'You cannot use the application ical.app with this version of Mac OS X'
When I first upgraded to 10.5 ical and calculator both crashed when starting and now after upgrading to 10.5.1 I get the following message - 'You cannot use the application ical.app with this version of Mac OS X'
This is only on my G4 powermac. No problem with Intel MacBook.
Are you, by any chance, one of "those people" that move applications to something other than the default location?
I know I am.
When I upgraded, I saw the same problem - I had moved iCal (among others) outside of "applications" to something like "Applications/Business Apps"
The version in "Business Apps" was the Tiger version, and it wouldn't run. However, the Leopard version (Installed to /Applications) worked fine.
So, I deleted the "Tiger" version, moved the iCal to where I wanted it, and all was well.
In a similar note, I put a number of iLive apps in a different folder -- and OS X software update stopped finding updates for those apps. I had to move them back to /Applications in order to get OS X software update to run them.

I received this error message when trying to run System Preferences (SP) for the first time after running the 10.5.1 update (from the download, not software update). After the update, I repaired permissions. Did another restart. Same.
I reinstalled 10.5.1 update. Same message. Logged in as another user. No change.
I removed the com.apple.systempreferences.plist from ~/library/preferences. No change, and it did not re-create the .plist file.
Any ideas? No one else seems to be having this problem as far as I can tell.

System Preferences, Calculator, Preview. Tried repairing permissions, and other tips from this thread. The strange thing is, the actual Leopard applications seem to have actually vanished? I don't know if this is anything to do with Time Machine; Anyway, My fix was:
Download Pacifist (if you don't already have it), locate the apps that you're having problems with on the Leopard install DVD, and copy them to the Applications Folder (Click on 'Replace Bundle')

I use mountain lion 10.8.1
I try start disk utility it only says: "You can't use this version of the application Disk Utility with this version of Mac OSX. You have Disk Utility 12.1"To do a Reinstall of the OS boot to the Recovery HD, Command+r key at startup, then select Reinstall Mac OS X. the files will be downloaded from the internet and then the instal will begin.
With Mt Lion it is also available from the Mac App store in your Purchases area. You may be able to download it and then nmanually starting the install while booted to Mt Lion.
But I'd normally use the Recovery HD as that takes the installed OS out of the picture. -
I have just bought a 2011 iMac (2.5 ghz, 4gb) and logic express 9, and when i installed logic and tried to run it i had a message saying 'you can't use this version of the application logic express with this version of Mac OS X. How do i sort this out!? It is very frustrating as the main reason i have bought a mac is to use logic! Any help would be great as i am a complete novice when it comes to Macs!

I had the same problem as you. I used Software Update to update Logic Express to the latest version, and then it ran without any problems. -
I am transferring my mother's address book and mail etc to my computer from an external hard drive enclosure and am not able to open it due to this message: You can't use this version of the application Address Book with this version of Mac OS X. her email is in user>Library>Mail folder. Hopefully you've created another user on your Mac for your mother so she would have her own user Library.

after (successfully) updating from 10.5.1 to 10.5.2, the System Preferences.app cannot be started. Either the application does not start (a silent error) or there is a message "You cannot use the application "System preferences.app" with this version of MacOS X." The version is 10.5.2, according to "About this Mac", while the application version is 3.5. The same happens when I attempt to open "Time machine preferences" using the new menu/icon on the bar.
Any help is appreciated.

By the way, the application version (of System preferences.app) remained the same (old one). Then I removed the application to Trash (meaning to restore it later if required) and applied the update again (and a third time), but then a new System preferences.app was not installed and the older one has disappeared from the trash! What a mess this update turns out to be...

How do you solve error "You can't use this version of the application Install Mac OS X.app with this version of Mac OS X" when trying to go back to leopard from lion?
Local Mac shop said to hold down "c" after inserting disk to get "disk utility" to come up in order to wipe hard drive. I can't seem to get it to do this.This W7 was purchased for using Fusion, as others did - per reviews from amazon. The technician today called their contact at VMWare - Fusion not officially for use with Lion - even though I read at the VMWare support site that others have made it work. Apparently my setup doesn't work.
Do you know how to do the proceedure for bringing up the disk utility when starting the disk?
BTW, some of the windows applications I want to continue using are Incredimail, Calendarscope, Stamps.com and a few others I have used over many years. What do you use for email and calendar?
Wow, sounds like another reason to not use MS Windows.
Regarding your Disk Utility question, please elablorate I'm not sure what you're trying to do. Disk Utilty is just that...a utility, it's something most users never have to use especially on a new computer. Let me know what you're trying to do there before I give you some instructions.
As for as your Windows apps I would recommend using Mail and iCal, both come as part of OS X and are very robust tools. Don't discount the software built right into OS X it's very robust and powerful not all like the bloatware most Windows boxes ship with. Stamps.com well I'd look for another alternative. It's clear they don't support OS X which makes me a little suspicious that they're so behind the times.
Also if you have not been exposed to these links before I'd strongly recommend bookmarking them and using them. They're extermely useful!

What operating system version are you using on your Macbook? If you are still using Tiger 10.4 the new iTunes requires Leopard (10.5) or higher.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. You can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 which works on OS X 10.4 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

Why are the colors flat converting from pages to pdf
