Zen Xtra Sound Messed Up, Need h

Ok i've had my Zen Xtra 40 gig for about 2 months now and now all the tracks (audio) on it are messed up (as in sometimes in only plays the beat, sometimes only voices, and other times its just all jumbled up)
It sounds right when i put it on EAX audio (small room environment) but when I have it on normal its all jumbled up
I put more music files on it last night and this morning is when it start messing up (also this morning is the first time i listened to it since before i put more music files on it) maybe i put a corrupt file on there? does anyone know how i can fix this?
I already tried deleted the tracks I put on it last night,

Try doing a Clean up from Recovery mode. The sticky at the top of this (MP3 Players) forum covers the steps on how to get into Rescue Mode or you can check out the Knowledgebase article for the ste

  • Jukebox Zen Xtra sound prob

Hi, I've had my Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra for more than 2 years and have had little problems with it. However, now I cannot get any sound out of the left speaker of any type of speaker/earphones I plug into the audiojack. This is not a speaker/earphone problem, they work with any audio equipment. I can get sound out of both left and right speakers/phones if I plug the jack only 80% into the audiojack. But if I plug the jack all the way into the player, only the right speaker/phone works. Any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

    Hello There,
I am experiencing the exact same problem - "Device not connected, even though I can see the device as a virtual dri've on my XP SP2 PC. I have contacted creative tech support and followed their instructions to the letter with no success.
Creative tech support instructed me to try the following:
<FONT face=Verdana color=#06082c size=2>MaKe sure that my antivirus software, firewall and spy ware is turned off. Their thinking was that some services are effect the connection between the MP3 device and USB port.</LI>
<FONT face=Verdana color=#06082c size=2>Also I tried booting my XP PC in safe mode, ensuring the most of the services were turned off .. i.e. firewall, virus protection, etc. Still can not get the device to connect.</LI>
align=center><FONT face=Verdana color=#06082c size=2>The Error message on the Device itself (Zen Xtra display) reads as follows:Firmware error on reboot -- error message simply states "firmware problem" then goes to Rescue Mode v.3 - Boot v.4, HW v0.0.displays following 4 options: Clean Up2: Format all3: Reload OS4: RebootTried all four options and still getting same error message.
<FONT face=Verdana color=#06082c size=2>I am going to try and load the original firmware that came with Zen Xtra, if that works I will try to upgrade the firmware to the latest release.
    <FONT face=Verdana color=#06082c size=2>Later tonight I will get a chance to attempt these actions. <FONT face=Verdana color=#06082c size=2>I will post my results later.

  • Zen Xtra Back Up help need

I need tips or help on how I can back up my Creative Zen Xtra 30 GB. Everytime I try, it freezes up my pcand doesn't work.Any Idea's anyone? Thanks.

When does your PC freeze exactly? How are you trying to back up the contents, are you using MediaSource?
You should be able to just copy the contents back to the PC, as long as they're not protected. Protected (with DRM) songs will not copy back to the PC.

  • NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra sound issue

My player has issues with some tracks. It seems to play certain tracks perfectly and others it plays but they sound strange as if the speaker was blown or someone is coughing or something. It might have to do with bass or something but i mean its strange because it doesn't do it with every track in my library. These tracks play fine in WMP but on my Zen they are screwed up. Has anyone ever heard of this before?

I suspect what you're hearing is the same thing I get with my Zen 20gig, and my iPod Nano. Basically the sound going into the preamp is overdriving the preamp (my theory anyway). With my zen, setting the 'smart volume' preference to 'on' fixes most of this. If the xtra has the same option, then turn it on. Most portable mp3 players seem to suffer from this, yet when you play the tracks on your PC they sound fine.
You can also run mp3's through mp3gain prior to loading them to your player, and reduce them down a few notches. For me setting mp3 gain to 9db solves 98% of my problems. MP3 gain also tells you whether there's clipping present in the mp3's.

  • Zen Xtra - low bitrate MP3s sound terri

I download a lot of mp3 speeches, lectures, etc. - i.e., all spoken word stuff (as opposed to music). Many of these files are fairly low bitrate (6KBS) in order to minimize space and make the downloads go faster.
These low bitrate mp3s play/sound fine when I play them on my computer (remember, we're talking spoken word, not music - I know 6KBS is too low for music to sound good). But, while they sound ok when played on my computer (in Windows Media Player), they sound like crap when I play them on my Zen Xtra (really slow and slurred speech, etc.)
The problem is not my car cassette adaptor since the same thing happens when I use headphones.
Is there anything I can do? I've never upgrade the firmware - might that help?
Or, would re-encoding these at a higher bitrate help - recognizing that I don't have anything better to start with than the 6KBS file I started with?

Thanks for the good and prompt response. If I may follow up?
I never installed CMS - did it come with my Zen Xtra? To install it now, do I need either to buy it or to find my original CD (which may be hard) or can I download and install it free from the support website as a Zen Xtra owner?
I do have Windows Media Player and MusicMatch Jukebox Deluxe - will either of those do what CMS does?
CMS would have come with the player on the installation CD but you can download it from the website. When you install it you need to install the drivers first, then connect your player so that when CMS installs it will see that you have a device that entitles you to load the program. Then load the Zen Xtra plugin for CMS.
You can convert the files with WMP when you sync the files to your player - in the Sync settings there is a quality tab and you can choose to convert the files before transferring. I think it will only convert to WMAs though. If you have Copy Protect switched on in the WMP settings then the files will have DRM applied.

  • Zen Xtra software - need HELP!

Hi, Just bought a Zen Xtra 40 GB from a friend. I am totally confused about just about everything, and found today that the Nomad Primer has disappeared! But, my software question:
I am trying to figure out what software I need to update or install on my computer/player, etc. I don't understand if my firmware and MediaSource software is old or new or what?
I am running Windows XP Service pack 2, all up to date. The Zen I just bought is a year old. The firmware on it says it is: version .03.02. My MediaSource software says it is: version 2.02.06.
Do I need to update? If so, which updates do I need? If I install new firmware, will it erase all the music on my player? I am desperately trying to back up my Zen music library onto my computer, but everything keeps going wrong. Maybe it's my software?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

    TBeatles67,
Go to the website and download the following updates.
. Drivers - Creative Zen and Jukebox Driver Upgrade version .30.03 (.3 MB)
    2. MediaSource update - Creative MediaSource Player/Organizer 3.30.2 (52.2 MB)
    3. Nomad Plugin - Creative Zen and NOMAD Jukebox plugin 2.00.20 for Creative MediaSource (9.72 MB)
If you intend to update the firmware, just go for the version .xx.xx update that's available on the website. It shouldn't delete the files in the player but like any electronics device, anything can go wrong anytime so I would also suggest backing up your data/audio files in the player first just in case.

  • Sound card is messed up needs help!

Okay, one day I was out of the house and my brother used my computer. I came back and my sound card is not working at all. He told me he was only playing Team Fortress 2 but I think he's lying. ps.
I try to go in open volume mixer or playback devices but they dont open or they just freeze and i have to use task manager to close the windows.
If I have my speakers turned off or my headphones unplugged the sound blaster is okay, it only freezes up when sound is played, and when frozen, it stays broken until i restart the computer. Sometimes when I restart it already doesnt work or when I try to shut the computer down it says the system cant shut down because it says its currently playing logoff sound so i have to end program to turn it off, and sometimes the computer doesnt shut down! It turns the moniter and mouse off, but the computer is still on and I have to hold the power button to turn it off. I reinstalled a fresh Windows Vista Ultimate hoping that would fix the problem but it still does the same, so its prabably not a software program, its the sound card or probably the moherboard. I have a HP computer with PCI-E Sound Blaster Xtreme Audio and have the latest drivers. Someone please help me I might need sound for an online summer coarse!

'Re: Sound card is messed up needs help!y someone2,
Here are links to some threads on similar questions with some troubleshooting you can try. You may find more using the Forums search function. Checking that Windows Audio is started and set to Automatic is simple in XP, but Vista may differ. If you can run msconfig, disable everything on the Startup tab, and see if you get stable sound. If so, then enable items one at a time until the problem returns.

  • Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra: Need help getting it to work with Vis

Does anyone know if the Zen Xtra will work with Windows Vista 32-bit's? I have tried installing the software that came with my MP3 player on my laptop that runs with Vista and it just doesn't work. Are there new drivers that I need? Please help!

i just found another, easier way to make you zen xtra work with windows vista
go to the support page and download the oldest driver, i think it's version .30 or somehting like that
install that- it should prompt you to overwrite a newer version of the driver, if it does, say ok
vista might then ask you if it installed correctly, say no, and run the installation in compatibility mode
then download the oldest version of nomad explorer, and install that
instead of using the preset instalation directory, select browse
i'm not sure if this has any effect, but i think some of the folders are renamed for vista
when the installation is finished, select "restart my computer now"
if you wait, it may not work properly
this should get nomad explorer running properly with vista
if you don't like this program and prefer creative media source organizer, you can now transfer your music to your harddri've and update your firmwar, without having to worry about external storage, a dual boot system, or any of those messy options

  • Dead drive in a Zen Xtra, need help w/ replacem

The dead dri've in my 40Gb Zen Xtra has been removed from the player and its been sitting in pieces for the past week or so. I would like to know what I would need to do to a replacement dri've (have a 40Gb notebook dri've ready to go) in order for the player to A. recognize it and B. be able to put songs on it. Do I have to format it in a certain way before hand or will the firmware update be able to do that? Help is much appreciated.
    -Mobious-

I was having similar troubles trying to get a big Maxtor operational. I had to set a jumper on the back of the drive ... then was able to follow the advice given below. (Please see complete text of other item).
I've been successful using Maxtor 60GB IDE drives on Solaris 8 on Sparc by doing the following:
    1. Boot the system off System Software 1 of 2 CD, and follow the instructions until you can open a command window.
    2. Once in the command window you need to type "format". Choose the hard drive (disk), but then you need to create a new "type" that is compatible with the solaris driver software and uses most of the disk. For large IDE drives, the only thing that matters is the actual number of usable sectors (which are 512 bytes each). You can go to the Maxtor website to get the real number of sectors for your drive. Then you need to make up a set of cyl, head, sectors numbers to enter into the "type". The limits on the Solaris driver (found by hitting enter at the prompts) are: max Cyl: 32767, max heads: 64, max sectors: 256. These are different than the limits for Windows. ATA limits max heads to 16, so I use that to be safe. Therefore I choose to use 256 sectors, 16 heads, and then choose a number of cylinders that will yield a number equal or less than the total number of sectors allowed on the drive (ie: total sectors = cyl*heads*sectors). Then subtract 2 from the cylinders when entering the number of cyl at the prompt, as you'll need them for the following steps where it wants to reserve two cylinders. When you get to the name of the drive, I choose to type the name of the drive with an * appended to the end to signify a difference. Once done defining the "type", write the label.
    3. Proceed with installation.
(Again, please see other item in forum (something about installing a bix maxtor).
You can email me at [email protected] if you want more specific advice.
    Cheers, John

  • Outside of Warranty on Zen Xtra with no sound

I am the owner of a Zen Xtra 30 GB that I purchased in Dec 03, meaning I'm outside the window for the warranty, and the player seems to be working fine--there's just no sound coming through the speakers. I've checked the headphones and they seem to work fine everywhere else. Does anyone have an idea of how much this will cost to fix or am I sitting on a paper weight. Are there any other uses for this thing now if I don't get it fixed or should I pitch it's
    Thanks in advance

sorry for the confusion. the hedphones work fine on my laptop, PC, old walkman, etc. they just don't work on the player. the headphones that came with the zen = the same thing. the player seems to be operating fine, there is just no sound on the headphones when playing. thanks.
thanks to ut-king as well. i'm not so sure about my low level welding skills and may find out how much creative will change to fix.

  • No sound Nomad Zen Xtra 30

    Hi,
I just bought a Nomad Zen Xtra 30gb. It has the most recent firmware upgrade from the creative website too.
The device is absolutely brand new and came in a fully sealed packet.
The problem is that even though my MP3 player appears to do everything it's supposed to do on the screen, and even appears to play transferred tracks, I'm getting absolutely no sound from the ear phones.
Now I checked the ear phones on another device and they are absolutely fine.
The weird thing is that the software that comes with the zen xtra plays files on my hard dri've fine, and appears to play music from the MP3 player. However no sound is produced then either.
Please help, this is driving me mad as I can find no hint of a solution anywhere, and no one seems to report a similar problem.

All you can try is the recovery procedure in the FAQ post. If this doesn't revi've sound the player is faulty.

  • Zen Xtra Problem, Need H

I can't get my Zen Xtra to turn on except when I've got it plugged into the AC Adapter. When it's on, it always has the icon saying that it's on AC power, and that it's not charging. With the battery in, or with the battery out, it runs the same way.
The battery should not be dead, it's not been used really all that much, and it's only 6 months old. Is my problem likely a big one? I'm really worried that this thing is not going to work at all anymore, anyone have any idea of what could be wrong?

You can try the advice here in the Zen FAQ at Nomadness.net, at your OWN RISK.

I had EXACTLY the same problem.... i had to send the zen xtra back... never found out the exact problem, but in my opinion there was a problem with the usb connection on the unit.
I lost pretty much 50gigs worth of music and files
The player would connect but browsing took forever and transfers always timed out

  • Need Opinion on Purchasing Zen Xtra 60GB

Fry's Electronics is selling the 60GB Zen Xtra for $249 with an extra $40 off with a rebate. However, they unfortunately don't offer an extended warranty plan, which is why I have not purchased one over the last several months.
Wal-Mart's website offers 2- and 3-year service plans for the 60GB Zen Xtra, but they are currently out of stock and I would have to wait for it to be mailed, plus, the price is $298 plus shipping and handling, plus $30-$40 for the service plan.
Should I take the risk for the low price? The Fry's deal is today and tomorrow only.
I haven't gotten one in the first place in part of the headphone jack problems, the slight gap between tracks, and also because I have not completely tagged my entire catalog properly, and I wouldn't want to waste my warranty time tagging all those files and once I finally get that done, my warranty is over and I have problems.
    Does it seem worth it's

ZEN XTRA 30 is what i have and i love it. this is my first mp3 player and it's great.
    i say go for it..
I second that thought. The Xtra already comes with a 3 month/ year warrenty, and it doesn't have a headphone jack problem. It is a stable mp3 player. Go to Fry's and save the $40
