X99S SLI Plus losing drive connectivity

My new X99S SLI Plus is losing connectivity to drives in SATA ports 5 & 6 (the two Sata Express ports).  They are ADATA SSDs.  The Intel RAID controller is in RAID mode, and I was trying to get 4 of these drives on ports 3-6 into a RAID5 array.
At first, the controller wouldn't even see the last two drives.  I've flashed to latest BIOS and latest Intel drivers and now it sees the drives, but the array constantly goes into rebuild.
Any suggestions?
Thx!

Hello,
Did you try to change other cable to test? What does BIOS show under Settings--System Status, you see 2 of your SSD or all of them can be detected?

Is there a tutorial for the basic BIOS set up for this mobo?  I want to just set the computer to boot up tfrom my ssd.  Is there anything else I have to do in BIOS  before I load Windows 8.1?  I don't want to get into overclocking, just the basics.  Should I try to connect the computer to the internet right after I change the boot drive priority in BIOS? I'm thinking automatic updates to the BIOS via The Web.

If you don't need UEFI win8.1, then no need to change BIOS settings.

If you mean using Live Update to flash your bios, be sure you updated to the latest Live Update version, and before flash the bios, be sure the bios does for your motherboard

  • MSI X99 SLI Plus won't power up

Hi, here is what I got:
    Motherboard: MSI X99 SLI Plus
    Processor: Intel Core i7-5820K
    Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 series 64GB (8 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2800
    Power Supply: CORSAIR RM Series RM1000 1000W ATX12V v2.31
    GPU: ZOTAC ZT-90101-10P GeForce GTX 970 4GB 256-Bit DDR5
    The symptom detail is this:
1.If I power on (either through power button on case or MB) for the first time, only the fan that connected to PSU directly will spin for half of second. And then it stop and system is total slient.
2.After that if no matter how many time I push the power button nothing happen.
3.If I clear the CMOS and try power up, then step 1 happen.
4.The only thing that lit-up in MB is the built-in power button
Here is what my system look like
So far I have try to switch out different GPU and switch around the RAM stick but still does nothing. Any suggest will be very helpful tome. Thank you.

Take it all out the case and inspect the board for any visual defects.
Place it on non-conductive surface (wood, cardboard, NOT antistatic bags) and test with one stick of RAM (try different odd numbered slots) and VGA card. Make sure all power connecters are well connected.
Next step, test with another PSU if you have one.
Check CPU socket for bent pins, either with magnifying glass or you can take clear macro photos with good light and inspect them.
Best not to install anything in the case until you made sure it's working, at least the main pats (CPU RAM VGA) and main hard drive, it's nearly no overhead and saves a lot of time when turns out bad.

  • MSI X99S SLI Plus & Samsung XP941 SSD

    Hello All,
I have just put a system together using the MSI X99S SLI Plus board and a Samsung XP941 M2. SSD.
The base build is done and I have tested it for stability and all is ok (Windows installed onto the M2. SSD in PCIe mode).
I have connected drives to SATA ports 2-6 (intentionally left 1 out for now, another SSD later); the system boots with no issues from the M2.SSD.
I experience issues when I connect drives to the SATA ports 7 and 8. When drives are connected to these ports, the system does not correctly detect the M2.SSD. Note, ports 5&6 have been left disconnected as per the manual.
During bootup in this configuration the system will report that the M2.SSD is:
    ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
(yes y with the two dots above).
In short, it does not detect it correctly, if the system is left to boot it just shows a blinking cursor in the top left of the screen.
The only way I have been able to get around this issue has been to set the sSATA (ports 7-10) to IDE mode, this then allows the system to detect the SSD and all appears to work. I don't want to use the sSATA controller in IDE mode and would like to get it working in AHCI mode.
Has anyone else experienced this or have any recommendations on what I could try? I have attempted other configurations to get this working to no avail.
    Thanks for any help!

I RMA the my MSI SLI PLUS X99S for the second time. Explained about the quad channel is not working even  the bank 5 , 6 , 7 and 8 are not working with a single memory stick. Iam done with it they have tested in 1,2,3,4  but thats dual channel. the have not tested it on bank  5.6.7 and 8. Can someone here from MSI contact Alternate.nl Netherlands (holland) from the reseller to return this Board. I payd for the Quad channel feature and not dual channel . • MSI X99S SLI Plus: Ethernet network disconnecting

I have an MSI X99S SLI Plus motherboard, and it works great except that my wired ethernet connection using the built in Intel adapter randomly disconnects.  This is on Windows 8.1 x64.
I have downloaded the latest drivers from Intel for the I218-V adapter (which are newer than those on the MSI site), have tried four different ethernet cables, and have disabled all power saving options in the adapter properties.  None of this works.  I'm about to give up and either RMA the motherboard or buy a PCIe ethernet adapter, but I'd love to see if anyone has advice.
Here's the disconnect events in the event viewer:
    Here's my driver version:
    Thanks for your help!

Yep, I tried rolling back the driver, as well as lots of other things:
    * Updating router firmware
    * Changing from auto negotiation to full duplex 1 Gig
    * Changing from auto mode to slave mode
    * Trying yet another ethernet cable
    * Lots of other suggestions from other forums...
Nothing worked.  I am going to RMA the motherboard.

  • Overclocking X99S SLI PLUS with XP941

Hello everyone. I'm trying to overclock my CPU and RAM.
My setup is as follow :
X99S SLI PLUS (latest bios 1.6)
    5820K
    Gskill F4-3000C15Q-16GRR
    Samsung XP941 as boot drive
As long as I don't touch the BCLK everything's fine. I can achieve without effort 4.2 Ghz on the core and 3.7 Ghz on the ring.
But Then, my DDR4 is stuck at 2666 Mhz.
As soon as I try to level up the BCLK (even by 1Mhz), the board boots and CPU and RAM are OK but the XP941 isn't seen by the board anymore. It's very strange ! I don't get the link between the 2 : why is the BCLK affecting the PCIe or Sata system ?
So, in these conditions, I cannot achieve the 3000 Mhz possible on my RAM (which would require a 125 Mhz BCLK). It's kinda disappointing.
Is any of you experimenting the same phenomenon ? How can you explain ? Is there a solution ?

OK. So I tried again and took some snapshots.
First, I found a bug with this new 1.6 version of the Bios. Hope it won't crash ... My HDD are not recognized anymore !!
Then I tried to play with the settings. You will see below what the bios gives me as possibilities. Wether I enable or not the XMP profile or select the 200 Mhz or 266 Mhz reference clock, I cannot set the memory to 3000 Mhz !
    So to summarize :
I cannot raise the BCLK of the CPU or my M.2 SSD is not recognized anymore and my OS won't load
I cannot set my memory setting to 3000 Mhz whatever setting I'm trying
I found a bug in the new bios version in the list of Harddrives connected to the board
Not a happy week so far ...

DDR4 options with 266 ref clock (same with XMP enabled) :

  • 4-pin CPU-PWR connector on x99s SLI Plus

I'm attempting to install a Kraken x-61 cooler into my Corsair 780T case and the MSI X99S SLI Plus mobo.  One step says:
Connect the 3-pin power cable from the pump to the 4-pin CPU-PWR connector on the motherboard.
In the MSI x99S SLI Plus mobo and the manual (En-6) I can't find anything called CPU-PWR.  The 3-pin power cable fits into the 4-pin CPUFAN1 connector, but I don't know if that's the correct connection.  Could someone tell me where the CPU-PWR connector is on the MSI X99S SLI Plus motherboard?

it can be confusing to start with but you get used to it once you have done it a few times!
so yes connect it to the fan header for CPU as that line has a sense pin that will detect if your pump fails and will shut the computer off to prevent the CPU overheating to stop it breaking the processor! just take your time and anything your not sure of feel free to ask us!

  • Build question about the MOBO msi x99s sli Plus

I just started to build a new computer for the first time.  I have two questions (at this point, anyway) which I hope someone can answer.
    1.  When I attached the mobo to my new case (Corsair 760T) with the screws that came with the case, I noticed the middle riser is not like the other preinstalled risers.  It's more like a centering post.  I watched tutorials that said as much, but what I'd like to know is: Does that center post just stay as is?  Because unlike the other 8 risers, there's nothing for a screw to go into for the center post.  The mobo seems to be positioned correctly, but I'd like to know if that center post just stays as is.
    2.  My other question has to do with installing my new Kraken X-61  cooler over the cpu.  In several tutorials I've watched, it was stated to remove the back plate on the mobo behind the cpu and replace it with the plastic backplate that comes with the Kraken X61. cooler.  But when I look at the backplate behind the cpu on the MSI X99S SLI Plus mobo, there isn't any bolts to remove.  I also  noticed that the plastic backplate that came with the Kraken X-61 when adjusted to its widest dimensions, lines up with the socket on the top side of the MOBO where the Kraken X-61 heatsink gets connected with thumb screws iinto the socket on the MOBO.  Can I use the socket that's already on the MOBO?  If no, how do I take off the back plate on the bottom of the MOBO?
Hopefully you will understand what I am asking.

Thanks for responding.  I used the wrong term for the backplate in one sentence, calling it a bracket.  I meant plastic backplate.  But no matter, I got it installed.  You gave me a lot of relief, because there is no step-by-step directions with parts from four different manufacturers, so for a first-time builder with practically no technical know-how, it's not easy to know what to do.  Once done, I realized how simple it was, though.  The bracket on the Kraken x61 was already set and attached to the pump.  I just slipped it over the posts I installed for my socket type, and affixed it with the thumb screws.
    Thanks again

  • MSI X99S SLI PLUS boot error A2

I upgraded my PC two weeks ago with the  MSI X99S SLI PLUS, an i7 5820, an M.2 SATA SSD and 16Gb of DDR4
I have no problem booting up with the second BIOS (B) but booting into the primary BIOS (A) goes as follows:
Codes 99, 0C, B4, 9c and A2 appear in sequence at which point it freezes
I reset and it goes through the above but gets to the MSI screen where again it freezes (pressing DEL or F11 on the menu screen has no effect)
Reset again and it gets to the Windows screen and freezes before the animated logo starts.
'A' BIOS is updated to 1.2 and uses the Overclockers UK 3.8 overclock profile
'B' BIOS is at stock (1.0 and 3.3GHz)
I did get BIOS A to work for 2 days but after shutting down the PC it failed to boot the next time I switched it on (nothing had been changed either software or hardware).
I understand that A2 indicates a SATA error but I don't understand why BIOS 'B' works OK if that is the case. Surely a hardware error would cause both BIOS to fail.
I haven't yet tried clearing the CMOS as presumably that would delete the Overclockers UK overclock profile. But should that be my next step?
I should mention that under 'Devices and Printers' there is an error indicated at 'PCI bus 0, device 17, function 0' - 'The drivers for this unidentified device are not installed. (Code 28)' Running the Update failed to find a driver for this device (whatever it might be)
The only PCI device that I have attached is the GPU (GTX680OC) which has the latest driver installed.

Regarding Profile that OC has made for you: I believe BIOS is same/similar to Z87/Z97 and you can save profile to USB. But in addition I would just use pen+paper and write down all the OC info they have change (i.e. voltages, RAM timings etc) to be able to revert this if you would clear CMOS.
Also if you could specify more accurately what speeds are RAM currently at, and what is their "stock" speeds sold as (e.g "I have 4x4 Corsair 1600MHz but I run them @1866MHz).
What is the GPU make? MSI/ASUS/EVGA? I suggest you contact this brand regarding possible vBIOS update.
Try using BIOS A while having only Keyboard and Mouse attached. So other USB devices disconnected.
You can safely clear CMOS of B since there's no profile on it right? >>Clear CMOS Guide<<
Also I would contact OC'ers since it's their responsibility to make sure OC profile is stable and safe. Apparently they are meant to test the system for stability. And ask if in case you lose your OC profile, if they will be able to provide info (or BIOS saved file) so you can get it back.
Is this whole system made by them, or you have added something (e.g. SSD or M2 drive) ?

If i tried to put a mouse or keyboard on any of the usb 3.0. Not function. And the ethernet in windows, tell me that could not work properly...dont take the driver.
If i put an pcie ethernet works fine. But de integrated not.
I update de bios but the problem its still there...
I dont now how i fixed...
    Any suggestions.
    Thanks a lot.

    Hi
Try to install drivers located on this website:
    http://uk.msi.com/support/mb/X99S-SLI-PLUS.html#down-driver
Make sure to pick correct operating system.
Which exactly USB port do not work?
Also, does device manager show any errors? Like here:
Within device manager you can try to run "Scan for hardware changes" (or something like this) and see if that helps.

  • MSI X99S SLI PLUS and XP941 - Booting, but very erratic behavior

I finally got my XP941 to boot in my X99S SLI PLUS using the beta BIOS. I Still can't see it listed as a drive in the system settings, but Windows 8 install sees it just fine, and I can see the "Windows Boot Manager" option available to boot from. Windows is booting just fine now, however it will  freeze up for about 3 seconds about every 10 seconds. I used CrystalDiskMark and found that speeds were over 1000MB as expected for sequential reads, but 4KQD32 reads were absolutely abysmal. I can't remember the exact number, but it was around .012 I've seen other reviews of the XP941 showing much higher speeds than this. I think the slow random read performance is causing the machine to lockup and have erratic behavior.
Does anybody have any ideas? or can anyone confirm that their SLI Plus is running this m.2 ssd just fine?
Another note is that I am only using 1 4GB Single Dimm of memory until my real memory kit arrives. Would running just a single dimm cause this?

Hello cbutters, I have the same configuration and I cannot manage to have the XP941 working (MZHPU256HCGL-00000).
The win8.1 setup does see it but after copying the files and rebooting it won't start.
What bios version do you use ? Can you indicate the specific settings you modified in the bios to have it working ?
    thanks
Using BIOS 136 from here: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=183560.0
Using default BIOS settings to start from, then enabling windows 8/8.1 features and changing it to M.2 PCIe. I didn't touch the SATA Config after loading defaults. (I don't have any memory remapping settings available to me either).
Keep in mind that the device won't show up as a sata device, so don't even bother looking for it. You just have to start installing windows and trust that it will show up....  make sure after initially installing windows 8.1 and first reboot that your first boot option is "Windows Boot Manager". The install was really quick. See my youtube video here:

  • MSI X99 SLI Plus - Blue Screen at Log In

After my $2000 computer died, I rebuilt using a new MSI x99 SLI plus motherboard, 5820k cpu, and ddr4 2600 for $1100.
    It has been 18 days.
I was questioning the motherboard since the beginning since USB devices seemed to go in and out as if they were being plugged in in the middle of working, but I got around most of the problems by not allowing the PC to go into sleep mode.
This morning I wake up and go to check my email and the computer does a wake-up that is different. The bios screen comes up and then I see "resuming windows..." It gets to the log in screen and I enter my credentials. A few seconds later blue screen and reboot.
I try safe mode - log in, blue screen, reboot
I try system restore to a week ago - log in, blue screen, reboot
The store is not going to take any components back, they have a 15 day return policy and it has been 18 days. Nice!
I am not sure whether or not I can really say it is the motherboard. Maybe it is the GPU, who knows?
Anyone know of a way that I can get the details of that blue screen when I cannot even log into safe mode to look?
What kind of troubleshooting would you try?
I am ready to swallow a shotgun.

a roll back may have fixed it but it just depends when it was last updated! - i mean when was the last time that image you where trying to roll back to last updated was it before your problem started?
Everything was working as of 4:00am Central Time Today (11/7/12).
Blue Screens after log in started as of 9:30am Central Time Today.
There has been no windows update between 4:00am and 9:30am today that I am aware of.
The rollback to restore point was to 11/4/14, which would go well beyond any update if one did occur, which it couldn't without my clicking the install updates button manually.
There was no new hardware installed and no new driver updates done between yesterday and today. I played a few games and went to bed :p
    Quote from: badboy2k on 08-November-14, 06:39:33
a blue screen when windows trys to start is usually it running the drive in the wrong mode: enter your BIOS - go to settings - advanced - integrated Perifirals - SATA mode (see if that is in AHCI mode)
I'll double check the BIOS in a bit when I get home from work, but again, I don't see how the BIOS setting would change all by themselves, unless there was a power outage or surge. Neither of those occurred.
I think all signs are pointing to hardware failure. Either the motherboard, GPU, or RAM.
I'll do a memory test and if that doesn't shed light, a reinstall of Windows, if that doesn't fix it, I'm RMAing.

  • MSI X99S SLI PLUS - What a Nightmare!!

    Hi There...
I have purchased the board X99S SLI PLUS.
But since day one, has been a real nightmare to work with it...
    I have a 5820k CPU and 32GB 8x4gb GSkill DDR4 2400mhz black.
I have flashed both bios to 1.20, to try to improve my situation to no avail...
I still have random boot problems, where the boot process stops on the "B4" reference on the lower corner right...
That happens when i do some restart on the OS for exemple...
Some times it hangs there and don´t go anywhere, other times it goes to the bios screen and do the POST.
When it hangs i have to press reset to restart the system and at that time it posts normally.
The other issues, are allready inside the bios....
Sometimes the bios hangs from nothing... like when i want to the Sensor monitors, or when i apply the settings...
Last time i think the bios went corrupt, because when i pressed reset the power light and hdd don´t light anymore and there is no action on the POST...
Have to switch to the Green BIOS, to get the system up again...
This is a very bad bios product, and i don´t really understand why theses products don´t have a better quality control.
Now i have a NON FUNCTION BIOS on the blue side, and a problematic bios on the green side.
Also... There is some memory problems on Windows 8.1, because i have allready have some random BSOD (more when i activate the XMS option).
Also there is some kind of problem with Samsung SSD Rapid Option and this board, because i also get some BSOD refering the Rapid process.
To reference, my system is NOT OVERCLOCKED, the cpu are at default and so is the memories...
    What can be done?
    - To recover the corrupted and failed blue side bios
    - To resolve the hangouts on boot sequence that stops at "B4"
    - To resolve the random lockups inside the bios (THAT corrupts the damm BIOS)
    - To improve reliability of this Board...
So far im not impressed with this product... I was expecting far more from MSI, after i have a good experience with my latest Z77 Gamming board.
I really need help here because i do need my system to work...
    Best Regards,
    Paulo Eduardo

Would you happen to have anything connected to SATA port 5 or 6?
I cant get my motherboard to recognize HDDs in those two ports. 1-4 and 7-8 works fine. Just not 5-6.
Just wanna figure out if my board is defect or if this is a general issue.
