XP permission errors for moved or copied folders on our OSX 10.5.6 share

We have file sharing configured on a Mac Mini running 10.5.6 (fully updated).
SMB file sharing is configured for an administrator account.
No one sits at this computer, it is only used for serving files.
All users, Mac running 10.5.x and PC's running XP-sp3, are logging in are the same admin user for file sharing.
We are having an issue when ever an XP user moves or copies a folder, the permissions on that folder change from the logged in user with full read write permissions, to unknown with read only. This blocks everyone (Mac and PC) from accessing the folder.
The only solution is to use screen sharing, do a get info on the folder and change the permissions back to what they should be.
This is very frustration, and is causing quite a bit of user frustration.
Thanks for your time.

Has anyone else run into this kind of problem?
We set the shared folder up in the HD:Users/Shared directory, would a differnt location be a possible solution to this kind of error?
How about if everyone used the share as a guest? Would that make a difference?

  • Terminal Command For Moving Users Sites Folders?

Let's see if I can get this to make sense. I have an Xserve setup as a Web server in my high school classroom. I create student accounts every year and they ftp their Web sites into their ~xyz/Sites folder.
What I'd like to do is at the end of every school year, be able to move the students Web sites to a new directory or archiving, but still be visible to make room for new students. So, something like:
    move ~xyz/Sites to 0809/~xyz
Or something. I am not really sure. I'd just like to easily move old sites and remove the users from the servers, but still have those sites up. Does that make sense? If so is there an easy way to do this?

Looks like to me there has been a recent update to TotalFinder.  Claims to support 10.8, now. See
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/33373/totalfinder
I misunderstood your questions.  I thought you wanted to display the files in the Terminal.  You want to change the way the finder displays files.

  • Moving files and folders in the Library module

I teach a lot of LR users and one area that's consistantly frustrating and unintuitive (even to some experienced users) are the rules for moving files and folders around in the Library module. I'm not sure I have all the right answers/suggestions/remedies but here are the basic points worth examining:
    1) Additional hard drives aren't listed unless images from it have been imported into Lightroom. It would be nice if people could add a new hard drive without importing files from it. People don't get it that you can select "Add Folder" from the Folders pop up menu. Classic example: Say someone has purchased a new hard drive for archiving purposes. It's empty and they want to drag folders of images onto it from within LR. Possible Solution: include a "Add Drive..." option from the Folder's panel + pop-up menu that would behave the same and add a root level folder.
    2) One can't drag more than one folder at a time. While I assume this is designed to prevent accidental mass movement it would be nice if one could enable the movement of multiple folders.
    3) One can't drag a folder onto the main drive bar that lists the drive's name and capacities - one has to drag onto a folder within a drive. I'd love to be able to drag a folder onto the root level of a drive by dropping onto the drive bar (this would be similar to the MacOS finder).
    4) Sometimes the root level of a drive isn't apparent. One may need to right click on a folder and select "Show Parent Folder" to show the root level folder which is named after the volume. Showing a root "folder" that has the same name as the drive is also confusing to people since there isn't actually a folder on the hard drive with that name.  I completely understand why folders are hidden by default and I'm not sure the remedy is but, again, this isn't intuitive for new users. If #3 worked as described perhaps we could have root level access without the root folder?

Perhaps I should add that I really like and appreciate a lot of the decisions that have already been implemented into the Library's Folder's tab. Moving files instead of copying them, showing only folders that contain imported images, the ability to show or hide parent folders.... Bravo!

  • LR4.2 - Error when moving files

I can repeatedly reproduce an error when moving files into folders within LR4.2.
My current folder structure is setup like:
    F:\pictures\YEAR\Folder name\Sub folder\
When I'm moving files from "Folder name" to "Sub folder" I will be moving approx 6 - 20 photos at a time when sorting them into sub folders. After a while of moving files, LR will stop allowing you to move files and will show up the O symbol with a line through it. Until you close and re-open LR will it allow you to start moving photos again.
I've had this happen 3 times on me now and is completely reproducible. As above, move a small amount of files from a parent folder into a child folder repeatedly and eventually it will refuse to move any more photos until you restart LR.

    Hi,
I experienced the same problem and error message this morning ...and found that the following steps will resolve the error (at least when using LR 3 on a MAC):
    (1) Open LR and rename all the files that you are trying to move by hitting the F2 button, (MAC shortcut)
    (2) Look for any images that may have a '?' mark next to them and resolve if required.  (The '?' indicates a file 'location' conflict within the catalogue, - ie you may have moved the files around outside of LR)
    (3) While still within LR ....highlight all the files that need to be moved ....and drag and drop them into your preferred new location in the usiual way.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers

  • Error message: File can't be opened right now because it's being used by another task, such as moving or copying an item or emptying the Trash. Try again when the current task is complete.

I recently transferred some data from my external hard drive to my desktop, but there was an error transferring some of the files and it couldn't respond, and eventually i simply removed the external hard drive. However, the folder/files are still on my desktop, and when i try to move them or delete them, this error message appears:
“-folder/file name-” can’t be opened right now because it’s being used by another task, such as moving or copying an item or emptying the Trash. Try again when the current task is complete.
Since I removed the external hard drive before the files were finished transferring, there is no way for the current task to be completed. How can I resolve this and delete the folders/files from my desktop?

I just managed to resolve this by going to the apple sign in the top left, choosing force quit (or you could do option+command+esc), then i chose finder, and i clicked relaunch. After relaunching finder, the error message doesn't appear anymore, and I could move these files/folders, and delete them just fine.
Hope this will help other people who encounter similar problems in the future!

I had recently updated from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 and thus had to re download Adobe Digital Editions. I downloaded Version 4.0 but the problem seemed to be with the authorization between the e-reader and the computer. While in ADE click the help button and click erase authorization then re do your user id and password. It worked for me.

    Hi,
yes, I used the tool many times in the past, however I remember I had some issues only due to the foldername "Documents and Settings" due to the fact it includes even 2 spaces. I changed the location of my .dtc and .dtr folders under a folder like C:\JDIworkspace and I managed to save myself from many headaches. Still I am not yet sure this is your problem, it is maybe worth to try it, there's nothing to lose anyway. If you have 700 NWDS and you want to go for this option, let me know and I tell you how to do it.
Coming back to the error message, I can see two errors in the trace:
A). the problem about the ~ character. This error is strange, I never faced before, and the DCtool should not have a problem with it as this is the namespace separator in DC names, it should be able to handle it. However as mentioned, "Documents and Settings" will be "translated" as "DOCUME~1" and maybe this also confuses the tool.
B). The "Access is denied" error. For this you can specify recursively to grant access for your user for the corresponding folder. I guess you have tried it, but to be on the safe side I rather ask it.
Can you please first ensure that you have full access rights to the folder (and its subfolders) you can see in the error message?
Can you please also tell me the version of the SCs in these tracks? I guess the version is >= 7.1 (I assume from the name like ENGINEAPI, etc). Can you pleae also tell me from which NWDS you use the DCTool? Is it a 700 NWDS?
Let me know whether this helps or gives any idea.
    Best Regards,
    Ervin

  • Moving Library - Permission Error (Windows Vista)

I'm trying to move my iTunes media to an external hard drive, but I keep getting a Permission error when I try to consolidate my library. I've searched for ways to fix the permissions, but the only answers I've found are for Mac and I have Windows Vista.
Here's what I did on iTunes:
    Edit>Preferences>Advanced
I clicked "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library"
Then next to "iTunes Media Folder Location" I hit Change and selected my external hard drive F: and the folder within it titled "iTunes Media Folder 2" and hit OK.
    Then I hit:
    File>Library>Organize Library>Consolidate Files
But then I receive this permissions error message:
"Copying failed because you don't have permission to change your iTunes Media Folder or a folder within it."
I tried going into my Music folder (not on iTunes, on my actual computer) to try and see what's wrong:
    Start>Music>(Right click) iTunes folder>Properties>Security
And I have full control to edit/read/write, etc. so I have no idea what's going on.
    Help, please?

    To be more specific,
all the security type on bin directory property - on control, read, write, all have been granted.
I click on the bin directory, it is showing read only, then I uncheck it, and click apply to all subdirectories and confirm.
Then I check the bin directory property again, it is still showing read only.
    thanks again

i am getting the error message "could not copy to requested location" to a drive i have been using for over a year... when I do the same thing to another drive - it works just fine. why?

    Possibly the drive is full
Possibly the permissions are not set to WRITE permission
Possibly there has been a "user mistake" and you think you are copying to a drive you have been using for over a year but something has accidentally changed and you're copying to a different location

I got the same error as I tried to build my application, the reason was the string I set for the 'Build specification name' property of my build.

  • I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro (2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks?  I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility.   Is this possible or do I need to purchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?

I want to install Snow Leopard Server on our MacPro(2.66) using Mac Mini Snow Leopard Server disks?  I kept getting an error for backwards compatibility.   Is this possible or do I need topurchase another copy of Snow Leopard Server?

The OS disks that are shipped with a particular product
are set up so that tey will only install on that product.
It will install on any Mini of that exact vintage, but that
    is all.
This is to prevent people from doing exactly what you
are trying to do.  The license for OSX shipped with any
is only valid for that product.  Also, Snow Leopard,
including Server, is only permitted to be run on one
computer at a time.  Bottom line, unlike Lion, legally
you cannot install the same copy on multiple
computers unless some "family pack" or site license
    is purchased.
Yes, you need to purchase another copy.
The copy of Snow Leopard license is here:

    Hi Marco_Ben_IT,
Do not install SQL Server to the root directory of a mount point, setup fails when the root of a mounted volume is chosen for the data file directory, we must always specify
a subdirectory for all files. This has to do with how permissions are granted. If you must put files in the root of the mount point you must manually manage the ACLs/permissions. We need to create a subfolder under the root of the mount point, and install
    there.
