anyone else had this or can anyone offer solutions, iv run out of warranty and support.

Both. My 20" iMac at work has the same problem. It is common on the ALU 20" iMacs and yes I would say it's defective. Apple may not agree though.

  • Imac screen went dark after power interruption any suggestions?

My son's imac screen went dark after a power interupption (someone turning the computer off by pulling cord out of electric socket) and I can't get it to go back on.  I've already tried depressing the "command, alt,p and r" keys to get a restart, and while it did restart, still no picture on the screen.  Occasionally you can see white staticy lines, but mostly it is just dark.   I've seen the suggestions to update software and back up data but that isn't possible as far as I can tell because I can't see anything on the screen - it is totally dark!  Any suggestions?  He is coming home from a trip today and hasn't had any access to computer for some time - he is going to freak

First try iMac SMC and PRAM reset, please do each of them 2x. If that does not work then try restarting in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. You did not mention the version of OS X running on the machine, if you are running Snow Leopard then install the Snow Leopard disc in the SuperDrive and restart, when you hear the start up tone hold down the Option key and start from the SL disc and run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions & Repair Disk.

  • In the midle of a song the screen gets dark, then suddenly appear the home screen of ipod and the song stops.

i have updated my ipod 4g to ios 5.0. everything went great, but something is not right cause sometimes in the midle of a song the screen gets dark, then suddenly appear the home screen of ipod and the song stops. help-me, what should i do?

It occurs with both ripped songs and ITMS songs, but not always the same songs. Just this morning, I had a song skip ahead, then put down the ipod for a few mintues, came back and that same song did not skip ahead at all. I've been on a stretch now of about 20 songs with no skipping whatsoever. Hmmmmmm....
I've used all the five "R"'s multiple times to no avail. It just seems so random, it frustrates me.
    Thanks for the help, King

  • Screen Getting Darker

I have a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo that i bought in November of 2009.  i've noticed in the last month or so that about have of the screen is a little bit darker.  there's more light on the right side of the screen than the left side.  Does someone have an answer to this?  thanks.

    JMVD,
Seems to me that you're quite the Apple expert. I had this problem with my eMac. Since, I am not American or English I hope I can make the problem chrystal clear.
I think I had the same problem with my screen. A few days ago I left my eMac running while not using it. After a while the screen became dark due to the "sleep modus setting" of course. This is not the first time this happens. Only this time after activating the eMac again my screen was so much darker. So of course I changed the screen setting (calibration) at the system preference menu. It improved the brightness of the screen but I noticed that it still was not normal. I said to myself: as long as I can work with it than it would be no problem. But then last night I forgot to shut down my eMac and again the screen got darker. This time I tried to change the setting again. Again the calibration process but I saw that I am using the maximum brightness and I got irritated by the quality of the color. And furthermore if the screen would get darker the next time I already used up the calibration / brightness possibities.
So I went looking for help at the apple site. And I found your discussion. And I just tried the command option o f advise of yours etc etc etc. After the automatic restart only the grey screen (background) with in the centre the apple logo appeared.
Your advice was very simple so I just went for it. I hope I did not erased the whole unit. Please tell me what I should do know. Also I saw the screen (grey back ground / apple logo) was kind of dark. But, I never look at the screen when I start up the eMac. Maybe I am imagining this.
I hope you can help me with this. Unfortunately, I do not have the apple care protection plan.
    Thanx.

  • Ibook g3 screen getting darker

Hi, my ibook g3 screen is getting darker and darker. Yesterday I was able to see my wallpaper on the background, but today it's almost completly gone! The HD seem to work fine, I don't think it's a logicboard problem (I had to deal with that about two years ago), and it open and close as usual. Do I have do replace my screen?
    Thanks for the ansmers

Have you tried resetting the PMU? The PMU (Power Management Unit) has control over the backlight function, so resetting it may help.
    <hr>
If not, sometimes the inverter cable causes a black screen (no backlight). If this is what is wrong, the display may work at odd angles. Try opening (and/or closing) the display a bit to see if that helps.
If that doesn't help, it sounds as if you may need to replace the inverter board. I'd be inclined to think this is the problem because your description seems to indicate a gradual loss of the backlight.

  • IMac screen is dark

The screen is dark on my 2006 iMac.  Is there a way to reset or do I need a new part?  Also, what cable do I need to connect it to a MacBook Pro to recover data?

    Hi mgtrumpet,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I recommend using the steps in this article to troubleshoot your iMac, starting with the "No video..." section:

If necessary, try using Target Disk Mode to recover the files on your iMac using the MacBook Pro. See these articles for more information:

  • Screen gets darker

I cant find anything like this on the forum but perhaps I just missed something. For months now every 2 or 3 weeks the bottom right, bottom centre or the whole screen gets a bit darker. Normally if its part of the screen it get better after an hour but after a while even that does not happen. In the end resetting the PRAM or PMU is the only way to go to sort it out. I calibrate my screen every few days but always check before doing so that the screen has not gone dark again. Now I think this all started when bluetooth did a vanishing act as well. The computer tells you the hardware does not exist any more! This all started after one of the many 10.3 updates. Might not be all related to each other but thought best to mention it. Any ideas? When I say the screen goes darker I mean it goes greyer. There is no colour tints.

Thank God other people have noticed this probelm as well! I too have been having this problem for about the last two month. Though, I noticed it after I purchased my iSight camera. I would certainly hope that this issue can be resolved quickly and does not become another "nano-issue."

  • HT201406 When I open a web page the screen gets dark and not responding

Screen ges dark and non- responding can't get out of it frozen

Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies And Data (Clear Cache on iOS 4) and also Clear History
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari via the taskbar and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

(continuation of old thread with same title, since that one was closed)
Steve A. - Any update on the repair? you were going to try several components. I find with my darkening screen, i can sometimes restore full brightness by "sleep" and wakeup.

  • Is your screen getting darker?

Is anyone else experiencing the screen on their MacBook Pro getting darker and darker? I can't brighten it up with the contrast button, and while it's not totally black - it's really dark and hard to see. I tried downloading this correction:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088
But when I try to open it, it says that this file isn't supported on my computer. FYI - I'm got a MacBook Pro, and am running OSX 10.6.8

Asking if anyone else has seen this isn't likely to get you anywhere.  If you find out someone else has seen it, you still haven't learned anything other than that someone else has had the same problem.  If you're wondering if it's a common problem, it is not.
As to the update mentioned by that link, that sounds like a different problem.  And if it won't install on your machine, that's because your MBP is not one of the affected machines.  Updates like those will only install on specific hardware.
From the sounds of things, it sounds like your backlight is failing.  I would take it to an Apple Store or call Apple Support ASAP.

  • Ipad screen getting dark fast

The screen on my iPad turned pink a couple of days ago and now it's getting dark fast.  I've tried everything I can find out here:
I check the brightness and it's all the way up.
    I reset it.
I plugged it into a computer.
I put my knee into it. Lots of people thought that was a miracle remedy.
I can't afford a new iPad.  Please help thanks.

Is it still under warranty? I'd back it up and make an appointment and take it to your local apple store. It sounds to me like the screen or backlight is dying.

  • Emac screen getting darker with time?

ive had my emac now for a little over a yea...about 14 months to be exact. in may i noticed that the screen was getting considerably darker to the point where i could hardly see anything. so i calibrated it to lighten it up. it worked and then got even brighter and kinda back to normal. well this weekend it got seriously dark again. i recalibrated it again and now its somewhat brighter but the picture is still way to dark and looks like garbage. im very frustrated as i thought that it may just get better with time again as it did in may. any suggestions from anyone would be great!!!

  • My iMac screen suddenly dark. Cursor works. Display gone? Processor ok?

Screen went dark gray almost black.  Cursor still present and moves as should with mouse.  Sound controls work, too.  Feels like display died? Processor still okay but unreachable?  Or is it the reverse?

Problem now fixed with SMC reset.  Is this a sign that hard drive or display is going?  Have 24-inch, Early 2009 iMac.

  • T43 LCD Screen gets dark

    Hello,
I have noticed that T43 LCD screen all of a sudden while laptop in operation, getting darker and darker and becomes SO obscure to read!
I have checked the LCD connector and seems fixed at its position...What else should I come up with?  According to the manual, first thing is to check the 'LCD connectors' and maybe the inverter card...However, this laptop is almost 10 years old and LCD panel never replaced so far..

    Hi Steffen
On my old Tecra notebook I have had similar issue. From time to time the display started to flicker. One day after standby mode the display was completely dark. I was able to se that there is some open window but there was no background light.
In my case the display was replaced. Now I have new display and I am very happy. Now there is much more brilliance and I can work better than before.
To honest I am not a technician but I presume very soon you can expect totally display malfunction.

  • 20" iMac screen washed out on bottom corners, Tech says normal?

Ok, I have been through all the monitor issues with the 20" iMac G5s... many posts about the ghosted line along the bottom.... anyway
My new Intel 20" iMac has a different issue that I don't know if it is normal or not? I use a small free app called PiXel Check http://homepage.mac.com/macguitar/FileSharing16.html
to check a screen for bad or stuck pixels. In the all Black screen I have these two ghosted triangles on both corners of the machine that fade upwards to the middle of the screen. Dead center on the bottom of the screen, about 4-5" wide is dead black, but as you go along to each corner it gets very lite. It looks like the edge of the screen is missing black paint or something and is allowing bleed from the tubes.
I don't know if it is possible to capture this to show, but I will see if it is possible and post it. I went in to the Apple store and asked them about it and they said that since these are not Pro machines you should not expect perfection and that this sounds pretty normal for iMacs.
I sure hate that response. Gee, sorry you didn't spend more money, then you would get a machine that is near perfect... crap.
Anyway, is anyone else having issues like this? At first it may seem like reflection from the keyborad or desktop, but if you turn off the lights or get it pitch black and set the screen to total black, it shows very easily.
Ok, end of long post so pleas post if you are seeing this or anything like this.
    thanks,
    Cory
    20" G5 iMac and 12" PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hello Cory,
A problem that is common to some LCD displays is backlight leakage. If pressure is put on the display, you can end up crushing some of the pixels. Sometimes the display doesn't flex back, leaving the user with dark spots or bright spots in some areas. This can also result from a manufacturing defect within the LCD.
Did you accidentally put too much pressure on the display, or is this truly a manufacturing defect we are looking at?
Calling AppleCare about this is definitely the right move, however.
Good Luck finding a solution to your problem.
