    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It may just be the preference pane. Right click on the Pref Pane in System Preferences and "Remove".
    Is it interfering anywhere else?
If the app is not in your Applications folder and it exists, look in the Utilities folder.
    Alternatively, try AppCleaner

  • You can't open Mail, Contacts & Calendars preferences because it doesn't work on an Intel-based Mac.

I updated my Mac to Mavericks and after that, I can't open the Mail, Contacts and Calendar preferences.
Every time I try, I get the following message:
"You can’t open Mail, Contacts & Calendars preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac."
I tried this workaround from the Mountain Lion thread (https://discussions.apple.com/message/21303574#21303574) but it didn't worked.
Further I deleted all files in the Library Preferences folder, but it didn't helped also.
    Can anyone help me please?

    Hi Michael,
I had the same problem. And I found a fix.
I noticed that on a different system running Mavericks without any problems, the preference pane isn't called 'Mail, Contacts & Calendars' anymore, it's now called 'Internet accounts'. The fact that it's still called by the old name on your system, means it somehow wasn't replaced while updating to Mavericks.
So the cure is pretty easy:
On a different Mavericks system, go to /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ and copy the file InternetAccounts.prefPane. Take it to the system you're trying to fix, and paste the prefPane file in the same directory. Reboot, and it should all work fine. At least it did in my case.
    Cheers

    Please help,
After installing the 10.5.7 update, I can not access my sharing settings in System Preferences. It says "You cannot open Sharing preferences because it doesn't work on an Intel-based Mac."
    Any Ideas?

Install the combo updater. Somehow, the Intel slice of the binary got stripped out on your machine (and/or the binary patching failed in a way that corrupted the relevant part of the Mach-O header). Don't ask me how that would happen, but apparently, it did.

  • Preference panes - cannot open because it doesn't work on an intel-based mac.

Just updated to Mavericks and was checking out "System Preferences". Of the 37 items I have here 19 will not open. The error messages I get are alternately:

"You can’t open <....> preferences because it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac."
(<....> = name of preference pane)
Clicking on a pane will give one message, then, once "OK" has been clicked, clicking again on the same pane will give the second. There does not seem to be any correlation between when a particular message will occur, but it is always the same panes with the issue.

I had the same issue after restoring a cloned drive with Mavericks.
    Repairing permissions didn't help.
Show invisible files and go to /Applications - you will see a bunch of corrupt application starting with .0
    For example i had
    .0Messages
    .0System Preferences
    .0Time machine
The wrong System Preferences was getting launched when calling it from the menu - the corrupt one.
I deleted them and all is good.
Also if this doesn't work, select Applications/System preferences and call Get Info from the File menu and make sure 32 bit mode is not activated.

    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5:  Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows:  In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
    /var/db/receipts/
    2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.

    Hi,
You mentioned you tried some steps but I'm not sure what they are, you may try my suggestion to resolve this issue, follow these steps:
    Click Start, right-click Computer, click
Properties, and then click Advanced system settings.
On the Advanced tab, click Environment Variables.
Locate and select the __COMPAT_LAYER variable, and then click Edit.
Set the value of the __COMPAT_LAYER variable to EnableThemes. Or, delete the __COMPAT_LAYER variable.
If the issue persists, we can troubleshoot this problem in Clean Boot to determine whether background programs are interfering with PowerPoint:

  • I keep getting the error message: " You can't open the application "%@" because it may be damage or incomplete" when I try to install a software that I purchased.

I have a typing software that I bought a while ago. I had installed it on an old pc but I just bought a macbook and I'd like to install it onto the new macbook, as I no longer use the old pc. When I open the installer, I get the error message: " You can't open the application "%@" because it may be damage or incomplete"
Does anybody know if this is fixable or if I need to just buy a new disk?
    Thanks!!!

I copy pasted this from the developers website for the minimum requirements of your device: Macintosh® OS X 10.4 – 10.5, PowerPC G4, G5 or Intel Core Duo processor, 800 MHz processor or higher, 256 MB RAM, CD/DVD-ROM drive, 300 MB free hard disk space, Video card with 32 MB of video RAM, 1024 x 768 24-bit color display, Speakers, keyboard & mouse.
Does a macbook pro meet these requirements?

Nice. Shall I say goodbye to my treasured iPhoto library? What happened?
I did just upgrade my iPhone to OS 5. Could that be related somehow?
    Help!

    1. Back up your iPhoto Library - you should always have a back up anyway.
    Most Simple Back Up
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
    Slightly more complex:
Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically. Examples of such apps: Chronosync or DejaVu . But are many others. Search on MacUpdate
    2. Reinstall
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2c: on 10.7 they're at
    /private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
If you purchased it on the App Store you can find it in your Purchases List.

I have an iMac with Lion 10.7.4 and tonight I tried to download and install a Maxstor drive from the internet, since then the following notice has appeared on my screen at approximately 6 second intervals.  “you can’t open application NotificationExec because PowerPC applications are no longer supported”  I have removed the Maxtor manager via the waste basket but the notices keep appearing.  Is there a way for me to stop these as they make my iMac virtually unusable or is this a virus?

none of the above worked for me....this worked after hours of messing around with Libraries, deleting things, etc.
Absolutely frustrated by the same problem, just lost 3 hours of my day trying to uninstall after getting the same error message. The ONLY thing that worked for me was going to the following Maxtor (Seagate) URL:
    http://knowledge.seagate.com/articles/en_US/FAQ/199931en
I downloaded their "remove maxtor sw.zip" file
Click here to download the remove_maxtor_sw.zip file and store it on your system's desktop.

  • Error message: 'you can't open the application because the Classic environment is no longer supported'

I get the error message 'you can't open the application because the Classic environment is no longer supported', when will this issue be fixed? I need to use a program to analyse videos called 'J watcher' that is vital for my thesis. It worked in the last operating system but refuses to open in this one. When will this issue be fixed/what can I do about it?

Is there any way to fix this?
    Yes, but it's not easy.
I've only tested this on Snow Leopard, but I think it will work in Lion. You need to have Java installed, which it's not by default in Lion. Since I'm not using Lion myself, I can't tell you how to do that.
Download the Java/Mac version (1.0) of the application from JWatcher Downloads. You'll get a zip archive. Expand it. Now you have an application called "JWatcher_V1.0." This is only the installer. It won't run, because it has PowerPC-only version of the Java application stub.
Select the line of text below in your browser and copy it to the clipboard:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/Resources/MacOS
In the Finder, select Go > Go to Folder... from the menu bar (this menu may be slightly different in Lion.) Paste the clipboard contents into the text box. You should now see a folder with two files in it, one of which is named "JavaApplicationStub." Leave that window open.
Now right-click on the icon of JWatcher_V1.0 and select "Show Package Contents" from the contextual menu. A new Finder window opens. Open the folder called "MacOS". Inside that folder is a file also named "JWatcher_V1.0". Move it to the Trash. Drag the file JavaApplicationStub to where it was. Rename the file (it will be copied, not moved) JWatcher_V1.0. Close the Finder window.
Now double-click the installer. It should launch. Install the application wherever you choose. You're not done yet.
The installer creates a folder named, once again, "JWatcher_V1.0". Inside it is an application. That, too, is named "JWatcher_V1.0". Select it, and do exactly the same thing you did before with the installer: replace the binary inside with a copy of JavaApplicationStub.
You should now be able to run it.
