XP machine can only connect to Airport Express through Configure Other...

I have an Airport Express running the latest firmware (6.3). It works fine with my Mac, however I can't get it to work correctly with my XP machine. It's setup to just do music and not give out IPs. I've tried connecting it to my router via wired and wireless and doesn't work either way. I can connect to it if I go to Configure Other... and type in the IP but I can't see it in the AirPort Utility scan and I can't see it in iTunes.
A possibly related issue is that I can't see my Mac's shared iTunes library on the XP machine but I CAN see the XP machine's library on the Mac.
Everything is on the same 192.168.0.x subnet.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
So am I correct in saying trying to utilise the Airport Express to access the printer over the network was a wasted effort due to the latest iOS? I had read up on the express before purchase and believed that was one of it's main purposes.
    Thanks again for the help.

  • HT1126 Can I connect the Airport Express directly to my wireless router?

The old owner of my house set the Air port for my use, gave me a password ... when I tried it, the password never worked.
DO not want to lose my old wireless system as it allows me to do more than just the Air Port.
    should I reset the system?

can i connect the airport express into an ethernet port in the wall
I assume you are asking about obtaining an Internet connection here.
First, temporarily turn off the wireless on a laptop and connect the laptop to the Ethernet wall jack with an Ethernet cable. Can you log on to the Internet this way?
If yes, then you can connect an AirPort Express to this Ethernet port and configure it to provide a wireless signal for multiple devices.
If no, then you can connect the Express, but you will not have an Internet connection.

  • Devices can only connect to airport exp b4 Macbook

    I hope someone can help:
I have a Macbook and Windows XP machine both successfully connected to my Airport Express Wi-fi network. But I also have a Nokia mobile phone (Symbian OS) and Dell Axim PDA (Windows Mobile) which I would like to connect. These devices can connect to every other network I have tried but can only connect to the Airport Express network if I connect them before the Macbook is connected (they remain connected if I then connect the Macbook too). If I try to connect them after the Macbook has connected, they don't even see the network! The Windows XP machine is unaffected by any of this.
    Any help much appreciated!
    Keith

In case anyone else has this issue, I think I worked it out:
The Airport Express WLAN port was set to "automatic" but changing it to "1" allows the mobile devices to access the network even after the macbook. Dunno what the macbook was up to though....

  • Airport can't connect to Airport Express

I just purchased a used PowerBook G4 (Titanium) 1GHz with an Airport card built in. The card recognizes the Airport Express but whenever I put in my password it says that the "connection failed". I know I am typing in the correct password and the caps lock is not on. It does the same thing when trying to connect to other sources as well (i.e. Panera Bread, etc...). I don't think anything is wrong with the Airport card since it is able to recognize the Express so I have no clue.
Will the Airport Express recognize the regular Airport card? I'm assuming it can since I've read several instances where Airport is mentioned both online and in the manual. Is there a limit to how many computers can wirelessly connect to the Express at one time? I currently have two computers connected wirelessly to the Express right now (an iMac and an iBook).
BTW: I just upgraded to Leopard and the problem was evident before I did this.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

I have the same computer (with building AirPort Card) for the last 4 years, and I use WPA Personal home network with both AirPort Express and AEBS 2003 Version. It should be no problem for you to share the same network with two computers at the same time. I have broadband TV that connects use ethernet cable to my AEBS while I use my PB wirelessly downloading files from online, at the same space an iBook connects to my wireless network browsing online.
I used to encounter strange AirPort login problems just like the one you have. You can read a related post about Automatic Connect? that I have commented about.

I also suggest to reset your Keychain Access preferences and trash caches from your computer, and use Disk Utility to repair permissions. You can use a great utility called Onyx (works well on Leopard) to trash caches and fix some weird problems from your used machine.

    Hope this helps. Good Luck!

  • Can't connect to Airport Express after updating software

I ran Software Update today on my Intel Mini which updated iTunes to 7.3 and apparently included a security patch that I did not take note of. Since then I cannot connect to my Airport Express which is hooked up to my stereo system. The AE works fine when I connect to it from a PC in my home. Any ideas? Thanks!

Thank you for the suggestion Juan. I did a hard reset and reconfigured the AX. I was able to stream music to it from iTunes, but a few minutes later I noticed that my internet connection was stalled, as was my connection to email. So I rebooted the Mini and the internet and email are now working, but once again it won't connect to the Airport Express through iTunes...? It is almost as if it can no longer connect to the internet and stream music simultaneously. I don't know if it matters, but after the hard reset I set up the AX to "join my existing network", which is a Netgear wireless router. I assumed that the Mini's internet connection is thru the Netgear device, and by setting up the AX the way I did it would only be used for the stereo system. Should I have done something different?

  • Can I connect the Airport Express to a TV and watch the screen of my Mac on the TV?

Could I know if I can connect the Airport Express to the TV and watch the screen of my Mac or iPad or iPhone... On the TV?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
That's not possible with an AirPort Express. However, what you can do is to use an Apple TV if you want to mirror your iPhone, iPad and Mac onto the TV, being all of them connected to the AirPort Express. Read > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5209?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

  • Can't connect to Airport Express using Linksys WRE54g?

I am having problem connecting to Airport Express using Linksys WRE54G, under the following circumstances.
    Here's my setup.
I am using Linksys WAG200G modem/wireless router in the studies. My house is fairly big and very weak signal in living room. Hence I added Linksys WRE54G Wireless-G Range Expander in living room.
I have two HiFi. One in studies and the other in living room. macbook and external HDD where I store all my musics sit in studies.
I use Airport Express (AE1) to stream music from macbook to studies HiFi. Works fine.
So I connect AE1 to living room HiFi. Macbook still in studies. The problem is iTunes cannot connect to AE1 now. However I still able to detect AE1, open/change settings using Airport Utility on macbook in the studies.
Now I bring macbook to living room. AE1 works!
What I intend to setup is,
    1. WAG200G, macbook and external HDD in my studies.
    2. AE1 connect to studies HiFi. I am planning to get another Airport Express for living room HiFi.
    3. Control the playlist using iPhone Remote and listen music in living room.
    Question:
    1. Did iTunes connect directly to Airport Express without going thru network router?
    2. How should I setup Airport Express in this case?
Appreciate anyone who can help me on this. Thank you.

    pss.
actually, is it possible to do what i'm trying to do... the guy in the Apple store said that i can connect to the Netgear router for my internet connection, and Airfoil can separately connect to the Airport Express to play music...
the way i've set it up so far, i can do either, but i can't do both... or do i need to somehow connect both wireless stations together...??

  • IMac G5 (Rev. A) can't connect to AirPort Express

We have 2 Macintosh computers at home; one Mac mini G4 1.42GHz (model M9687LL/B) with built in AirPort Extreme card; and one iMac G5 (Rev. A) 1.6 GHz (model M9363LL/A) also with an AirPort Extreme card.
The mini was bought new, while the iMac was used when we bought it. When we bought it, the company (who were selling old Macitosh computers previously rented to other companies) installed and additional 512 MB of RAM (on top of the 256MB already in it) as well as the AirPort Extreme card. We then upgraded the OS from 10.3.9 Panther to 10.4.4 Tiger. Then we used a FireWire cable to copy the harddrive of my dads work computer (iMac G4) to the new one. We then took it home.
At home we had a linksys wireless router (model BEFW11S4) which we used to connect to the internet. Connected to this wireless network was an AirPort Express unit which we used to stream music to the downstairs stereo. However, the linksys router caused many problems, one of them being that everytime we started a computer, the router needed to be restarted to be able to send a signal so we could connect to the internet.
Eventually, we got feed up with this, and took the AirPort Express unit upstairs and replaced the linksys with it. We installed it, and it worked fine. Upstairs (location of Mac mini, the signal strength was always 4 or 3 (the little icon in the menu bar), but downstairs (where the iMac's located), the signal stayed at about 3, or sometimes 2.
After about a week, the downstairs signaled started to be more 2 than 3, but this made no real difference to us, since it still worked. Then, yesterday, it went down to 1, but still worked. Then, today, it stayed at 1, then totally disconnected. When we click the symbol in the menu bar, we can press on the wireless network to tell the computer to connect to it, but it only comes up with a box saying that the computer could not connect to it.
We have tried more or less everything to get it to work. Turning on and off the AirPort Extreme card in the computer, updating the AirPort Express firmware, restarted computers, the whole lot! But it still wont work!
My dad has borrowed an old iBook with a G3 800MHz processor running 10.3.9 Panther. The iBook has an AirPort card in it (not AirPort Extreme), but even downstairs, it gets full (or sometimes 3) connection. I even tried the basement, and it still works!
So my question is, why won't the iMac even connect to the network? Any help is greatly appreciated!
    iMac G5, 1.6GHz, 768MB, AirPort Express   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I'm having a very similar problem with my iMac. I moved the airport down to the basement last week. Reception was at 3, but droped quickly to 2 and 1 and eventually the iMac lost the connection to the airport.
I brought the airport back to the office where the iMac is located and where the airport used to be, but I was unable to join the network again, even though the signal was received by the computer. I downloaded a widget for the dashboard that showed full strength of the signal.
While having these problems with the iMac, I don't have any problems connecting with my iBook to the network. Since I was able to connect to the airport via the iBook, I changed some of the settings, but nothing really helped except disabling wireless security. Agter that I was able to connect to the network via the iMac again, but only for a couple of minutes until the network disappeared again.
I'm reading about lots of other people having problems with the airport recently. So I suspect that this has to do with the recent OS X update. Hopefully somebody at Apple is looking at this problem right now!

  • Airport Utility Can't Connect to Airport Express For Set-up

    Hello,
I have a first gen Airport Express and and am setting it up via the Airport Utility on Windows 7.
The Airport Utility sees the new device, which is currently set to factory. When attempting to a connect to do the guided set-up it fails to connect reporting a "error -4". The Airport itself is blinking amber.
The kicker is though, the wifi works just fine. Just the network has a generic name and is unsecured.
How can I get the Airport Utility to connect to the Express so I can estblish a network name and a security key?
    Thanks so much!

I think it was just a issue with the Airport Windows utility. My girlfriend came over and fixed it with her iPod Touch of all things, took her like 30 seconds to set a name and establish a password. Ive never had a issues setting up a router wirelessly before, in fact many don't even come with software any longer in favor of just instructing you to punch in a special url into a browser.

  • Can't connect to Airport Express speakers in iTunes

    Hi,
I have a Time Capsule and an AX (802.11n).
The AX is connected to a stereo and speakers, and is configured to Join my existing wi
iTunes sees the remote speakers, but when I select them I get an error message and cannot connect.
Also, Airport Utility (6.0) is not allowing me to change the speaker settings (name, password). These options are greyed out, despite the Enable AirPlay option being checked.
    Thanks!

OK, I just solved this same (or similar) problem for myself...
My iTunes on MacMini has been connecting to multiple Expresses for years. Every once in a while, iTunes will "forget" that it is to play through the Expresses and reverts to Computer only. So I would just pop open the Airplay menu and select Multlple Speaker and turn them all on again. Weird, but solvable.
Tonight, no go. I could not select any of the Airport Expresses in this Airplay "speaker chooser." I am running OSX 10.6.8 and iTunes 10.6.1. Was it the recent 10.6.1 update? Not sure, but it points to that.
(By the way, are you saying Airport Utility software update, or do you really mean the Express firmware update?)
Anyway, I tried various normal things, restarting this and that. No luck. Googled this and that, etc. Finally took the plunge and updated the firmware in the Expresses and Time Capsule, which restarts the units. This DID NOT solve the problem (not right away, at least).
I notice that my MacBook Pro's iTunes could connect to all my Expresses (even befoe the Express' firmware updates). This was my first troubleshooting check. This got me to think that this was an Airport vs Ethernet issue. (My Mini and all Expresses are hardwired with Ethernet).
So I turned off Ethernet on the Mini and connected it to my LAN with Airport. Sure enough, now the Mini's iTunes could select all the Expresses!
Weirder still, I turned off the Mini's Airport and reconnected it to my LAN using Ethernet. Voila! The speaker settings in iTunes stuck and now everything is fine. (For now!)
    Computers... errrrr......

  • Can't connect to Airport Express since upgrading my router.

I recently changed my router from an old Netgear 834 to a TP-Link W8961ND and now I keep losing the Airplay Speaker logo from my iphone4, ipad2, and itunes on my Windows 7 PC. When I unplug the AE and restart it connects but afer abour 30-40mins it disconnects and the only way to get it back is to unplug again. Is there some incompatibility with AE and the TP-Link router.

    Same again, here...
    TP-Link TD-W8961ND
    Windows 7 PC
    Mac-mini
    iPad 2
    iPhone 4s
    2 Airport Expresses (1 old, 1 new)
I got the router and second AE (for another room) about a month ago to replace an aging 'g' Netgear (which, although dying occasionally connected to everything and the AE worked fine). Had the same problem from the start (only now properly investigating):
    - Plug in either AE - light goes green
    - Shows up in Airport Utility, speakers on all devices
    - Fine for 30-40 mins
    - Disappears from all devices and Airport Utility but light stays green
    - Only way to resolve is to unplug and plug back in.
Strange. Pretty sure it's not the AE as I have one brand new and one old (which until we got the new router worked fine), and it's unlikely they'd both start exhibiting the same behaviour. So that leaves figuring out potential settings on the TP-Link.
And I don't think it's channel interference as (a) using iStumbler I see all the devices in the area are on either channel 1 or 11 - I've set the router to channel 6, and (b) other people are experiencing the same problem, and it's unlikely we'd all have the same conditions around us.
I'm not too sure about the various wireless settings - they're all a bit beyond me, but will continue with trial and error until something works... will let you know if I find anything.

  • Windows PC can't connect to AirPort Express

I am trying to connect my Windows PC (running XP) to my Airport Express. My Powerbook G4 connects to the Airport wihtout problems, and the Windows PC connects to other wireless networks outside of my house just fine. However, this Windows PC will not "see" my Airport wireless network at all. It does not seem to pick up the Airport signal at all - says there are no wireless networks found in range. What do I need to do? I disabled my wireless security completely, that still didn't work. Help !

    Hi-
You say you get "full wireless connection", but no internet, and "wireless network doesn't show up in Airport Utility" ... ??
    1) You need to get connected to the SSID. (see above notes)
    2) DHCP can be enabled, but if you're not getting to the wireless (no SSID yet, right?) you won't get a useable IP (you getting 169.245.xx.xx?? right?)
    3) 10.1.0.1 (or 10.0.1.1) is your express/router/gateway...terminology varies slightly. You cannot assign that IP to the PC. No duplicates allowed on network.
4)Not sure what number you SAW in 'ipconfig', so I can't tell you to use that. Gut feeling is no...
Subw00er gave a good link to help you.
Get your wireless configuration set properly, using the utility (either the airport utility, or Windows or the one that came with your Netgear card.) My guess is that eithr Windows or netgear will be your first tool.
See the first four messages in this topic. Your situation is no different. Get he utility (windowsWireless or Netgear) working to manually create a network and enter your SSID, and things will progress much faster.

  • Can't connect to Airport Express - "Connection timeout" error msg

Two weeks ago my wireless internet connection failed abruptly.  Since then I have spent time troubleshooting this problem at the Genius Bar of local Apple Store where the problem cannot be replicated with the same equipment (my Airport Express and MacBk Pro).  I have since traded out my old Airport Express for a new one and had the same problem after bringing it home and attempting a setup of the new device.  I went back to Genius Bar and setup new Airport Express only to bring it back home and have the same issue.  Both the modem and the Airport Express have been reset in previous attempts to connect wirelessly.  Equipment is as follows:
    2011 MacBook Pro, OS X10.6.8
    2011 Airport Express
Cable Modem: Motorola SURFboard, model SB5120
    ISP: Comcast
The Airport Express is hardwired to Motorola modem and there is no other network running in my apartment.
    Any suggestions?

Did you ever get this problem fixed? I have a very similar issue going on...

  • How can I connect multiple airport express to airport extreme?

I have an Airport Extreme that is connected to my cable modem. I have 3 Airport Express that I would like to connect to the extreme to extend the signal in my home. I was able to connect 1 but I have been unable to successfully connect the other 2.
Can anyone tell me how o accomplish this?
    Thanks

Power off all four AirPorts in any order that you want
Wait a minute, then power up the AirPort Extreme
Wait another minute and power up the AirPort Express that is working
Move the other two Express devices to the same room or close proximity to the AirPort Extreme
Power up one Express for a minute or two and leave the other Express off for now
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Express for 10 seconds and release
Allow a full minute for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light status
Click the WiFi icon at the top of the Mac's screen
Look for a listing of New AirPort Base Station
Just below that, click on AirPort Express
That will start up the setup wizard. It will take minute to analyze things and then suggest that the Express be configured to extend the AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a short simple name to call the Express, something like Express2 for example, and click Next
The utility will set thing up for you. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done
Now move the Express upstairs and power it up. If the signal must pass through a ceiling, that is a tough assignment, since the ceiling is likely absorbing about half of the signal going through
    Report on your results
