Xserve ethernet ports shows connected though no physical connection

Hi all...
We have a very strange issue in the 3 latest xserves (with Nehalem processors)that is purchsed couple of days back. The issue is, in the Network, System preference, both the ethernet ports shows green and displays as "Connected" even though there is no physical connectivity. This active state of the eth ports is visible only in the network system preference and the port state shows as inactive if we check through CLI and the server monitor. Both the ports functions normally except for these wrong info in the system preference.
Have anyone faced any issue with the latest Nehalem processor Xserves or is this be a bug in the OS X. The installed OS version is 10.5.7 and the firmware is up to date.
Please help !!

Call Apple Support for assistance; this looks to be a nasty error with multiple new Xserve boxes and given these are likely covered under their initial warranty, which implies there's something seriously weird with 10.5.6 or 10.5.7, or with the Xserve early 2009 boxes, or firmware, or with what the configuration tools allow.
It appears that [threadID=2021235|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2021235] and [threadID=2021817|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2021817&tst art=0] are the same case?

  • Ethernet port not connected - airport working - not able to get online

Hi, new poster. Never had an issue with our beloved iMac 20 inch Intel Core 2 Duo 2.16 GHz - 2GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM. It's old but it serves us, we hope it's not shot. Power goes out a lot here, system has surge protection but no battery backup. System just goes down without being shutdown properly. We used wired Ethernet. No the problem. Last time power just went out, the system would not boot up. I searched around and found out to use the DVD to verify/repair disk. It finally did and system now boots up. However, it says the Ethernet is not connected. It is. I tried three different cables that worked with our laptop and two different routers, all that happens is the light on the router flashed on and off. While on the network status in sys pref displays no cable detected vs. Cable connected but not connected to internet. Assumed the port was shot. OK, turned on the airport. Connects, gets DHCP assigned IP address and/or accepts static IP but when we launch Safari says it can't connect. Tried Opera browser, same thing. Sophos AV also can't connect for updates. All these network configurations had worked previously until this last power outage. Searched for help, as I don't want to waste peoples time. Found out about these things that follow: SMC RESET - PRAM RESET - Delete connection and recreate same - Network Diagnostics - Hardware Diagnostics - Verify & Repair disk ••• Nothing makes it connect to Internet. Network diagnostics gets to end but will not get connected. Hardware diagnostics regular and extended report no issues. We think the logic board is shot given everything we tried and symptoms with system. Can anyone suggest something we did not try of the things we did listed above? Please help us save this thing from the recycling center. Thanks in advance. Sorry for the long post, wanted to be thorough with what's going on and what we have already tried and done thanks to searching these forums for the last week.

    Yikes, sounds like big problems!
Have you blown the dust out lately?

  • We traded our home internet service for a Sprint Hot Spot.  The hot spot does not have an ethernet port to connect through.  Can we connect our time capsule to the wireless hot spot?

Hello, we switched our home internet service from an ethernet modem to a wireless hot spot.
Do you know if there is a way to connect our time capsule to the hot spot?
Everything I read only suggests connecting through an ethernet cable.  I'm hoping there is a way to do this.
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!!!

No you can't join a wireless hotspot with a Time Capsule directly via it's 'join' option (tried and failed - well to be exact it kinda works but the Time Capsule's ethernet ports no longer work).
What you can do is buy an airport express and use it's 'join' option to connect to the iPhone's hotspot. Then you connect the airport express via ethernet to the time capsule (in bridge-mode).
You can then connect your computers to the time capsule via ethernet or use it's wireless function to set up wireless network (with a different name to that of the hotspot) that your wifi stuff can connect to.

No you can not use the Ethernet port on the printer.  This is only to connect the printer to a wired network.

  • I can not use the Ethernet Port to connect another device.  My Airport Express allowed me to do this.

I want to use the Ethernet Port for my Apply TV for another device (Direct TV box), but it doesn't work.  I have Airport Express with an Ethernet port and I was able to plug my Direct TV box to download.

It's not designed to extend a network, and plugging in ethernet disables wi-fi in any case.

  • Ethernet port not connected

    Hello,
Since a couple of hours, my Ethernet interface (through a Thunderbolt or USB connector) remains "not connected".
I couldn't find a clear answer to this problem ... Any idea ?

Try resetting the SMC and PRAM.

  • Ethernet Port On TV To Mac?

Panasonic Viera TV has an ethernet port. Connect TV by ethernet cable to G5 Airport/hub setup. Then, what? What's supposed to happen? Is TV into Mac via ethernet possible? How?
Nothing in the TV user manual. Panasonic will not provide an answer. (I think they don't even know. That ethernet port on the back of the TV was an accident maybe.)

I saw those articles. Yet, the ethernet port must have more uses. Is there a way to send video from any ethernet-equipped TV to the Mac by ethernet cable?

  • What is the ethernet port for on airport express?

Can I use the ethernet port to connect an asset (in this case a Sony Blu Ray player) to my wireless network?  I can see my AE on the wireless network and I have a solid green light on the AE.  I have connected the Blu Ray player by ethernet to the AE but my Blu Ray cannot see my network.  Should it be able to?

Finally then, can I use my outdated A 1088 for wireless printing
    Sure
do I still need to use AirPort Utility v5.6
AirPort Utility 5.6 has the same look and layout that has been standardized in AirPort Utiliy for the past 4-5 years. 6.0 looks very different and will take some time for most folks to get used to.
I would suggest that you keep both 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac and use the version which is most comfortable for you.

  • Airport Express Ethernet port compatability

I have my Tivo hardwired to my Airport Extreme in another room. I just bought an AppleTV, thinking I could use the Ethernet port to connect to the Tivo and then wirelessly connect everything back to the Airport Extreme with no cables.
Apple didn't have any official answers except that it's not supported. Can I possibly use my now abandoned Airport Express as a way to put the Tivo's ethernet on the wireless network. I hate to buy more hardware.
    Any ideas?

Hello John153. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
In order to enable the Ethernet port of the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), the AX needs to be configured as either a remote or relay base station in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) with either your AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) or the Time Capsule (TC).
I'm afraid I don't quite understand what you are trying to do. I assume that the Tivo has a single Ethernet port and you have this connected directly to the AEBS which, in turn, is connected to the Internet ... correct?
You cannot use either the TC or the AX as a wireless adapter for the Tivo. However, if you have the TC configured in a WDS with the AEBS, you could use one of the TC's available LAN ports for the Tivo.

  • Presales: HWIC-4ESW= on 2821 to increase Ethernet port?

    Hi there,
I was not able to receive help from Cisco partner and distributor so I'm hoping that I'll get response from here.
We have CISCO2821-V3PN/K9 whose two Gigabit ports are already used. I need additional Ethernet port to connect the router to the Internet Leased Line.
Below "appears to be" the right product but the module is a switch which to my understanding is meant for connecting to the inside LAN rather than to the Internet.
HWIC-4ESW= Four port 10/100 Ethernet switch interface card
Grateful if someone could shed some light and give me the right product (part no.) we need to buy.
    Thanks in advance.
    Archie

    Hello Archie,
a configuration for a VLAN on your 2821 would look like this:
    interface Vlan2
    ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
You can assign that VLAN, 2 in this case, to one of the switchports, just like you would assign it to a ´normal´, or better, external switch:
    interface FastEthernte0/1/0
    switchport access vlan 2

  • Bridge between airport card and ethernet port

My son wants to access the internet through the ethernet port to connect his xbox 360. My airport extreme base station is upstairs and my powermac g5 is in the basement and connects to the internet through the airport network (airport extreme card to base station). One of his friends says he can configure a bridge between his wireless card and his ethernet port on his windows computer and was trying to do it on my mac. Can a bridge be configured between the airport extreme card and the ethernet port on the g5 which will allow an ethernet device to connect to the internet? Any advice will greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    Larry

I have used an external ethernet bridge in the past. What I am wondering is: How can the airport card be configured to create a bridge to the ethernet port on the computer, so the game console could be connected to the back of the g5 with an ethernet cable and then connected to the tv with a/v cables. Do I have to use some external device to provide an internet connection to the game console or is there some way to share the connection from the airport card to the ethernet port?

  • Selecting USB-ethernet or Ethernet Port

    Hello,
I am running a Labview .vi suite on a laptop which has
    1. Ethernet port connected to instrumentation via a DSL router
    2. USB-ethernet converter connected to our work network (for accessing internet and sending data).
For reasons regarding our work network I cannot simply connect the work network to the DSL router so require a second port on the laptop.
The labview program communicates with the instrumentation via the ethernet port of the laptop. The labview .vi then spurts out data which needs to be broadcast via the USB-ethernet connection of the laptop to our work ethernet network.
So the communication of ethernet port to instrumentation is isolated from the network.
The problem I am having is that when the .vi runs it cannot connect to the instrumentation via the ethernet port because the USB-ethernet port is connected. When I remove the USB-ethernet port it can connect to the instrumentation via the ethernet port but data cannot be broadcast on the network via the USB-ethernet port.
Is there any way selecting the ethernet port in the .vi as it is impractical to keep removing and replacing the USB-ethernet port at just the right time.
    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,
The first step is to get both ethernet devices recognised correctly, at the same time, in NI MAX. Once you can identify them seperately in MAX you should be able to call them from LabVIEW.
Try adding your USB ethernet device as a seperate device in MAX and see if this helps.
    Best Regards,

  • WRT160NL blinking Ethernet ports and wireless LED

I have a 2-3 month old WRT160NL that has been working fine until 2-3 days ago I noticed that the Ethernet port thats connected to a computer and the wireless LED has started blinking rapidly.  Even after a power cycle that this blinking happens.  Router seems to function ok BUT by internet connect has slowed down specially the wireless part.  Any ideas?  I have a wireless printer that's connected to this router and I can not even ping it anymore. It never did this before and I have not changed any settings lately.  I have borrowed a friend's WRT160NL and no blinking on his router and provides me with a fast connection and my wireless printer works using his WRT160NL.
Any help is appreciated, else I'll probably return this router under warantee.
    Thank you.

thanks for the replies.  figured out the problem.  the router is secure.  for some reason the wireless connection between the wireless printer and the router has dropped low which made the router to send out "more packets or signals" to keep the connection going which explains the very constant blinking on the wireless light.  when i moved the printer a little closer the blinking stopped.  this probably would explain my "slower" internet connections specially with wireless.  i just fiddled around with the linksys antenna and things look ok.  im just currently trying to figure out how to "extend" that wireless reach from the router to the printer -- maybe a high gain antenna.
    thank you.

  • Configuring Ethernet Ports

I have a Power Mac G5 that has 2 ethernet ports on the back. The first I use to connect to the internet. I would like to use the other one to connect to a Xerox printer. I think I have to use AppleTalk to do that, but I'm not sure that is correct. When I try to do that I'm informed by OSX that AppleTalk can only be active on one network port at a time.
How can I use the second ethernet port to connect to my printer?
    Patrick

Thanks for your reply. I don't know very much about ethernet/appletalk, but somehow I managed to get the printer connected to the network. But it turned out that the setup wouldn't allow me to upload, via FTP a new driver, so I had to reconfigure the network anyway, and connected it to a DSL router. That works too.
In the process of learning more I've come across the term "CUPS driver" a few times, but I don't know what that is. Can you explain it to me or point me in the right direction to read about it?
    Patrick
