I wanted to have the SSDs in RAID0 with Win7 and the games on it, then a volume on the 2TB that the RAID backs up to, with the remaining 1.5TB just free storage space in another volume.  I couldn't get raid past Win7's Where Do You Want To Install screen during installation, so I ended up installing the OS on just one SSD.  I figured I'd backup the functioning OS to the 2TB then rebuild the RAID array and copy the OS back onto it.
The system had been up an running for a full day, being updated left and right nonstop, several big games put in, etc etc, everything was running fine until I decided to run MSI Live Update and started pumping in updates.  Constant errors as I went along, but generally it'd just skip to the next installation attempt.  When it got down to updating the BIOS and did it's DOS injection thing, it for forcefully shut down the PC, restarted, did Post, flashed the BIOS wallpaper, restarted again, Posted, no BIOS wallpaper, just endless "Missing Operating System".  Walked away, went to bed, back up and at it for a few minutes (Will be back tonight for however long it takes to get it fixed).  I switched the BIOS switch over, no dice.  Feels like it's a BIOS "OS" that's gone, and that a BIOS reset/flash is in order or something, but I've never done these things.
Thanks in advance for any rendered assistance that leads to resolution.

The SSDs are definitely hooked up where they're supposed to go; the motherboard had a little sticker n' everything for where the two SSD dedicated SATA 6.0gbps ports were :P  AND my case has 2 specific slots for SSDs which don't use the hotswap electronics PCB passthrough like the other 4 bays, which is where the 2T is installed.  I was going to take the 2TB out and hook it up normally and see if that changed the speeds, but I'm leaning towards wishful thinking.  Did I mention I went and made several volumes with different file cluster sizes to test and see if that was the issue?  Alas, all were borked.  It still confuses me though because every once n' awhile it'd do massive burst speeds the way it's supposed to.
As far as I can recall I'm using up to date BIOS, the last one or two.  One BIOS switch is set for the last BIOS, the other switch is a step back devoid of the Windows 8 stuff.  I believe I have all the drivers up to date as well.  Intel 335's are literally brand new, mine hadn't been more than 3 weeks old off the production line when I received them; IE, they should pretty much have the latest firmware on them which spares me the risk of destroying something precious
I MIGHT have a SATA external enclosure around here somewhere, if so, the 2TB could go in that for additional testing until I figure out where it's sustaining speeds of 2-10MB vs 100-150MB/second.
Meanwhile, the good news is that the system has been fully operational and hella stable.  I hadn't slept in almost 3 days, playing and installing stuff nonstop.  The system continues to run cooler (32c@stock CPU speed) as the thermal paste sets in, the knocking sound of the fan in the PSU has gone away upon me reawakening a bit ago, and amazingly, this massive system (with EIGHT fans) draws only 60-65 watts while desktopping.  That's just astounding

  • Z77A-GD65 Win7 64bit boot fail followingMSI Live Update 5 Firmware update

    Hi,
For some reason I decided to have a go with MSI Live Update 5 auto update today (having not used it previously in the 1.5years I've owned this system.
Running in Win 7 64 bit, it performed an 'update' and then the system completely crashed (as in turned off and on again). On reboot the system only went as far as the BIOS flash screen.
It failed to boot form the SSD boot drive and a message saying "Reboot with Proper Boot Drive".
I booted into BIOS (version  10.11) and the boot drive is still recognised.
I tried a reboot and the same error.
I tried to boot backup within BIOS and saw a message flash that ended with "Failed to initialize MSI-X".
None of the MSI applications work, it doesn't boot into Windows and I'm stuck.
Can anyone suggest how I might be able to get Windows back and running without having to do a full reinstall? I can't seem to get the backup software to work now so I'm a bit stuck. If I try and do a full flash of the drive and start again, will it fix the issue or is the problem with the motherboard/bios setup?
Has anyone else had this problem?
    System spec:
    MSI Z77A-GD65
    Intel i7-3770k 3.5Ghz
    Corsair Vengeance LP 8GB RAM
    Win7 64Bit

    YES
OK, so I found a few people on Tom's Hardware message board that seem to have the same issue with this latest BIOS update from MSI so at least it's not just me.
    I reset CMOS
    I set BIOS to default
I downloaded the BIOS ME from an older version 10.8 of BIOS that I knew worked fine (from another computer)
    Flashed BIOS with USB
Booted the system with Win7 64 OEM CD
    Selected Repair Mode
    Let it do its thing
I'm back in business from where I left off.
Won't be touching the BIOS update again unless I can be absolutely sure its going to be stable on my MB.
    RE: Legacy and UEFI
After installing 10.11, it defaulted to UEFI only but I changed the setting to Legacy and UEFI. It didn't fix the issue though.
I've rolled back, it works again so I'm happy other than the fact I've lost almost a full day of work over it.
    Cheers xmad

  • HT4818 after installing boot camp 4 on mountain lion " Missing operating system"

    Hello
I hade a small Windows 7 partition , so after updating to mountain lion , I wanted resize win partition .
I made an image of it , then deleted win partition from utility disk , ( wrong idea )
I didn’t notice that boot camp  could erase win partition , anyway I have tried several times , and always after reboot boot camp
    I get the same
    Missing operating system .
If I boot from dvd install win or if i boot from the boot win partition.
hd and partitions looks OK to utility disk
Any idea to fix the problem ?

I presume that you've followed the instructions for sideloading the iMac Windows drivers into your install via USB stick? (wasn't aware the EFI recognized the SD slot as storage on boot. Now i know)
I always found more success in just slipstreaming the drivers and install.xml file onto a custom Win7 DVD rather than the USB approach when trying with my Late 2009 27" iMac. The Win7 installer needs that enclosed .xml file in the driver package to tell it where to find the drivers so that they be loaded when the Win7 image extracts itself.
If you're using mountain lion, then you should be receiving the proper Win7 driver set. If you wanted to create a custom image, then you can use an ISO file, the driver package and disk utility to make something you can use. Either that or you learn what edits your install.xml file needs to point the installer properly and check it manually.
I don't know what links you have so i'll just include everything:
Installing boot camp on a Late 2009 iMac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3173
Direct link to Late 2009 iMac-specific Windows drivers.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL995
I'd try a USB stick and the iMac-specific driver set. It should steer your insolent windows installer correctly.
    Hope this helps.

  • T420 running Windows 7 has "missing operating system"

While working on my laptop, the computer crashed and later gave me a "missing operating system" message. I don't have any Windows 7 discs; I saw on the forum instructions for fixing ThinkPads running Vista, but not Win 7. Does anyone have experience with how to fix this? Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks.

what did you see when pressing the thinkvantage button during the boot cycle? if nothing, then something may have damaged the boot loader on the hdd. i believe there is a lenovo utility that can fix accessibility to the recovery partition and allow you to use the rescue & recovery tools there.
if that's a no-go, then try out zoltanthegypsy's suggestion of obtaining a win7 boot/fixit disk. or, lastly, if your t420 is still under warranty, you might try contacting lenovo about purchasing a full recovery dvd set matching the coa on the bottom of the macine. last i heard, they run about $50, but they will work to restore the machine to the factory state when first shipped.

  • Get "missing operating system" message when trying to access bootcamp since installing Lion.

I cannot access bootcamp since installing Lion, either through Bootpicker or after holding down the option key after restart.  I get the message "Missing operating system." I have access to the bootcamp partition.  It shows up on my Mac desktop and was able to run disk verify and repair on it from disk utility. No change.  I am using a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor.  Did Lion relabel the bootcamp disk when it created the recovery disk?  Thanks.

  • Missing Operating System Error

Hello, my aunt asked me to fix her computer but I fix game systems. She had it for a few years, Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5892(model # PSLC0U-02501F).When I turned it on, it said press F2 for Setup Utility and F12 for Boot Manager. After everything, it says " Missing Operating System".I tried everything on setup and boot manager, took hard drive out and put back in, took memory put and put back in , took big battery and put it back. Please Help!!!!!!!

Can you get it into the bios setup screen.  If so is the hard drive listed.  It sounds to me like a hard drive failure.  If you replace the hard drive you will also probably have to buy a set of recovery disks unless your aunt made a set.

  • [solved: PEBKAC] syslinux woes: "Missing operating system"

In light of http://mailman.archlinux.org/pipermail/ … 23211.html I decided to try syslinux, but couldn't get it to work. I think I followed the wiki (i.e. the /boot partition is marked active etc.) but still got  "Missing operating system" error and had to use a liveCD.
If anyone is using syslinux for their bootloader, can you pleas post the configs or give me a hint what could have gone wrong?

I use syslinux (or more precisely the extlinux that boot from an ext{2,3,4} partition) successfully. Hereafter I briefly post what have to be done. If it still does not work. Repost posting exactly what you have tried.
    1) create a directoty /boot/syslinux, containing syslinux.cfg and possibly modules that you will refer in this file (notably menu.c32 and chain.c32). You can put symlinks on the condition that the symlinks point to file in the same partition.
small edit: pay attention of 2) if you use symlinks. the / of the pointed file is the root of the partition where syslinux it. It does not correspond to the way you see it in the system if this partition is not mounted in /. See 2).
    2) Place syslinux.cfg in this directoty. The root of the file mentionned are relative to the root of the partition containing the /boot/syslinux directory. You can also use relative paths that are relative to the directory /boot/syslinux (so if you have a /boot partition, the linux kernel will be referenced as /vmlinuz-linux, if /boot is on the same partition as / then /boot/vmlinuz-linux). I put here my config as an example: http://pastebin.com/zNunwupx
    3) Make the partition containing /boot/syslinux bootable.
    4) Put an mbr on the hard disk to be booted:
    dd if=/usr/lib/syslinux/mbr.bin of=/dev/sda bs=440 count=1
Replace /dev/sda by your hard disk. If you use gpt partition, you may have to use /usr/lib/syslinux/gptmbr.bin
    5) run
    extlinux /boot/syslinux

  • [SOLVED] Mac OS X/Arch dual boot Missing Operating System GRUB problem

I am attempting to dual boot Mac OS X.5 and Arch on my "unibody" macbook pro.
I am getting the "Missing Operating System" error over and over. I have followed the Macbook install guide in the wiki and the Beginners install guide. I've also read all the threads I could find on the subject. The common fix seems to be changing the root path on the grub menu.lst... I've tried that. twice. with no luck.
I have EFI on sda1, Mac OS X on sda2 and Arch root on sda3.
My menu.lst is pretty much standard with
    root (hd0,2)
    kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda3 ro
for both Arch and the Arcch fallback.
I'm not sure what else to try. I can give more information, but I'm not sure what else to give.
    Thanks in advance .

I know exactly what the problem is.
If you're using rEFIt, sync your partition tables (should be the menu item called 'Partitioning Tool'). The problem is that GRUB has been installed, but doesn't know where to find the Arch partition.
After syncing, you may find that the boot process hangs at the Linux logo on a gray background. No worries — just reboot and the problem should fix itself.
N.B. You will need to do a partition table sync every time you change your hard drive's layout.

System froze and I had to switch off. Then the following happens
1st error message "Missing operating system".
After switch off system wont boot.
I have no rescue disc. I have a separate PC.
Can I download a booting sequence to use on a USB?

    Hi
It looks like something happened to your HDD. Maybe its faulty, or maybe just the system partition is corrupt.
Well, in best case you need to install the system again.
If you dont have the recover disk, you could order this here:

  • BootCamp Partition- Missing Operating System Windows Startup Repair

    Hi.
I made the mistake of creating a new partition on my HD with an existing Boot Camp partition. I tried to follow the advice of Loner T in this thread https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6574886, and got made the Windows installation bootable. Upon starting up Windows the screen displayed 'Missing Operating System', I tried doing a Windows Startup Repair using the Windows Installation Media without any luck.

    Thank you

Assuming that you've downloaded the 1ety47ww.exe file, executed it to unpack the .ISO file, burned the .ISO file to a blank CD using  a "write image" (or similar) option to your CD burner program and have the CD/DVD drive in the list of bootable drives, then it should work.  The two most common things which go wrong and give you the "missing operating system" error message are:
    - simply copying the .ISO file to the blank CD; that is, telling the burning program to treat the .ISO file as any other document or data file.  The CD writing program MUST use a specific setting/option which properly writes the .ISO file to the disk so that it becomes bootable
    - the system's BIOS has removed the CD/DVD drive from the list of available boot devices; if you press the F12 key just after the system is turned on, you should get a "Preparing Boot Device List" message, followed by a "Boot Menu". The CD/DVD drive would be "ATAPI CD0:xxxxxx".  If that's not listed, then you will have to access the BIOS and change the Startup/Boot setting.
To a lesser extent, the CD/DVD drive may be defective - if it can't read the burnt disk, then that can also lead to the "missing OS" message.

  • Satellite L750/04k missing operating system

Hi, well seems I am having an adventure with the toshiba.
Had to uninstall and reinstall drivers for the touchpad on/off function - display still not working.
TS advised value package needed - spend 2 + hours download 32 bit; when it didn't work another TS let me know as I had a 64 bit system I had to source download and extract that one so 3 plus hours later done this it failed.
Have to restore laptop to factory settings. TS closed; as part of their F Q&A they gave a guide how to 'restore'
    -turn off laptop.
-turn on laptop whilst holding the '0' key (next to the 9 key)
    - screen on laptop says 'Missing Operating System' top left corner and in bottom left corner 'HDD Recovery***'
No recovery disks were in the box when purchasing this laptop new in June of 2011.
Seems that I have continual issues with the functionality of the key board.
This was the same problem I experienced 2-3 weeks ago and was told it was a virus and had to correct this by clearing the system and reinstalling from backup.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated. ... since it done this I have read the manual, tried to google toshiba support on the iphone no luck and spent the last 3 hours setting up my 'older' laptop to get some internet access going...

The recovery CDs were not part of the package because you could create a own Recover disk using the Recover disk Creator.
Here is a FAQ how to run system restore on Toshiba Australian notebooks:

If HDD recover is not possible, then you will need to use a Recover disk.
The missing recover disk could be ordered here.
