0 ppm on final cut volume meter?

Hi,
I received some audio suggestions from our broadcaster and they said the peak should be up to 0 ppm.
1) how much is 0 ppm on the final cut studio pro 3 - volume meter (the dbfs one)?
2) how much is 0 ppm to db also?
Thanks,
aemi

Suggestions?
You want very accurate specifications, not suggestions.
Tolerances will vary from one broadcaster to the other, most will say around -18dfbs for shows. There may be some leeway for commercials because no advertiser wants their commercial to be quieter than the others.
They might also specify average and minimum audio levels.
0 ppm = 0dB Analog.
Note that you should never ever go over 0dfbs because that is the absolute limit in digital audio. There is no more headroom, unlike analog.
A good spec sheet will detail analog and digital levels exactly . Stick to it.

  • Final Cut x exporting different volumes

I have multiple nested clips in a single project.  For some reason, when I export them individually through compressor (I'm using the same setting for each) They export at different volume levels.  They sound and look the same in Final Cut so I have to check every single one once they've been exported and it's a nightmare.  Anyone have any ideas?  I'm using FCPX 10.1.1 and the latest version of compressor on Mavericks.

No ideas, but export one of the problem clips as a master file. Bring it into Compresssor and after processing, check the audio. Is it also a problem with that workflow?

  • 2 Final Cut  / xRaid / "Networking"

I have inherited an xRaid network. Only an xRaid and 2 G5's w/ Final Cut. Current configuration: 1 fibre cable connected from Fibre card on G5 #1 to Lower Port on xRaid. Same set up on G5 #2 connected to Upper Port on xRaid.
Is there a way to connect both sides of the xRaid together? If not, I need suggestions about what kind of Switch / Hub solution to connect BOTH G5s to Both sides of the xRaid.
I'm hitting a severe bottle neck when trying to access video data that was digitized on the "other" computer's xRaid. I have to share the mounted drive through the 10/100 network.
Other questions: What MODE is the fibre channel of the xRaid? What do you call the CONNECTORS on the end of the cables that came with the system?
    Mac OS X (10.4)

I use MetaSAN and like it.
It is perfect for a small 2 edit bay setup. It is $1K per machine, but you don't need to have a dedicated MetaData Controller. It performs very well and can be easily disabled for normal OSX disk maintance. Unlike xSAN, MetaSAN is very easy to use and works without as much risk to your drive's filesystem.
Check eBay for a $700 Brocade 3200 fibre switch. These are affordable now that many copanies are only buying 4Gb fibre hardware. They are very nice and perfect for a small SAN like you need. Also get some LC to LC fibre cables and a bunch of SFP adapters for these if you plan on running the cables more than a few feet from the xServe RAID. I got a dozen 30 meter lc cables and another dozen SFP trancievers on ebay for $150.
Total cost of this upgrade would be in the $3K range. That's cheap for a SAN.
The other alternative is to look at an iSCSI solution which shares your volume out to the other G5 over ethernet, but using iSCSI protocol (instead of the lower latency Appletalk protocol). iSCSI is the next big thing for budget oriented SAN's and you would be wise to consider it if you don't have the budget to work in the Fibre world.
I would RAID 50 both channels of the RAID into one megadrive using OSX Disk Utility, then install MetaSAN one machine at at time. Just remember to never let any computer on to your Fibre switch (unless you know how to zone it) without first installing MetaSAN on that machine. Since MetaSAN uses plain old HFS plus format on the disk, it will mount locally to any machine connected to the fibre switch. Since xSAN uses it's own, odd disk format, there is less danger of things getting messed up this way.
    good luck.

  • Project too new for final cut 6.0.2 error message

My colleague at work has edited a rough cut on her Quad Core Intel computer. I'm using a Power Mac G5, and was able to download the project onto my desktop, but I get this message every time I try to open it: "This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut." We're both using FCP 6.0.2, I've done all the software updates I can, but I still receive the message. Does anyone know what I can do?

Did the person use the same workstation you are using? If you have the other person's volume mounted on your desktop, and you are definitely running the same OS, and you have the same version of FCP, then try opening the original file, not a copy. If it opens, do a *"save as"* instead of using a duplicated copy of the project.
Also, if they are using a different workstation, they may have another 3rd party component installed that they used, (maybe a filter or codec), that would interfere with it opening. The best way to make sure FibreJet works seemlessly in a multi-station work environment is to make absolutely sure that every station is a clone of the others. If you do an update on one, you have to do it on all. If you add an application, make sure you add it to all stations.
If you are using a different workstation, try to open it with the other station, then mount your desktop to that station through the LAN, and do a *"save as"* to your desktop, then try opening it from there.
Of course, do all this after trying to zip it before copying it. It only takes a second and would eliminate one aspect of the possible problem.

  • Final Cut unable to open

    So I've got a problem.
I had to restore my system to its factory settings, and I got Final Cut Pro 5 a few years back when I was in High School from my video teacher, under one of those education packages that works for like 15 or whatever different computers to install FCP. So it's a very legal copy.
When I had to restore, I knew I couldn't reinstall the program, so I had to move FCP to my External Hard drive. I had been running it off my external anyways for a while and it worked fine, just because I needed the space on my internal for applications I had to run without the external. But after I restored and installed Snow Leopard, I can't open FCP. I had back'd up my computer with Time Machine before the restore, so I put the Application Support files from the backup back into my Library>Application Support folder. But it doesn't open, but this time it gives me the error code and what not. So if this helps anybody, here you go.

I took a look at it and couldn't really find what was going on, so any help is appreciated.

The Final Cut software that I had installed was also the same software that we were running on our Macs at the high school. 3 of those Macs were iMacs with Intel processors. I didn't think I had been running FCP that functioned on the PPC Operating systems, because it's the same software that was working on the iMacs, but now that I think of it, we had PPCs running it too. I hadn't had any issues with it other than the occasional random crash that was solved by a program restart. If it was PPC based, wouldn't it -not- let me install it on the computer? Like I said before, I had been running it on my laptop with ease for a couple years with no large problems.
I had an issues like this when I tried to boot up my Adobe Photoshop from Hard Drive after I restored, and it was solved by taking my application Support folder and some other random files from my backup and putting them in my library. I assume that the movement of files is the problem and I'm just missing some minor things, but it says I'm running a PPC version of the software?

  • Is there a way to run Motion and Final Cut Pro on Separate Machines?

Is there a way to run Motion and Final Cut Pro from the same Final Cut Studio license on separate machines? We hadn't realised when we bought Final Cut Studio that it wouldn't allow this. Our editor doesn't use motion, and while I mainly use After Effects on our motion graphics machine, I was wanting to try using motion for some particle effects. Unfortunately, it won't let me open it while Final Cut is running on our editor's machine. I can understand not letting two copies of same application run under the same serial number at the same time, but it would be nice to be able to use both programs that we own concurrently. At very least it would be good to warn you that this isn't possible in the product description, not in some fine print license agreement once you have already bought the software.
    -Matt

I do not know of any software, in any platform that can operate from the same license over a network simultaneously. This is the exact reason for the existence of Volume Licensing. If for example a project ran in each one of the included applications from different sources that were not an active network, I doubt you would have a problem.Like, doing a project at work and geting the outcome with the Powerbook at home...Sorta!

  • Final Cut Studion 2 Install Failure on 1st Disc

I had to reinstall FCS2 after a reinstall of Leopard (along with all the updates). When I checked the FCS2 libraries, none of the pro apps could find any of the content files. The files were there, but somehow the links in FCS2 got messed up, so I figured I would reinstall FCS2 and save myself some grief trying to figure out what got broke.
    Famous last words....
When I try to install FCS2 (4 times now), I start the install from the main install disc, go with the defaults, and it fails about 2 minutes in with the following error:

I've installed from these discs before without any problem, but this time it errors out with the same problem every time.
I have checked and repaired the permissions on the destination HDD, but no joy.
Can anyone tell me why the installed failed and what I can do so the install will continue?
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks, X
All the ram has been replace with new Crucial sticks as when I had the box in for service in Dec (still on Apple care, now not), a daughter card was replaced and I was told I had bad ram. Prior to servicing, the AHT failed almost immediately on a FAN error.
I was doing extensive testing this weekend to, hopefully, eliminate any possible problems on my end, which I have pretty much done, short of wiping the startup drive. I guess now I am only left with making a bootable backup, and dropping the box off with service (hopefully, they will grandfather the SO from Dec to this work) and let them do what the will.....
Anyway, I pretty sure you are right about it being a hardware issue as +99% of the kernel panics occur on CPU3, and the majority while current task is Kernel_task
    Thanks for the input...

  • Is my issue with Final Cut Pro or my Macbook pro?

I'm going to try to be as thorough as possible in explaining my situation because I can't figure this problem out and it's exhausting me. I have an early 2011 macbook pro with the 2.2 ghz processor. I upgraded to 16gb of ram almost a year ago. I've been using Final Cut Pro 7 on this computer for several years now without issue and have made no setting changes that would prompt my problems. A few months ago my battery decided to stop holding a charge and now just registers 0%. Around the same time, while editing a short video my computer began behaving like it was overheating. It would crash, restart, crash and then restart again. After I did a disk and permissions repair it began to work normally again and I haven't had any more crashing issues. Around this period of time I began noticing that when my computer turns on it doesn't register the correct time and date. Given a few moments it corrects itself, but for some strange reason it was doing that every time.
Anyway, around that time I tried to upgrade to Mavericks and experienced an issue during installation because my hard drive was apparently damaged in some way and the installation couldn't be completed. I restored my previous OS and tried to carry on as I was with the damaged hard drive for as long as I could. I was still able to do everything I needed on the computer. I could still edit videos with Final Cut. I could still browse the internet. I could still stream Netflix.
About a month ago Final Cut stopped working. I could open the program, start a new project and import media files, but when I dragged them into the timeline, they just stuttered (audio would play but video would lag and then jump several frames then lag and jump frames). At the time I assumed this was because my hard drive finally gave up, but I was still able to do other functions like browse the internet and stream basketball games with nba league pass (granted they weren't crisp hd - on a side note, netflix was also behaving oddly. when I would browse through my list, it wouldn't stop scrolling when I moved the mouse away.) so I assumed the hard drive was my issue.
I just replaced my hard drive with an ssd (crucial m500) and upgraded to mavericks (10.9.1) and now I am having the same issues. Netflix behaves fine. Basketball games stream fine. My battery is still dead (obviously that wasn't going to change). I get the wrong date and time for a minute, but I'm thinking that's battery related now. But Final Cut still lags to the point where I can't use it. Video clips also won't render. I thought this might be an issue with the Final Cut program so I uninstalled it and reinstalled it, but it still did the same thing. Assuming I hadn't correctly/completely uninstalled it, I downloaded HitFilm 2 (an editing program that had a free download promotion at the time), figuring using a different program, if i could edit video with it, then my issue is with Final Cut and not my computer. Unfortunaely, I'm having the same lagging issues with HitFilm as I was with Final Cut.
I'm at a loss as to what the problem is. Sorry if this was a rambling post, but I wanted to get as much of the background out there as possible, should it provides anyone with a clue as to what is the issue here. Does anyone have any idea what could be at fault here? I'm stumped.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 Vs 3

I wanted to look at getting something more then iMovie and saw the Final Cut Studio 2 is for sale this week for $50 while Final Cut Studio 3 is still $300 at my campus bookstore (education licenses). Is there a $250 difference between the two versions that someone that will just be using it for a few home move projects will be able to detect?
    Message was edited by: firemandan900

Also why does Apple charge so much more directly for the Academic version ($900 3 times as much) as my school can sell it to me direct, including the 10 lbs of instruction manuals? Is it just a volume agreement my school has?

  • Final Cut Studio 2 and New Macbooks with Nvidia graphics

Do the new Macbooks announced today (10/14/2008) meet the minimum system requirements for running Final Cut Studio 2?

Lecturing? Really? Not hardly, but I'll answer your query as succinctly as possible.
Will the new Macbook run Final Cut Studio 2? I will wager that FCP will operate, DVD SP will operate and Soundtrack Pro will operate. I highly doubt Color will operate and am not sure about Motion due to the graphics card.
That should answer your question. To "lecture" some more, where will you have media stored and how will you get media, any sort of media into these applications?
As far as graphics and video are concerned, that distinction has been met above. I'm sure the Macbook will operate Photoshop with no problem.
But again, why not check the minimum tech specs for yourself?

  • Final Cut Pro 7 Setup/workflow

    Hello there,
I work at a small company and we are starting to build large amount of raw tape and capture scratch data. I am writing to learn about best practices, procedures, and troubleshooting techniques. We have two editors who both work off Macs on a 1 gig Ethernet network using Final Cut Pro 7. The data lives on a remote storage device, synology volume. They are currently connecting to the device using AFP and creating projects over the network.
    Mac Devices:
    iMac 27 OSX 10.9.5
    16GB RAM
    512 SSD
    Synology:
    4x1 gig E bonded
    40 TB usable
    Small Project :
         Raw Data: approximately 13GB
         Capture Scratch:  approximately 15GB
Final Cut 7 project file:  170KB
    Large Project :
         Raw Data: approximately 135GB
         Capture Scratch:  approximately 345GB
Final Cut 7 project file:  11MB
The two editors are experiencing different level of lags and poor editing experience. The editors work off the remote volumes, they don't move the data (capture scratches) to their local drives when they are working on these projects.
I have a number of questions about to how approach this:
    1. What are best practices for setting up -editor machines/volumes/etc?
    2. What transfer/mount protocols should they use AFP/SMB/NFS ?
    3. What software can I use to get benchmarks for read/write to the remote volumes ?
    4. If we went to a 10Gig E network switch, should we upgrade the nic cards on the iMacs? should we use Fiber optic ? copper?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Media@relay

Is this Synology volume rated for the high demands of video playback? Most generic servers companies employ for data isn't up to the rigors and speeds needed for video editing, especially two stations needing to access video at the same time. If you plan on having a server for video, you need to make sure it's fast enough for video work.
Both of those projects really have very little video data. Get 1TB drives for both stations and work off the media on them. FW800 at least...no USB2. USB3 is fine, if the computers have USB 3 connections.  Thunderbolt is best, if they have those connections.

  • Is it possible to install Final Cut Pro on a External TB Hard Drive

I would like to buy an external TB drive for my iMac and was wondering if it is possible to just run Final Cut Studio and all of it's apps off of a TB drive?

No. The Final Cut Studio applications must be on the same volume as Mac OS X.
You can put the accompanying content, such as motion templates etc on another drive.

  • How can I get a version of Final Cut Pro X that works on OS Mountain Lion?

I just downgraded my laptop to its original OS (Lion) and will be upgrading soon to Mountain Lion because this laptop is too old to work with Mavericks or Yosemeti. So far Final Cut Pro X, Motion and Compressor (which I had originally purchased when I first bought the computer) do not work. Will Final Cut Pro X work on Mountain Lion? If not, what can I do to get a version that will work?
    Thanks!

10.0.9 is the latest version compatible with Mountain Lion.   I found this article which may help you:
    http://thefcpxeditor.tumblr.com/post/70885235923/what-i-can-run-fcp-x-10-1-and-1 0-0-9-on-the-same
At the time it was written it was apparently possible to download from the app store with a computer running ML.  Maybe this is still the case.
FCP 10.1. has video requirements which are not met by older machines.  I'm not sue about 10.0.9 but that might possibly be a 'gotcha'
I'm a bit confused though since if you downgraded you laptop to Lion but Mountain Lion is the latest OS it will run then you must have been running ML already

  • Final Cut Studio (ver 1.0) won't install on brand new 2.8 ghz intel coreduo

I just bought a new 15inch MacBook Pro (4 GB memory) and went to install Final Cut Studio (ver 1.0) and then install the Final Cut Studio (HD) upgrade, but when I try to install Final Cut Studio (ver 1.0) I get this error: "Your computer does not have the hardware required to run this software. See the Read Me for details." All of the minimum requirements seem to be easily met, and I've run this old version of Final Cut Studio and the HD upgrade on my previous and older macbook, so I'm really confused on this error message. I can't find anything online. Anyone have any idea what is causing this hardware error?

I am getting the same message."Your computer does not have the hardware required to run this software. See the Read Me for details." I have FCP 5 and I am trying to install it on my new MacBook Pro. FCP 5.0 worked fine on my other mac and Im getting this message on my new one! any thoughts?
