I did add testing and community-testing, sorted out the pacman keysigning thing, and upgraded all packages, including  xf86-video-intel.
I will wait to see if the problem still occurs.
If it does, I will try upgrading to linux 3.1, but I would prefer not to because it causes easy-slow-down-manager and samsung-tools to fail, and I do not have a lot of time to troubleshoot my system at the moment.
I need the AUR packages to control my samsung R719 backlight.
Apparantly there is a new version of samsung-tools out which does not require easy-slow-down-manager, but the AUR package is out of date.

  • [SOLVED] Xorg 1.9 + qt 4.7 + nvidia + xinerama = Xorg segfault

    Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing a perfectly reproducible (even with a completely fresh Arch install) Xorg segfault with a certain constellation.
When using the latest binary nvidia drivers (works with the 260 beta also), dragging the mouse pointer within a qt window (vlc, smplayer, skype, qtconfig) crashes Xorg with a segfault when using a Xinerama configuration. Twinview or single screen works fine however.
    Xinerama configuration (crashing): http://pastebin.com/3VdVZqkU
    Twinview configuration (works): http://pastebin.com/QjL4Nibg
    Xorg log when crashing: http://pastebin.com/qby9uSxN
    Can anyone confirm this?

Just to do some more analysis on this, I tried to compare the sources between the old working xorg-server that Arch packaged (version 1.8.1.902, found at http://www.x.org/releases/individual/xserver/ and the latest 1.9 xorg release that Arch uses (version 1.9.0, found at the same aforementioned URL).
In version 1.8.1.902, the file Xext/panoramiXprocs.c has this version of the critical if-statement that Ochi originally mentioned:
    if((pDst == WindowTable[0]) ||
    (pDst->drawable.id == savedScreenInfo[0].wid))
    rep.dstX += panoramiXdataPtr[0].x;
    rep.dstY += panoramiXdataPtr[0].y;
Anyway, I got the git repo to see which commit decided to change pDst to pWin in that second OR condition.
    git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver
    git log -p Xext/panoramiXprocs.c
And found this commit: 80b5d3a3264d2c5167e5ac85a3b04af0f89cece1 which did the change. You can use
    git show 80b5d3a3264d2c5167e5ac85a3b04af0f89cece1
to see the commit's full diff. That commit was a big commit that changed lots of things in many files. Here is the portion that concerns our discussion (see the very bottom part)):

    commit 80b5d3a3264d2c5167e5ac85a3b04af0f89cece1
    Author: Jamey Sharp <[email protected]>
    Date: Fri May 21 23:13:51 2010 -0700
Move each screen's screensaver data into ScreenRec.
Most references to the savedScreenInfo array already had the
corresponding screen pointer handy, which meant they usually looked like
"savedScreenInfo[pScreen->myNum]". Adding a field to ScreenRec instead
of keeping this information in a parallel array simplifies those
expressions, and eliminates a MAXSCREENS-sized array.
Since dix uses this data, a screen private entry isn't appropriate.

So I will send the developers an email and simply ask him if he meant to change that pDst to pWin in Xext/panoramiX.c, or if it was a copy/paste error (seems like it is). I'll report back here afterwards.

  • Is there going to be a Dev build of Xorg for new Gnome?

According to http://www.gnome.org/%7Edavyd/gnome-2-14/ Gnome 2.14 will be out 15th of March and metacity will have some eyecandy which will require dev version of xorg. But xorg 7.1 will be out sometime in April according to http://wiki.x.org/wiki/ChangesForX11R71
So will we have to wait for xorg 71. before Gnome 2.14 will be released?
    thnx.

Arch will be releasing Gnome 2.14 before 7.1. Also the 'eyecandy' isnt required to run, so thats a non-issue

  • [SOLVED] Xorg & Firefox lock Gnome desktop, causing massive CPU usage

    Hi there,
since I have installed ArchLinux x64 on this laptop (Core 2 Duo, 9600M GT with Nvidia's binary driver 195.36.15-2, Gnome 2.30) Xorg spins out of control every so often - more often repeatedly in an hour, sometimes not for a prolonged time.
This appears to occur (so far only) when Firefox is running (with any site, independent of Flash, but looks as if its main window has to be open) with which it then consumes an entire CPU core, making the mouse pointer and any terminal cursor blink rapidly, as well as windows being selectable, but not e. g. resizable or closable. Any keyboard input to a terminal has to be hammered in repeatedly to be accepted.
It also seems as if it is especially prone to happen if another program (say, gThumb) is ordered to switch to full-screen by F11 with FF's window open in the background, which frequently for whatever reason then also wants to change into full-screen, causing "conflict".
Switching to a console and killing Firefox or starting it via terminal and canceling it there ends each occurrence of the issue. Xorg.0.log does not report any errors.
An upgrade to Xorg 1.8 does not appear to have affected it.
I know this bug (or ones like it) has also occurred to others for years now, but I have so far been unable to find any solutions in reports concerning it.
    Any help, please?
My xorg.conf (many options in "Device" have been inserted as attempts to solve the issue):

edit: I cannot say exactly what apparently ended this issue, however (of the changes I explicitly remember) after the following it does no longer occur:
        1. Had to delete the extensions.* (cache, ini, rdf) files as they became corrupted.
        2. Removed the Fox Splitter (aka Split Browser) extension.

Well yes, I though about this too, but that certainly wouldn't solve the problem (esp. were it to appear with other apps); besides, there are just way too many features (extensions, scripts etc.) that Chrome a) does not have or b) would be a royal pain to properly add.

  • Xorg Segfaults

I reinstalled Arch yesterday on my laptop, and I'm having issues with Xorg. At what appears to be random times, Xorg will segfault. This can happen anywhere from 2 minutes into a session to 30.

  • Xorg Segfaulting on viewing console (ctl+alt+f1) after nvidia upgrade

I upgraded nvidia and nvidia-utils yesterday to the current nvidia-utils 169.09-2 and nvidia-utils 169.09-1 versions respectively.  Pacman complained about the presence of  /usr/lib/libXvMCNVIDIA_dynamic.so.1, so I followed the advice here (http://archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-gen … 16508.html) and did a -Sf installation.  After that the installation and restart (I upgraded the kernel at the same time), went smoothly.
I run icewm, but boot to the console and start X manually.  I tend to drop back into the console (ctl+alt+f1) fairly regularly.  The X-server has now begun to catch Sig 11 and segfault  (unpredictably), when I go to the console.  It has happened three times today - the Xorg log terminates with :
    Backtrace:
    0: /usr/bin/X(xf86SigHandler+0x7e) [0x80baf4e]
    1: [0xb7f0f420]
    Fatal server error:
    Caught signal 11.  Server aborting
    Any ideas please?

I'm posting here the setup of my /usr/lib/xorg/modules so you guys can see if there's a difference from removing the old package on the update or deleting the files by hand.

  • [solved/cannot be solved]Xorg-server and gnome-power-manager

I was wondering if there is hope that someone will put patches to main tree of Xorg-server which are here: http://blogs.gnome.org/hughsie/2009/08/ … of-bodges/
It should remove this weird blanking effect and time gap before screen is backlighted again. I didn't tested it, because it requires rebuild of xorg-server and I don't want to use git version, but guys there says that it's working.

OK, thanks for advice, I'll try building xorg-server with ABS.
I've got another problem with automatic turn off screen - media players don't prevent turning screen off while they are playing film. Is there any possibility to fix it? Only way I've found is to turn off automatic screen backlight off after couple of minutes, but it's not how tigers want this to work

Solved, it was really stupid. For some reason my Multilib repo got disable in the pacman config. So the 32bit nvidia drivers were old...

Yeah, sorry I didn't notice this post sooner, or I could have saved you some trouble shooting.
After testing and discussion on NVIDIA forums with someone else having the same problem, we realized that it is apparently a problem with any Xorg 1.7 release using Xinerama with a monitor positioned Left of another display.
The person I was talking to said he bugged it, and rearranged his monitors right of.  I downgraded to xorg 1.6 and haven't given it too much though since.  I should probably follow up on that and submit a bug to xorg or something...  or you are welcome to!
Works great with Xinerama turned off, which is actually a fine option for me since I don't tend to move windows between displays, except I am using Xinerama to work around an xmonad bug in handling multiple non-Xinerama displays.  I would have never caught it if I hadn't tried turning Xin on to fix the xmonad issue right before the 1.7 upgrade and gotten curious why my setup started going crazy (since I have a monitor with two monitors to the left of it)..
One thing that also works is making your left most monitor screen 0 and setting the other two monitors to be RightOf it, or at least that worked for me.  Unfortunately, my left most monitor is a 46 inch tv that is often turned off or on a different input, so I can't really have it being screen 0.

  • [solved] Xorg 1.8.1 + FGLRX Mouse and keyboard don't work...

Beginning this week i installed Arch linux for the first time (several times infact) and i followed the installtion guide to get gnome working on my machine...
    pacman -Sy
    pacman -S xorg
    pacman -S gnome gnome-system-tools gnome-extra gdm gksu
I also added the "fuse usblp"  and " fam hal" entries to /etc/rc.conf in their respective sections as decribed there.
When i would reboot and type gdm the system would start up and i could configure everything else, but after reinstalling this morning this no longer works because the xorg got upgraded to a new version.
When i type gdm or startx in complains that "vesa" has no modes, so i installed and configure the fglrx drivers from the pacman source.
Now comes the actual problem, when i now type gdm or startx i get the graphical enviroment but my keyboard and mouse do not work and the computer is frozen.
I tried going to a diffirent tty but it won't take those commands either.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be ? i do not understand what is wrong....
The Solution - Because the vesa driver didn't work i installed fglrx and i deleted this folder called /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d as i had never seen it before and figured that  i didn't need it if xorg.conf was present.
Leaving the folder intact solved the problem
it was a noobish mistake from a beginner, sorry folks

After the update, startx fails w/ gnome but not w/ kde. I know that my xf86-video-intel was changed to xf86-video-intel-uxa. next I tried xf86-video-intel-sna (because it is listed on arch's xps15z page) and still no success.
I would really love some help. The actual fail goes something like: wallpaper, mouse, top bar (w/ clock etc) and then the bottom bar, and right when it looks like it will hand over control, I get dropped into gnome error screen letting me know that something went wrong.
    Thank you

Trilby wrote:Are you trying to start X as root?  Why is Xorg looking in /root/.config/ ?
I am. I prefer to run as root.
I have tried running as non root and the result is the same.
Do you think it has to do with /lib changes?

  • How to install kde/gnome desktop in arch linux?

I tried with installing pacman -S xorg-server and xorg-apps then
i have given installation for kde and gnome using  pacman -Sy kde kdm xorg-xinit dbus gnome gnome-extra.
But it is asking me to replace some softwares..
    At the end after downloading
while commit transaction it's showing some errors like
    /lib exists in filesystem
    /usr/bin/tzselect exists in filesystem
    /bin/kill
    /etc/pam.d/chfn exist in filesystem
    /usr/share/man/man1/...
So i tried with Syuf still getting error.
From wiki i have seen installing glibc
    using pacman -U http://pkgbuild.com/~allan/glibc-2.16.0 … pkg.tar.xz
    pacman -Syu --ignore glibc
    pacman -Su
    mkinitcpio -p linux
    pacman -Sd gcc gcc-libs
After some sort of commands i lost my script commands like poweroff, reboot....it's showing /sbin/init not exist...
Then when my computer starts it is not booting...
What all i want to do is getting an UI with dbus and xorg..
    Today i have started archlinux...
    Please help

    Is it a stable one?..
We are planning to switch everything from Ubuntu to ArchlInux
One more question..Is it mandatory to install xorg and dbus before installing any kde or gnome UI?
I have this doubt because when i install xorg-server and xorg-apps.(first pacman installation)..it's showing for pacman update i gave no..then it is saying like replacing some of the packages with another one?
This is a problem with my installation..or will it be fixed if i moved to latest one?
    Thanks in Advance

  • Get gnome&gdm running, in a minimal manner?

hi every one, i'm loving arch but i'm disapointed in myself
after wresteling! with my laptop all night+next morning and facing strange problems, which the last one was about failing allocating g object or something like that, and realizing that each problem was solved installing one of gnone packags, finally i installed everything `pacman -S gnome` and `pacman -S gnome-extra` offered,  gdm works now, but this is totally not arch way, i dont want the package game!!! to name one,
so on a fresh installation of arch, what is the minimum requirments to run Xorg+gdm+gnome3+gnome-shell?
    (minimum!)
    tanx for any answer given

    i get error running gnome-control-center
    *** glibc detected *** gnome-control-center: free(): invalid pointer: 0x00007f5a783c84d8 ***
< AND A LOT OF LINES HERE, Backtrace.....>
    so i do this:   MALLOC_CHECK=1; export MALLOC_CHECK
and i's fixed, but, i cant run 'Date and time setting' it simply wont run!, i dont know what the comand line for running it is, i figured out gnome settings's error by running in terminal
    3 questions:
1.how do you figure out what the error is, will it be loged somewhere?
2.what the command is for running "gnome"s Time setting (not setting directly in terminal)
3.what do you think the problem could be?

  • Gnome 3 crashes on startup [Solved]

    Hello,
I just rebooted my laptop after a few weeks for the first time. I installed
    numerous updates during that time.
When gdm loads it crashes and I get the "We encountered an error" picture
with the sad computer smily. I tired booting into runlevel 3 and used startx but I
ended up with the same problem. Disabeling both Gnome Shell Extersions
    didn't work.
Where exactly is the log for Gnome-Shell and all that so that I can post it here?
I quickly installed basic xfce4 which works fine so the graphics driver which
was updated seems to work ok.
    Regards,

  • Big desktop using gnome

I have successfully installed the ATI driver with big desktop configuration. (on xorg 6.7)
    I'm using gnome as WM.
With my previous gfxcard using xinerama, if I maximized a window, it would maximize on the monitor it is on. The big desktop of ATI (which doesn't allow the xinerama option) streches the window over all monitors. (complete desktop) Same goes for the gnome panels that have the expand property. Also gdm shows the loginbox half on screen 1, half on second screen. Very handy  :?
Is there any way to alter this behaviour so that it acts like the xinerama mode?
I haven't found anything on the internet about this, besides this post with simular question, though it doesn't have a valid answer:
    http://lunar-linux.org/pipermail/xfce4- … 12099.html
I'm using a pretty standard generated config, with
    Option "MonitorLayout"              "AUTO, AUTO"
I can't seem to find out if xorg config or gnome config is responsible.
I'm sure the solution must be trivial as nobody else seem to have this annoying behaviour

I have the same problem when I use the merged mode with my Matrox G550. I don't think you can solve this one: the X11 system is fooled in having a large desktop spread over 2 displays, without noticing there are two screens. That's where xinerama jumps in: it's an extension so apps know on which screen they are and what size that screen has. Without Xinerama, there is no option to control placement or stretching. Maybe the drivers themselves solve something internal, but I wouldn't count on it.

  • [SOLVED] Gnome won't run

I have installed hal, fam, fuse and Xorg, but my GNOME desktop doens't run. The following error message is printed when trying to # gnome-session
    ** (GNOME-session:3532): WARNING **: Cannot open display:
EDIT: Never mind anymore, it worked fine when I ran it when actually using the Xorg . Thanks anyway!

You mean the gnome display manager
Noooooooooob wrote:The main issue is when I'm at the prompt and type in: "exec gnome-session" I get:
    "bash:exec: gnome-session: not found".
You want to just type "gnome-session".. the exec part is only used for the last line of the .xinitrc file. When you type in a binary (like gnome-session, firefox, etc), you simply type in that name.
Sorry, this probably doesn't help with your fundamental questions/problems.
