XP Running Very Slow - cannot use my computer

We have a Dell Inspiron I 9300 with a Pentium M processor running at 1,73 GHz with 1 GB RAM. I have Windows XP Media Center Edition updated with Service Pack 3; BIOS Revision A04.
A few months ago, we started getting the Blue Screen of Death, with increasing regularity and finally it became a real problem. With help from the MS Tech Center>Forums community posts, I diagnosed the problem, using the Windows Debugger, to a touch pad driver, which was cured by installing an updated driver. We got another BSoD, which I diagnosed to a modem problem, and cured that by disabling the modem, which we don't use.
After getting the computer back to working order (no BSoBs now – touch wood), our computer has gotten extremely slow. On booting and while running. This slow performance only occurred after I solved the BSoD.
I went through the usual process – chkdsk, defrag, memory checks, verifier. I ran four different anti-virus programs (all showed no infections), added and ran Spybot (no problems detected). I also used the msconfig to disable all non-essential (I believed – but stayed on the safe side if I wasn't pretty sure) applications from the start-up. I also disabled non-essential services also using msconfig.
I have run a registry cleaner after every set of changes.
I then monitored the computer performance using the Windows Task Manager. The CPU is almost always running at 100%. There are a lot of applications running. For a while it seemed that explorer.exe was running all the time, so I used the Windows Process Monitor to look at the process tree for explorer.exe to see what was running and made sure that all applications were located in the correct directories and were approx the correct size.
The icons on the desktop do refresh constantly; almost with every mouse click. If I open My Computer or Control Panel, the scanning flashlight appears and it takes quite some time for the programs and files to appear.
I even tried to lower the screen resolution (from 1440x900 to 1280x768 and even lower) based on a post that pointed to a video card issue. This did nothing. I am not connected to a network and checked that this was disabled (another post suggestion).
I have pasted the Processes Tab from Task Manager, soon after start up below. As you can see there are a lot of applications running and I hope this can provide a clue. Something is hogging the CPU. (COULD NOT PASTE)
Can someone please offer some other tips. I would rather not re-install XP, although I have (of course) backed up the c:drive).

1) No, F5 key is not stuck.
2) I was looking at the Task Manager>Processes tab to see what was running -it's a lot. That was what I was trying to paste a screen capture of.
3) I do have SysInternals Process Monitor on my computer Process. This was suggested by MSFT guy. I am not an advanced user, so cannot really interpret the information from Process Monitor. On his suggestion, I did look at the Tools>Process Tree and check all of the processes running under explorer.exe and did delete some. Today I ran a Tools>Process Activity Summary and it showed:
File Entry: explorer.exe was highest (58k), followed by sprtcmd.exe (35k), svchost.exe (8k), then csrss.exe (6k);
[also ashServ.exe (Spybot)]
Registry Entry: services.exe (268k) was highest, followed by explorer.exe (259k), then sprtcmd.exe (48k),
svchost.exe (27k) & s24Evmon.exe (35k) - here teatimer (Spybot) was very high.
(does not include Mozilla or HiJackThis. sprtcmd.exe was not showing up on an earlier scan.)
I also ran a Process Monitor>Tools>File Summary and can provide this.
4) HiJackThis log is posted below.
I did add Windows Defender yesterday, based on a post from some time ago, and did a scan, but have deactivated it since. I am using Avast as the anti-virus, along with Malwarebytes (not in background) and am running Spybot in the background).

Problem description:
My computer is running very slow ever since I switched to Yosemite. I get the multicolored wheel just opening my browser at times and waiting for a page to open, or an application. Any ideas other than rebooting my computer to get the problem to alleviate for a few days?

Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:

Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.

Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.

About file quarantine in OS X
If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
Troubleshooting Applications
I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
drive being backed up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Carbon Copy Cloner
2. Get Backup
3. Deja Vu
4. SuperDuper!
5. Synk Pro
6. Tri-Backup

Additional Hints
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
Pre-Mavericks
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder. Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order. If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar. Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process. See if that helps. Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Mavericks and later

Problem description:
(MacBook Pro 15” late 2008, OSX Yosemite 10.10.2 installed, no pending updates) computer is running very slow - takes 2-3 minutes to open apps such as Pages, even when no other apps are open. Randomly freezes and becomes unresponsive, requiring forced power down. Randomly logs off. Removed Kodak AIO software via Clean My Mac2, but BonjourAgent still there and requesting access. Cleaned weekly with Clean My Mac2 and running Sophos AntiVirus. 2GB memory installed. Currently 169.99 GB available of 249.2 GB capacity.

Since installing Parallels 7 and Windows 7 (to use Quicken), my imac and the virtual computer run very slow. Is there a good fix?
Start up while holding Command R and run Disk Utility, check the SMART status and repair your hard drive.

Macbook is running very slow and pop-ups come up constantly while using both Safari & Chrome.
My 2008 macbook has a virus on it caused by me accidentally clicking a wrong download while making a mix tape for a friend ( I was using a website that is not illegal btw) and now my computer is running very slow. As well as having pop ups all over my chrome and safari with EVERYTHING I do. If someone out there could help me its very much appreciated as I am a college student with various online classes. My mac is running very slow
- I have noticed that memory used is 3.99 out of 4.00 and the process taking most of it is safari web content. Problem also appears when I use Firefox
- this happens even I only have safari or firefox open. No other applications
- I have about 80Gb free disk space
Thanks for any suggestions1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) on the advice of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.

4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At or near the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with "System Version." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

HT1338 Is there a Mac System Clean-up? My computer is running very slow and freeze all the times
I don't know why my computer is running very slow and keeps freezing all the times. It would take at least 2-3 min to load up after the not using it for 5 min. For instance when I type my paper or doing anything on the computer and leave for a fews min after come back it would not start and the icon keeps on spinning.
ThanksPretty much all "clean-up" utilities will just make things worse.
You need to determine what it is that is causing the problem.
How much RAM do you have?
For the following, report what you get when the system is running slow and beachballing.
Open Activity Monitor (Utilities folder) and click on System Memory tab at the bottom of the screen. What does it say for Page Outs?
Also, at the top of the window, select All Processes. Click on the %CPU header until the arrow points down. Anything pop up at the top of the list that is using a very high percentage of CPU?
What you describe can be caused by incompatible third-party software. Boot into Safe mode and see if the problems still exist. Safe mode will be a little slower than normal, but you shouldn't see the system freeze up.

ShahzadGet statspack/AWR running against your database and analyze the reports. 15 minutes interval between snaps should be enough.
That should give you a clue as to what is going wrong in your database.
Since you are saying that the reports speed was better a few months ago, it is possible that you are suffering from "data growth".
