Zipper007: Mac Pro 2010 question

zipper007
*Mac Pro 2010 question*
I'm interested in Quad Core 2.8 model.
I cant find the details I want on it right now.
If in the future I decide to upgrade (couple of years)
If the parts are available, yes. But not a supported option.
You are on your own.
I use the daughter card and (2) processors from an 8 Core in my machine. Pull mine and add the upgrade?
You can't change from single to dual though.
My personal feeling is it may not make as much sense cost-wise or performance, and buy what you need. Or build PC of course.
http://www.apple.com/macpro/design.html
http://macperformanceguide.com/Reviews-MacProWestmere-Estimates.html
http://www.apple.com/macpro/specs.html

I know it can be done and has been... but I still think
A) you bought something less than retail that slanted the real cost
B) no warranty
C) due to other changes might not be worth it
Guy posted on Accelerateyourmac how they (and others, but not a lot really) upped 5100 to 5355 (taken from his HP server). Or that one person is having fan and temp problems.
If you want, go for it with the risks, or build a PC for goodness sake. But you have to do your own leg work, stepping, firmware, and Apple will never issue firmware updates for say 2008 to support anything new; or 2009. That is their business model, it isn't my model, and what I do is my business. I just can't see running OS X anymore.

  • Will upgrade to mac pro 2010 give huge improvement from mac pro 2006?

I asked in an earlier post but may not have been clear. Basically, if I upgrade to a new mac pro 2010 quad core 2.8 GHz (12GB ram) will it give me a huge improvement from a mac pro 2006 2.0GHz (with 5GB Ram) and thus reduce the need to render and the time it takes to render? My thoughts are that it will because the graphics card is much more powerful and has more memory and hence any FXplug effects will have better RT playback. Is this a correct assumption?
Or is this too difficult to quantify. Is it simply "You will see an improvement but..."
    I mainly edit 1080 25p Pro Res.
    Thanks

Further test has astounded me. I installed my copy of Premiere Pro CS4 on the core i3 iMac. I don't use it on my Mac Pro. I only bought it for Encore CS4 (I had an old copy of Premiere from Windows that I used to upgrade).
I copied an avchd card to the iMac desktop. I opened the media in Premiere Pro cs4 and played it back at Highest Quality: it was smooth as butter even with transitions. There were 47 minutes of footage that I added to the timeline and exported out as AIC 1080 50i. This took 2 hours 20 minutes!
I know that this is far from the ideal: ie editing source files from desktop and rendering to the desktop on the system drive (something I would not normally do, but I did not have an FW800 external drive available). I don't like PPro to edit with and was using to compare to my Mac Pro.
The same clips card were on my internal raid 0 on my Mac Pro. I loaded them onto the timeline in Premiere Pro and it struggled at preview quality and the render to an external esata drive was showing in excess of 15 hours!
I am amazed. But this raises questions for me too. The core i3 is a 3.06 GHz cpu (hyperthreading but no turbo boost) and shows as four cores (two real, two virtual) in activity monitor. They were at 310% when playing back the avchd files. If I get the 2.8GHz Mac Pro there will be eight cores and turbo boost. Will this be faster than the core i3 in playing back footage and much faster in rendering? Or does the higher clock speed of the i3 mean that for editing it is better but will lose out to the Nehalem Xeon when rendering?
Translating these finding to an FCP context, might this mean that a rewrap of the avchd to h.264 for editing in FCP is possible? In some cases this might be preferable to transcoding.
I cannot get over how much better the core i3 performance is over the Woodcrest Xeons. This makes me wonder if the Nehalem Xeons are as good if not better?

  • Premiere CS5 crash in new Mac Pro 2010

    I have two problems:
    1. Sometimes when I make double cick in premiere icon, the program don't start. I see the previous premiere window with the 4 last projects, but I can not select anything, because the pointer mouse become a beach ball. I have to turn off the program with Alt+Cmd+esc.
    2. The big problem. Premiere CS5 5.0.0 crash editing while I'm making marks In and Out in Source window or playing the timeline. The 3 monitors became black or freeze, mouse disapears, sounds freeze and I have to restart with power button.
I have last Mac Pro 2010, 2,8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, Mac OS X 10.6.4, 8GB RAM, ATi Radeon 5870, 3 x Hard disk 2 TB, 3 monitors connected trought DVI double chanel, and two minidisplayport-DVI double chanel.
    Sorry for my english.
Any help or doubt about my explanation?

    Thanks Todd!
I install Premiere Pro CS5 (5.0.2) update, and the graphics update from apple but the problem persists. I disconnected two monitors, too.
It's very extrange because I had a configuration system running ok, premiere running ok, everything good, but the system hard disk crashes.
The problem is when I reinstall a backup copy of that system in a new hard disk, then Premiere don't start, and when start then crashes editing. All of the programs are running well, and other adobe CS5 applications, too.
The old hard disk is a Hitachi 2TB (originally from apple), and the new hard disk is a Western Digital caviar black 1TB.
I make the backup system from a *.dmg file. I tried with time machine, with disk utilities and with Carbon Copy Cloner. The result is always the same. Premiere won't start.
I think I have small ghosts inside my computer =)
Maybe is question of a bad clone but this is not a complicated task.
Maybe is question of permits. But I resolve the permits question with disk utilities.
Do you think is question of the clone image?
Now I'm reinstalling a new copy of Leopard SO after formatting the new hard drive western digital 1TB. I will install only the CS5 adobe master collection, to tried in a clean system.

  • Mac Pro 2010 triple boot (Snow Leopard + Windows + Yosemite)?

    Hello All,
This is my first question here, I'm usually trying to find the answer myself, but this time I wasn't able to find anything clear enough to me. So I hope that someone can give me clear and easy to understand answer. I must also tell that my English isn't perfect, but should be more than good enough for communication. :-)
I have Mac Pro 2010, 4 core CPU 3.2 GHz, 6 GB RAM, ATI 5870.
HD Bay 1: WD Black 1 TB - Boot Snow Leopard 10.6.8
(Just to add: I am happy because when I bought my Mac it came with 10.6. I am happy with it, it's stable, and I want to keep it as it is)
HD Bay 2: WD Black 1 TB - Boot Windows 7 x64 (bootcamp, full drive)
(I am very happy how it works, so I want to keep it as is)
HD Bay 3: WD Green 2 TB - for all kind of data storage
HD Bay 4: Was empty until yesterday, but now I have another WD Black 1 TB to put it in - still not formatted.
I would like to install Yosemite on that new drive (first I was thinking about Maverick, but then I saw that some new applications will not run, like Final Cut Pro X, new MS Office, still in beta, plus I would like to use iMessage, etc.), and keep everything else as it is now - absolutelly untouched.
    • Is it safe to do it, or I can make some mistake and lose Snow Leo and/or Windows?
    • Is position of the drives important? Should I, for example, put new drive in a Bay 3, and move data disk to Bay 4, or it doesn't matter?
    • When I download it from App Store, and when installation starts automatically, do I have an option to select to keep untouched everything I have now?
(I don't want even to collect any data from Snow Leopard, like mail settings, bookmarks, applications installed - absolutely nothing, it should run as a totally new comp and without any interaction with Snow Leopard, except ordinary hard disk access, like any other hard drive)
    • Will my bootcamp drive be safe, I will still be able to boot from it?
I was also thinking about this:
I saw that it is possible to make bootable USB flash drive with installation. If I do that, and if I phisically unplug all other drives except a new one, then do installation, shut it down, and plug back all other drives, will everything work? Will I have triple boot when I press option key during start-up? Does all this makes sense at all to you?
Finally, does anyone have some experience with Mac Pro 2010 + ATI 5870 with Yosemite? Is it smooth, no problems with graphics or some other things?
I will really appreciate some answer about all this.
    Cheers!

Some tips about Yosemite and Core Storage from MacIntouch Reader Reports on Yosemite:
    Ric Ford [MacInTouch]
Yosemite's changes have led to questions and confusion about disk formatting and partitioning issues, backward compatibility, and dual-booting Mac OS X 10.6 and Yosemite. Below are a few notes on these issues from an email discussion (questions, tips and clarifications are welcome).
Core Storage changes debuted in OS X 10.7 Lion, with Apple's new FileVault 2 whole-disk encryption and hidden Recovery Partition.
Generally, running OS X 10.7 and up shouldn't corrupt or convert the HFS+ partitions used by pre-OS X 10.7 systems (still supported in later OS X versions). There are, however, a few special cases to beware, and this is where things get confusing. Here are some specific issues:
    1) FileVault 2 encryption and "Fusion" drives both depend on Core Storage, so applying those to any partition will render it inaccessible by pre-OS X 10.7 systems.
    2) Yosemite's installation process silently converts a partition to Core Storage, incompatible with Mac OS X 10.6 and earlier. Ars Technica's review describes this issue.
    3) Running Disk Utility's "repair" function in Yosemite against a Mac OS X 10.6 (HFS+) partition has caused problems in some cases, such as making the Mac OS X 10.6 partition unbootable.
(A search for Core Storage on MacInTouch will turn up more discussion and tips.)

  • Trying to update Mac OS X 10.8.5 on a Mac Pro 2010 platform.  The App Store starts the downloading, than stops.  Error (102).  Any idea what goes wrong?  Thx

Just installed Mac OS X 10.8.5  on a Mac Pro 2010 platform.
The App Store shows there is an upgrade, so I click the download button.
After about 2 hrs the process stops and an  Error (102) appears on the screen.

You just now installed 10.8.5? Did you purchase that at the app store?
What is the upgrade being offered?
FWIW, you are not running iOS on a Mac Pro (we are talking about the desktop tower Mac Pro, right?)

  • Why is the boot time on my mac pro 2010 slower than my 2010 core 2 duo 13 mbp?

Why is the boot time on my mac pro with clean install of lion around 34 sec on my mac pro 2010 2.8 quad core, when it is only around 17 sec on my 13 mbp 2.67 core 2 duo?
The mac pro uses around 13 seconds from i hit the power button til i hear the chime and see the grey screen.
Is it because it uses time to find the wireless keyboard, trackpad and cinema display?
Mac pro has 16 gb ram and 240 gb ocz agility 3 ssd, macbook pro has a intel 120 gb ssd (320 i think) and 8 gb of ram, so the mac pro has more umpf....

Well it might take a little longer since POST (power-on self test) needs to check more memory.
But try doing a smc and pram reset and see if that helps.

  • Sond problems on new Mac Pros (2010)??? Buying new tower advice.

    Hi all!!!
Has any one here have sound problems with the new Mac Pros (2010)??? I hear they
still have sound "pops" or something like that as with the 2009 MP. I'm looking
to buy a new MP since my G5 tower just died today (RIP) so need a new tower but need
to know if this sound issue is still there. BTW any advice on what I should buy for my next tower
would be welcomed too!!! I have a 2.5mhz LC G5 and I basically work with Photoshop, iMovie, Final
cut Express and almost every thing else and games too. I herd that the single 6 core (3.33mhz) is
a wise choice compared to a 12 core. Can I still use my 10.5 OSX (PPC) on the new Tower and then
update it to 10.6? Will be getting 12gigs of ram from OWC, NOT paying $1000+ to get 12 gigs from
Apple. Can I still use my 1.5GB/s(speed) hard drives? I know that the Mac Pros uses the 3Gb/s HD if
so I could fill the Mac Pro with my 2 G5's HD.
    Thanks for any advice!!!!

    Hey there!!
Why would Apple continue offering that vid card in the store as an option and still talk about
it in the Mac section of it's web site???? Are you sure it's not the PC version of the 5870? I didn't
read any info on the net about it (AppleInsider, MacRumours etc...) I've just made a search on Yahoo
and Google and it says that it affects the 5770 too and what I could read it's PC related here's the
    clip:
"+*AMD has confirmed that a previously reported issue of grey lines or screens with certain Radeon HD 5000 GPUs affects both the 5700 and 5800 series.*+
+Earlier this week, it emerged that many 5000 series users were experiencing problems with crashing and grey or colored lines appearing on his or her display. The grey screens and hangups were occurring while users were gaming, watching movies or in some cases, when the computer was just sitting idle.+
+When users contacted customer service they were told the issue was caused by a *Windows 7 update*. ATI recommended a clean install of the graphics card driver as a possible fix, stating this had solved some users problems. The ATI Catalyst 10.1 release notes (published Wednesday) note the problem as a known issue; however, *it's described as a problem affecting users of all versions of Windows and not just Windows 7.*+
+Today Dave Erskine, an AMD spokesperson, informed us that, "only a small number of ATI Radeon HD 5800 series and ATI Radeon HD 5700 series cards are exhibiting the behavior," and that the team is closing in on a fix for the apparently software related issue.+
+"The team is testing a driver hotfix and initial tests indicate that it resolves the issue," Mr Erskine said. "We need to test it further but we expect to make the hotfix available shortly."+
So I don't think its Mac related. Thanks for the info but still getting that Vid card anyway.
    Thanks

The upgrade I'm interested is for OS X  v.10.8.5...
...The App Store page shows 2 different upgrades:
Mountain Lion  (10.8.5)  Software Upgrade,  and
    Yosemite FREE upgrade
If the App Store is showing 10.8.5 as an update, what do you currently have installed? The final update to Mountain Lion was 10.8.5, and since the basic OS installation of Mountain Lion is no longer offered in the App Store, that would suggest you're currently at an earlier version of Mountain Lion - 10.8.x where x=less than 5. If that's the case, I'd suggest getting the 10.8.5 update. There is also a Supplemental Update for 10.8.5 and that may be what the App Store is offering.

If the Mac's firmware was updated, you can try this Internet Recovery:
Hold down Command + Option + R during restart or bootup; hold until you see a spinning globe (takes up to 10 minutes). Once in the Utilities window, use Disk utility to wipe the drive, then return to the window and choose to reinstall OS X. If that works, the OS will be installed without being tied to an Apple ID.
FWIW, if the firmware was updated, you will not be able to use the Snow leopard disk to install - I just did several tests and it does not work. You can, however, possibly install the SL onto an external drive and then clone it to the internal or (if you have a clone), boot from that and clone it back - I just tested that as well.
If the firmware was not updated, then you can use the SL install disk.

  • Mac Pro 2010 USB issues

    Hello,
This problem started about a week or two ago. I have a Mac Pro 2010 6-core model, and the USB ports on it (both front and back) have started to only "occasionally" work. First, my keyboard stopped working after waking from sleep, printing will stop midway through a page saying "lost connection to printer," and it is hit-or-miss if the computer will sync my iphone or not (but will still charge it for some reason...).
Restarting my computer *sometimes* temporarily fixes this issue, updating the OS temporarily fixed it too.
Right now, I am limited to using the 3 ports on my monitor for USB connections, and surprise! Printing stopped mid-way through a page, "lost connection."
Can anyone help me figure out what's going on before I can't even use the USB ports on my monitor? I can't think of anything that I've installed or attached to the ports recently that would cause any form of interference.
    Thank you

Have you tried doing an SMC reset?

I have a Mac Pro 2010 Twelve Core and need to add more usb ports to it. I would like them to be internal, but I don't know what I should go for, I've seen that they can be picked up for a reasonable price and need a little more advice.
