you may need to install a patch for XP SP2.
Let us know how you get on.
Regards

Recovery Disk after Ubunti install
***HP Pavilion dv6 OS Windows 7 Home Premium OA 64-bits / Bootorder: 1st device is CD/DVD ROM Drive***Hi, I try to help a colleague but I'm facing some problems. Shortly after the purchase he deleted the recovery partition, few weeks ago his password and fingerprint were not recognised anymore. Then he decide to temporarily install Ubuntu and to buy later HP Systems Recovery DVDs wich we received today.I presume, that when installing Ubuntu, he used the entire HDD as 1 partition + 1swap partition, something like /dev/hda1 and /dev/hda2, later on he used gparted and formatted the entire partition to NTFS.When inserting now the DVD it shows: unknown filesystem > grubrescue.I am not familiar with Linux and I am wondering if is even possible to use the HP Recovery Disks in this case?Is it possible and usefull to use a partitionmanager-tool? If so what to do?Thanks for your attention, Grts.
Conditionally,Yes. The recovery partition was reinstalled, if you chose Factory Image Recovery in the Recovery Manager and then committed to allow the recovery to proceed .
"Factory Reset: Factory Reset removes all partitions, reformats the entire hard drive, reinstalls the original operating system, and reinstalls all the original hardware drivers and software. This option also recreates the required Recovery partition (usually D and UEFI partition (usually E and reinstalls the required software.
The Factory Reset option returns all of the notebook's software to the condition it was in at the time of purchase. All user changes or additions are removed. "
You can test the condition of the recovery partition in the following manner:
Open a Windows Explorer window and right-click on the recovery partition (it is usually d: or e: ) and select the Tools tab in the Recovery (e: or d properties window.
In the Tools tab --> Error-checking click on the Check now button and in the popup that is invoked, deselect the tick mark in the box to the left of Automatically fix file system errors ( we don't want to fix what isn't broken as our objective is only to check its condition) and let it run. If it returns a no errors message, that means your Recovery partition is OK and useable.
The folllowing successful scan report is from the scan of the Recovery partition in my loaner Hp Envy17-3002ea notebook.

I recently did a fresh install of the OS from online recovery. Mountain Lion was installed which I immediately upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.2. The trackpad started behaving erratically after two days. I seems that it started since I plugged one of my wifi router on the lan port. The trackpad is impossible to move as it seems to have a mind of its own. An external mouse connected works fine. Any help please !
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don’t do them all at once.

Dear Customer,
Welcome to HP Support Forum and we are glad to assist you.
It looks like you are not able to Boot into the Operating System on your Notebook.
We will surely assist you with this.
Originally the Notebook will have the Recovery Partition and that would give you an option to create a set of Recovery Disk. If you have not created those Recovery Disks when the Notebook was in working condition we cannot do that right now
As of now if you need to recover your Notebook with the new Operating System you can check if the Recovery Partition
is in a working condition or not, If yes you can easily recover/restore your Notebook
If Recovery Partition is corrupted
You need to call HP Technical Support and request for a set of Recovery Disks , So you can recover/restore your Notebook at the earliest
OR
You need call up Microsoft and purchase an Operating System with the License Key, So you can recover/restore your Notebook at the earliest
I strongly recommend you to Contact HP Technical Support over the Phone for further assistance without any delay
Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again

Last edited by helmuthdu (2011-11-17 22:05:09)I appreciate the reply.
My fresh install from the DVD finished and the problem was still occurring. I'm now zeroing the data (one pass), per your suggestion. I'll then do an install of Leopard via Firewire, as I'm unable to start it from the DVD.
I'm curious how a bad install would prevent the computer from starting from a CD/DVD. I'm able to use the install CD/DVD in other computer without any problems, so I don't believe the physical disk is the issue. When I start while holding OPTION, and insert the DVD, it comes up as a boot-able option. Also, the disk image I initially used hasn't had any issues to date.
Thanks again,
Ben -
MacBook Pro Won't Boot Install DVD for Fresh Install
Hello All:
I just received my new MacBook Pro ( 13", 2.53 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD ) and I am unable to use the OS X install DVD to do a fresh install.
When I put the DVD in while in OS X, it recognizes the DVD immediately and seems to function fine but when I reboot to use the disk utilities, that is when the problem starts.
I get the grey screen, then the grey apple logo, and then the DVD drive spins up and appears to be loading. After about 2-3 minutes of waiting, the screen goes black and the system is non-responsive.
I've tried multiple times and ways (option key and 'c' key) to boot it with the same results.
When I put the OS X install DVD into one of my other Macs, it starts up the utilities without issue.
For all intents and purposes, the system seems to have no issues with the DVD drive ( can play movies and read DVD-R disks ) but I cannot boot from it for some reason.
Any ideas? Could this have anything to do with the fact that this system has the 256 GB SSD?
Any advice is greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
- DanThank you for the repl Michael. It is greatly appreciated.
You are right, there isn't a need for a fresh install but being in IT, my natural instinct is to want to see how everything works if only out of my own curiosity. In this case the attempt to do a fresh install brought to light a potential issues.
I did indeed do the option key, the 'c' key, the disk utility option from the install media, as well as setting in the drive options of system preferences.
The install media is the media that shipped with the MacBook Pro so I would hope they shipped me the correct one but you make a great point and I will try double checking with them as well.
Thanks,
- Dan -
Slow iMac (also after fresh install)
Hello,
I am helping a friend wit his iMac mid 2011 (intel core i5, 4 GB RAM and 500 HDD). She had 10.6.8 and suddenly the iMa became very slow in every operation (boot, finder, mail, everything). She called me and I tried to debug the problem. Nothing was using much CPU o RAM and so I updated the iMac to Mavericks.
Always the same. Then I fresh installed but the iMac was slow also during the recovery mode (loading colourful spin) and while erasing the disk. Reinstalled the OS and same problem. It works for a few minutes and then it gets stuck on simple operatios. Really frustrating.
Today, again fresh installed but always the same problem.
Very weird because the RAM usage is never over 1 GB and the CPU too.
What could it be? Hardware problem?
Thanks a lot!How much free storage space?
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage
Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. -
Can't login after fresh installing gnome using gdm 3.2 [SOLVED]
I don't know if this topic was already solved, I hope someone can help me about this. I have a fresh install of arch linux (just yesterday) and installed gnome and gnome-extra packages. As usual, I go with the procedure of editing my .xinitrc (exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch gnome-session), rc.conf (...dbus networkmanager...), inittab (runlvl 5, x:5......gdm). After a reboot, gdm screen appeared, I can't find my account, then there were two choices, "Sign in" and "Not listed..."). I clicked Not listed, then entered my user and password, after that, it responded: Authentication failure/failed... or something like that. I tried it again and it's the same. Temporarily, I'm using startx or slim (depends on my mood). Can anyone help me?
here's my gdm's 0.log and 0-greeter.log respectively:
