Z87-G45 Fan Connection Questions

Greetings,
I wanted to ask about connecting my Corsair liquid cooler. I'm using 2 radiator fans in a push-pull config, plus the cooler itself needs power. The Z87-G45 has 2 cpu fan connectors.
My first question is am I going to get fan control from this mobo? All my fans and cooler cables are 3-pin. I was given the impression that you might need 4-pin fans for variable fan speed control. Is that true?
If I am somehow going to get fan control from the mobo, I'd appreciate some advice on what goes where. Should I hook up the cooler power and one of the radiator fans to the CPU fan connectors and then the other radiator fan to a sys fan connector? Or would it better to have the cooler power on a sys fan connector? Better yet, is it safe to use a Y-connector for both of the radiator fans. I can't get a clear read on whether or not there is enough power for that and also whether it might screw up the BIOS readings for fan control (if that's a factor). I'm also one connector short for all the fans I want to run, so a Y-connector would be ideal. The 2 radiator fans are identical (Corsair AF120 - 12v/0.40a). I've read people write they *think* the max amp for each connector is 1.0, but I can't find anything definitive (it's not in manual).
If you're confident about any of this, I would appreciate your advice.

Thanks for replying to one of my posts yet again Nichrome. You are an invaluable resource for this forum.
I did a double-check, and the Corsair fans are 3 pin. It's a shame; I wish I had studied this b4 I bought them. They are the loudest fans in my system. 4 pin fans, surprisingly, still seem to be very much the exception. Doing a search on Newegg for 4 pin fans, most of them, where I could see a picture of the plug, were of the old power supply molex variety.
Am I right to believe that the fan control for the CPU fan headers would be based on the CPU temp and the Sys fan headers would be based on either the mobo temp or the general temp of the air in the case? That will confirm for me if it's a bad idea to hook up the radiator fans to the Sys fan headers.

Z87-G45 Gaming temperature question

I am wanting to verify if the temperatures I see with command center are good during gaming or not. Normal temps doing normal stuff I see 29 - 35c and whenever I game they go to anywhere from 50-60c. I recorded last night for 30 min and the peak was 57c for the CPU (build is below) and the case temp was at 41c. I did send back the original CPU because the temps were around 70-75c while gaming which to me were way to high. Also I'm thinking of replacing the stock heat sink and fan and am wondering what would be a good option (non-water cooling). Thanks in advance for responses!

Under very heavy loads the stock cooler is crap, anyone can tell you that. For lower price cooler a Cooler Master 212 is OK, for a better one at higher price Zalman 9900 is what I use now but did have the 212+ prior to the Zalman and really didn't have any complaints about it. Under extreme loads my CPU would get up to 75C max with 212+, with the 9900 61C max.

MSI Z87-G45 Question

So for the past 2 months I've been looking for an answer for this little problem of mine, I'm sure it's something I'm doing wrong but anyways here's the problem: I just built a new PC, nothing super fancy but it is my first PC build. The first mobo I used was the ASUS A55BM-K and a one 4gb stick of RAM. I grounded my self and started building, CPU, MOBO, GPU, PSU, etc. Then I turned it on, the lights flashed and fans began to spin, but no display on my monitor. Everywhere I checked suggested many things which I did then I did last resort and figured I burned out my mobo or RAM, so I purchased the MSI Z87-G45 gaming mobo and 2x2gb GSkill sticks of RAM. Connected everything and no avail. Please can someone help?

is the computer in the case or outside the case (always suggest that people try the parts outside the case on a non conductive surface (untreated wood or cardboard) to rule out a short under the board coming from the case<--- I do that every build so I can make sure if everything is ok before putting it in a case as its a pain if something is defective and you have to rip it all back out again)?

Fans and Z87-GD65 new build question

Hi. I am waiting on all my parts for a new build this week. I've only done one build before and that was over 4 years ago (i5-750 / MSI P55-GD65). My question is regarding fans and how to control them on the Z87-GD65 mobo. My case comes with three 140 mm 3-pin fans and a 3 fan 3-speed manual fan controller. I've never used a fan controller before and would prefer to use SpeedFan or the BIOS to adjust speed fans based on CPU/GPU temperatures. Will I be able to set up automatic speed control in BIOS or SpeedFan for all 3 fans with this motherboard? Or do I need PWM fans to do so? What if I want to install 2 extra fans? Any help would be appreciated!

Those connected to the fan controllers are controlled through their buttons (or whatever to adjust the speed). Those connected to motherboard, are connected through a software, such as Command Centre (which in my opinion is great for this).
Not sure how many connectors do you have on the motherboard, but I think there's x2 CPUFan and x3 SysFan. That means you can have x5 fans connected to them. But you can either purchase a Y splitter which will let you connect 2 fans into a single socket (I am using one Y splitter) or just get proper fan controller.

MSI Z87-G45 will not load OS with two SATA HDD's connected

I have an MSI Z87-G45 board and I am attempting to connect a second SATA HDD. Each time I connect the second disk and then power up the workstation I get the following message:
Reboot and Select proper Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key
The primary HDD is a WD 160GB drive and the secondary drive that I am attempting to connect is a WD 2TB drive. I am not trying to dual boot, I just need a second disk for a little more space available. I am not sure if there are some settings that would need to be changed in the BIOS, but I would think that by default I could connect a secondary HDD, and it would be recognized as such. Anyone else dealt with this or have any pointers? This is really driving me crazy.
I should note everything else with the workstation works perfectly, it's just when adding a second drive, it will no longer load windows 7 from the 160GB drive.

That is one reason this is driving me crazy, I have made sure that the 160GB drive is primary in the boot process. Is there anything else you can think of that may be causing this?

Z87-G45 CPU Fan Sensor Malfunction

Seems like pretty much a non issue but none the less I want to figure this out. When monitoring fan speeds on the MSI Z87-G45 Gaming motherboard it keeps reading zero, then returns to a normal level, then reads 0. I noted this even in the motherboards on utility accessed before allowing windows to load and again using a 3rd party monitoring program. I'm going to assume its a faulty sensor but I'm just not sure. Anyone have any ideas?

Resetting CMOS questions z87-g45

Hi Guys,
It took me forever to find where the reset CMOS button was on this motherboard, but I found it here (page 1-9 on manual).
My question relates to reseting best practices. Do I need to turn of my power? Do I unplug power supply? What is the difference between removing the battery (saw in some thread) vs just hitting the button.
Why I am asking. I bought a desktop computer off of craigslist with the graphics card and RAM removed. I am wondering if the CMOS has some information related to those hardware pieces, because, everything boots up, but when I plug VGA, DVI, or HDMI into the motherboard, the monitor does not turn on. I am pretty sure the cpu is a core i5-4670k with an on board graphics card, but I am not sure.
The specs I know:
Cheap PNY Optima 2x4gb ram
msi z87-g45 motherboard
sound blaster sound card
520 antec gaming power supply (tested and works)

MSI Z87-G45 Super Raid setup questions

I have a MSI Z87-G45 board and two SSD's. I have never setup raids before but plan to do so. I saw there is a app to install for Super Raid. I thought I had to setup raid before installing windows? Seeing the app is something I can download from the MSI Live Update app it makes me think I can setup this up after windows has been installed. Is this correct?
If not how do I go about setting up Raid? I don't mind reinstalling windows if I need to. I did not see raid options in the Bios.

I bet that mSATA is controlled By that same controller and so you cant use some of your SATA port same time as you use those mSATA cards, SSDs,...
To need to get in BIOS and change to RAID makes it kinda HW RAID and so that "Best Solution" is kinda wrong. As you can format it in current Windows, but you need to reg edit before or you get Blue Screen and so cant get in OS.
You have had allways chanse to use diffrent drives like HDD's and SSD's in mix When they have same data cable like SATA. The speed and size, go like allways higer rules.
I need to read more in to this Super RAID. But i ges you arent in useing mSATA, so use it like normal HW RAID and get real intel drives for it (in USB stick) before os install and install them on screen you choose your drive. That way you dont need to update them after install

Msi z87-g45 gaming, no display, no beep.

I am building a gaming computer. When i turn on my computer the cpu fan spins quickly then immediately slows down to a slow spinning state. My Boost audio light is on as well. But i get no display. I have tried the DVI HDMI and VGA outputs. I also accidentally pressed the cmos button while the compute was on. I also removed my mobo battery for 5 mins. Oh and on top of all that i dont have my standoffs. So maybe the board is short circuiting. But if that was the case my is my cpu fan remaining on as well as my boost audio light?
Here are my specs:
Ultra 550w ATX Power Supply
2 DDR3 in slots 2 and 4
Cpu with no bent pins (that i can tell)

The board has been tested by aria computing and came back fine they have also replaced the RAM and CPU incase they were the problem. Il list all the things Iv tried so far. Thing that gets me is there is no beep when I turn it on so something is wrong and im banging my head against the wall not being able to figure it out.
Checked both power connections many many times
Check for shorts
Changed power supply
Changed RAM (and tested in all configerations)
Tested 3 monitors on all ports (onboard DVI, VGA and HDMI)
Put 3 GPU's in it as well and tested all ports on them
Tested on a low end CPU
Tried out of case with just power leads and a monitor connected (no HD,USB,frount audio)
Reset COSMOS and checked the battery

MSI Z87-G45 Gaming not entering setup or boot menu

Please someone help, I am getting no setup or boot menu, case & CPU fans come on, drives come on, led's come on, but blank screen.
I took out the graphic card & ram sticks, pulled the plug for leds & case fans, took all cables off HDD's, now only cpu & one stick of ram in dimm 2 connected + power switch.
plugged vga cable direct in MB, blank screen, then plugged cable in MB HDMI, blank screen.
tested monitor, ram & power supply in my sons computer which is a x58 LGA1366, all worked well.
I have no means of testing motherboard or cpu.
specs:
MB: MSI Z87-G45 Gaming
CPU: i5-4670k
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Tactical 1866MHz 9-9-9-27 1.5v
PSU: Corsair CS650M
I also tried another PSU a Thermaltake AP850W
P.S.
I have reset all i.e. pulled plug, taken battery out, pressed reset & shorted the two reset pins next to battery.

newer board are different they need at least a CPU to even show a code as they use that to activate the BIOS and if they do not have that it will FAIL to post anything as the board is used as a backbone as nearly all the important stuff is on the CPU itself (Processor, IMC, SATA controller, Network Controller, VRM (on Haswell), GPU and many other things) so it will fail to post as before it was only a processor but now there more of a system on chip really and has most of the important stuff that used to be on the Board itself so without that the Motherboard is just an electrical plane with impressively limited connections as all the good stuff is now on the Processor that you do not have!
There is not much that you can tell till you at least get that CPU as the board has nothing to work with as there is nothing to process the signals from the BIOS so its just a useless item so shows nothing.

Blank Screen No Beep No Post on new Z87-G45 Gaming

I posted this on another forum, but since I think my issue might be a bit different I figured a new message would be better.
I switch on older mobo with the this one, new ram, and new Cpu.
When I power it on everything spins up but no post no screen no beep nothing....just spinning fans.
I did all the tests, plugs, bent socket, ram chips, etc...
Since I was switching out a older motherboard with this one, I knew my power supply was good but who knows.
Today. I took a case and stripped it down to metal...put in all the correct mounts in the correct positions, new (in box) Antec 650W PSU
Mounted the board in the new case, connected the speaker, usbs and switches. Plugged in the PSU.
Note: I didn't hook up anything. No Hard disk, no DVD drive, no keyboard, no mouse, nothing.
plugged in the monitor (via DVI)
turned it on...same result. Spinning CPU fans but no beep and a blank screen.
BTW, I registered at the MSI support site but since I send in my serial number tag for the rebate I couldn't register a product.

Just an update.
I returned the board to Fry's and while there, there was someone else returning the same board for the exact same reason. He got a different board and I just exchanged mine for the same model (even though it was an open box).
I followed xmad's advice and did a out of case test with it. While sitting on the plastic 'Conductive Grid Bag, I plugged in the CPU, the RAM and the power. Hooked up the DVI and turned on the power.
and....got a message on the screen about the amount of memory has changed.
I'll take that. Putting the board in the case and hooking up all the wires now.

Z87 G45 bios splash reboot cycle

I built my machine 16 months ago. i was told MSI all the way when building if can as great quality components.
I got an i7 4770k, 8gb ram, msi lightning 780, msi z87 g45 gaming board.
Never once overclocked a single thing, didnt need to as it stood strong against the games I play.
I was playing elder scrolls few days ago when all of sudden a got a reboot of the machine, the 780 fans went crazy full, the lightning logo showing green as normal but it wouldn't load past bios screen. I could enter bios no problem. But nothing seemed to get past bios splash. I tried the 780 in a second machine, same issue but now no video at all, fans on full, logo lit up green, moniter wont even see its connected to anything.
I tried loading from onboard video on my machine without 780 connected. Same thing, cant get past bios splash just reboots self. I have tried flashing bios to 1.9, tried reinstalling windows, it finishes windows installation reboots and bios cycle again.
Took to a pc repair they don't know whats wrong they checked psu, memory tested for 17 hours, totally stumped.
This rig has never been overclocked once ok, never overheated as always made sure was cool and clean inside case.
Needless to say I am extremely unhappy and disappointed with MSI. I have made several machines over the years and never once seen this, I bought the card for £380 and the motherboard £130. I expected it to last longer than the cheaper machines I built. Not both MSI components crashing out in 16 months.
Does anyone know anything else I can try to salvage any of this?

I don't have a second cpu to try.
The thing is in the bios it shows the cpu, the ram, hard drive etc ok. I can even install windows from disk, but at end windows does a reboot then I get stuck at bios splash cycle. When I took the pc to repair store they advised did the memtest and other things, they managed to get a windows installed after several bsod and clearing cmos as last effort and then they managed to get windows going but they were quite honest and said they don't really know if fluke or not. They tested all they could and believe it a software issue possibly with board, now issue is back again.
My PSU is 850W, they tested it and said its fine and no issues with it.

Z87-G45 sound simultaneously on Sennheiser PC363D and rear panel

Hello fellow MSI enthusiasts,
I have a question which I cannot seem to solve myself
My motherboard is a MSI Z87-G45 Gaming. I want to listen to (all) sounds via my rear soundpanel (Realtek) and my Sennheiser headset (a PC363D, with its own sound processor (connected via USB)).
In my previous setup, I couldn't have the front- and rear-panel play sound at the same time.. So I wonder if it is something I am overlooking, or a shortcoming of this motherboard (in my humble opinion).
In short: can a Z87-G45 play sounds via my USB-headset AND my rear panel, at the same time?
(my speakerset is an Altec 2.1 set, so no 5.1 or 7.1 surround needed).

You might need to rebuild the entire PC.
Remove everything from the case and start with a minimal config (barebone).

MSI Z87 G45 GAMING erratic BSOD/freeze @ 2300, stable @1600. Can't solve.

Hi All,
I would welcome some advice. I am about 4 months into a new machine build:
* MSI Z87 G45 GAMING motherboard
* i7-4770K Haswell 3.5 GHz & aftermarket heatpipe cooler
* 4 x 4Gb G.Skill SNIPER DDR3-2133 PC3-1700 (F3-17000CL11D-8GBSR)
* GeForce GTX 650 Ti w/ 2 Gb Video RAM
* Samsung 840 Pro 256 Gb SSD
* Thermaltake 700W Toughpower
* Win 7 Pro 64-bit SP1
The system seems to run fine at the default 1600 MHz RAM speed, however if I implement either of the X.M.P. profiles (which kick the memory speed up to the RAM's advertised speed of 2133 MHz), the system will occasionally (every 8 to 48 hours) freeze or BSOD. The BSOD stop codes are inconsistent in number (0x00, 0x41, 0x1E, 0xC4) and driver. When the system freezes, there is no consistent behavior. I am not doing any other overclocking besides using the X.M.P. profile in the memory.
RAM timing on the 2133 X.M.P. profile is: 11-11-11-30.
I have updated the BIOS to 1.5, including the ME, and updated all drivers in the system. All irrelevant hardware and drivers are disabled. Also I have done the following:
* MemTest+ 5.01 for over 30 hours, all 4 sticks in. No errors.
* Intel BurnTest on 'Very High', 10 passes, no errors
* Prime95 for over day with 90 C CPU temps constantly being hit. No errors.
* Unigine Valley Benchmark for 30 minutes; no issues
I increased V_DRAM from 1.60V (from the XMP profile) to 1.65V, and I also added +0.10V offset to increase the CPU I/O ANALOG , CPU I/O DIGITAL and SYSTEM AGENT voltages. Didn't seem to help. All other CPU voltages are default from [auto].
I rolled the memory speed back to the default 1600 MHz, and the system seems stable as a rock.
I don't really need to have the memory run at 2133 MHz, but it irks me that the system is not stable with the rated components, and I'm befuddled why the stress tests seem to pass just fine, then the system will randomly hang with arguably a far less demanding load than the stress tests.
Note that I have not yet:
* reset the CMOS when changing to X.M.P. Perhaps I should?
* reseated the graphics card or CPU. The latter will require R/R of the thermal grease, which I will do if needed, but it's a pain. Since the system is stable at 1600 MHz, I assumed that all basic systems are working as they should.
* Tried to work my way up in memory speed step by stem from 1600 to 2133 to see where things fall apart.
* Tested the video memory
I suspect main system memory, despite the clean bill of health from MemTest, and based on many of the comments to others with similar problems from the veterans on this board. I don't want to push the CPU voltages too much above the default/auto values, for fear of damage and reduced lifetime.
Also, the power supply is a nice unit from an older high-end gaming rig. It is rated at 700W. The PS does probably have over 30,000 hours on it (24/7 use for 3-4 years), however. Strange that it would work at 1600 MHz fine, and with only slightly more power load at 2133. I suppose stranger things have happened.
I've read the suggestions to run only 2 sticks, rather than 4, but I can't justify dropping $140 on new memory (I don't really need the extra speed benefit, it's more curiosity and just not knowing at this point).
Anyway, perhaps more seasoned souls than I can share their thoughts. The system is perfectly usable at 1600, but I'd really like to know where the lockups are stemming from. Troubleshooting is maddening because of the inconsistency in the long times before failure and lack of repeatability to reproduce the issue.

Turns out I also found this from G.SKILL in going over reviews of the memory modules I have. Another user had a similar configuration as mine and was having similar problems. G.SKILL replied:

Not knowing any better, I simply purchased two "kits" of 2x4 GB each and installed them. Perhaps worse, if the modules were matched, I may well have mixed them up so the matched modules don't even sit in the same channels 1/3 or 2/4. G.SKILL seems to have a pretty responsive board, so I'll ask them what they suggest.
Also in the end, I really just want a stable machine. This is a basically an office/engineering machine. My initial thinking was that if the system was unstable at 2133 then there is something wrong with it that needs to be fixed. It sounds instead like getting to 2133 is not guaranteed, and is much more of an art than simply throwing the modules in and powering up the system.
I'm perfectly happy at 1600 knowing the system is stable. Indeed realizing now that 2133 requires overclocking, I may well have backed off to 1600 even if everything had worked just fine at 2300, just to trade extra stability for the (small) performance improvement that I would likely never notice anyway.
I'll put together a post for the G.SKILL forums, and if I get anything useful I'll post what I learn here for completeness.
