'07 Macs & Vista-64

Anyone else annoyed that Apple still hasn't put out any EFI driver updates for mid and late '07 Macs (in my case MacBook Pro) to be able to run Vista-64bit?
I just can't believe it. A simple little driver holds me (and thousands of others) off to run Vista-64bit via BootCamp or Vmware Fusion (the latter one i tried too, didn't work even though Fusion itself supports Vista-64bit).

Sorry. I meant to say GB not MB.
Anyways, I have a MBP. I have Vista 32 running on it. I have 3.2 GB of RAM. It says 4 GB after installing SP1 but you really can only access 3.2 GB. I used to have Vista 64 on my MBP and was able to access all 4 GB of RAM. This is where I get the .8 GB number between the two versions. For the current software I run on Windows, there is no noticeable performance difference. You are only going to see better performance if you run true 64 bit software and that can take advantage of the 4 GB of RAM. Also, 64 bit Vista really shines with 8 GB or RAM, not 4.
Of course down the road 64 bit will be really good to have but not at this moment.

  • Using MAC Keyboard with Vista

I am using a dual OS, Mac & Vista. The Mac USB keyboard works occasionally with Vista. It may work for a few minutes then stop completely. I loaded the Bootcamp drivers with Vista as instructed. Is there and updated driver that will allow me to use the Mac Keyboard with Vista? Vista has no answers.

Just to update anyone interested, I installed Vista and MCE separately without using BootCamp. Just like a regular PC. I did not know it was possible I found it by accidentally. After which I installed the drivers and am currently using the Mini as an HTPC. I don't have osx installed on it. everything works perfectly. no problems at all. I think BootCamp creates more problems.

  • New to Macs, huge setup, and questions if it will work

I have been wanting to do this very ambitious cross-platform home networking/home entertainment setup ever since bootcamp.
    Here goes:
-Macbook with Vista Home Premium/Ultimate (w/ media center)
-New Airport Extreme Base Station for wireless w/connected:
-External HD that I can access and exchange files between OSX and Vista/XP
-Printer that can be accessed by both OSX and V/XP
    -Vizio GV47LF HDTV w/1080p
-Xbox 360 Elite w/ wireless adapter
I want to be able to use Media Center in Vista on the Macbook to stream all of my multimedia to the 360 and onto the Vizio plasma tv, all over the Airport. I would like to store the multimedia on the external drive so that both OSX and V/XP can access it, as well as the Xbox 360 for "living room/theater" type of viewing. I am hoping that this is going to be possible but I do not know how compatible Vista is with bootcamp/macs or how compatible all of that will be with the Mac w/ Vista to the Airport to the 360 over wireless
    Thanks for the help
    Bad
      Windows XP Pro

Ok, I will say what I think but don't bet anything on it, because I dont have this setup let alone an xbox 360 I can't say for anything for sure but:
-Macbook with Vista Home Premium/Ultimate (w/ media center)
I've heard of vista working with it but I can't remember for sure if it was with bootcamp specifically or with parallels. I'm pretty sure it was bootcamp though. As for basic compatability with a mac vista works better on a mac then many pcs.
-New Airport Extreme Base Station for wireless w/connected:
This I can see to work with almost 100% certainty
-External HD that I can access and exchange files between OSX and Vista/XP
This I can also see to work very easily
-Printer that can be accessed by both OSX and V/XP
Printer sharing with all of them very likely
    -Vizio GV47LF HDTV w/1080p
I don't see a wireless card in this so unless you streaming to the xbox first then to here I dont know how that works. Unless this is direct connect to the computer or to apple tv.
-Xbox 360 Elite w/ wireless adapter
This part is sketchy at best but may be possible, it does have wireless card so possibly.
Anyway thats what I think but as I said can't say for sure. Hope its somewhat helpful.

  • User Name and Password to file share OSX and Vista

I have just bought a Laptop running VISTA for work. I want to share files between my i-mac and the lap top. I have managed to share from MAC > Vista but can not log onto the MAC from Vista.
I map the drive using \\192.168.2.2\kemery and am then prompted for a user name and password so enter my MAC short name and password (administrator). The log on fails and returns "unsucessful" with the user name filled in as
KeithEmery-PC\kemery. I have tried changing it to WORKGROUP\kemery but nothing seems to work.
Please help - this is the last task on an otherwise simple setup!

I left off the \\ that is before the 192.168.2.2 and it worked just fine for me. But I am using Vista Ultimate and this may or may not make a difference. Ultimate is suppose to have easier Networking set - up

  • Printing From iBook To Printer on Vista Desktop, Cant see shared printers

Printing From iBook To Printer on Windows Vista Desktop, Can't see shared printer on a Vista machine from a Mac, although Windows notebooks find it immediately.
I have previously always had success sharing printers on Windows XP machines with my iBooks. . However upon installing Vista RC1 on my desktop I find I can no longer find the printer in the Mac's printer setup utility. When I dual boot back to XP everything works fine, but on the same machine when I boot into Vista I am unble to see the printers. The Mac printer setup utility finds the Vista machine on the network, but the printers are never visible. Is their some secret or channge in Vista that prevents Mac's running , in my case,Tiger 10.4.8 from seeing a shared printer on a computer running Vista
On the Vista machine, if I boot into XP The printer is shared and Windows notebooks can print to it, but neither of my iBooks can see the Printers when Vista is running.
    ibook G4 1.33ghz 12, 1.42ghz 14 Mac OS X (10.4.8) 1gig ram,

That might have been the situation for the beta's and first RC's, but I have a final build. Plus the fact that other Windoze notebooks see the printer on the Vista box just fine leads one to believe it is a mac/Vista specific issue.
If anyone actually has experience with a MAC and Vista , I would appreciate hearing from you.
    thanks,

  • How to migrate Library/DB from Windows to Mac

I am moving my photography business from windows to Mac (Vista convinced me). I already figured out how to get from adobe the Lightroom and CS3 licenses transferred, but I wonder how to deal with my pics? I have all my pics in a network hard drive and the library on my laptop with a backup on the network drive. My new configuration would be one iMac for doing all the work and one Mac Book for working on the road and sharing wit customers.
How to migrate my DB and photo collection?
How to set things up so I can use lightroom in both: My Macbook and the iMac? I ran a quick search and found many responses but I could not quite understand what needs to be done or confirm whether this scenario of two machines accessing same DB is supported for a NAS drive.
    Thanks!

Thanks Don, I am a writer and a photographer and probably not as savvy as you with technology or forums. I ran searches before posting my question, but nothing came back when using the keywords windows to mac, migrate DB, etc. So obviously I cannot even think about the right terms. Any link you can provide me with? So far after reading many posts around looks like LR will not work for my business because it does not support multiple PCs, but at least while I find another software solution, I want to be able to use my Macs with lightroom :-)

  • IMac and Vista

I have iTunes running on an iMac and a Windows Vista machine. All my songs are stored on the iMac. I have a home network using Airport Express. I want to know how can I access my music from my Vista PC. I thought I set it up correctly, and the Vista machine can see the songs on the iMac, but when I try to play a song, I get the account and password box that I get when I purchase a song. I enter the information and it tells me the computer has been authroized, but the song still does not play, and the account and password box keeps appearing. Help.

I'm not sure this will help, but it's worth a try. Vista has a lot of built in security (as I'm sure you've discovered)! Make sure you've given iTunes "full permission" in all categories. I had tremendous problems with sharing a library between my XP and my Vista machine until I relaxed all security settings on the Vista machine.
One thing you can check is the present iTunes security setting level for your Vista machine. To do this, go to the Start button>All programs>iTunes. Then right click on iTunes and choose Preferences. When this box opens, choose the security tab and then make sure EVERYTHING is permitted. If you need to alter settings, click on the advanced button.
On Edit: I also had to do the following to get my Vista computer to share properly with my XP computer:
I changed a setting in "My Network and Sharing Center". On the taskbar in the lower right corner, click on your internet icon. Then select "Network and Sharing Center" at the bottom of the menu box that opens. Scroll down to "Sharing and Discovery" and make sure "File Sharing" is on and "Media Sharing" is on. Save and close. (I actually had to reboot to get the change to take effect.)
P.S.--I don't know how my windows XP to Vista advice translates to a Mac/Vista situation, so I apologize if this isn't relevant!
    I hope this helps somewhat!
P.S.S.--Some of the advice given above is quite drastic and truly defeats the whole purpose of Vista's better built-in security. I'm not trying to be a jerk--but my solution (which works on my system) is a much safer alternative!

  • Vista/AirPort using WEP

I have a new MacBook Pro with Vista loaded in Bootcamp. The problem is when I use WEP settings in AirPort Extreme the Vista network will not connect. Vista sees the AirPort but when I enter the WEP info it does not connect to the internet. The MAC side works fine with WEP and Vista works fine with cable to AirPort but not wireless. Vista works fine when WEP is turned off - any clue whats going on here?

One possible fix to, dont use WEP as WEP is a old form of security and not very secure, and Vista will work with WPA anyways so will the mac , vista came preloaded with updates to allow it to use it since theyre trying to phase it out as the WPA security is a standardized form so better cross platform compatible

It may not have been considered a "Major Release," But when the it's the only OS that the machines you are currently building will run, it's pretty freakin' major!
(I'm not sure if Apple's latest machines will still run 10.5, or not, but from following this thread, I'm guessing not?)
It is the standard at Apple... the latest build of the current OS is what goes on the new machines, and the Motherboards, Chipsets, & BIOS (not the right term for it with Mac, I know) are "hard written" to accept that OS as the absolute minimum, and nothing older (or lower as some call it).
So, since the latest machines are coming preloaded with Snow Leopard (10.6.2) that, and subsequent newer builds of OS 10.6 and up is all they can be loaded with.
This is nothing new. It's industry wide in both Mac and PC. Just try to put XP on a brand new Dell, HP, or Gateway PC. Without flashing the BIOS and taking a "more likely than not" chance of rendering most of your hardware undetectable, it just ain't gonna happen.
Conversely, just as Snow Leopard won't run on a PPC powered Mac, Vista and 7 may install, or appear to, on a single core, older PC, but the first time you install and try to open anything other than the OS itself, you're in for a world of problems.
People have tried to fight this for years. In 2005 Mac users went out of their minds when Apple dropped support for OS 9. A year later, it was Windows 98 users freaking out over their beloved OS being "sunsetted". I was skeptical of the move to Intel processors when I first heard about it, having become a full time Mac user, and being partial to AMD before that. But like Motorola PPC processors, AMDs run hot and heat is the enemy. The new machines run faster, cooler, and do more for less money.
It's a major pain for people who don't have the budget for a new Mac (or PC) and still have old software that is perfectly functional, but they are finding more and more incompatibility as they interact with other people and newer systems. Sooner or later though, technology wins and everyone has to either upgrade or drop out.  Fighting it is futile.  I will always remember the day last Summer when I stopped at a traffic light and next to me was an older, redneck looking fellow in a new brand spanking new Honda Accord. It may have even been a hybrid, I don't know, but duct taped on his dash was what had to be a thirty-five year-old 8-track player with a bunch of wires coming out of the back, also taped to the dash, and running to a pair of 6 x 9 speakers, which were just laying on the dash (no duct tape). I had to wonder why he bothered to buy the latest in automotive technology and yet he was stuck in a time warp for his stereo. Don't Hondas come with some pretty decent CD stereo units? And where can you find 8 track tapes anymore?

  • Strange message when trying to connect to another computer via SMB

    Hello,
I sucessfully set up a MAC/VISTA network and used it for the past days. I connected through CMD+K smb//:<my_ip>
But now I get everytime the following message when doing that:
_*"Connection failed" - This data server is already active on your computer. Please access the files and volumes locally.*_
(This is my translation of the german message, so it might not be the correct translation)
Anyway, I can't find the share in Finder, it is not there anymore. What does this message means, I'm confused??

    open up your terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app)
    Type in the following:
    cd /Volumes <enter>
    ls -al <enter>
Now see if the name of your Vista PC is in the list. If it is, unmount them (there may be multiple instances)
    umount <Name of Volume> <enter>
You may have to use the "force" flag, like so:
    umount -f <Name of Volume> <enter>
You'll have to be root to do that.

  • Is it safe to force eject a Time Machine disk that is being encrypted?

The Time Machine encryption process is taking over 8 hours, is it okay to force eject it (using Finder's force eject command, not by unplugging the cable) so I can finish the encryption later?

From what many experts say, u should not encrypt TM. I agree, and I am nobody. But think about it. U are entrusting your backup to a new encryption scheme in a .0 release of what people are calling Mac Vista. A safer way to do this would be to put the enclosure in a tamperproof lock box where only you and your trusted other have the key, and if someone tries to take your data the entire enclosure bursts into flames ala Get Smart. That's what I would do, if I were bothered.
Ps. Pulling plugs on harddrives when they are writing is never a good idea. A better way to destroy the drive is to press the big red self destruct button on the before mentioned enclosure.

  • WRT160N, Laptop with XP, Can't Find Certificate

My laptop (Panasonic Business Toughbook with XP) can no longer connect to the WRT160N.  Other computers in the house work fine on the wireless network, so I would not want to reset all of them if I reset the router.  As far as I recall, security is WEP, because that's the only one that accepts the long password that was generated on initial setup.  Part of the reset-them-all issue is that they all run different OS (Mac, Vista, Linux) so everything looks different to me when setting up the connections.
The laptop has both Windows to run the wireless and Intel PROSet.  Windows tells me it can't find a Certificate.  Intel tells me "Didn't receive IP Address".   Everything worked OK until yesterday morning.  I did have the batter run down on the laptop.  Wired connection works fine.
Is there a way to simply "fix" the one laptop that doesn't work?

Try to add the wireless network manually on your XP computer.
Open Network connections. Right click on Wireless network connection and go to Properties. Click on Wireless Networks tab. If you see your wireless network under preferred networks list then remove it.
Click on Add button.  Type the SSID ( wireless network name ). Uncheck the box ' The key is provided to me...'. You will find the box to enter the network key. Enter the network key and confirm it. Click ok.
Try to connect to the wireless network and see if that works.

  • Computer Crashes after 1.1.1 update??

Has anyones computer crashed after update???
    heres wat happen to me!
First i got errors -48. Called Apple had to create new user account to on my computer to work around it. then logged back in to my user account and got error -50 that said unable to sync!
I go to restart my computer hoping that would fix it. It wont restart!!! I push the power button and it makes the little sound and u hear the disc drive then the screen turns gray and stays gray and doesnt do anything else!!!
    Whats going on!!!

Well the first thing I thought of was device driver problems, and there is a lot of that being reported here, although I've never seen it reported on a MAC system. I would still say though that it has something to do with your system setup, exactly what unknown, you'd have to troubleshoot that yourself, sorry, but it could be lots of things and you would know your system better than anyone else. I can tell you one thing though, I use my iPhone on my MAC, Vista 32b, and XP PRO with no problems at all. So it's got to be something inherent in your system. USB ports can be flakey on MAC's as well as windows systems, so the first thing I would do is unplug all existing USB devices, accept keyboard/mouse, and try to proceed from there.
I would also try to ignore the idiots that only want to post things like OOOooopppsss.
