Zoom to fit doesn't work with Jpegs (works with pdfs)

Note: we are not talking about zoom to fit for pdf, etc but ONLY about zoom to fit for jpegs and similar graphics files.
The problem: starting with Snow Leopard if you have a small picture in actual size but expand the window then click zoom to fit the picture will not expand to fit the larger window (yes it reduces resolution). Please don't tell me it works fine for PDFs, we know it does but talking about jpegs and similar graphics. Dozens have reported this problem but the response was to disregard the postings and then archive them. Does everyone have the same problem with JPEGS under Snow Leopard (with Jpegs only)? Anyone have a solution? A year ago someone posted and had dozens reply. Here is the posting a year ago:
"Hello, just checking to see whether other people are having the same problem with Snow Leopard. In Preview, if you resize the window and then click View --> Zoom to Fit, it simply resets to actual size. In Leopard, it would resize the picture to fit the window.
Is this broken for others? "

If you want Apple's engineers to address your issue, then you'll have to take the time to register and report it via its bugreporter system; otherwise, your complaints are just rants and won't be addressed. Here's a quote from an Apple employee that worked with AppleScript:
+"Even if we already know about the issue, bug reports help guide prioritization and may provide more information to help us reproduce a problem or help ensure an enhancement meets your specific needs.+
+When reporting bugs, please provide detailed steps. In the case of AppleScript, a sample script that reproduces or illustrates the issue and which is as short and clear as possible helps immeasurably. (The ideal case is when the problem can be reproduced by running a script in Script Editor, without using any additional applications. If the problem requires sending events to another application, be sure to note whether the problem only occurs with that application.+
+For enhancement requests, it helps to include a description of your general needs, not just specific UI or behavioral changes. It helps us to understand how you wish to use the software, which helps guide larger design changes."+
If the process isn't worth your while or you don't think they're doing it correctly, then these forums are not the place to voice your objections.
What isn't worth my while is responding to your continual posts telling me to jump through a million hoops, in territory completely foreign to me, just to describe a simple problem. Applescripts, larger design changes, sample scripts, my general needs? Come on man, one feature of a basic program is not functioning properly, this is not rocket science, nor does it entail a great deal of complicated & detailed data! And really, if these forums are not the place to voice problems with the functioning of Apple's basic software, what are they for?

  • Problems with JPEG colors with MP Navigator EX 2.0 and Canon Pixma MP980

    Hi,
    I'm scanning my huge old slide connection with a Canon Pixma MP980. I use MP Navigator EX 2.0 with wireless connection to the MP and use the "Open Scanner Driver" option to be able to fine-tune picture quality. I've experimented with different settings, and have scanned a lot of slides with the color profile option where colors are automatically matched to my (tuned) screen profile. But sometimes I end up with far too saturated JPEGs, and I can't understand what I'm doing wrong. The strange thing is that the images look good in the preview, and they also look good if I save them as TIFFs. I really want to avoid the TIFFs, though, they don't give me any more dynamic range than the JPEGs and are 10x the size.
    Does anyone have an idea what setting I might have gotten wrong in the setup? Or if this could be a incompatibility with recent Quicktime updates, since it used to work fine for a while?

    Not much response here, but I finally found the solution myself: By setting the Color Preferences to "Color Matching, the source to my scanner, and - this is the important part - the target to the standard sRGB color profile, I get pretty good results.

    Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
    If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
    Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
    This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
    Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
    Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
    from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
    In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
    Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
    Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
    Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
    Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • Associate original Raw files with JPEGs tagged with metadata?

    Before the advent of Aperture, I used to use Adobe Camer Raw (ACR) to do all my raw conversions, and save the settings in sidecar XMP files. Then for 10-20% of the files, I'd do some more processing in Photoshop and generate PSDs. These were all my master files (raw + PSD).
    That was fine as far as it went, but it didn't allow any serious organizing or searching capability.
    So I would do a batch export of highest quality JPEGs of all these master files, and import those into iPhoto. I'd then rate, keyword, comment, and organize the photos in iPhoto. If I ever wanted to go back and make a 13x19-inch print, I'd use iPhoto to find the file (via metadata such as keywords, date, album, comments, etc.), then use that filename to go back and find the original raw (or PSD) file and print from that.
    Of course, aperture obviates the need to have 2 independent sets of images like that for new images.
    However, what if I want to bring my old images into Aperture? I'll import the iPhoto library, and get the benefit of all the metadata tagging (ratings, keywords, etc.), but still have to go back to and separately import the directories of original raw files. But then the JPEGs and the raws are not associated in any way.
    I have not changed any filenames, so the JPEGs and raws have exactly the same filenames except for their extension. Is there any way in Aperture to associate them with each other, or automatically apply the metadata from the JPEGs to the raw files? An Automator action maybe?
    Thanks for any assistance.

    Well, I have an idea that might help...
    Try importing both JPG and RAW files into the same project. Then view all the files in the project, and auto-stack... sicne the JPG and RAW files were taken together they should group, I am guessing in the same way for all of them (RAW on one side of the stack, JPG on the other).
    Once you figure out which side is which in the stacks, use the Lift & Stamp tool to copy settings from each JPG into the RAW version. To make this quicker, select either the Lift or Stamp tool from the tool bar (I'd reccomend lift) and then hold down the Option key to change the tool into a stamp tool on the fly. Thus the process would be, click on a JPG to Lift, hold down option and click on the adjoining RAW to stamp. Repeat for each image, using the Project management view which is all thumbnails. Kind of manual but you should be able to finish quickly.
    Good luck with the project.

  • Toggle zoom to fit selection key not working

    I am using the default key command "z" for "Toggle zoom to fit selection or all contents" which works to zoom in but does not toggle back out when hitting "z" again. Does anyone else have this problem or a possible solution to get the key command to toggle instead of just zoom in?

    I've tried using a different UNUSED key comb and it's still not working. Also tried unlearning toggle track zoom and same problem. Must be something else.

  • How to make a small doc zoom to print on a larger page, print to fit doesn't work

    I have a pdf I created that ended up filling only 1/2 of a letter size page, I've tried print to fit area and it doesn't increase the size. I would like to zoom the page to fit a 11 x 17 sheet or at least fill the entire 81/2 x 11. How do I do this?

    What was the size of the paper you selected. I just opened a PDF and then in the print menu selected zoom to fit and selected the printer property to be a large sheet and it worked fine. Did you actually select the paper size in the printer properties, or is the paper the size that you are talking about.
    There may be an issue of how you are creating the PDF also. There are many ways and it is hard to help when we have no idea of what you were doing. Give the basic steps of what application you are in and what steps you take that has a problem.

  • Scheduling Gantt: How to work with the "zoom-to-fit" drop-down

    I'm trying to figure out how to work with the "zoom-to-fit" drop-down on the scheduling Gantt dvt control. It has choices in the drop-down that are not appropriate for my project. The documented purpose of this drop-down is to allow the user to zoom to a level that would allow a certain time range to "fit" within the current window. The choices start at "1 Week" and go up through "2 Weeks", "1 Month" etc. The problem is that the projects I'm displaying are generally just a couple of days long, and consist of many small tasks. So even 1 Week is too big. Also, no matter what I pick in this drop down, nothing happens.
    So my questions are these:
    1. Can I change the choices in this drop-down? If so, how do I do that?
    2. If not, then how can I remove this drop-down? (I figure I probably can if I disable "zoom", but I don't want to do that.)
    3. How do I get this to actually do something? I assume maybe I have to code some listener somewhere, but if so, how do I do that.
    Thanks for any hints, tips and advice!

    Currently, we do not allow customization of zoom-to-fit. Please file an ER. We could add a param to featuresOff attribute to disable/remove zoom-to-fit from the toolbar without disabling/removing zoom.

  • Neither Automatically Resize nor Zoom to Fit working

    Hello out there in Appleland,
    Neither Automatically Resize nor Zoom to Fit is working in Preview 5.0.3 under Snow Leopard.  Zoom to Fit acts just like Actual Size or <Command> 0 and Automatically resize doesn't work at all.  This must be and bug, so please explain how this can be permanently fixed, even at the command line level.
    Thank you.
    Best regards,
    Bob
    Denver, CO

    I've found out a little more about Preview and its bug through a process of elimination.
    After examining Automatically Resize for Preview 3.0.9 on my old PowerBook G4 with OS 10.4.11, Preview 4.1 on my iMac with OS 10.5.8, and now Preview 5.0.3 on my MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8, I discovered they all work the same way.  When Automatically Resize is checked the image is only resized when the window is reduced but never when the window is enlarged to a size greater than the image's Actual Size, which is a worthless feature for smaller images.  I don't think this is the way it is supposed to work, but I may be wrong.
    Where 5.0.3 differs from the other versions of Preview is in Zoom to Fit.  Under the View Menu, Zoom to Fit is grayed out unless the image stretches beyond the borders of the window (i.e. Automatically Resize toggled off).  In this case, the image will be reduced to the size of the window when Zoom to Fit is selected.  On the other hand, if the image is smaller than the size of the window, Zoom to Fit is not grayed out but neither does it enlarge the image to the size of the window when selected.  In other words, Zoom to Fit in 5.0.3 is only good for reducing an image to fill a smaller window but never for enlarging an image to fill a bigger window if that window is larger than the Actual Size of the image.
    Perhaps the problem is with Preview 5.0.3 failing to access com.apple.Preview.ImageSizingPresets.plist since removing all the Preview plists and launching the application anew does not recreate this particular plist.  Also, the modified date on the original com.apple.Preview.ImageSizingPresets.plist never seems to change.
    This is a damned annoying bug and should have been fixed when Snow Leopard was the standard.  In my opinion, the fact that this wasn't caught reveals Apple's slipping standards and a concentration on their growing market in mobile devices.  I feel I have a right to say this since I've been a loyal Mac user since the early 1980s.
    For those who suggest I move to Lion or beyond, you can keep the economy going with your new software purchases.  For now, I'm going to continue using Rosetta and my old, third-party applications in Snow Leopard.

  • Zoom-to-fit Not Working in Preview, & other features, too.

    I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, and have since found that Preview is not working properly. This is something I use almost every day, & it not working has created a real disruption to my work-flow. I've noticed that others have complained about this, and have been doing so since at least October of 2009! Apple has obviously not addressed this, as I've done all the updates, and still it doesn't work. The Zoom-to-fit won't work, altho it sometimes will when there's only a little bit of space left, & sometimes when the image is too big, it may reduce. However, the "automatically resize" doesn't work either, and some other features work erratically as well. Sometimes when I change the resolution of the picture, it will zoom to fit, & sometimes well, so many things don't work, or do, but so rarely, I can't even remember all the instances.
    Does anyone actually have some kind of work around, or solution? I've done the trash all the preferences, etc., which didn't do anything, and am stumped at this point, thanks...

    Tom Gewecke wrote:
    does Apple really know about this, and are just ignoring it or are they working on a fix, or ?
    Surely you understand that you are not talking to Apple here, just other users like yourself. Whether Apple knows about it depends on whether you or someone else has used the bugreporter or feedback channel to tell them. As for what action they are taking, nobody here is ever going to be able to give you an answer.
    Yes, I do understand that, and my question was in response to being told that
    "Preview in SL is broken", by one of the "experts" when I posted my own thread about it not working properly. To me, that response implied this was a known condition, & that this person knew that Apple knows, & since this was all he said, w/no other advice, it further implied that a fix would come out whenever it will, and there's no use in pursuing it further. So, my question was to anyone else to affirm or deny that is or isn't the case.
    Plus, I've read that in fact, some employees of Apple do contribute to the discussions (as they surely should, if for no other reason, that what I just spoke of, to let us know when an issue is a known one, thus nothing else can be done until Apple releases a fix; thus preventing users from wasting time &/or screwing something up worse, attempting to fix it)
    Does Adobe Reader provide a possible replacement for Preview for your purposes?
    Don't know, I'd rather not have to open it for all the times I would simply use Preview, why have it as part of the OS if it doesn't work? I'd think Apple would fix it, or not show features it can't do. That said, your question is actually the first response I've seen yet, that at least is a possible work around, thank you.
    (another thread on the same issue was marked "answered" & closed, despite no one having offered up a fix),
    How a thread is marked is totally up to the person who started it. If you have a problem with how it was done, you need to take it up with that person I think.
    I will, but it's not the person who closed the thread, as that was done nearly two months after it was marked "Solved". And yes, it could have been archived due to no further comments, although we've no way of knowing, since there's no date of archiving shown. And that is what I'm wondering, did Apple just close it, to avoid the topic being taken to the top of the list? If this feature is broken, why haven't they fixed it, now nearly a year later???
    And I have personally reported this in several feedback forms. I refuse to sign up for the developers group, just to file a bug report, since I would have to answer all the questions in the application form without knowing what the heck I was talking about, since I am hardly a developer/programmer, techno-geek, etc., and shouldn't have to jump through all those hoops, just to report to Apple that something's screwed up! I can send bug reports via Safari w/o signing up as an advanced computer engineer, why should I have to for reporting the same with Preview? If Apple chooses to ignore feedback reports, as well as their discussion boards, then what real customer service would that be?

    The zoom in zoom out gesture doesn't work on my iPhone 5c. Like when opening an app it doesn't zoom out and opens. It also doesn't zooms in while pressing the home button to return. The gesture is just like any other Android phone. Like while closing an app by pressing the home button the icons seem like zooming in and falling back to their respective places. This thing happens in my friends' iPhones but this thing doesn't happen on my iPhone 5C. Please help.. I am unable to find anything wrong with the settings either.

    I have another query though. Is it possible to always logged into my Gtalk from iPhone? I am using an app called Gtalk Lite. But every time I double press the home button and swipe up the apps to close them from running in the background Gtalk lite logs me off. I have to log in to Gtalk lite again. I was looking for something like that happens on Android phones. You are always logged in even after you close them from running in the background. And also is it possible to log in to more than one gmail account on Gtalk in iPhone?

  • [ID CC, JS] textFrame.fit() doesn't work

    Hello,
    I’ve no idea, why the .fit() option doesn’t work. Can someone please assist!
    This is the starting point: The script duplicates an object (text frame) on a specific master page (where some object reside, which are used throughout the publication) and moves it to the actual page. There it is filled with XML data and should be fitted FRAME_TO_CONTENT:
    _toptitleFrame = duplicateIT ("label", _currPageSpread, _labelledDEFsItems, _dok);
    _theNode.xmlElements.itemByName("label").placeXML(_toptitleFrame);
    _toptitleFrame.fit(FitOptions.FRAME_TO_CONTENT);
    _toptitleFrame.move([(213-(_toptitleFrame.geometricBounds[3]-_toptitleFrame.geometricBounds[1])), 12.7]);
    function duplicateIT (_pageItemName, _moveToPage, _labelledDEFsItems, _dok) {
      _theImg = _pageItem.duplicate(_pageMaster);
      _theImg.move(_moveToPage);
        return _theImg;
    Actually the _toptitleFrame.move works perfectly, but the _toptitleFrame.fit(...) doesn’t work at all. When I command »fit content« in the UI it works perfectly.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Tobias

    Hi,
    I first though you might have an issue using itemByName as XMLElements has no itemByName methods but it looks like the script engine can deal with it. I did a quick try here and it works fine.
    You should investigate the _toptitleFrame prior and after the fit operation to get for example its bounds. Did they change in the script scope ?

    Yup - nothing happens.  I then took the same VGA cable and plugged it into my friend's iPad1 and it worked perfectly when she opened Keynote.  My understanding is that the iPad2 mirrors the entire screen, so no need to go into any specific application in order to project to the screen, right?  Do I need to download any specific app or change any settings in order to be able to project the screen using VGA?
    Sorry - novice at this.  Not very tech minded either...

    If you think you're insane now, try maintaining those pop up menus.
    As far as I know, these menus have not been updated since FW 8, so
    they are at least two versions old.
    Save yourself a lot of grief by avoiding those menus. There are many
    other products on the market which do a much better job of creating
    and maintaining this type of navigation structure.
    Read this link before you climb any higher on this slippery slope:

    There was another blog post by the fellow who originally wrote the pop
    up menu feature, but I can't seem to locate it. Even he says stay away
    from them.
    Not the answer you probably want, but I hope it helps, nonetheless.
