Youtube displaying widescreen movies in letterbox on widescreen tv

Hello all,
I hope I can get some help here.
I have a dual-monitor setup where I have a 19" main monitor running on 1280x1024 as my main desktop, and I have my 42" widescreen full-HD tv connected to the secondary output of my GeForce 9600GT.
I like to watch movies/youtube fullscreen on my 42" tv ofcourse, especially since YouTube now has 1080p quality available.
On other media players (like windows media player, Ustream and others), when I click fullscreen on widescreen content, the entire display of the TV is being used, but when I click the fullscreen option on YouTube (when the youtube content is on 16:9) I get a black letterbox all around the content.
Youtube is treating my TV as a 4:3 (so I get black bars on the left and the right). I guess the player isn't able to detect that it's actually a widescreen TV. The playbar and adds etc. show up on only part of the screen as well, and then ofcourse since it seems to detect 4:3, it also puts black bars on the top and the bottom for the widescreen content.
Is there any way to force 16:9 settings on youtube, regardless of what the player is apparently detecting?
Kind regards.

Hi, The only thing I would suggest is to see if Youtube has any guidelines. Also when you open your thread, look to the right side and you'll see "More like This" where various threads seem to be discussing this issue.
Thanks,

  • 16:9 is Letterboxed on Widescreen TV

I have a 16:9 FCP project, exported QT 16:9 file and made 16:9 MPEG2 file for DVD using Episode Pro. This plays anamorphic in QT. Created a DVDSP4 project SD 16:9 Letterboxed. Plays fine in simulation. Final DVD is letterbox on a widescreen TV making the frame appear somewhat squished. I have not had this problem in DVDSP3. DVD's made this way in DVDSP3 are all anamorphically displayed on a widescreen TV and letterboxed on a 4:3 display. Any suggestions? Thanks, Jim

    Jim,
It almost sounds like this is an issue with the display settings of the DVD player and/or TV than it is with the DVD itself. Obviously you're simulating in "16x9 Letterbox" mode since it looks right there.
The only other thing I would think is that you letterboxed your video as part of a 4x3 MPEG which you put into a 16x9 track and that your simulator settings are hiding this by making it "look right". That sounds far fetched though... so I'm sticking with it's the DVD player's/TV's fault.

  • Widescreen movies are being cut off

I have a few widescreen movies on my iPod, and whenever I play them, they get resized so that the left and right sides are cut off so the movie can fill the whole screen. Is there a way to fix this? Or do I have to deal with it?

Haha, just found the solution. I'm an idiot.

  • Burning Widescreen movies

When I burn iDVDs - the Apple templates for the menu titles come out fine in widescreen format (16:9)
But the widescreen movies I add to be played - get condensed into Standard 4:30 format on playback.
How can I get my movies to play in the original widescreen format?

    It should be allowed.
it is not smart to limit on what a person can do on what they brought like a movie's or a TV series.
What is the point of buying to download it if you are not able to burn it to DVD.
With qflix you can really burn what you buy to DVD but right now qflix can only be used with CinemaNow.
    qflix is a DVD burner.

I was really hoping to burn what i buy from iTunes.

  • Importing 4:3 clip into widescreen movie

I am putting together a movie that contains pictures and videos.  I have two sources of video - one is widescreen 16:9 and the other is 4:3.  How do I import a 4:3 clip into a widescreen movie?
I don't mind if the movie ends up 4:3.  Would it be better/easier to import a clip from a 16:9 format into a 4:3 movie?

When you Import that 4:3 footage into the 16:9 Project, do you have any problems?
If the files Import fine, into the 16:9 Project, you have two choices: leave the black bars, or Scale the footage up, effectively cropping off some of the top & bottom, or, with Motion>Position, one of those.
    Good luck,

  • Widescreen TV vs Widescreen Movies

    I have a ATV, I have a question.
Why do widescreen Movies (IE Cars) render as widescreen properly (black bars on the top and bottom), but widescreen tv shows (IE Battlestar Galactica, Heroes) fill the entire screen? On my iPod you could choose between WS or full screen, but on my ATV you cannot.
This is making the shows look aweful and distorted.
    Any suggestions?

Why do widescreen Movies (IE Cars) render as widescreen properly (black bars on the top and bottom), but widescreen tv shows (IE Battlestar Galactica, Heroes) fill the entire screen? As tsvisser has already said, there are many "widescreen" aspect ratios -- 16:9 (1.78:1), 1.85:1, 2.35:1, 2.40:1, etc. In many cases, the DVD manufacturer is kind enough to state the intended original aspect for the user. In this case, a user can combine a crop/scale approach to equating the exact number of picture lines to an exact aspect ratio. Where not given, the aspect ratio can usually be inferred by simply "cropping" the source file and calculating what is left rounded to the nearest normal ratio.
So much for "exactness" in aspect ratios -- now it's time to throw in a "monkey wrench." When it comes to aspect ratios and encode/decode efficiency, some applications (like MediaFork/HandBrake) do not allow the user to define "exact" aspect ratios. In this case, "macro-blocks" (16 x 16 pixels) are used to determine "valid" dimension settings. (I.e., the application will only allow the user to select heights and widths which are evenly divisible by 16.) For example, a 720 x 405 encode would provide an exact 16:9 (1.78:1) aspect ratio, but some applications will only allow you to use a 720 x 400 setting (45 x 25 macro-block matrix) which means your actual aspect ratio ends up as 1.80:1. Luckily, most people would not notice the difference so there is no real harm done.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Check the location setting for the iTunes Store is correct.
You might also try restarting the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    Restart your router.
If you are still having problems try a restore.

  • How to display planned movement date and actual movement date together?

    Hi, Professionals,
My purpose is to list delayed outbound deliveries.
Anyone could tell me how to display planned movement date and actual movement date?
    Appreciate your help.

    Thanks Shiva.
I tried another way to do it. It works only for a short period of time.
By using VL06O, I list all outbound deliveries by limiting both planned goods movement dates and actual goods movements dates to the same week I would like to inspect. Say both from 7th/11 to 14th/11.
then I list outbound delivery list with planned goods movement date to 7th/11 but left out actual goods movements dates this time.
In excel, I compare those two lists and filter out those unique ones because those unique documents means delayed deliveries which cannot delivery according to planned date.
However, the "delayed" list generated by this method has some noises. Not all of documents are really delayed although most of them do.
I'm also looking for a way to list sales documents number of these delayed delivery documents so i can retrieve order details from it such as order value.
    Help still needed.

  • ITunes store for iPad won't display the movies / tvshow taps

My iPad iTunes store will not display the (movies , tv show, music) taps at the end of the screen.

    Howard-
Could you have used a different computer to do the initial setup of your iPad?  If so, the other computer's Apple ID may be what the iTunes store is looking for.
To get around that, you may need to connect to your computer that has the correct ID and restore from iTunes.  In the worst case, you might need to reset the iPad to factory settings by erasing all data, and then set it up as new.

Hi, can a button on a single frame be coded to both display a movie clip on its first click and, after a second click, hide the movie clip?  Thanks

Yes, assuming you make the movieclip invisible to start with, in the event handler function just use...
    mc_name.visible = !mc_name.visible;

This is a known, ans ongoing issue. Rest assured you're not the only one affected. There are several threads here already discussing this, I suggest searhing them out if you want more details, and possible work-arounds for locally hosted content.

  • Getting widescreen .mov to properly letterbox

I have a 624x352 .mov file and want to burn a properly letterboxed DVD on a regular TV. I cannot figure out a way to do it with just iDVD. If I pick a 4:3 theme and drop in the movie I get no letterboxing with the DVD, just a pan and scan DVD. A widescreen theme is just wrong. The only way I have figured out how to do this is to drop the movie into iMovie with format DV, then share to iDVD (a 4:3 theme) and then burn. This seems to play properly on a DVD player. But the weird thing is that if I play this on my Mac fullscreen I get black on all sides. Get info says 720x480 but it clearly is wider than 720. But it could be even wider with no black bars on the sides. This is clearly different from a commercial DVD which will fill up the entire width and letterbox top and bottom.
Does anyone know how to make this work other than the way I said?

Ok , but why use only iDVD when this might help?

    Yes...and no....
Anamorphic DV is 720 X 480, just like normal DV, but when it is displayed it is stretched to 16:9 format......both have the exact same number of pixels before they are displayed
