You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Ma

My hardrive died so I got it replaced and since I bought my macbook on ebay I have no Installation discs so got a friend to install leopard - everything so far seems ok but when I click Mail this comes up -'You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X.'. Any ideas? Ive ran software update and its all up to scratch..

Greetings,
You seem to have a conflict somewhere, and it looks like you have a prior version of Mail that doesn't work with Leopard, along with the Leopard version of Mail. What version was on the Mac when you bought it, and where did the version of Leopard come from, exactly (was it a retail boxed version, or a version that shipped with another model of laptop)? Be very specific, as it does make a difference.

I recently needed to replace my hard drive and now when I try to open the Mail application I get the following message: "You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X."
    Any help is appreciated.

    ANSWERING MY OWN POST:
I have tried reinstalling Mail from my Snow Leopard upgrade disk directly and tried it using Pacifist. Neither worked because both simply reinstalled version 4.0. Fortunately, I have a MacBook Pro and it has version 4.1. I copied this directly, which was not ideal (it was quite confused about my mailboxes), but it worked.
The problem is that +Software Update+ did not detect the old version of Mail and Apple does not provide a direct way (that I could find) of downloading the latest version. Each time I downloaded Mail from Apple, it was version 4.0.

  • You cannot use this version of the application iCa with this version of Mac OS x

Bought a macbook pro from a friend- running 10.5.8. Could not find iCal in the Apps folder. Researched on line and it sounded like I needed to reinstall it from the disk. I did from the original os x disk and when I tried to open it, received the following message:
you cannot use this version of the application iCa with this version of Mac OS x
I have two disk for version 10.2. Neither disk offers "optional installs" but the second has "AdditionalApplications.pkg" but doen not install iCal at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. That brings up a whole new question- can I run 10.6 on my macbook? The specs are below:
    Model Name:
    MacBook Pro 15"
      Model Identifier:
    MacBookPro1,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core Duo
      Processor Speed:

      Number Of Processors:
    1
      Total Number Of Cores:
    2
      L2 Cache:
    2 MB
      Memory:

Was told at Apple Store that it would run terribly slow.

I recently updated to 10.5.8 because my iTunes needed the new Safari and that needed 10.5.8
After doing this, my mail no longer works and gives me the message above. What I don't understand is why is there an update that is required for one this but doesn't allow you to run another? Am I missing a Mail update to allow it to run on 10.5.8???
I've already went through apple care and they walked me through running an Archival Install to get my computer back to its original settings, but that means I can't use Safari 4 and iTunes 9...
Is there a way to have it all, Mail, 10.5.8, Safari 4 and iTunes 9? Please help, my mail is the only way I can check my work e-mail and it's not something I can just go without. Thank you

Since you've restored your computer you won't be able to check the version number of your Mail application, but the question about moving Mail may still apply.

  • You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version OSX

I just installed 10.5.8 (9L30) via Software Update and now my Mail doesn't work. Instead, I get a dialog box that says "You cannot use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac OS X." When I run it out of Terminal from /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail it runs fine, even though it is Version 3.5 (which is what shows up when I do Get Info on the Mail application in the Applications folder). This is really poor, Apple. This is basic stuff -when you upgrade the OS you have to make sure all the Apps work. How are you going to fix this?

    Thomas A Reed wrote:
Apple obviously are stupid enough to release an update that broke mail..
Then how do you explain all the people saying they've had no problems with the update? (Oh, and "Apple are"???)
Not everyone had the problem. Good for them. More than one person had the problem - and perhaps even more will experience it. That means there is a hole in the update process - i.e. something does not work properly in all situations. Apple is not God - they stuff up sometimes, innit? Stop defending them.
No matter whether you use a Mac or Windows machine, you need to do some basic maintenance from time to time to keep things working smoothly. Macs, overall, tend to need less, but you still need to check the hard drive from time to time, and you definitely never want to install an OS update if there's a chance you've got hard drive problems.
So if that's the case, why design an "automatic" Software Update utility that does not do a check of HD integrity if it is so vital to do such a check before installing an OS upgrade? Does that make any sense? Where do Apple recommend such a check prior to installing an OS upgrade? It's not immediately obvious do the average user. Apple have gone out of their way to make claims like "you never have to defrag a Mac". They don't mention anything about HD checks. If it's so fundamental, why not? Is it unreasonable to think that a company that prides itself on good design would think of this?
Thank you for the link for the consolidated update. That fixed it - except that it should have worked first go from the auto updater.

  • "YOU CANNOT USE THIS APPLICATION SAFARI WITH THIS VERSION OF MAC OS X"

hi, just downloaded the update for mac 10.5.1 - all went well - then tried to open Safari and received this message "YOU CANNOT USE THIS APPLICATION SAFARI WITH THIS VERSION OF MAC OS X" - I have tried downloading Safari again through netscape but that does not seem to work either - ANY IDEAS???? Thanks

It sounds likely that you have more than one copy of Safari on your hard drive. The one in your Applications folder is the one you should have. The one you're trying to launch is an older version that somehow got moved somewhere else, so that the new version got installed in your Applications folder (where it should be) while the old version is running (or trying to run) from another location.
First, double-click on the Safari application file that you have in your Applications folder. Does it run properly, without error messages? If so, everything is fine. You just need to get rid of the old version of Safari and set it up so you can easily launch the new version that is in your Applications folder.
Are you clicking on the Safari icon in your Dock when you see the error message? If so, do this: Control-click on the Safari icon in your Dock and select "Show in Finder" from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open showing the location of that copy of Safari. If that Finder window is any location other than the Applications folder, delete the Safari file that is in that folder. Then drag the Safari icon out of your Dock. Navigate to your Applications folder and drag the Safari file from the Applications folder to your Dock.
You should be all set, but click on the new Safari icon in your Dock to make sure it is the correct version and runs without problems.

  • "You cannot use this application with this version of OS X"

    Hi,
I'm getting this message when I try to open .AVI files that I uploaded from my digital camera, but I'm posting it here instead of in the Quicktime section because I believe that the cause of the problem is more general. When researching this problem, I looked at the info panel for these .AVI files, and the app listed to open them was "Quicktime Player (default) (7.1.3)". But the actual version of Quicktime that I have installed is version 7.4. If I set the file's "Open With" app to be "Quicktime 7.4", it opens fine, but the "Open With" app reverts back to "Quicktime Player (default) (7.1.3)", making the problem come back. I've also noticed that if I right-click on other apps (a PDF file, for example), and choose "Open With" from the popup menu, that I see other versions of apps that no longer exist on my machine (Safari 2.0.4, for example). I think that files associated with these older app versions may be the cause of many of the "You cannot use this application with this version of OS X" issues that have been reported here. My question is where is this list of "installed" products maintained in OS X, and is there a way that I can edit it to remove those product versions that no longer exist on my system. In my particular instance, I'd like to remove "Quicktime 7.1.3" which should allow me to set the associated app for my .AVI files to be Quicktime 7.4 with no possibility of the association reverting to an earlier version that's not only incompatible with Leopard, but also not installed on my system.
    Thanks,
    Ken

When you associate a file with an application, are you then clicking the "Change All" button? You can rebuild the LaunchServices database. Evidently the location of the command and the database have changed slightly in Leopard from what they were in Tiger. See this thread for the updated instructions:

Also, make sure you don't have the old applications archived somewhere. I've been astonished in the past at just how enterprising the system can be in finding some program squirreled away in an obscure backup folder and listing it as an option to open something.

  • Got message... you can't use this version of the application mail with this version of Max OS X, after i upgraded operating system to MAC OSA X Snow leopard.  How do I get my Mail?

Hi ...just upgraded my Macbook pro to Mac OSX snow leopard and when I tried to look at my mail, I got this message "You can't use this version of the application mail with this version of MAC OS X".  What do I do now to look at my mail and receive new mail?

After updating make sure you repair permissions and restart your computer.

  • You can't use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac

I just installed 10.6 and all seemed well until I tried to load Mail. I got this response
"You can't use this version of the application Mail with this version of Mac You have Mail 3.5".
I successfully reinstalled 10.6 and I also reloaded the apps that were contained in another folder on the CD. I get the same message every time I try to load the Mail program. I deleted the "mail plist" file and that did not work. So I recovered my old one from Time Machine. Still dead!
My poor wife is so frustrated that she is now using my machine!!! HELP PLEASE!

I successfully reinstalled 10.6 and I also reloaded the apps that were contained in another folder on the CD.
Why would you "reload" any apps? They should have been installed when you installed 10.6. Where exactly did you reload them from?
So I recovered my old one from Time Machine.
...which undoubtedly still contained the old copy of Mail from your last Leopard backup, and not the current version of Mail that should have been installed with 10.6.
What you need to do is reinstall the appropriate version of Mail from your Snow Leopard install disk. You can install one specific program from the install disk using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com> - though, check carefully to make sure it's been cleared for use with the Snow Leopard install disk!
Whether that will fix your problem or not, I don't know, as I don't know what exactly you've done. It sounds like you've done a lot of things you should not have done, mixing components of your older system into your newer system. It is entirely possible you will need to reinstall the entire system.

trying to launch photoshop cs3 on a mac running OS10.6.8 i keep getting the error message: Licensing for this product has stopped working  you cannot use this product at this time. You must repair the problem by uninstalling and then reinstalling this product or contacting your IT adminstrator or Adobe customer support for help
I already Uninstalled and reinstalled the product and it still does not work.

    Hi,
Try to uninstall the software again and you have to manually
    Delete the following folders:
    [Startup Disk]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PCD
    [Startup Disk]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/caps
    [Startup Disk]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/backup
    [Startup Disk]/Library/Preferences/FLEXnet Publisher/
    [Startup Disk]/Library/Application Support/FLEXnet Publisher/
Go to Applications-->Utilities-->Disk Utility, Open it and Select the MAC HD and then click on Repair permissions.
After that try to run the cleaner tool as mentioned by kglad.
Restart machine and then try to install again.
*** Make sure , you only delete these folders if there is no other adobe applications installed on the machine. As if you have any other Adobe application of the suite ( not free applications ) then it will be a problem.

  • Error on ALL CS3 Products: "You cannot use this product at this time..."

    Hello all,
I woke up this morning and attempted to launch Adobe Photoshop CS3. I received the following error:
"You cannot use this product at this time. You must repair the problem by uninstalling..."
At the same time I tried opening Photoshop, my Antivirus application (ESET NOD 32 Antivirus) indicated that it found a "threat" named AdobeLM_libFNP.dll.
I then tried opening DreamWeaver CS3. Same issue. Also got another threat notification from ESET NOD 32.
Non CS3 products (Photoshop CS2, Illustrator 10) do not appear to be affected.
I've already referred to the TechNote for this issue. I've tried all of the solutions, except for uninstalling and reinstalling the software.
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb401528&sliceId=1
I really don't have the time today to uninstall and reinstall all of my Adobe apps. I'm hoping there is another solution.
I'm running a complete system/virus scan right now and its coming up with threats left and right... all of them are Adobe-related w/file names like "AdobeDeviceCentralAll1.cab"
    Can anyone help?

    >At the same time I tried opening Photoshop, my Antivirus application (ESET NOD 32 Antivirus) indicated that it found a "threat" named AdobeLM_libFNP.dll.
if you're SURE that's a virus, you'll have to reinstall the full app. my guess is you AV app is a little too aggressive in it's scanning and it stopping the adobe license manager (AdobeLM) from running so you can't run your apps.
having heard of adobe, but never heard of est nod, i'd trust adobe 1st... try another virus scanner. for example avg (free or paid) or kaspersky, panda, mcaffe, symantec, etc.
hmm googling i found a pcweek review. they say it's great at catching "unknown" viruses (proactive protection) but "less than stellar" at stopping and disenfecting lots of other malware. so it may be thinking because of the behaviour of the ALM, nod32 thinks it's caught an unknown virus.
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,130906/article.html
    >When it comes to proactive protection, Eset's NOD32 was the hands-down winner in "Virus Stoppers," our eight-program antivirus roundup. In our tests, it caught 79 percent of unknown malware samples when using one-month-old signature files. The next-closest program, BitDefender Antivirus 10, came in with a distant 61 percent
    >NOD32's overall malware detection rate wasn't stellar, however. When pitted against AV-Test.org's nearly 900,000-strong "zoo" of Trojans, viruses, and other malware, NOD32 caught only 90 percent, compared to the 96 percent rate of top performers Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6, Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2007, and BitDefender Antivirus 10. It fared surprisingly poorly with 32-bit Windows viruses (approximately 1 in 11 samples in the zoo), catching only 73 percent.
