You can't use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac

I just installed 10.6 and all seemed well until I tried to load Mail. I got this response
"You can't use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac You have Mail 3.5".
I successfully reinstalled 10.6 and I also reloaded the apps that were contained in another folder on the CD. I get the same message every time I try to load the Mail program. I deleted the "mail plist" file and that did not work. So I recovered my old one from Time Machine. Still dead!
My poor wife is so frustrated that she is now using my machine!!! HELP PLEASE!

I successfully reinstalled 10.6 and I also reloaded the apps that were contained in another folder on the CD.
Why would you "reload" any apps? They should have been installed when you installed 10.6. Where exactly did you reload them from?
So I recovered my old one from Time Machine.
...which undoubtedly still contained the old copy of Mail from your last Leopard backup, and not the current version of Mail that should have been installed with 10.6.
What you need to do is reinstall the appropriate version of Mail from your Snow Leopard install disk. You can install one specific program from the install disk using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com> - though, check carefully to make sure it's been cleared for use with the Snow Leopard install disk!
Whether that will fix your problem or not, I don't know, as I don't know what exactly you've done. It sounds like you've done a lot of things you should not have done, mixing components of your older system into your newer system. It is entirely possible you will need to reinstall the entire system.

  • Got message... you can't use this version of the application mail with this version of Max OS X, after i upgraded operating system to MAC OSA X Snow leopard.  How do I get my Mail?

Hi ...just upgraded my Macbook pro to Mac OSX snow leopard and when I tried to look at my mail, I got this message "You can't use this version of the application mail with this version of MAC OS X".  What do I do now to look at my mail and receive new mail?

After updating make sure you repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • "You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version...

I recently needed to replace my hard drive and now when I try to open the Mail application I get the following message: "You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X."
    Any help is appreciated.

    ANSWERING MY OWN POST:
I have tried reinstalling Mail from my Snow Leopard upgrade disk directly and tried it using Pacifist. Neither worked because both simply reinstalled version 4.0. Fortunately, I have a MacBook Pro and it has version 4.1. I copied this directly, which was not ideal (it was quite confused about my mailboxes), but it worked.
The problem is that +Software Update+ did not detect the old version of Mail and Apple does not provide a direct way (that I could find) of downloading the latest version. Each time I downloaded Mail from Apple, it was version 4.0.

  • You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version OSX

I just installed 10.5.8 (9L30) via Software Update and now my Mail doesn't work. Instead, I get a dialog box that says "You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X." When I run it out of Terminal from /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail it runs fine, even though it is Version 3.5 (which is what shows up when I do Get Info on the Mail application in the Applications folder). This is really poor, Apple. This is basic stuff -when you upgrade the OS you have to make sure all the Apps work. How are you going to fix this?

    Thomas A Reed wrote:
Apple obviously are stupid enough to release an update that broke mail..
Then how do you explain all the people saying they've had no problems with the update? (Oh, and "Apple are"???)
Not everyone had the problem. Good for them. More than one person had the problem - and perhaps even more will experience it. That means there is a hole in the update process - i.e. something does not work properly in all situations. Apple is not God - they stuff up sometimes, innit? Stop defending them.
No matter whether you use a Mac or Windows machine, you need to do some basic maintenance from time to time to keep things working smoothly. Macs, overall, tend to need less, but you still need to check the hard drive from time to time, and you definitely never want to install an OS update if there's a chance you've got hard drive problems.
So if that's the case, why design an "automatic" Software Update utility that does not do a check of HD integrity if it is so vital to do such a check before installing an OS upgrade? Does that make any sense? Where do Apple recommend such a check prior to installing an OS upgrade? It's not immediately obvious do the average user. Apple have gone out of their way to make claims like "you never have to defrag a Mac". They don't mention anything about HD checks. If it's so fundamental, why not? Is it unreasonable to think that a company that prides itself on good design would think of this?
Thank you for the link for the consolidated update. That fixed it - except that it should have worked first go from the auto updater.

  • You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Ma

My hardrive died so I got it replaced and since I bought my macbook on ebay I have no Installation discs so got a friend to install leopard - everything so far seems ok but when I click Mail this comes up -'You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X.'. Any ideas? Ive ran software update and its all up to scratch..

    Greetings,
You seem to have a conflict somewhere, and it looks like you have a prior version of Mail that doesn't work with Leopard, along with the Leopard version of Mail. What version was on the Mac when you bought it, and where did the version of Leopard come from, exactly (was it a retail boxed version, or a version that shipped with another model of laptop)? Be very specific, as it does make a difference.

  • TS1572 you can use this version of the application mail with this version of mac osx

Cannot use this version" alert appears when opening application mail with this version of mac OS X, we seem to have lost our mail and now we get this message.

Make sure the 4.5 only is in the /Applications folder alone and not inside any enclosing folder, then run the update again. /Applications is inside the main Macintosh HD folder, not in your Home Folder, if you even have one there. Move the other Mail to the Trash for now, but don't empty it yet.
    Link for the update.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586
If that doesn't work, move both Mails to the Trash (don't empty yet) and run both updates, the 10.6.8 Combo update (the link for that is in the Apple article) and then the Security update again.

  • Can't use this version of the application Mail with this Version of Mac OS X

I have update to Lion but am receiving this error message when I try to open Mail from the Applications folder. I am told that I have Mail 4.2. I have tried to update softwareand am receive the message that there is no updates. I have tried to repair disk permissions (as some forums have suggested). That has not helped and I am now stuck on how to go forward.
In olden days, I would probably have tried to resinstall the programme. But I have no idea how to do this with Lion since I do not have an install disk.

Run Mail from your Applications folder instead of the Dock. You may have copy of Mail 4.2 that was moved out of the Applications folder but is still tied to the Dock icon.

  • When I try to open iPhoto (9.2.1) it says 'You can't use this version of the application iPhoto with this version of OS X.  All my photos are on there.  Please help.  Thank you

When I try to open iPhoto (9.2.1) it says 'You can't use this version of the application iPhoto with this version of OS X.  All my photos are on there.  Please help.  Thank you.

Did you upgrade to a new MacOS X version? Then you need to update iPhoto as well.
Only iPhoto 9.6 is compatible with MacOS X 10.10 Yosemite.  Update from the Mac App Store.
Backup your iPhoto library, if you do not have a current backup.
Launch the App Store, click the "Store" menu, and sign in with your current AppleID.
Check the "Updates" tab of the App Store for an iPhoto update and run the update.
When you laugh iPhoto after the update, it will warn you, that the library needs upgrading, That may take a while.
Just in case that you see a warning, that the update is not possible because of an error message: "This update is not available for this Apple ID either because it was bought by a different user or the item was refunded or cancelled."
Uninstall iPhoto by deleting it from the Applications folder, but do not empty the Trash, so you can put iPhoto back, if need be.
Launch the App Store, click the "Store" menu, and sign in with your current AppleID.
Open the main page "Featured" of the App Store and search for iPhoto.
If iPhoto is listed as "Free", click the "Free" button to buy it with your current AppleID.
If it is not showing as free, there is no help but contacting the App Store Support to sort out the AppleID. Use this link: http://www.apple.com/support/mac/app-store/contact/

  • You cannot use this version of the application iCa with this version of Mac OS x

Bought a macbook pro from a friend- running 10.5.8. Could not find iCal in the Apps folder. Researched on line and it sounded like I needed to reinstall it from the disk. I did from the original os x disk and when I tried to open it, received the following message:
you cannot use this version of the application iCa with this version of Mac OS x
I have two disk for version 10.2. Neither disk offers "optional installs" but the second has "AdditionalApplications.pkg" but doen not install iCal at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. That brings up a whole new question- can I run 10.6 on my macbook? The specs are below:
    Model Name:
    MacBook Pro 15"
      Model Identifier:
    MacBookPro1,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core Duo
      Processor Speed:
    2 GHz
      Number Of Processors:
    1
      Total Number Of Cores:
    2
      L2 Cache:
    2 MB
      Memory:
    2 GB
Was told at Apple Store that it would run terribly slow.

  • I just ran the updates for my MacBook Pro and now my iphoto will not open.  It says "You can't use this version of the application "iphoto" with this version of os x.  You have "iphoto 9.2.3

I just ran my updates for my MacBook Pro and now my iphoto won't open. I get a pop up that say's You can't use this version of the applicaton IPhoto with this version of os x.  You have iphoto 9.2.3.

This screenshot shows which previous versions of iPhoto are compatible with Mavericks.  It also indicates which versions qualify for a free upgrade to iPhoto 9.5.1 and which require a purchase:
Note 1:  every day more users are reporting problems with iPhoto 8.1.2 so I've included it in the non compatible category.
Note 2:  If your previous version of iPhoto was iPhoto 7 (08) or earlier you'll need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader 1.1 application on the library before opening it with iPhoto 9.5.1.

  • HT1338 When I click on the iPhoto icon, this message pops up; "You can't use this version of the application iPhoto with this version of Mac OS X." This started happening after I applied the update for iPhoto. How do I fix this?

I installed the update for iPhoto and now iPhoto won't open. Help!

Have you tried deleting the plist from the Library folder?
If this doesn't work, you could import the old version of iPhoto version of iPhoto from Time Machine and try the update again.

  • You cannot use the application "Mail" with this version of Mac OS X

I get the above message when clicking on "Mail" on my backup drive. Could that be because I did not specifically upgrade my backup drive from Tiger to Leopard?
Hope this is an easy one to answer. Thanks

yes, most probably that is an old version of Mail - i.e. Tiger - and is not compatible with Leopard. You would need to replace it with the newer Leopard version of Mail
    hope this helps

  • Upadated iphoto and result is i can't open it, it says "you can't use this version of the application iphoto with this version of Mac OS X. You have mac os x 10.7.3. the application requires mac os x 10.7.5 or later.

after upadting iphoto it is asking me to get the latest version of mac os x, but can i get back to the older version of iphoto? or is there a way to solve it without upgrading to mac os x 10.7.5 or later.

If you have 10.7.3 then updating to 10.7.5 is free.
