Xbox 360 and nas storage for streaming media

Hi there,
I have an xbox 360 and watch movies on it through my network that are stored on my home PC, this means that I have to have my home PC on whenever I want to watch a movie. What I would like to do is have a NAS storage device that I can store all my movies on that is on the same notwork so that I can then watch the movies on my xbox without the need for the PC being on. Obviously I would want the NAS to be seen by the computer's I have on my network also.
I way thinking about getting this item Western Digital - My Book Live 1TB External Home Network Drive - Black but am not sure if the xbox will see it? or is there a better solution for around the same price which is expandable?
Thanks.

You'd have to get a real home or business NAS product to stream to the 360 and those are not in the same price range as the product you are looking at.

the nat type for xbox 360 and ps3, what is it when you set the router up out of the box? are the nat types open moderate or strict

Hi there. It actually depends if the gaming consoles ports are not blocked by your ISP. Moderate NAT type limits your connection playing online games, Strict does not allow you any connection at all while Open allows you to play with everyone online. Have you had a router before with Open NAT on the gaming consoles? Try to check without the router by going directly to the modem and see if your NAT type is open or strict or moderate. If ever modem is fine and it is the router not working right you can port forward ports on the router. I found these usual ports online, for XBOX live:TCP and UDP ports:  80-88, 3074-3074, 4267-4269. For PS380, 443, 3478, 3479, 3480, 5223, 8080 and UDP: 3478, 3479.

  • Xbox 360 and wrt54gs 7.2 problem

i read the faqs and serached the forums i did not find an answer to what i am looking for i have a xbox 360 and i can not connect it to my computer for media center and it can not connect to xbox live i can use the xbox 360 connect directly to my cable modem and it connects to xbox live just fine so the problem must be the router. will some one please help me!

Connect your computer straight to the modem and download the firmware file for your router from www.linksys.com/download After downloading the firmware connect your modem to the Internet port on the router and connect your computer to port1 on the router...
Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds. Then, unplug the power keep holding down the reset button for another 30 Seconds.Plug the power back in, and keep holding down the reset button for 30 Seconds.Release the reset button.
Open the Internet Explorer and type 192.168.1.1 in the Address Bar and press enter. When it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field empty and provide password as admin all in lower cases and then click on ok. Now click on the 'Administration' tab- Then click on the 'Firmware Upgrade' sub tab- Here click on 'Browse' to select the extracted/uncompressed .img or .bin file and click on "Upgrade"...After doing the firmware upgrade you have to reset this router again for 30 seconds.
Re-configure your router... forward the port nos on to your pc for the assinged ip address & reduce the MTU size to 1365 & you will be able to play the games wired as well as wireless.

  • Xbox 360 and apple airport ip address HELP PLEASE!

hey i just got an xbox 360 and i got the wireless internet adapter than microsoft makes to pick up my wireless internet. I have an ADSL ethernet modem that is plugged into my Airport, which is streaming in my house. So on my xbox i got the test for the wireless connection to work. then the test for the IP address failed. I have looked online to find the IP address, but i dont know which one i need (of the computer? the airport? the modem box?) and the subnet mask, and gateway, and the DNS numbers. can anyone help please? i have mac os X if that helps

i think that's what i mean. sorry im so confusing. i have a mac laptop, which is connected to my wireless network at home, which is an apple airport (you know the little white box that plugs into the electrical outlet) which is also plugged into an ADSL ethernet modem box from US Robotics (which is my cable internet). so then i will be able to find the IP of the airport where? network settings? and last thing, if that is the gateway for the xbox, what is the subnet mask, and the actual ip address of the xbox?
also, if this helps, when i look at Network, under System preferences, Airport is the network, and under TCP/IP it says that the IP Address is 10.0.1.2, the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, and the Router is 10.0.1.1

  • PS3 / Xbox 360 / PC Router Guide For GAMERS

Downloadable for Wordpad or Microsoft Word: http://www.filefactory.com/file/b1e67ga/n/Gaming_Router_Guide.rtf
    Or just read below:
    PS3, XBOX 360, PC GAMING
    Router Guide and Modem Guide
    Introduction:
Having issues trying to get your PS3, or XBOX 360 from Strict, or Moderate NAT? Want to get Type 2, "Open" status? Then follow this guide step for step.
(Please refer to your manual or other posts if you are unsure how to access a certain step, or post a quick reply on the forum. You can usually access your Linksys router via Internet Explorer by typing 192.168.1.1 - password is usually admin, username blank or admin as well.)
All of these steps were performed on the following test setup:
1 - Laptop PC (Windows XP)
    1 - PS3 Console
    1 - Motorola Cable Modem (SB6120)
    1 - Linksys Router (WRT310N V1)
    Firmware Update:
    1)   Download the latest firmware for your router
    2)   Install firmware onto router.
    3)   Wait 1 minute after it has finished
    4)   Unplug your Cable or DSL Modem's power, and ALL other devices that connect to the router. Leave them off.
    5)   Click the "Reset to factory defaults" button in the router."
    6)   Wait 1 minute after the lights stop flashing erratically.
    7)   Physically go to the router, using a pointed object press the "Reset" button and HOLD for 30 seconds, then release.
    8)   Access the router interface (example: 192.168.1.1)
    Quick Tips and Information:
*The following settings are assuming you are now at "Default" settings. If you are not, than some settings may have been overlooked and you may have the wrong settings.
*You MUST use a WIRED connection for these steps. You can even use your PS3 or Xbox 360, and use the browser to access the router if your console is a wired connection. That is what I had to do, because my laptop is wireless only.
*The biggest mistake people make, is not clicking "Save Settings" at the bottom of each page, before moving to the next section. You MUST click "Save Settings" on each little page. Including the sub-pages. This is a huge deal. Even though the settings will "Stay" how you clicked them, they do not actually go into effect unless you hit "Save Settings" on every page.
*At this stage, any unnecessary devices must be turned off. Only the router and one device should be connected through wired Ethernet. Use that device to perform the following steps:
    SETUP > Basic Setup
    9)   Internet Connection Type: Automatic DHCP
    10) MTU: Manual, 1500
    11) DHCP Server: Enabled
    12) Start IP Address: 192.168.1.2
    13) Maximum Number of Users: 2 (set for how many devices you have. 1 laptop, 1 ps3 = 2)
    14) Client Lease Time: 0
    15) Time Zone: Set for your time, and "Check" automatically adjust for daylight savings.
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab.
    16) DDNS and Mac Address Cloning tabs should have "Disabled" option set.
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab.
    WIRELESS > Basic Wireless Settings
    17) Change to "Manual"
    18) Network Mode: Wireless-G Only (My laptop is wireless and has a G-card. Set accordingly)
    19) SSID: set this to something you like: (example Pro Gamer)
    20) Standard Channel: 11
    21) SSID Broadcast: Disabled
    22) Wireless Security and Mac Filter tabs should have "Disabled" option set.
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab.
    WIRELESS > Advanced Wireless Settings
    23) AP Isolation: Disabled
    24) Frame Burst: Enabled
    25) Basic Rate: All
    26) Transmission Rate: 54 Mbps (I am using wireless G. Set accordingly, but do not use auto.)
    27) CTS Protection Mode: Disabled
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab.
    SECURITY > Firewall
    28) SPI Firewall Protection: Disabled
    29) "Uncheck" ALL options: Filter Anonymous Internet Requests, Filter Multicast, Filter Internet NAT Redirection, Filter          IDENT, Proxy, Java, Active X, Cookies.
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab.
    30) VPN Pass-through tab: should have everything "Enabled"
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab.
APPLICATION AND GAMING > All Tabs
    31) Skip this section for now, however if you did NOT reset your router to defaults before beginning. UNDO anything you         already have enabled on each of the five tabs.
    ADMINISTRATION > Management
    32) Router Password: change to something you use
    33) Web Utility Access via Wireless: Disabled
    34) Remote Management: Disabled
    35) UPnP: Disabled. Including the 2 options below it.
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab
    36) On the Diagnostics tab, click "Reboot" (may be located on very first page under “Setup”)
    37) Restart whatever machine you are currently using to do this.
    38) Turn on all devices that will be connecting to the router, except the cable/dsl modem.
    39) Log into the router with your new password. On the first, page you should see "DHCP Reservation" click this. At the top, you should see one device named PS3-something probably numbers. If it is blank but there is an IP address, that is okay too. Click the box to the right side of it. Your other devices should be there too, such as laptops and consoles, etc. Click the box next to each of them. Then Click, "Add Clients" Now you have just assigned a Static IP Address without going through the hassle of doing it manually. Now you will always have the same IP Address for each device.
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab
    40) Go to "Application and Gaming" click on the "DMZ" tab. Change DMZ to "Enabled."
    Source IP Address: "ANY"
    41) Now for the most important part. Most people use destination IP Address. However, if for some reason your IP address of your device changes, well then you are screwed. So instead, click MAC Address, then click "DHCP Client Table" and then "Select" the device that you GAME on, such as PS3 or Xbox360. Click "Close."
*Click “Save Settings” before moving to another tab
***** IF you game on multiple devices, such as a desktop computer, and a ps3. You must DISABLE DMZ, and instead ENABLE UPnP. Please be sure to also enable the 2 options right Below UPnP. Many people do not enable the third, and sometimes even the second option. This causes hosting/joining issues, as the ports do not open/close properly. If you only have 1 gaming device, DMZ is the better choice. However, if you game on more than 1 device, use UPnP.
***** DO NOT ENABLE DMZ & UPnP TOGETHER.
    42) Go to "Administration" > "Diagnostics" > "Reboot"
    43) Restart ALL devices (Except cable/dsl modem) then connect them to the router.
    44) I would connect my laptop now, by using the dell wireless manager I have, use the wizard to find "Non-Broadcasting"       devices. Then I manually type in my SSID: (Pro Gamer) it pops up. Click "Connect,” then "Lock" then "Apply"
    45) For my PS3 I turn it on, go to Network Settings, then Connection Settings, "CUSTOM"
Leave everything Automatic or "Default" except for these:
MTU: 1500 / UPnP: Disabled (If DMZ is enabled on the router) / UPnP: Enabled (If UPnP is enabled on the router)
If your console (ps3/xbox360) was the wireless device, then simply select, "Wireless" and click manual SSID type "Pro Gamer" or whatever your SSID is, then continue with the rest of the settings. Security should be none/disabled.
    ALMOST DONE!
This next tip is almost completely UNKNOWN by the gaming community. However, it is spectacular. Did you know the cable companies increase their speeds over time for FREE? Here is how to get your free upgrade. Even if your speed does not change, this will upgrade your Cable Modem's firmware! (DSL modems must be done manually, check online.)
Use a 7/16 wrench if connections are too tight.
While the Modem is OFF, unscrew the coax cable from the modem. PAY ATTENTION to this step. Now unscrew the other side from the wall or splitter. Then, REVERSE them. Reconnect the coax cable to your modem using the OTHER side (the one that was plugged into the wall), and vice versa. Make sure they are snug, but do not over tighten.
What does this do? Well I do not know the exact inner workings, but my friend who works for Comcast told me about this trick. It forces their system to re-register your Cable Modem. So now, you get a new IP Address, and it forces your modem to check for the latest firmware update. Along with that, come your increased speeds for FREE.
    a)   Now, plug in the power to your modem. Wait until all lights are steady.
    b)   Then go to your computer, (Do not use the PS3 or Xbox for this step)
    c)   Type 192.168.100.1 (might be different for your modem, Google it)
    d)   This is your MODEM's page.
    e)   Look around for an option that says, "Reset to Defaults"
    f)   Click "Reset to Defaults"
    g)   Wait 30 seconds. It will not do anything.
    h)   Now, you must click the other option, "Restart Cable Modem"
It will now clear out the memory, check for new firmware, get an updated IP address, and hopefully give you improved speeds!
That is all. Happy gaming! Visit www.speedtest.net and www.pingtest.net to test your connections.

Hey thanks for this, but one thing I have to ask is about the modem part. I unhook the cables and reversed them and then turned on the modem the lights are on and stable now. I have a sb6121 and when the modem is completely active it goes green, blue, blue, green, which is power, downstream, upstream and then online. But when I did what you said it is green, blue, "green"!, green. So since its different do I wait for the upstream to turn back to blue, or do I have to call comcast and give them the mac address again? I have been waiting for 5 mins so far and don't want to restore defaults and restart till I know I should for sure.

  • Xbox 360 and Linksys E3000

    Hello,
I'm having quite some trouble with the new E3000 and my Xbox 360 Slim Model. I thought that the E3000 had like 4 antennas which should broaden the SSID Broadcast/Wifi Signal. Now when I try to scan for wireless networks on my Xbox360 it can't find the signal the E3000 is broadcasting. The E3000 is on the bottom floor and the 360 is on the first floor. Before this I had a WRT54G Linksys router and that one had no problem getting signal to the Xbox360. The E3000 shouldn't have this problem right, because it has more antennas. Another weird thing is that my laptop, which almost sits next to my 360, has no trouble at all finding the SSID/WiFi broadcast...
Does anyone know how to fix this problem? I just want to connect my E3000 to my Xbox 360.
PS: I have upgraded to the latest firmware.

Xbox 360 and Linksys E3000Bad news guys. Whatever you were told about the xbox 360 being compatible with wireless n at 5GHz was probably misleading. Please work through the following link: Work your way through this:- http://www.unofficialguidetolive.co.uk/faqs/114-troubleshooting-and-improving-wireless
Pay attention to the following, and I quote from the above link:
"...The Internal Wireless N Adapter for the Xbox 360 S 250GB
As well as all of the points above to consider you also need to be aware that some Wireless N routers can work at 2.4GHz and 5GHz or both. <<<<The new internal Wireless N adapter will only work at 2.4Ghz>>>> so ensure you have this enabled. It has also been found that in some cases it does not work with WEP and prefers WPA2-PSK (sometimes called Personal) with AES encryption (not TKIP) so in summary for the internal wireless adapter these configureations seem to work best-"
We could have saved everyone a lot of time if the XBOX 360 support would have just admitted this from the start. NO 5GHZ compatibility from XBOX Wireless N adapter.
If there is a way to upgrade the wireless N adapter in the XBOX please post for the rest of us.

  • Xbox 360 and WRT300N

    Hi,
I have an xbox 360 and a wireless router (WRT300N).  My xbox 360 can connect to the router wirelessly and i get a great signal, but when i try to play online, for example, halo 3 slayer games,  my game turns all glitchy and disorted.  My character gliches through walls and my game freezes when I die.  I have tried with other routers at friend'shouses and the games work perfectly, so i know it is my router (WRT300N) and not my xbox 360. What can I do to fix this?

1st, open up the router user interface. To do this, open up a web browser and on the address bar type the numbers 192.168.1.1 (username just leave it blank, password as a default is admin).
Then go to the Applications and Gaming Subtab. Input the following values:
    Application: XBOX
    Start: 3074
    End: 3074
    Protocol: Both
    IP Address: 192.168.1.5
    - Save Settings
2nd, assign a MANUAL IP Address value to your XBOX:
    IP: 192.168.1.5
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Then save the settings and go ahead , have fun.

  • Using the Airport with an Xbox 360 and such

Hey guys I'm thinking of buying a new Airport Extreme N for my home since my linksys router is being stubborn. I have an xbox 360 and i was wondering if it worked well with it. What i mean is it faster with the Extreme and is it very reliable. Thanks guys for helping me out and have a Merry Christmas. --- Vinny the Pooh

I just got the Airport for Christmas and it only took a couple of minutes to set up with my xbox 360 and all of my computers connected right away. The signal is twice as good as the signal with my linksys router was. Much better for xbox live. Good luck

  • Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage

Can the time capsule be used as both a time machine backup and NAS storage?   I want to use the drive as external, wireless storage for all of my files so all my PCs, MACs and iOS devices can access the files.  Plus, I want to use the drive for backing up my iMac via time machine.  Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?  If not, are the other suggestions on how I can do this?

Can the time capsule device be used for both these purposes simultaneously?
It can, but is really not recommended. Sooner or later there will be a fight for space on the drive between Time Machine and the other files.
If you have plenty of free space on the drive, you can do this......but.....have you thought about how you will back up the "other" files that are stored on the Time Capsule?

  • Xbox 360 and wired connection

I'm trying to connect my Xbox 360 to my Airport Extreme using a wired ethernet connection. However, the Xbox 360 always says "MTU Failed". I've reserved an IP address for my Xbox 360, and tried opening ports 88 and 3074 for UDP and 3074 for TCP as Microsoft suggests, and I even tried using the IP assigned to the Xbox 360 as the NAT host, but it still doesn't work. I also tried connecting my Xbox 360 directly to the modem and it worked perfectly so I know it's not an issue with my ISP. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I tried searching, but it seems everyone's problems are when trying to connect the Xbox wirelessly and disappear when they connect the Xbox 360 directly to the Airport Extreme.
    Thanks in advance.

    Ok, i have it sorted
    MTU setting should be:
Primary DNS server -> your router address (which could be 10.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 etc.. depend on your number, everybody is different, check underneath your router box)
Secondary server: Your ip address, can be found in -> safari: type www.whatsmyip.org (don't give this away!!)
now it should pass all the test.. enjoy guys

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I have tried restoring the network settings and i have restarted router. I am just so disappointed because my ipod is the only one out of all my friends and family that does this(I know about 15 people with ipod touches and one with iphone). My router works fine with my ps3, xbox 360, and laptop. By the way, its not just my router. It does it with any of them. I have had friends that say their ipod has problems with album artwork too. And, if it makes a difference, it started doing this after i got an update via itunes. Also, the restores made it take longer to reconnect to the router so i really think its just my ipod. I guess im just gonna have to deal with it. Maybe version 3.0 will fix it just as 2.1 or so destroyed it.
One thing i just dont understand is why geek squad did what did to my ipod. I told them that it wouldnt stay connected to my router and the guy tested my battery and hard drive. What does this have to do with that? He also told me to restore it. I mean, no offense to geek squad, but my brother could go in there and teach these guys how to do this. He didnt go to college for this stuff either but he built all of our computers and anytime we have a problem, he knows exactly what to do. He also owns his own computer business and helps people fix their computers. The only problem is that he hates apple so he knows nothing about it. Apple is getting so annoying, coming out with newer versions of things every few months and making so much crap that no one needs. I just cant wait until microsoft steps it up and makes a touch screen, internet and email compatible, zune. Sorry, this is just so annoying and disappointing.

  • AirPort Express as a Wireless Adapter For Xbox 360 and to stream PC audio?

Ok, so I am wondering if I can do this config with an AirPort express. I want to connect the AirPort to my existing WiFi, and be able to plug in an Ethernet cable connected to an Xbox 360 to get Xbox Live, as well as stream audio from my PC. Is this possible to do at once? Also, is it possible to stream PC audio, not just iTunes music? Thanks for your time.

    Hello podalex,
Just an FYI for you with regard to the Airport Express:
It is always best to check with the software manufacturer FIRST. They will tell you if they have tested the product and the version, as well as whether or not it will work with Windows 7.
Check out the Windows 7 Compatibility site: (There you will find out about hardware and software compatibility.)
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/compatibility/en-us/default.aspx
There is a pulldown from which you can choose "hardware" and "software".
There are also some great articles, instructional videos and such to help with your Windows 7 at our Springboard site:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/default.aspx
In any event a lot of the times, Vista drivers will work in lieu of Windows 7 drivers, however, it's not 100%!
As stated previously, it's best to have the Windows 7 certified drivers installed.
Microsoft does have an official Windows 7 Support Forum located here http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/category/w7itpro/ . It is supported by product specialists as well as engineers and support teams. You may want to check the threads available there for additional assitance and support.

  • Iphone 4 Video and Xbox 360 as my PC's Windows Media Center

I noticed that all video formats play perfectly over my Xbox 360 except for video shot with my iphone 4. It plays the video in slow motion while the audio is at regular speed. It's very annoying. Is their a fix for this or do I just need to convert the iphone 4 videos to h264 mp4, or regular mp4? Any quick fixes so I don't have to do the converting? When I play them on my HP they play just fine. I'm assuming it has something to do with the Xbox 360 not having an updated codec. Any ideas will be tried.
    Thanks

I'm in the same Xbox 360 boat. I'm also amazed at the lack of information on this problem since the iPhone 4 has been out so long and the Xbox 360 received an update long after.
It has to be a codec issue since the Xbox 360 can play 1080p content. The iPhone 4 720p video can't be more intensive than 1080p.
While I'm at it why can't the Xbox 360 play iTunes Plus and iTunes Lossless audio, they're DRM free (I use Connect360 to get around the issue)? Seriously, Microsoft has to be doing it on purpose. Every attempt I've made to get this question answered has been met with a MS wall.

  • Using Airport Extreme as a wireless adapter for an xbox 360 and/or computer

I have a wifi network that is successfully broadcasting internet, i also have a spare Airport Extreme that i would like to use as a wireless adapter for my xbox 360.
My Existing network is being broadcast from a D-Link modem so it doesn't support "extending a network" with airport extreme
What i want to achieve is:
Wifi Internet being broadcast by d-link, received by Airport Extreme WIRELESSLY, then sent via a WIRE to my xbox 360's ethernet port so that i can access internet on my xbox 360.
    Unfortunately:
My Xbox 360 doesn't have built in wireless
Connecting to the d-link network wirelessly (with the airport extreme) doesn't seem to give me a wired internet connection (from the airport extreme)
I don't want to extend the network wirelessly
    Any help would be appreciated
Thanks in advance to any users who know how to solve my (probably simple) problem

    Welcome to the discussions, DanSwiggsD!
If you have a non-Apple device as your main router, unfortunately the AirPort Extreme has almost no chance of compatibility with your main router.
If you do have an Apple router as your main device, please post back with your model number and we'll let you know how your devices should be configured.
If you don't have an Apple device as your main router you have a few options to connect the xbox:
    1) A pair of ethernet powerline adapters could be used if you did not want to run a regular ethernet cable from your main router to the xbox.
    2) The new AirPort Express 802.11n model does have a feature called Proxy STA which should allow it to receive a wireless signal from any wireless router and allow the ethernet port to be enabled.
