06/11 iPhoto library compatibility?

Morning all,
I have 2 sizeable iphoto libraries in iPhoto 05 & 06 on my old g4 powermac dual 1.25 MDD running OSX 10.4.11 and am thinking of going to iLife 11 shortly.
Despite the downsides to iPhoto 11 I've read about on this forum and elsewhere, since all I really use iPhoto for is storage and very basic editing, once I've installed iLife 11 I'm thinking of  importing and combining the iPhoto 05/06 libraries into iphoto 11 on my customised MACMINI Server using target mode on the old g4 to do it. Is that likely to be a problem?
Thanks for ay advice/tales of your experiences, if any!

To combine the Libraries you will need the paid ($20) version of  iPhoto Library Manager
It's the only way to merge Libraries.
The workflow would be:
Back up
Install 11
Move each Library to the new location in turn. Open it with 11 to upgrade the Libraries. Take care that they don't overwrite each other!
Use Library Manager to merge them

  • Multiple users using one iPhoto library on a server

I'm working in a design company and we have a huge folder stuffed with reference images on our server. Accessing it is ok using Adobe Bridge but I recently had an idea to create an iPhoto library on the server, this would allow people to quickly find relevant images and by keyword or album. I set it up and all worked fine until I tried opening the library up on a colleagues machine. turns out the folder is 'locked' and completely unaccessable if someone else had it open. Is there a way to make the library more flexible so that more than one person can use it at one time? Thanks

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. IPhoto is not designed to be used on a network server. iPhoto is not reliable on any drive that isn't formatted OS X Extended. If the library is located on an OS X Extended formatted external HD withownership set to be ignored and connected to a Mac it can be accessed and used by other Macs. Just create a guest account that others can use to get to the external HD.
If you want multi user compatibility I suggest you look at one of the DAM (digital asset management) applications that offer that - like Media Expression. Other possible DAM applications are described and discussed at The DAM Forum.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • My iphoto library was opened remotely on a computer using a newer operating system. Now it won't open on mine!

My iphoto library was opened remotely via sharing on a computer using a newer (10.7) operating system. Now it won't open on mine (10.6). It says it needs a newwer version of iphoto, and I want this computer to stay at 10.6 for compatability with other programs. How can I access my photos?

When the library was opened you were warned this would happen.
You can restore your Library from your back up.
You can try revert the Library to the earlier version using iPhoto Library Manager
Or you upgrade to the same version.

  • IPhoto crashes even after trying to rebuild iPhoto library database.

iPhoto won't open after I synced new iPhone 5s to my Mac v10.6.8. I tried holding down the Option and Command key and this forced the iPhoto library manager to open. I then ticked to rebuild Library Manager and then it crashes again.  I also cannot back up my existing iphoto library as I am unable to locate it. I have checked for latest software updates and it appears to be update. My iphoto is version 7.1.5
The log for my error is below. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I tried holding down the Option and Command key and this forced the iPhoto library manager to open. I then ticked to rebuild Library Manager and then it crashes again.
What you have accessed here are iPhoto's own repair tools. iPhoto Library Manager is a 3rd party application.
I also cannot back up my existing iphoto library as I am unable to locate it
By default your iPhoto Library is in your Pictures Folder.
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • Cannot restore iPhoto library

My MacBook hard drive crashed and had to be replaced.  I am now running iPhoto 11 (9.3.2) which is a more recent version than my old iPhoto library (but i am not sure what version it was).  I am now trying to restore some old photos from an external backup drive.  I thought that i had just copied a version of the iPhoto library to the Backup drive in the past, however, the backup drive has multiple files/folders on it (iPhoto Library folder with many sub-folders - attachments, caches, content, data.noindex, database, library.iphoto, library6.iphoto, masters, metadata backup, modified, originals, previews, etc), instead of a single iPhoto library. When I try to open iPhoto and connect it to the external drive, I receive the following messages:
"The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto."
    I click Upgrade
"iPhoto is unable to open this Library. You have opened this photo library with a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto."
Is there another way for me to recover my old iPhoto library?  I am concerned if i just reimport the pictures, I will lose all of the metadata (Faces, Events, Places, etc).

    Jen,
Try the following (which Kmoi also suggested):
In finder, navigate to your iphoto library (via users, then selecting your username, then Pictures). Right-click (hold down control and click) the iPhoto Library. Select "Show Package Contents." The folder entitled "originals" should contain the photo files you had in your old iPhoto library. I copied this entire folder (make sure you select it and go to Edit<Copy instead of dragging it) into your Google Drive folder. I tried dragging the first time and it moved, not copied it. I then pasted into the Google Drive folder. This way I had a backup not of the iPhoto library (which is finicky in it's version compatibility, etc) but of the actual photos contained, and I wouldn't even need iPhoto to open them in an emergency. Them I dragged the photos by event folder into iPhoto once it was open, to import them and add them to the existing iPhoto library.
I came to all of this because when I tried to replace one library with another, even though they were from the same version of iPhoto, it said it wouldn't work. Problem solved, and I also have a more iron-clad backup of the photos now as well.
    Good luck.

  • Trouble opening iPhoto library in Aperture that has been transferred to an external hard drive.

I am having trouble opening my iPhoto library in Aperture now that it has been transferred to an external hard drive.
    Versions being used:
    MacBook Pro 13-inch mid-2010
    OS X v. 10.9.1 Mavericks
    Aperture v. 3.5.1
    iPhoto v. 9.5.1
Order of events: got MacBook > took pictures > created an iPhoto library > upgraded to Mountain Loin > added more photos to iPhoto library > upgraded to Mavericks > purchased and downloaded Aperture > copied iPhoto library to a 750 GB WD My Passport.
When attempting to switch to this iPhoto library while using Aperture an error stating, “Unable to Switch to Library. Aperture cannot switch to the selected library because the file system of the library’s volume is not supported.”  iPhoto can access this iPhoto library with no problem.  What is missing? Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

“Unable to Switch to Library. Aperture cannot switch to the selected library because the file system of the library’s volume is not supported.”
Aperture 3.5.1  is checking for file system compatibility, iPhoto not always.
copied iPhoto library to a 750 GB WD My Passport.
Check the filesystem on your WD drive. Did you remember to format the drive for MacOS, before you copied the library there? It needs to be formatted MacOS X Extended (Journaled) to be used with any photo library. iPhoto may be able to open the library, if the filesystem is not supported, but you are risking data loss.
You can reformat the drive with Disk Utility, if the file system is wrong (after backing up your iPhoto library to a different drive). See:
    iPhoto: Issues with FAT32-formatted drives
Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

You see the File System in the Finder's "File > Get Info" panel, when you select the drive in the Finder and use "File > Get Info" from the main menu bar or press cmd-I.

  • Transfering 09' iPhoto Library to 08' Library

I have iPhoto 09' version with a photo library on one computer that I want to transfer to iPhoto 08' on another computer.
I know how to transfer the iPhoto Library package and re-path the iPhoto to the transferred library but it prompts me that old I am installing to an old version.
Does anyone know how to make the library backwards compatible?

Just because you can multiply and I can't...
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backwards_Compatibility
In the context of telecommunications and computing a device or technology is said to be backwards or downwards compatible if it can work with input generated by an older device.[1] If products designed for the new standard can receive, read, view or play older standards or formats, then the product is said to be backward-compatible; examples of such a standard include data formats and communication protocols...
The reverse is forward compatibility, which implies that old devices allow (or are expected to allow) data formats generated by new (or future) devices, perhaps without supporting all new features. A standard supports forward compatibility if older product versions can receive, read, view or play the new standard.

  • How can I restore an iPhoto library from Time Machine (ML) - when I TM doesn't see the backup??

    Hi,
I recently did a Time Machine backup of my MacBook Pro (Mountain Lion) onto an external HDD. Around the time of the last backup, my system was behaving funny so I decided to rebuild the OS X.
Because the last TM backup was of a system that as mentioned, was somewhat 'unstable', and I only had a few backups available (didn't have TM running too long beforehand) - I decided not to use TM to 'restore' my system. I just did  a clean install of ML and planned on pulling files over manually. I'd done this before and it worked a treat.
This time ran into a snag. The backup disk TM used was an external HDD which I wanted to upgrade (suffice to say it works fine). So, I needed to move the backup.backupdb directory to my other HDD. The copy seemed to work fine ... so far so good.
I installed the new ML OS on my MacBook Pro and that was fine too. I was able to pull most of my files over by going into the TM backup and copying what I needed.
BUT, for some reason, this didn't work for the iPhoto library?
Alas, I found that you need to do a 'restore' iPhoto library file from whithin TM. So I fired up TM and noticed that it didn't recognise the old backup file located on the HDD. I.e. when I turned on TM, pointed it to the external HDD (where I copied the previous backup to), it started a fresh backup.
So ... my question is - "How do I restore the iPhoto library if I can't get to it from TM?"
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help! The last 15 years of photos are stored in this library!

    Hi ...
I've found a solution to my problem.
Time Machine locates extenal HDD backups differently depending if they were done via a network or via a USB/FireWire/Thunderbolt connection.
My initial backup was done via a direct Thunderbolt connection. I ran into the above issue b/c the second time when I tried looking for the backup file the HDD was conencted to my iMac and I was accessing it via a network conenction.
I simply connected the drive directly to my MacBook pro and ... voila. I was able to see the backup, select the iPhoto library and begin the restore.
    Hope this helps.
BTW - I found this out by reading the 'blue box' selection on this page: http://pondini.org/TM/E2.html
    (Thanks goes to Pondini!)

  • How can I delete repeats in my iPhoto library without going one at a time?

I have been trying to clean up my iphoto library, and find that many of my imports have been repeated in different places. Is there a way to clean out repeat photos so there aren't so many of the same ones without having to do so one at a time?

You can use any one of these applications to identify and remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR.
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
PhotoDedupo  - $4.99 (App Store) - this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find dupicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: i photo has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but the only diplicate finder app that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates was PhotoSweeper.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have diffferent file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.

  • How Can I Display the Name of iPhoto Library?

I manage a huge number of images so I keeep them in their own iPhoto libraries. In order to change libraries, I have to rename the one I have just left and then restart iPhoto. I have looked for years but cannot find a way for iPhoto to display the name of the library it has open. I could remember the names of all my libraries if I was not forced to change them in order to leave them and go to another. Does iPhoto tell you the name of the library you have open?
    Thanks
    20"iMAc G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Hi John,
iPhoto 6 now shows the name of the library in the title bar of the iPhoto window. At least it did the other day for me.
You can have a unique name for each of your libraries and use the Option key to launch iPhoto and choose to open another library, then navigate to the library, highlight it and click open.
You can also use one of the iPhoto Library managers to switch between libraries.
    iPhoto Library Manager

this page will show you everything you can do with iPhoto Library Manager.

  • How can I use one external hard drive for both Time Machine and iPhoto Library?

I have been using a 1 TG LaCie external hard drive for Time Machine backups.  My (older) Mac has 160 GB and is almost full.  I would like to move my iPhoto Library to the external hard drive, but I've heard Time Machine doesn't share one space well.  Should I
    1.  create another partition (but will this erase what I've already saved) with Disk Utility?  *I am running Snow Leopard*
    2.  create another volume to use for iPhoto, and if so, should the two volumes be of equal size?
    3.  leave it with one partition and move the iPhoto Library to the same partition with Time Machine back ups?
I know I don't need the entire 1 TG for back up of 160 GBs.  Please advise the best path to take.  Thank you!

You are getting incorrect information from your ASP. If you look at drive specifications the heat generated is no different for high vs low capacity drives.
I have upgraded the internal drive in my iMac 2007 with a 3TB Hitachi drive without any heat issues or other problems.
Larger hard drives have higher density platters so to access any given amount data the drives travel a shorter distance. Higher capacity drives should therefore run cooler than lower density drives because the drive spends less time spinning to access data.

  • How can I export a project (a book) from one iPhoto library to another?

I have a photo book in an iPhoto library that was on a laptop.  I'd like to export it from that library and import it into my iPhoto library on my iMac.  Is there any way to do that?  Thanks!

    No
Books do not exist. They are just database entries. So you must move the entire database (the iPhoto library by default) to move a book. You can make a smaller database by duplicating the current one and deleting everything except the book and it's photos. You can make and save a PDF of a book

  • How do I use one iPhoto library on multiple computers?

I have a laptop and my wife has a laptop...how do we share one commone iPhoto library? How would that work with syncing our iPhones?
I'm thinking we should get a shared network drive at home...but then our photos would not be available when we're not home - right?

The only way to do what you want is to put the Library on a USB/Thunderbolt disk and plug it into each Mac as required.
I'm thinking we should get a shared network drive at home
You can't put iPhoto on an Network location.

  • How can I move an iPhoto library from from one Mac to another?

How do I take a 30 GB iPhoto library from my home iMac (OSX 10.6.8) to work and combine the data with my my iPhoto Library on my work MacMini?

Put the iPhoto library at work on an external hard drive, take it home and use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/ -  to merge it into your iPhoto library on the Mac Mini assuming they both are the same version

  • How do I best share an iPhoto library to several users on a Lion Server?

I am considering setting up a Lion Server to use for our family of five. The one thing I struggle to understand from searching for information here, and throughout the Internet is: Can I set up a Lion server to have shared libraries for iTunes and iPhoto, and what is the best way to set it up? I would also like to understand if such a shared setup would create any issues with reduced functionality and/or performance?
Today we share libraries across several accounts on one computer, and that works mostly fine, although with some restrictions (only one account can have iPhoto open at a time, which is not much of an issue if on same computer; iTunes can share music but not Apps, ...)

I followed Apple's support team's instruction to create iPhoto on the new external hard drive (My Passport) - and then drag and drop the existing iPhoto library onto it from the Master file.
Don't know who told you that but it would be difficult to be more wrong.
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
