Yet another high cpu using flash issue

Salutations. What I'm about to tell you won't come to you as a surprise as there have been many similar topics discussed here. In fact, on the first page, there were two. So let's get on with it!
hp pavillion entertainment notebook dv6 e2170ee
windows 7 64bit
6gb ram
intel core i7 cpu q 720 @ 1.60 GHz    (never overclocked. don't know how to)
nvidia geforce gt 230m
firefox is on safe mode. kind of better than regular mode.
firefox waaaay better than chrome in handling flash. haven't tried it on ie. don't want to. i left ie8 at version 8
flash hardware accelration is off
firefox hardware accelaration is on
latest flash player enabled
latest shock player enabled
latest flash director enabled
latest firefox
no idea if my vents and cooling system work properly. read several posts about this issue being related to hardware.
i have updated my drivers using hp support assistant, driver detective, and windows update. wouldn't be surprised if there was a conflict with all this nvidia driver as well. went to the site. it detected my model and sent me the driver. had audio and video options in it.
while writing this post, the adobe tab + 4 flash tabs off the same site (youtube, younow, cam sites, etc) are open.
performance tab in taskbar says
flashplayer 15 *32bit (2 processes with the same name but diff cpu usage by the way. why 2?) is using 5%
firefox *32 bit is using 5%
audiodg.exe is nowhere to be found
now firefox and flashplayer keep alternating ofcourse. flash always ends up with higher cpu when everything breaks. i have noticed that even after closing ff, ff and flash are still in the processes table. they stay there for a bit. why?
ISSUE NUMBER 1: i can't play a video and have flash players on at the same time. I'd like to watch a movie and every now and then look to my other screen to see what's going on with the flash site. it can't be done. all is well at the beginning then it goes to hell. i have the latest free version of bsplayer and videolan. Yes vlc handles better but it all goes to hell in the end. sometimes the video won't even show on vlc; only audio
ISSUE NUMBER 2: i don't understand the logic behind the increase in cpu. if i have 6 tabs open all flash all is well. but at some point it just spikes up. so i always try to keep the number of flash tabs as low as possible. sometimes 4 are no issue but 5 are a big issue. sometimes closing a tab helps and sometimes it doesnt.
ISSUE NUMBER 3: audiodg starts using more than 2%. It can go up to 11 or 13 even. That shouldn't happen. I've been told that for it to go beyond 2 or even 3 means there's a conflict. I had trouble dealing with this issue. I don't know what or where the conflict is. So if there's anyone here that's good at this please contact me. Ill post a pic of device manager. For the sound, i have 4 nvideo and 1 idt audio codec. I cdon't know which to disable or uninstall. im thinking of unintalling every audio/video driver i hav and start from the beginning. BUT LETS NOT MAKE THIS ABOUT AUDIO/VIDEO CONFLICT
QUESTION 1: was there ever a time when this issue didn't exist? perhaps there's a "stable" version of ff or flash that don't cause this.
QUESTION 2: ive seen a lot of posts about this but I honestly can't remember any participants saying OH REALLY? ODD, I NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE BEFORE
QUESTION 3: isn't there some kind of tracer that can track the moment that it goes to hell? im sure there is but no one's mentioned it so far
QUESTION 4: would buying a new laptop solve this? I'd like to think not since the issue is flash not the capabilities of a laptop but i can't help but think that a better laptop will fix this. My laptop is 4 years old.
QUESTION 5: i don't know anything about multithreading or multiple cores handling a single process but if someone showed me how, would that resolve my issue?
MY WISH: for flash to coexist peacefully with human beings

Disabling Hardware Acceleration in Flash means that we're doing all of the processing on the CPU, instead of on the GPU.  The GPU is purpose-built for 3D graphics and video decoding and is far more power efficient.  Decoding H.264 video in software is very CPU intensive, which is why we made the huge investment to enable hardware acceleration on the vast majority of available desktop hardware. Running six CPU intensive tasks simultaneously (which is what you're doing by using six simultaneous tabs) is unsurprisingly going to tax your machine.
If you've disabled Hardware Acceleration because video wasn't working right or something, figuring out how to get that enabled (or moving to better hardware with good driver support) would solve the vast majority of what you're describing here.  If HP doesn't offer updated drivers, I'd recommend trying the corresponding Nvidia drivers, as OEMs aren't always motivated to pick up the latest fixes once a model is no longer generating new revenue for them.  The chipset manufacturers tend to provide longer support, but those drivers aren't officially supported by the OEM.
The architecture for Protected Mode for Firefox is a result of the fact that we've retrofitted a modern plug-in security approach to a legacy plug-in architecture.  As you've noticed, equivalent sandboxing in other major browsers is designed into their plug-in architectures, and is therefore more efficient.  We've made huge investments to support modern security architecture and always do our best to accommodate efforts from our partners in the browser space to further secure the browser.  You can find a detailed explanation of our approach to Firefox here: Inside Flash Player Protected Mode for Firefox
Firefox controls the instantiation and destruction of Flash instances.  You'll also notice that Firefox hangs out for a while after shutdown.  This is something that we're aware of, but it's beyond our control.
Flash doesn't have much to do with audiodg, except for the fact that it generates sound and uses the windows sound subsystem.  This article seems to present some reasonable advice in resolving issues with high CPU consumption from the sound subsystem.  Fix Audiodg.exe High CPU Usage in Windows 7 | Windows EXE Errors
Hardware accelerated video encoding is typically not available on consumer-grade hardware (primarily because of the difference in licensing models for encoding and decoding with popular commercial codecs), and therefore is done on the CPU.  The particular website chooses what codecs and bitrates are involved, and higher quality feed will consume more CPU.  It's also worth pointing out that not all video can be decoded in hardware.  We provide clear guidance to content providers on how to encode video so that it can be played back efficiently, it's ultimately up to the content provider to follow that advice.
So, long story short, each tab consumes resources.  Running a single tab is going to use less resources than running multiple tabs.  The latest version of Internet Explorer does some stuff to reduce resource consumption in tabs that you're not actively looking at.  We're discussing possibilities with the Chrome folks for doing the same thing in Chromium-based browsers.  Mozilla isn't interested in investing in browser plug-ins, so we don't expect to see the necessary browser-side improvements there.  The Chrome sandboxing model is more efficient that protected mode for Firefox, so tasks that require moving a lot of data (like streaming video) may use less CPU in Chrome.
To answer your questions specifically:
1.) There was a time before we supported multiple tabs, webcam streaming, H.264 video decoding and modern security sandboxing.  I wouldn't recommend using those versions.
2.) There are a few posts about this, but we have ~1.5 billion users.  The majority of the very small number of folks relative to our install base are complaining their machines are overheating, which is a symptom of an ineffective cooling system.
There's nothing magic about Flash that causes it to somehow superheat the CPU.
There was a time before tabs, where people didn't normally run 5-50 browser windows.  Websites also got much more complex, and the security threats got far more serious and complex.
Playing video as a plug-in in the browser as opposed to something like VLC is inherently less efficient, as pretty much each pixel and packet gets passed through the browser before it gets to the OS or drivers.
All of these things require additional processing.  The resources on your computer are still finite, and there is an upper limit to the number of simultaneous tabs you can use.
At some point, you come to a juncture where you need to decide between throwing more hardware at the problem, or using less tabs simultaneously.
Also, most laptops have power saving CPUs, so they'll ratchet the clock speed down to save battery.  You might want to check your power settings to make sure you're running at the CPU's full capacity when plugged in.
3.) Not that would generate anything really useful.
4.) Possibly.  You actually already have a multi-core machine.  I think you'd get more bang for your buck by enabling hardware acceleration and switching browsers.
5.) You already have a multi-core machine that we support.
Your Wish: We're constantly addressing security issues identified through our own testing, emerging research and intelligence from our partners in academia, government and industry.  We're also looking for opportunities to tune the player, but the reality is that Intel, Nvidia and ATI (and a long list of others, in addition to Adobe) have tuned Flash Player extensively for their hardware.  We work closely with the Internet Explorer and Chrome teams to continue to make the Flash experience better, and are always happy to work with the Firefox team should they decide that they're interested in plug-ins and the desktop browser again.  At the end of the day, Flash is just a low-level runtime.  It's just as possible to write inefficient ActionScript as it is to write inefficient C++, and while we provide some fantastic tooling for profiling your Flash content, it's up to individual content providers to write efficient code.  It's really difficult to find opportunities to make generic optimizations that don't break a percentage of the hundreds of millions of sites published with Flash content.
I'm actually still not clear on what the problem you're experiencing is.  All software running on your machine that's actively processing something is going to use a non-zero percentage of CPU time.  The symptoms you describe indicate that Flash consumes 5% of the CPU, which is totally reasonable.  I'm guessing that I don't have the complete story.

  • Yet another MacBook Pro with display issues (NVdia chip)

Exactly one year and 1 week after purchase, my video controller started freaking out. So just 1 week out of warranty, my display started flickering, blinking, showing garbled clumps of pixels and got progressively worse over the last week until, now, it locks up and/or reboots after about 15 minutes of uptime.
    I have:
    - installed all updates, including firmware
    - reset PRAM
    - re-seated RAM
    - replaced RAM
    - used SMC FanControl to try and keep the GPU cool
    - parked the MacBook in front of the fan/air conditioner in an attempt to keep the GPU cool
    - ran the Hardware Test, which returned a faulty video controller
None of the above have had any positive effect whatsover.
I've dug through these forums and hunted around the rest of the net for more info. Every symptom points to the NVidia GeForce issue. It seemed to be heat related. Maybe it was at first (even though max temps were never over 180 F), but after just one more day it doesn't seem to matter anymore. The machine is just FUBAR.
Tomorrow, I'm taking it in to the Apple store for service. Everything I've read here tells me it'll be at $1,000 logic board replacement since I'm a week out of warranty. Needless to say, if I come home tomorrow with a $1,000 receipt AND no laptop I'm going to be pretty upset.
What really concerns me is that, if I have to get the logic board replaced, they'll just put in yet another faulty board with another NVdia chip that will do the same thing all over again. There has to be another option, short of just getting a new iMac or tower with an ATI card instead. What else can I do?

http://noizesurge.com/downloads/gpu2.jpg - incidentally my computer had completely frozen at this point.
I'm pretty sure from observing these types of glitches that this is a hardware fault. I shall ring Apple on Monday and hopefully they can pick it up and sort it all out! Does anyone know roughly how long a turnaround is in the UK?
Yes, your video controller is toast. That's exactly how mine looked.
Just to make certain, run the Hardware Test:
    - Put in DVD 1 that came with your MacBook Pro.
    - Shut down
    - Restart, holding the D key
    - You'll be put into test mode, run the default test (no need to run the robust test at this stage)
I'm betting it will return a message that looks like: "4VDC/1/40000003: videocontroller"
If so, your logic board will have to be replaced.
The Apple Store I went to (Michigan Ave, Chicago) told me it would take 5-7 days. I'm not sure what UK times would be like, but I'd expect a little longer.
    bikemonkey wrote:
Incidentally, people are saying that they've have logic boards and what not replaced only for the problem to reoccur. Does this mean nVidia haven't properly fixed the issue?
Correct. Nvidia hasn't done a thing about this (that I'm aware of), and Apple seems to be putting the same logic boards with the faulty Nvidia chips back in.
Until we see a new/refreshed line of MacBook Pro's, I think we're stuck.

  • ITunes 11.0.4 - high CPU use

    Hello,
since I upgraded to Mountain Lion 10.8.4. and iTunes to 11.0.4 a couple of days ago, iTunes keeps fooling around using up to 130% of my CPU (how is that even possible?!) when playing music. As soon as I pause the music, the CPU-use goes back to >1%. Before the upgrades I had a big library with over 170GB of music (no only a few albums) and no problems using iTunes whatsoever.
    I run a mid-2010 13" MBP with OSX 10.8.4, 2,4 GhZ Intel Core 2 Duo and 4GB of RAM.
    Thanks in advance!

Yessss! i' ve finally found the issue !
The problem was with "smart play lists" i dunno how you call it in english, but i' ve created a long time ago a smart playlist named "unread" because the "all random" function is not so much random for me, as they play some tracks more often than others...
With as criteria " numbers of play = 0 " so one title is played one time!
By using my brain as good as i can, i told myself " what itunes do when a song ends and then go to the next?"
It wrote something on the smart play list or something like that
Then test from "play all random" = no more issue !
Then deleted my smart play list and recreate one identical = problem solved !

  • Mail has high cpu use

I have searched the discussions and tried all the suggestions and am not having any luck decreasing the cpu use of mail. As soon as I open the program it starts increasing the cpu usage until it hits high 80's. I eventually have to quit just to quiet down the computer due to increase in fan noise.
I have trashed the preference file. Rebuilt all the mailboxes. Emptied the trash. Run disk utility.
I can not think of any reason for this to just have started happening. I have not done any new installs. Does any one have any suggestions?
    Thanks...Lenny

    So...what does this mean?
It means there is something about your user account that is the cause of your CPU usage for Mail, not Mail itself. Did you install any software just before this started happening? If so what was it, specifically? Try this to see if it makes any difference:
Quit all applications and use Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions. Ignore any messages about SUID or ACL; it means nothing. Quit when it's done. Next, go to ~/Library/Caches/Mail and delete the contents of that folder, then use Get Info to Lock the folder.
Also, if you have any Bundles installed for Mail at ~/Library/Mail, disable them and then restart Mail to see if the problem continues.

  • [SOLVED] high CPU and freezing issues

    Greetings,
While I don't claim to be an expert at these things, I'm no newbie either... at least as far as computers go. I admit there are still many things I need to learn about linux, but that's all part of the fun. Anyways on to the point of this topic.
After the power supply on my main pc died and shorted out the mother board with it, I have been forced to use an older computer. It is a computer that I know works as it was used by my wife as a desktop when she didn't feel like using her laptop. Odd.. I know, but hey, whatever she wants she gets .
It is an older pc, a compaq presario 5423. It is running an intel p4 1.6 gz processor and has an nvidia geforce 2 mx agp video card. Ever since the last xorg update that refuses to work with nvidia-96xx, I've been using the nv driver. I have tried briefly the other one (nouvelo or however it's spelled) and while it worked it seemed to slow my computer down and produce some odd effects like screen freezes and whatnot. It was running two 256 MB ram sticks, I replaced them with the two 512's from my main (dead) pc. I have the two hd's from my main pc on it, properly set up (I basically resinstalled arch so that I was sure it was done right, and just because I love the arch linux installation process, it is awesome IMO). I've been running this PC since.. October I believe... whenever it was that I submitted that e17 screenshot... I think that was October.
Here is the issue I am having. The CPU loves to max out.. ie.. reach 100% almost instantly. Open up a browser *poof* 100%, making me wait a moment before I can do anything else. Open up a few tabs.. *poof* 100%... and frequent freezes.  It doesn't seem to matter what I am running, doing, using... it always happens. This happens in pekwm, fluxbox, openbox, e17, wmaker, firebox, twindy, fvwm, even the almighty awesome. Yes, those are all wm's I've tried. Forget trying to run KDE (I did, it loads... but that's about it. I had to hard restart because of total freeze-up). I've tried all kinds of browsers, firefox, chrome, iron, midori, auroa, konq... Midori hates me, the others are too heavy... only Chrome and Iron (both basically the same) work, but still experience the freezes and the like. Uzbl laughed at me as even trying to start it caused a massive CPU spike. I know, hard to believe.. which leaves me thinking there is a serious problem.
MPD spikes the CPU by 20% easily each song change. Googles even more so. Forget the heavyweights like amarok and exile. Pidgin spikes it when loading initially but evens out. Terminal spikes it only when compiling, updating, or building from AUR... or installing a package with pacman.
Here's the thing, when my wife used it before, using LXDE with Open Box and only a total of 512 MB she never experienced this. This box came with Windows XP which ran fine.. somewhat slow but fine. So this all leaves me thinking, something is just wrong.  I am wondering if maybe bad RAM? Maybe the thing is just trying to give up the ghost? Before going and pulling out RAM though I want to see what you guys think.
Here's what HTOP has to say...
CPU(while writing this post): 36.8% (in pekwm!)
Mem: 187/1009 MB (all bars are lite up...)
Swp: 1/2863MB (already tapping into swap?)
    Tasks: 128 total, 1 running
    Load average: 0.26 0.08 0.06
So yeah, I researched online.. this processor is supposed to be able to even run KDE fine. So something has to be off. Any ideas?
Last edited by mythus (2009-11-20 12:13:53)

Well right before I changed drivers back to nvidia-96xx, I did a pacman -Syu check.. there was a new xorg update waiting for me. So I updated and switched back to nvidia-96xx driver.
Still having the fun CPU issues so this must not be an nv driver thing itself.
    free -m provides the following...
total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
    Mem:          1009        606        403          0         60        387
    -/+ buffers/cache:        158        851
    Swap:         2863          0       2863
Therefore it would seem that memory issue is not the problem.
Watching the cpu spike just because I type is very unnerving. Heck just running htop did a spike. Poor old computer... Just for S&G I tried once again to load kde. Neopunk killed it with it's massive cpu usage + x trying to match it. What can I say.. X was jealousy, there was no way X was going to let neopunk use more CPU than it.
Ah.. so nerve racking. I've been working on this for almost two months now. I'll look and she what distros I got lieing around.. been awhile since I burned one and not really wanting too.. had no desire since arch is what I want. But I suppose I do need to compare to see if it is something else like X causing this.
I'll do that in a bit.. I'll wait a moment incase anyone else has another suggestion. Give me time to get off my butt and do some honey-do's for my wife.

  • High CPU with Flash video

I'm just wondering if anyone can shed any light on why my Macbook gets all hot and bothered whenever I play Flash video (i.e. from YouTube and others). After only a few seconds of streaming, the fans rev up and the CPU usage gets up pretty high, sometimes almost to 100%. This can't be normal, can it?
Anyone have any ideas for remedying this?

    Hi Glueslabs,
In addition to my post here is quote from Eric Kracinski:
Safari is one of those apps that eats up RAM and CPU cycles the longer you leave it open. Closing it out every now and again should free up some of the RAM that it has allocated to it,
    taken from :
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4251872&#4251872
And I agree too, the longer I use Safari with all streaming video or leave it open and idle, will trigger the fans to kick in.
    Good Luck.
ps: Quote use without permission from Eric Kracinski,..
Sorry Eric, can I use your quote for this...

  • High Cpu usage flash 11 while videobroadcasting

    Good day,
in flash 10 my avg cpu load was 50-60% while broadcasting 7-8 websites at the same time
in betatesting flash11 this has gone a little bit up but was still within margins
when the definitive version came out, i am only able to broadcast 3 sites with a CPU load of 90%
please tell me what i can do to lower cpu usage.

The linux version of flash has no hardware acceleration for most (it has mediocre acceleration if you have an nvidia card that supports vdpau), so it uses lots of cpu. On my laptop with a core i5 2.53 ghz, a 720 flash vid will use 20-30% cpu. The same video played in a native application like mplayer will use like 5% (and I don't even have any video acceleration enabled in mplayer because vaapi is buggy for me)
litemotiv wrote:Also check what you have set in /etc/adobe/mms.cfg
I recall reading somewhere that the mms.cfg tweak to force hw accel no longer works in flash 11, but I cant seem to find the source on that now.

How's the light on your power cord, on the receiving (your Mac) side? If it shows green, don't sweat, it means it is charging alright, no matter what the battery meter in Windows says: battery management is largely firmware-run on a MacBook Pro, since it's not exactly supposed to run another OS than Mac OS X. If the light shows yellow/orange, then for the sake of experiment, let it run until your battery dies. If it does at all.

  • High CPU using process slowed down after a period of time

    Hi,
I am running a Finite element commercial solver, our tipical installations are with windows server 2008 but now we were force to move to windows server 2012.
When we launch the solver, which may be working with up to 20 cores, the CPU usage remains consistent for about 40 minute/1 hour then drops to the usage of only one core without having completed the process, which complete several hours later.
We already tried putting the power management at High performance, but didn't solve.
Are there any suggestion regarding where to look at?
    Thanks
    Raffaello

    Hi,
First, please make sure your hardware support windows server 2012. I’m not sure what “Finite element commercial solver” is. So I just treat it as a kind of software. Is there
any compatibility with the software with the new OS?
Process Monitor may help address the issue.

    Hope this helps.

  • Yosemite Mail.app High CPU Use

Since upgrading to Yosemite, Mail.app frequently spikes multiple cores for an extended period of time. Even background mail checking spikes the CPU load.

Seeing the same issue. The problem, in particular, relates to email sent to me from another Apple Mail user via Exchange. I can view the email on my iPhone or iPad, but not in Apple Mail.
I think, from what I can see in the crash logs, it relates to parsing attachments. (which may just be things like email sig blocks)

  • Yet another 10.5.3 Permissions Issue

    Howdy.
After updating to 10.5.3, my iTunes library, which is located on an external drive, claimed i did not have permissions to say, download new videos or podcasts and what not. After some research, I found that Changing the permissions on the iTunes Library Folder tends to fix the problem. My issue is that I cannot change them. At all. When I "Get Info" my external drive, it shows that My account has Read/Write Access, but the User "Everyone" Has only Read Only privileges. The lock next to this box is greyed out, and clicking on it does nothing. There is a box at the bottom that reads, "Ignore Ownership on this Volume," and it is checked, but I cannot uncheck it; again, greyed out. Any way to force a permissions change to this drive? This only seemed to happen after updating to 10.5.3 through Software Update. The only thing I haven't tried yet is reinstalling 10.5.3 from a Combo Updater.

When you open the Get Info window for the drive you should see a lock icon in the lower right corner of the window. Click on it, and you should get a dialog in which you authenticate by entering your admin password. You should then be able to uncheck the box to ignore permissions on the drive. Normal drive permissions are:
    system with r/w privileges
    admin with r/w privileges
    everyone read-only
If the drive is only used for data storage you may see different default users such as yourself rather than system with r/w privileges.

  • High CPU using on transcoding - Build Progres not responding

I have a PAL Widescreen Encore project. Most assets are from dynamic links with Premiere sequences. The Premiere sequences are of Matrox HD 1080i50 type. The material is HD422 and HDCAM EX. One timeline is about 3:30h and the other about 0:20h.
The DVD is authored and I want to build the disc to a folder. I start the building process and the Build Progress dialog comes up. It shows that it is transcoding. After a while, the progress bar for the transcoding of the ...prproj(Video) file stops moving. The bar shows about 10% of the total length. When I click on the Build Progress Window it shows "not responding".
The CPUs are almost always between 97% and 100%. Every few minutes CPU goes shortly down and then up again. Memory using was most of the time at about 11GB of 12B total. Shortly ago it dipped to 8GB. Encore-exe uses between 92-97% of the CPU time. PremierePro.exe uses about 1-8%.
I would like to know if this is normal? I wonder if the render will finish some time or if Encore just hangs. I especially never had the issue that the Build Process dialog was not responding or updating. Could it be that the progress bar will update after the long sequence is rendered, but not before? I tried to have the project rendered last night already. The computer was running for about 7 hours and the bar was as now stuck at the beginning. I then rendered all the sequences from Premiere with AME directly into MPEG-2. It toook about 6 hours for the complete material.
I think I have an i7CPU with 4 CPUs and 4 Hyperthreaded CPUs, NVDIA Quadro 4000, 12 GB RAM, Win 7, ASUS board, CS5 Master Suite.

When I originally tried to export directly from Premiere my 3:03h long footage was extimated to render for 36 hours! I expected Max Bit Depth to cause this delay. Because my only transitions are fades I turned it off. The render was done in about 4 hours, which was reasonable. Since the render via dynamic link in Encore was not working properly, I tried to export the footage again directly from Premiere, because I originally forgot to export the audio as Dolby. This time even the direct export from Premiere was estimated at 36 hours having Max Bit Depth turned off. This puzzled me. When I expoerted the first time I did a direct export. This time I tried to use the queue. I exported again uaing the Export command and voila the export is estimated at about 4 hours.
Why does it take about 9 times longer to render using the queue instead doing a direct export from Premiere? I know this question is pobably better placed in the Premiere forum, but it for sure is also the source for the long render times doing the render with the transcode command in Encore. Searching on the Internet I found this:
    http://www.dvinfo.net/forum/adobe-creative-suite/491220-export-vs-queue-great-difference-p erformance-2.html
I have to re-read it when my brain is rested. At the moment I don't fully understand why apparently CUDA is not used on Queue rendering on my system.
Some general insight can be found in the Adobe blog: http://blogs.adobe.com/premiereprotraining/2010/10/scaling-in-premiere-pro-cs5.html and in http://blogs.adobe.com/premiereprotraining/2010/07/maximum_dimensions_in_premiere.html.
It still doesn't explain the big difference between Queue and Export on my system.

  • Yet another iSync/10.4.3 issue

    Hi people -
I see I am not the only one having probs with iSync (by a long shot!) - mine is this:
    - I experienced, like so many others, that the upgrade hosed iSync, which began to crash on launch. Now, I have read something about resetting devices by way of a lot of steps but I have no desire to do so; there are just some things on my phone (Sony-Ericsson T610) I do not want to mess with - so my approach was "the other way": Erase and reinstall iSync, V2.1.
But no-no, the installer keeps thinking I have a newer version installed and refuses...
There is not a trace of iSync anywhere I can find but the system thinks it's there - so much so in fact that it claims to be able to sync from the System Settings>.mac-pane (and claims the update was in fact performed via a "latest update" date and time).
But maybe this way it doesn't actually use iSync at all?
So what do I do? Can I sweep whatever file it is that convinces the system of iSync's presence, and if so, which one and where?
(BTW - the iSync icon in the menu bar is also still there, I cannot remove it since it's enabled from the iSync>Preferences menu - why does it not go away when the application is gone?)
    Hoping for help...! :o)
    Jesper W.

The Sync Status icon in the menubar also reports the status of .Mac Sync, and can be disabled by launching System Preferences, selecting the .Mac pane, pressing the Sync tab and unchecking the option to Show status in menu bar.
With regard to removing iSync 2 or later, send me an electronic mail message and I'll reply with a copy of iSync Uninstall, a utility to completely remove any version of iSync. Originally intended to remove the initial beta release before installing iSync, it works under Mac OS X 10.4 and later, but has been removed as a download from the Apple software downloads area.
You'll then have to either perform an archive and install of Mac OS X 10.4 or use Pacifist to extract and install iSync 2 - which is otherwise not available as a package - on your original Mac OS X 10.4 Install or Upgrade DVD. You can then update it to version 2.1 using either the Software Update mechanism or the downloadable iSync 2.1 updater, then reapply the Mac OS X 10.4.3 Update to update iSync to the latest version.
