Xserve G4 Dual 1.3GHz PCI Options?

I just picked up a Dual 1.3GHz G4 Xserve. I was wondering what my PCI options are. I was looking for what exact video cards work. So far I have only came up with the ATI8500 I believe. Is there any SATA cards that work to add external storage? Any info is helpful. I will be running 10.4 server on it with 4 180GB drives.

I had a similar problem when I received my xServe. My xServe is a slightly older xServe (1 GB, Dual), but the video cards should work the same in both servers.
I looked at the ATI 8500, but it was too expensive.
Look on eBay for an ATI 7000
I purchased one at a reasonable price. It works great, although not very powerful. It supports most basic resolutions which is fine for a server. This hardware was never designed for great video and the bus is no way near the performance you would get on a G5 desktop.

I also looked into SATA to try and get away from ATA. Stay with the ATA as the cards are really expensive (MetaRAID cards) and the performance on the ATA cards is good and marginally slower than a SATA. They already have (hotswap thanks to Apple), but it is kind of flakey.
If you want external, go firewire 400. You have two ports on the xServe and firewire is much easier (and faster) with OSX than USB. You can get some pretty big firewire drives from Maxtor now, some with built in RAID 0 or RAID 1.
Otherwise, buy up a bunch of older drive holders and add the standard ATA drives when needed.

  • Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 PCI (4 RAM Slots) - want to upgrade to 8GB?

My computer is a Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 PCI (4 RAM Slots)
Is there any way I can break out of the 4GB RAM limit into the world of 8GB RAM without having to buy a newer computer. I need to open a large 4.5GB TGA file in After Effects (48000 pixels x 36000 pixels).
Failing that, is there an application like RAM doubler I could use temporarily to get me though this job?
Power Mac G5 Dual 1.8 PCI (4 RAM Slots)   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   Currently have 4GB RAM installed

If there is not enough RAM, OSX will use space on the disk drive, so the amount of RAM should not limit the file size an application can handle, but speed will be reduced. 32-bit addressing can restrict the use of huge files, but there are ways that applications can get around it (at the expense of lower speed).
If After Effects has a file size limit, extra RAM will not help A later version (maybe using 64-bit mode) may handle larger files. 64-bit applications can be written to run in Tiger on G5s, but will be easier to write when Leopard is released.
You may be able to use some other application, such as Photo Shop, or Graphics Converter, to extract part of the TGA file, or reduce its size by changing its resolution, so you can use the result in After Effects.

  • How does the system Validyne pressure transducer -- Validyne CD280-Dual-- SCB-68-- PCI-6024E-- LABVIEW work and how can we calibrate the pressure transducer?

    Hello there,
I am completely new to the LABVIEW software.
I am learning an existing LABVIEW code of my pressure acquisition system (attached) which has the data path as following: Validyne pressure transducer --> Validyne CD280-Dual--> SCB-68--> PCI-6024E--> LABVIEW and I have some question:
    1. How does the complete system from transducer to the LABVIEW work? ie if we apply the pressure at the transducer, it will change the resistance of the transducer then ....?
    2. How can I find the equation which express the relationship between the pressure and the voltage at the oupt of the Validyne CD280-Dual in the LABVIEW?
    3. If I want to do the calibration for the transducer, what are steps?

  • PCI Option For iMac

I own a professional recording studio. The studio and the software I use was purchased with a Mac in mind from the start. Unfortunately after spending far too much money on my mics, outboard gear, mixing console and the rest the bank was broke and a Mac capable of running the studio was not in the budget. I had always had a tower in mind because it always was dominant Mac and could be expanded. Also for one major reason, use PCI based plugins and my interface for recording needs a PCI slot to run as well. With the advances in Mac over the last couple years months the iMac could fit my needs far better than a tower, and with a 24" screen, it would be ideal for mixing. Are there PCI options out there for iMacs, such as something that would plug in via firewire or ethernet? Thought I's ask the experts.
    thanks

I hate to disappoint you but iMacs are not designed for expansion. They do not have available PCI slots for third-party cards. For that you need a tower style Mac. You might consider something from the G4 or early G5 Power Mac tower lines such as the QuickSilver or Mirrored Drive Door G4s or one of the earlier G5 models that still have PCI slots. Later G5s have PCI-X slots. Because these are no longer in production they can be purchased used through eBay or some online retailers who vend used/refurbed older Macs.

  • MySQL 5.0.27-max xserve g5 dual run very slow

    Hi to all,
I have a very strange problem on my dual G5 xserve running php and mysql5.
I upgrated from mysql 4.01 to mysql 5 5.0.27 and now my server is very slow during queries.
My CPU is always used at 45% by MySQL and I have not too much connections or users at the same time.
I found this link: http://www.shawnhogan.com/2005/10/mysql-problems-on-mac-os-x-server.html that explain something about mysql 5 on xserve.
Is very strange if I reboot mysql it runs normally but after some queries it returns slow again...
    Anyone has some idea?
    Thank you all
    Yorh

I've actually tried all the USB ports and get same results. I went and bought a Sonnet USB2.0 high speed PCI adapter thinking a dedicated controller would help. It was actually slower than the onboard USB2.0 ports. Again, this same drive hooked up to my Windows XP computer performs about 4 times faster.
At this point I've purchased an external SATA card from Sonnet, the Tempo X eSATA 4x4 card. As soon as I get an eSATA cable this sould prove to be a lot better.
I'd sitll like to know if other people get similar poor performance on USB2.0 external drives vs Firewire 400 on the same computer. I stopped buying FW enclosures when it seemed Apple was abandoning firewire on their ipods and there is no Firewire 800 on the macbook pro or intel iMacs.

  • Xserve G5 Dual 2.3 GHz G5

Im looking to purchase a xserve G5 2.3 Dual what hard drive will the bays take a SATA drive ? if so what capacity /

The XServe G5 does, indeed, have SATA drive bays. Typically you're limited to the drive options that Apple provide in their Apple Drive Modules (ADM - the drive trays that incorporate the drive interface to the internal bus). Some people have reported success in replacing the drive in an ADM with a larger one (I've heard of up to 1TB), but you're on your own (especially as far as sourcing empty Apple Drive Modules you can add drives to).

  • Pros and cons of various dual boot  and virtual options?

I have purchased a 500 GB hdd 8 GB RAM Macbook Air with the intent of being able to run a few PC programs (i.e., no Mac versions) a few times a week, both of which are radiology image viewing programs.  I can cover other programs with Mac software versions.
Years ago I worked briefly with a computer that used Parallels.  It seemed to be OK--in fact, there was a compatilbility mode that allowed me to run PC programs along with the native Mac programs, so it must have been a virtual setup.
With this new hardware, I can make my own choice about whether to do a frank dual boot or whether to run Windows 7 as a virtual machine, I guess, under Parallels or VMWare.  I would appreciate any input from people who have experience with doing any of the combinations, including comments about how difficult the installation is/was and whether there is a noticeable slow-down because of use of resources, particularly with the virtual methods.  My Air boots quite quickly--does the boot time into Win 7 with Boot Camp extend boot time significantly?   What other questions should concern me?  (one other question that I asked in a different part of the forum concerns the difference between PC and Mac keyboards and how that is handled with dual boot or virtual machines...)
    Thanks
    Ken K

There are some other options for running PC programs on your Mac besides installing Windows, which have the great advantage of not requiring Windows on your Mac, which is like putting a turd on your hamburger. Two options I have used are Wine winebottler.kronenberg.org  and Crossover  Run Windows on Mac and Linux, easily and affordably - CodeWeavers . Crossover is a bit easier to use, and Wine is free. Not every PC app will work on them, but many do.
Running a virtual machine will definitely be slower than boot camp. How slow will depend on the app and how much RAM it needs. MRIs and CTs with a lot of images can use a lot of disk space and memory.
If you have windows on your Mac you will need virus protection at least on the Windows part, which will slow your Mac down more.
I have used OsiriX for Mac, and it works well. OsiriX (Mac) - Download

    Hi there!
So you got a dual core machine huh?
    Let's narrow down your choices.
The Radeon 2600 and the 3870 are Mac Pro cards. They won't work in the G5.
    Forget the X1300 as well.
The Radeon X1900 is a possible candidate, but it must be the G5 Edition X1900 GT. The one that you linked is for Intel macs (Mac Pro).
In fact, all cards that you linked are not candidates for the G5.
Here are your choices from slower to faster:
    Geforce 6600 256MB
    Geforce 7800GT
    Radeon X1900GT G5 Edition
    Quadro FX 4500
    Geforce 7800 GTX

  • X1 Carbon 2015 - Where is the 256 GB PCIe option?

So the 2015 refresh of X1 Carbon is here. When I am configuring one in the Lenovo shop, I see these options for storage:
128GB Solid State Drive, Serial ATA
180 GB Solid State Drive Opal 2.0 - Capable
256 GB Solid State Drive Opal 2.0 - Capable
240 GB Solid State Drive Opal 2.0 - Capable
512 GB Solid State Drive PCIe
I've heard from some early hands-on videos there there ought to be a 256 GB PCIe SSD option. Which is it?

    bionic89 wrote:
you're looking at the 2014 model. the new one is not available yet and there is no release date yet.
I'm looking at the 2015 X1 model on Lenovo Canada's website. One way to confirm this is by the CPU options, i5-5200U, i5-5300U and i7-5600U. These are all the latest Broadwell-U series processors. The only PCIe SSD is 512 GB. Also the MTM for this is 20BS, not the previous 20A7 and 20A8.
Another anomaly is that if I select the base i5-5200U CPU the configurator won't let me upgrade to 8GB RAM. I have to select the  i5-5300U and pay $100 for that in order to have the opportunity to pay another $100 for the RAM upgrade. Hopefully this is just an anomaly in the configurator and not some silly marketing limitation.
Added: I found this parts list via Google: X1 Carbon Gen 2 MT: 20BS, 20BT. It shows several motherboard FRUs that have an i5-5200U with 8GB RAM.

  • HP Envy H8-1540t - dual graphics cards, Pcie 3.0 support

I have 2 questions about using dual graphics cards and Pcie 3.0 support in my machine.
    The machine is:
    HP Envy H8-1540t
    Win 8 64
    i7-3820 2nd Gen
    10 GB DDR3 1600
    256 GB SSD

    TV Tuner
Prem wireless N-Lan and Blutooth 2x2
    600 Watt PSU
    NVidia GTX 660
    This machine uses the Pegatron IPIWB-PB motherboard and has 2 Pcie x 16 slots. I realize that by using dual width GPU's like the GTX 660, the smaller Pcie slots next to them will be buried, rendering them useless. So these are my 2 questions;
1.) Will 2 Nvidia GTX 660 GPU's physically fit within the machine and be supported?
2.)  Does this motherboard with it's Intel X79 chipset support Pcie 3.0?
    Thank You
    This question was solved.

  • Dual 2.3ghz g5 won't boot.

I bought this power mac G5 dual 2ghz april, 2005 model recently. It was working like a charm until yesterday. Suddenly it froze up for a long period and I eventually had to manually shut it down with the power button. Upon restart, all that happened was that it went to the white screen with the grey apple logo. No progress indicator, just the logo. In the process, there is no HD noise at all, only fans. When I hold the alt key to boot, it shows the Macintosh HD volume but as I proceed it just returns to the logo screen. It won't do the normal safeboot however when I tried the alternate safe boot, it gave me this message and stopped. "Apple Intel CPU Power Management isn't a valid Mach-O (magic is cefaedfe)" This message was repeated several times on the screen. In addition, I have done the standard resets to the pram nvram and the reset on the button on the logic board all with no results. I switched the HD to another PM G5 tower and it booted that machine up with no problems which leaves me to believe my logic board may have gone south. Any suggestions?

Hi meta360, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I switched the HD to another PM G5 tower and it booted that machine up with no problems which leaves me to believe my logic board may have gone south.
It may well verily be, but occasionally running AHT "cures" it...
Boot off your original G5 Install Disk while holding down Option/alt key to select AHT, then run the extended Apple Hardware Test.

  • G5 dual 2.0 PCI-X firewire card?

Sorry if this is a more hardware-related posting but I know some of you Logic experts can help. I just purchased a dual 2.0 G5 and am loving it. I have a limited number of firewire ports available and would like to dedicate the internal bus to my Firepod, meaning for backups etc. I'd like to get a PCI-X card. One question -- I can't find any, are they available anywhere? Obsolete (already)? Thanks in advance!!

ah -- I also just found out that PCI-X is backward compatible with PCI but that the cards require a certain voltage. If anyone can provide links to cards that would work, I'd appreciate it, thanks in advance.

I wanted some advice on which monitors to get for a dual monitor setup and if its even possible to setup on my G5 or do I need a different video card?

    Memory: 2GB DDR2 SDRAM

Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks
    < Edited by Host >

It depends on which video card you have installed, though not much.  Whichever card you have installed, you should have two DVI outputs available.  With the minimum 256 Meg VRAM, you should be able to support two 1920x1080 monitors without a problem, and the "HD" monitors are getting very plentiful and dropping in price.  Were I to buy today, I would make sure to get an LED monitor, as that flavor should have a longer overall life than a florescent panel monitor.  You can find monitors in 23" dimensions for under $200 a pop, and more 27" monitors are showing up at a slightly bigger bite.

  • Yosemite - dual monitor; full screen option

I have a Mac Mini running the latest version of Yosemite. I have two monitors. Because I want to use Spaces, I do not have separate desktops on each monitor. My problem comes in when I click on a window "expand" button. When I do this the window expands to fill its current monitor. What is new with Yosemite (at least in my experience) is that all content on the other monitor (doesn't matter if it primary or not) is blanked out. Presumably the purpose of this is to allow someone to focus better on the task at hand. However, focus is not the only reason why someone would want to fill their current monitor's screen with a single window. It could just be used as a short-cut way to enlarge the current window.
I'd appreciate any suggestion as to how to work around this besides dragging the corner of each window to fill the monitor screen. And I'd recommend that if this behavior is as planned, that users have an option to [ignore | leave as is] the other monitor's content.
Thanks in advance for any reply.

I haven't seen this occur on my Macbook pro with secondary or triple monitors.  Is this happening with all fullscreen content (eg. YouTube)?  What browser and Flash Player Version are you using?  Also, is this a retina macbook?
