X220 complete fan failure

I've had my X220 for about a year now. At first, I didn't experience any problems with the fan, no revving up/down like some describe, and it was pretty quiet.
After about 9 months of usage, the fan started to get pretty noisy. As I also usually have a room fan always on, I didn't care much because the room fan overpowered the laptop fan.
Then, at about 10 months ago, one fine day CoreTemp pops up a message that my CPU temp is critical, I was just watching a movie with no background stuff going on. I've checked TPFanControl and the fan wasn't running. It was also not responding to TPFanControl's smart or manual modes.
I turned off the laptop, removed the keyboard and powered it on again. The fan would spin a few revs at pretty low speed, then just stop. I allowed the system to boot like that, and tried to start the fan with TPFanControl's manual mode. When I switched the fan from speed 0 to any other speed, I could see the fan blades to move just a little bit (maybe 1mm) and then stop again.
The laptop is on warranty, but I bought it in USA, and I live in Thailand now. Also this is my primary work computer and I didn't want any unnecessary downtime, so I decided to fix it myself.
I wrote quite a lot, those not interested in the disassembly story, just skip the next paragraph.

Using an old laptop, which one year ago didn't feel slow, after being accustomed to the new one, was really sluggish. Part of the reason might be that I recently installed Windows 7 on it (it's got 4Gb RAM in it, of which the chipset can only use 3Gb). By the way, one time I had my Z61m's fan become really noisy, too (but never fail completely), I did disassemble, clean and oil the fan - and getting to the fan was much easier than on X220.
On X220 to get to the underside of the fan, you have to remove the motherboard, the heatsink assembly is screwed to the motherboard from it's underside. That's wasn't hard for me, but I could easily see messing up some small component. To remove the motherboard, I had to remove the HDD, speakers, bluetooth module, WiFi module, mSATA SSD, disconnect a few flat-ribbon connectors, unclip a few regular connectors, free the wifi antenna cables, video cable from their grooves in the bezel, remove the bezel. And then the motherboad still wouldn't come off - the two nuts holding the VGA connector have to be removed. And when I moved to Thailand, I didn't bring my 5mm hex socket with me. So I had to drive around (I live in a small city), trying to find it. Tool shops, hardware shops, computer shops didn't have it! Well, a tool shop had a huge kit of 1/4" DR tools, I wasn't gonna spend so much money just to get one 5mm socket. In the end I could find a low quality 1/4" DR sockets set in a Tesco supermarket, for $2. But  what do you know? The cheap sockets have thick walls, so the wall thickness doesn't allow it to fit around the nut (the laptop's case is in the way). Too bad I don't have a lathe... well here comes the drill to hold the socket and the angle grinder. Finally I was able to unscrew the nuts and take out the motherboard.
To get out the audio connector from it's hole in the case, I have to flex the motherboard quite a lot, I know it's fiberglass and strong, but it does feel quite scary (the narrowest part of the mainboard is just maybe an inch wide).
I then tilted the motherboard up disconnected the power cable (it's a bit tricky, but I think it's the most efficient way - some say to remove the LCD to do that! that's totally unnecessary), took the motherboard out and unscrewed the heatsink/fan assembly.
The fan would turn by hand or by blowing air into it, but wouldn't keep rotating as soon as I stop blowing. The blades are fortunately removable (just grab them and pull), I cleaned them and the insides with some methyl alcohol, let it dry, then put some TriFlow teflon oil in there and put the blades back on. I then put everything back together, and it worked fine. Assembly, as usual, is the reverse of disassembly. The fan works, and is pretty quiet again (I'd say about the same as it was new).
The fan is sleeve bearing. I think it's not a good practice to put sleeve bearing fans into laptops. When a ball bearing fan fails, it just rotates at reduced speed, with plenty of noise and vibration. Giving a lot of warning time that it should be replaced. A sleeve bearing fan can just stop turning completely, not making any noise to indicate failure. It's very fortunate that CPUs (and some other hardware) have automatic overheat protection (thermal throttling). I suppose Lenovo just had some temporary problem sourcing the necessary qty of ball bearing fans when they were producing X220, so they just put in an alternative they could find. I don't think they did this just to save $1 per laptop. In any case, my advices for X220 owners is, if your fan has become noisier than before, open it up and clean/oil it, better now than later. I would only advise this job to people who have straight hands growing from the right place, not from their ass (that's a saying we have in Russia). There is nothing really difficult about this job (first time will take 2-3 hours, with experience you can do the whole job in under 1 hour), but you have to be careful. There are a lot of small parts that can be dropped or damaged by static electricity. There are many screws of different sizes that can be mixed up (my advise is to use a small container with multiple compartments, and put the screws into different compartments, along with a piece of paper saying where does this group of screws go. Have to be very careful disconnecting the connectors, especially the flat ribbon type. No sharp or metal tools should be used for this task! Use only fingernails or something plastic. Also use care to properly align the flat ribbon cables when connecting (locking) them. It's good to take pictures of the whole process, especially things like cable routing. You'll thank yourself for this when putting it back together. The hardware maintenance manual is also pretty useful (might be not so easy to find the right info, though, have to read carefully). Print it or use another computer or a mobile device to access it when doing the job. As noted, you will need a 5mm thin-wall socket (any good quality 1/4" DR socket will be thin wall, while cheap nasty stuff will be thick wall) to unscrew the VGA connector. The nuts are not tight from the factory (at least mine were not), so you might be able to use another tool, but I think even the smallest needle-nose pliers won't fit there, there's really too little room between the nuts and the case. A sturdy tweezers with round ends (or cut off ends) might do the job, but I'm a believer in using a proper tool for a job, at least when talking about a $1000 computer (this is not very Russian of me, where a common tool for automotive repair is often a hammer and a block of wood; a saying goes: if you fail - use a bigger hammer). Obviously you also need a small-size electronics screwdriver.
A thing I had a problem with: the heatsink contacts both CPU and the chipset (which is common in notebooks), there was thermal compound on the CPU and a thermal pad on the chipset (I would say 0.5mm thick). Unfortunately I tore up the pad when removing the heatsink. If you're careful, usually you can reuse the pad. The pad is there for the reason that the CPU and the chipset surfaces are not on the same plane, so if assembled with just a super-thin layer of thermal compound (like you're supposed to for optimal heat conduction), the chipset wouldn't touch the heatsink and would overheat. Since I didn't have a spare thermal pad on hand, I used a thick layer of thermal compound (I used Arctic Silver 5, which is pretty thick consistency and not very likely to flow out of there) on the chipset. I also ordered some thermal pads on eBay, to have it just in case.
I haven't noticed any significant decrease in temperatures with the new thermal compound, even after 200 engine hours the AS5 needs for optimal performance. It might be cooler by a couple of degrees, but not by much.

A .5mm layer of thermal paste will not do a very good job of heat conduction. There will be air bubbles. No matter how well you spread out the thermal paste on the CPU die, you will never get the kind of even, thin layer that you get with a new fan, which comes with lots of little dots. BTW, very small needle-nosed pliers work fine to start the VGA nuts. The first time I take a particular model apart, I tape the screws near the place the will go back using "painter's masking tape", which leaves no adhesive residue.

    Aloha all, my G5 started making a strange sound, sorta like whirrr, whirr, whirr, over and over non stop. Not loud, but definitely noticeable. I checked my logs and it shows "fan failure". My question is how do find out which fan has failed? Mahalo for any assistance. JB

  • HP 6340F CPU random Fan failure warning and shutdown at startups. :-(

    Get CPU FAN Failure warning and shut-down at random startups. it has been thoroughly cleaned as have been the fins. Will boot up afer 2-3 restarts and runs OK rest of day. There are no obstructions or interferences and fan appears to be visually performing at a good speed.
    This PC is a critical-need unit as used as a main access for polio-disabled operator (me) and the many free web pages I do for non-profits, churches/etc. as well as medical research. I realze that story is, perhaps, non-essential information, but need the help that I can no longer provide for others or myself. Also the essential unit for my Ham Radio operations (w4nov.com) ;-)

  • Need to get back to OSx 10.7 after complete HD failure

    I've had a complete HD failure on my first generation Intel mac pro.  (I mean couldn't it have waited the extra couple of weeks I needed to order the new mac pro?)
    My best guess to do this (which has hit a snag) would be the following:
    1) Use my Snow Leopard install disk (most recent OS that I have physical install media) and get snow leopard installed on the new drive (done and it works--using that install now to write this).
    2) log in to the apple app store, go to the "purchased items" select osx lion and hit the download/install button. (this failed)
         -- lion shows up in the purchased items, but the app says that it is not available for download.
    so what to I do to get back to a working 10.7?
    All the documentation points to a recovery partition, but that is useless in my case as the HD has failed completely (no partitions are accessable).

    Disk drives fail. Always have a spare, and always have a working clone backup or more of your system - and of all your data drives too just to be safe.
    If you replace your system drive every 2 years or so then use the old drive as new backup you'll be protected and have a safety net. No need to shell out and buy a new computer - you can but I would wait 3-6 months for Mavericks and for some kicking the tires on anything new.

  • Dv7 6014 fan failure message

    Is there documentation on opening a dv7-6014 to replace the cooling fan please? We got the 'detected cooling fan failure - 90? - shutting down in 15secs' during a windows update. Its running now with an external fan on the vent.
    Also have a dv7-5003, which has run hot, and  noisy fan all its life - temp now is under 20C ambient, and the left side of the body is almost too hot to keep a hand on it. The 6014 has vents at the rear left, but the 5003 does not...??? Documentation on opening this model please?

  • Prime Infrastructure 2.1 - Fan-Failure SNMP-Trap Issue

    Hello,
    I am facing the following Prime Infrastructure (v2.1) issue:
    - A Fan-Failure SNMP-Trap from a Cisco 3650 switch doesn't appear on Prime, but a Link-Failure from the same switch does.
    - The both events appears on Prime with Syslog.
    - The command "snmp-server enable traps envmon fan shutdown supply temperature status" is set up.
    - The switch is in "Managed" state in PI, I have checked the ACL at the "snmp-server community" command, it is okay.
    - I have set up an SNMP-Trace for the switch on PI, but only "SNMP Null was returned for class com.cisco.server.managedobjects.bridge.Fan3KStats attribute fanIndex" arrived. Please find the log below.

    I have the very same problem.
    The switch has a power supply error (one of the two is down). There is the syslog message in PI about it, but no event has created, so nor alarm is there as well.
    When I check the status of the switch in the Device Work Center, and choose the Environment in Device Details I can see that PI has not realized the power supply error.
    However when I click on the Sync for this very device the power supply status is updated, but still no event or alarm.
    This is the case with the FANs as well.

  • "Fan Failure" and strange revving noise

    Hi everyone,
    *I'm noticing some troubling stuff from my Dual 1.8 PowerPC G5:*
    -Console is reporting "Fan Failure" literally every second.
    -Persistent high/low revving noise (recording: http://mg.freeshell.org/g5sound.mp3).
    -iStat Pro reporting 76rpm slot and 51rpm backside (temp range of 29-37 degrees celsius under load).
    *So far, this is what I've done:*
    -Tested with Apple Hardware Test and Tech Tool Pro. Both found no errors.
    -Checked that all fans appear to be spinning.
    -Insured red light on logic board isn't lit.
    -Tried to pinpoint the source of noise. Hard to say, but sounds loudest by the dual processors.
    -Reset the PMU.
    -Reset the PRAM.
    -Reset the NVRAM (via open firmware).
    -Reinstalled OS X Leopard via erase/install; installed all updates.
    *More background info:*
    A week before the "Fan Failure," I noticed a BIG drop in speed/performance. I installed more RAM by temporarily moving the front inlet fan and I also cleaned the inside of the machine with compressed air. After this, I noticed the machine lacked the normal revving sound on startup. I reseated the front inlet fan and startup sounded okay, but then the G5 proceeded to freak as described. I removed the new RAM, but problems still persist.
    *Any ideas? Please advise.*

    The only thing I can think of is not a failing fan, but a failing logic board sending the wrong values to the fans (iStat reports the instructions passed on to the fans, the fans do not report back the actual speed).
    Although the temperatures seem normal, 76 and 51 rpm for the mentioned fans is far to slow. The slot intake fan of my late 2005 G5 turns at 1500 rpm and the backside fan at 1000 rpm all the time.
    Did you check the new RAM in the system profiler, because that also could be the cause of many problems.
    I'm sorry I can't provide you with a definite solution.

    Hi! We're getting Fan Failure errors popping up on one of my 15454s, and I'm wondering if the fan try is hot swappable? I haven't been able to find any documentation that says yea or nay, and I need to schedule downtime ASAP if it's not. Thanks!

  • Spurious router fan failures?

    Hi gang.
    C3745-ENTSERVICESK9-M version 12.4(10b). ROM version 12.2(8r)T2
    This router appears to be generating spurious fan failure alarms. The fan assembly has been changed for a new one, the engineer checked and was satisfied that in a physical functional sense the replacement fan assembly was definitely working, but we now have all 4 fans showing as failed. We are being told that the replacement unit is believed to be part of a batch of faulty fan assemblies and that it was a known Cisco issue. ... Has anybody got any more information on this? *Is* it a known Cisco issue??

    indipendetly from what the cause is, if you upgrade to a current model like an ISR G2 on which you can have a smartnet contract on it, to get guaranteed support, and peace of mind.

  • E4000 Key switch fan failure

    I have an E4000 that listed several failures in prtdiag associated with a failed PPS. The PPS in question was not working at all and I have not replaced it. Prtdiag is still listing Key switch fan failure and prom detected failure.
    Any suggestion on what might be the cause?

    2970 fans are NOISY.  So power it up and look for the one that's not spinning or is the most quiet one.

  • 3rd Part Menory Causes Fan Failure

    Bought my MBP about 9 months ago and shortly thereafter installed a 1G Ram Module from OWC. 2 Weeks ago my Right hand side fan statred making an awfull racket and then dies. Contacted Apple who had me send it to them. Received my computer last nite. Now remember the only thing wrong with this MBP was the fan. The Hardware Test (Short/Long) run from Disk 1 showed only a Fan Problem. No Memory, Mother Board, Etc. I received the computer back with the Main Logic Board Replaced, Disk Drive Slicked, Memory in a plastic Bag. And the MBP is unusable as received from Apple. Screen goes black, locks up, etc. Tried Reinstalling OSX and it would not complete. I sent about 5 hours on the phone with Apple Tech Support on receiving my MBP back in worse condition than it was sent in for. After going around and around with Apple I got a good tech who said it was a definit hardware issue (Others wanted to first buy Apple-Care for 359 or a 49 version) but since its still falls within one year and also 90 day warrenty if Apple Screwed it up I refused. Finally it will be sent back in to "HOPEFULLY" be fixed this time! Anyways, enogh venting and back to the original question; "Will A Ram Module Cause A Failure To A Fan?" Just one fan by the way the left one worked but upon return they said they replaced both. Thanks for allowing me to vent!! Hopefully this is a fluke on Apple Support since I really miss my Laptop right now!!

    Thanks for the response. Yes I am or was using SMC Fan Control along with iStat in the Dash for moniotring. I work with a lot of PC's and have built my own from MB and Up. Since I am fairly new to Mac but in all my years I have never heard of Memory causing a failure of a Fan. I could as you said believe Kernel Panics or Programs screwing up or reboots for that matter. My assumption is that they did not like the OWC Memory or the addition of Non-Apple Memory. I also find it hard to believe my Main Logic Board all of a sudden (In the Apple Techs Hands) went bad. I can understand maybe the drive being slicked and fans switched in-pairs. But the rest I find really off the wall. I just hope that they can correct the problems right this time since I have been hyping my MBP since I got it and now this is a real show-stopper for me!

  • !! Projects VANISHED. Complete iMovie failure. Genius Bar at a loss. HELP!!

    I bought a brand new iMac 2.4 Ghz two weeks ago, SPECIFICALLY so I could "upgrade" to imovie 08 and cut movies of my son. iMovie worked FLAWLESSLY for the first 10 days, no problems whatsoever. I created several projects, using video clips from my iPhoto (these thumbnails all loaded seemlessly from the start. I use a Canon Powershot SD900 and the video clips are amazing in resolution, 5 times better than any camcorder video, hence I was ONLY working from iPhoto video clips from my digital still camera (I have a lot of them - 45 Gs in my iPhoto). Anyway, opened iMovie an hour after working in it previously, and 'POOF' nearly all of my projects were gone. In addition, everything was completely grayed out, clips wouldn't load, iMovie frozen. Called Apple care and tried clearing my chache, etc. No luck. Took it to the Benius Bar and (long story short, after 2 days in genius bar) they transfered all my user files onto ANOTHER brand new iMAC and now I have two (out of 9) projects 'recovered' but iMovie freezes and acts like its on drugs. Can't edit. Can't open a new project. Total Movie failure. Useless. The Genius bar is at a loss. Says the total iMovie failure may be because I have a single piece of data (a video clip, a photo, even a song) that is corrupted. What the @#$%? Somebody PLEASE help!

    Sorry to learn that you have not been able to find a solution.
    I knew which clip was corrupted because it was the only one that would not permit any editing. Fortunately, it was that easy.
    If you had just one iMovie that you were working on, and you could open new projects, you could copy/paste half of the movie to a new project and see which half plays well. Then with the problem half, copy/paste another half to a new project and see if you can keep repeating the process until you isolate the corrupted clip. It is tedious, but works. However, you said you could not even open a new project in iMovie, so I don't think this solution will be helpful in your situation.
    You will probably need a radical approach and will just have to start over. It will be a lot of work to redo several projects, but well worth the time if it works. Look at how much time you have spent trying to recover/fix/figure out what is going on. Plus, you have all your video clips, and the second construction usually goes faster because you remember how you had it the first time.
    So, unless the Genius bar guys have a better solution, I would trash all your Movie projects and files, reinstall iMovie, and start over with the creation of your iMovies. Be sure to repair permissions before and after reinstallation. You should then have a pristine iMovie app, so you should be able to open it without problems.
    If all is ok so far, reimport the video clips, but do just one at a time. That way, you will see which, if any, one of them is a problem clip. You may never find out exactly what went wrong, and if you don't completely start over, you may run into this problem again and again.

  • SQL Server Express 2014 Installation Completes with Failures and Repair Does Nothing to Help

    I am attempting to install SQL Server Express 2014 on a development machine and as usual old versions of SQL and the remnants of them are a plague to the installation.
    I have used to Revo Uninstaller to scrub the old installations and with my first attempt after some additional work on the registry I was able to get an instance to install and remarkably I was able to connect to the instance. However, I removed an application
    reference to SQL Server 2008 after the SQL Express 2014 installation (through Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features) and it stopped working immediately.
    So I removed (uninstalled using Revo Uninstaller) every reference to any SQL Server application as well as removed all of the registry references (using Revo) and I can now install SQL Server Express 2014 with 
    "Feature" failures [Reporting Services, Database Engine Services, Full-Text and Semantic Extractions for Search and SQL
    Server Replication]  and of course it doesn't work.
    Now when I attempt "Repair" the installation the process ends normally (no errors) and reports  "Success" however SQL still has no instance and the services are not running nor are they visible when I open the "SQL Server Configuration
    Manager".

    Hello,
    To my knowledge, Revo is not a supported way to uninstall SQL Server.
    Please try to uninstall all you can using Control Panel -> Programs and Features, then perform a manual uninstall to
    remove remnants. Try the following procedure:
    1. Uninstall all SQL Server 2012 components you can using Control Panel -> Programs and Features
    2. Backup the registry.
    3. Delete the following keys in regedit:
    --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server
    --HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer
    4. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall and delete all the sub-keys referencing
    SQL Server.
    5. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services and delete all the keys referencing SQL Server.
    6. Rename all the SQL Server folders in the computer like C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server and subfolders.
    After performing above procedure, try to reinstall SQL Server again.

    How long did you have the iPad connected to the wall charger?  A completely dead iPad battery may not work until it has been charged for some time - maybe a half hour or more.  I suggest leaving it on charge overnight, and then trying the reset.
    The MacBook may be able to charge the iPad if it doesn't go to sleep, but it will be extremely slow.  the Wall charger is definitely the best way.
