0x0000007a Error for VMS inside a Hyper-V server in a failover cluster

Hi All,
This is my first time posting a question on this forum. Will provide more details if necessary.
Would appreciate any help for the below problem:
We have two servers operating on Win 2012 R2 datacenter. However one of them(host2) had all it's VMs crash with error code 0x0000007a. While the OS of the host itself was ok in a sense, trying to run any application or opening windows explorer would result
in a hang, We can still use ctrl+alt+delete to log off.
Both servers have been installed with similar windows update patches, and all the configurations are the same. However Host01 is running fine.
Booting on safe mode let's us run the server fine. Did a chkdsk /r and it found some errors on the disk, I did a restart to let it try and fix the issue but issues are still the same.
Dell hardware check came up with nothing.
Thank you!
Anton

Hi
Can you check if there are any hardware errors logged in event viewer?
Perhaps you have a faulty memory module. I had a similar issue with my host and it ended up being a combination of reseating the ram and replacing the Quad network adapter.
Are both you dells on the latest SUU?
Hope this helps. Please remember to click “Mark as Answer” on the post that helps you, and to click “Unmark as Answer” if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

A system assertion check has failed. Check the SQL Server error log for details. Typically, an assertion failure is caused by a software bug or data corruption. To check for database corruption, consider running DBCC CHECKDB. If you agreed to send dumps to
Microsoft during setup, a mini dump will be sent to Microsoft. An update might be available from Microsoft in the latest Service Pack or in a QFE from Technical Support.
    Error: 3624, Severity: 20, State: 1.
SQL Server Assertion: File: <logscan.cpp>, line=2123 Failed Assertion = 'UtilDbccIsInsideDbcc () || (m_ProxyLogMgr->GetPru ()->GetStartupState () < RecoveryUnit::Recovered)'. This error may be timing-related. If the error persists after rerunning
the statement, use DBCC CHECKDB to check the database for structural integrity, or restart the server to ensure in-memory data structures are not corrupted.
    Error: 17066, Severity: 16, State: 1.
External dump process return code 0x20000001.
External dump process returned no errors.
    Thank you in advance.

You need to determine if this error is a transient one or a show stopper one.
It sounds like your log reader agent has crashed and can't continue.
If so your best bet is to call Microsoft CSS and open a support incident.
It also sounds like DBCC CHECKDB was running while the log reader agent crashed.
If you need to get up and running again run sp_replrestart, but then you might find that replicated commands are not picked up. You will need to run a validation to determine if you need to reinitialize the entire publication or a single article.
I have run into errors like this, but they tend to be transient, ie the log reader agent crashes, and on restart it works fine.

  • MS- WIN SERVER 2008-R2 FAILOVER CLUSTER --ERROR 1127 ,1583

    DEARS ,
I HAVE BEEN FACING PROBLEM FOR MY WINDOWS FAIL OVER CLUSTER SCENARIO.
THE ERROR CODES ARE 1127 AND 1583 WHICH ARE STATING THAT
All nodes IPv4 networks should be configured properly.
Nodes which are using Automatic Private IP Address (APIPA) for adapter Cluster.will not be added to the Windows Failover Cluster. If the adapter is to be used by Windows Failover Cluster, the IPv4 properties of the adapter should be changed to allow assignment
of a valid IP address that is not in the APIPA range.
However , I have checked that all of my NIC adapters have valid Static IP addresses. Also , when one of the nodes is down ,it cannot look for another node.
    Please advise for the solution.

    Hi,
Could you clarify your described “Nodes which are using Automatic Private IP Address (APIPA) for adapter Cluster.will not be added to the Windows Failover Cluster.” Did you
found one of your cluster node “automatically” have the APIPA address? If so, it seems is the IP conflict issue.
If it is not the IP address conflict issue, please try to disable your all the nodes firewall
or AV soft have the event 1583 typically cause by this function incorrect configured.

  • Server 2008 R2 failover cluster for DFS servers

A new client currently has a couple Server 2008 R2 failover clusters (one at each of their two primary sites) as their two hub DFS locations. I'm confused, and can't see much of a reason for this implementation, which only seems to introduce added complexity
with no real benefits. Here are my reasons:
    - At each site, the servers in the failover clusters are on the same server VM farms, hosted on the same SAN's.
    - The data hosted on each node of the clusters are not identical. For example, server1 has 25 DFS replicated folders and server2 has 20 replicated folders. In fact, the ~25 folders on server1 are all named <site>-user, and the ~20 folders on server
2 are <site>-data. There appears to be no crossover.
So if the SAN fails, they're screwed. If the VM host fails, they're screwed. Why not just have two DFS servers at each site for redundancy within each site, and replicating with other site DFS servers as needed? I'm not super strong with failover clustering
at all though, so I may easily be missing something.

    Hi Steve,
From the description, as you said it seems create more factors which may cause a failure.
Using DFS on cluster could eliminate the possible of a single failing VM. However if the VM host is down, which will still leads to a failure. So actually the risk is still them same as just creating DFS namespace on these 2 VM hosts or any other file server.

  • Dedicated network for AlwaysON replication traffic when a replica is a Failover Cluster Instance

    Hi,
We are planning to setup dedicated network for our Availability Group replication traffic. We have a Failover Cluster Instance as the primary replica and a standalone SQL server instance as the secondary.
I understand that we will need to manually configure the database mirroring endpoints on both the replicas to listen on the specific IP.
But how do I configure the database mirroring endpoint on the Failover Cluster Instance ?
    Please help.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Jisha

If you have a dedicated network for your Availability Group replication traffic between the FCI and the standalone instance, you need to identify if there will be other network services included in the mix. For example, your public network is already using
it's own DNS server by virtue of Active Directory integration. Your dedicated network for replication traffic may or may not have its own DNS server so configuring the endpoints would involve using either IP addresses like the one highlighted in the
blog post or using hosts file with fully qualified domain names so you can use them when creating the endpoints

  • ODBC errors for Oracle Migration Workbench and SQL Server 2000 on Windows

    Hi all-
I setup a new ODBC connection for the Oracle 10g Migration Workbench to MS SQL Server 2000 on Windows XP and keep getting the following errors when I try to
either test the new ODBC connection to MS SQL Server 2000 for use with the Oracle Migration Workbench tool. Goal is to fix these errors so that I can migrate our test SQL Server 2000 databases to Oracle 10g.
    Current configuration
    - Oracle 10.1 Migration Workbench
    - Oracle 10g Database (target)
    - MS SQL Server 2000 (source database)
    -Windows XP
-ODBC 3.85.1117 driver for Windows XP with SQL Server and Oracle
    Errors:
    I. When I test the ODBC connection:
Microsoft SQL Server ODBC Driver Version 03.85.1117
    Running connectivity tests...
    Attempting connection
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]Specified SQL server not found.
    TESTS FAILED!
Now here is what has me totally confused:
I can use the command line ISQL to access the database on the server and IP is all correct and port is available. So I can access the SQL Server database fine it is when I try to setup ODBC that it gives me problems.
Any tips how to get this ODBC working?
    Thanks
    Ben Prusinski

    1. Jing Jin. If you had READ the post you would have seen that installing later versions is NOT an option.
    2. Not supported does NOT mean does NOT work, as Balmukund pointed out in the referenced thread.  The site that this databases supports is using ASP which is also NOT supported by Microsoft.  As it turns out Balmukund's solution actually turns
out to be the correct solution.  I installed SS2K and its Service pack 4 on the machine last night.  Good answer Balmukund. as we say in the Navy, "BRAVO ZULU!!"  which means "WELL DONE!!
    3. Tom Li I just posted the question less than 48 hours ago.  My last post was less than 24 hours ago.  I think I have the right to be given the opportunity to determine whether a reply is the answer or not. I understand you don't like unanswered
posts sitting around for weeks, months or years. (I don't like it either as I have a few that are still unanswered after several years.)  But you should not be showing replies as answers before I even get a chance to see them, much less try them out.
You should also not be showing replies as answers which don't address the criteria of the question.  I specifically stated that I had to install SS2K.  I went on to state, "And before anyone asks I need to install this version because that is what
the customer is using and I need to duplicate their databases."  So the correct answer, if in fact SS2K did not work on Windows 7, would have been a virtual machine answer, as suggested on the thread Balmukund referenced.  So before you mark a reply
as an answer read the question.

  • Guest VM failover cluster on Hyper-V 2012 Cluster does not work across hosts

    Hi all,
We are evaluating Hyper-V on Windows Server 2012, and I have bumped in to this problem:
I have a Exchange 2010SP2 DAG installed on 2 vms in our Hyper-V cluster (a DAG forms a failover cluster, but does not use any shared storage). As long as my vms are on the same host, all is good. However, if I live migrate or shutdown-->move-->start one
of the guest nodes on another pysical host, it loses connectivity with the cluster. "regular" network is fine across hosts, and I can ping/browse one guest node from the other. I have tried looking for guidance for Exchange on Hyper-V clusters but have not
    been able to find anything.
According to the Exchange documentation this configuration is supported, so I guess I'm asking for any tips and pointers on where to troubleshoot this.
    regards,
    Trond

    Hi All,
    so some updates...
We have a ticket logged with Microsoft, more of a check box exercise to reassure the business we're doing the needful.  Anyway, they had us....
Apply hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2789968?wa=wsignin1.0  to both guest DAG nodes, which seems pretty random, but they wanted to update the TCP/IP stack...
There was no change in error, move guest to another Hyper-V node, and the failover cluster, well, fails with the following event ids I the node that fails...
1564 -File share witness resource 'xxxx)' failed to arbitrate for the file share 'xxx'. Please ensure that file share '\xxx' exists and is accessible by the cluster..
1069 - Cluster resource 'File Share Witness (xxxxx)' in clustered service or application 'Cluster Group' failed
1573 - Node xxxx  failed to form a cluster. This was because the witness was not accessible. Please ensure that the witness resource is online and available
The other node stays up, and the Exchange DB's mounted on that node stay up, the ones mounted on the way that fails failover to the remaining node...
    So we then
Removed 3 x Nic's in one of the 4 x NIC teams, so, leaving a single NIC in the team (no change)
Removed one NIC from the LACP group on each Hyper-V host
Created new Virtual Switch using this simple trunk port NIC on each Hyper-V host
Moved the DAG nodes to this vSwitch
Failover cluster works as expected, guest VM's running on separate Hyper-V hosts, when on this vswitch with single NIC
So Microsoft were keen to close the call, as there scope was, I kid you not, to "consider this issue
resolved once we are able to find the cause of the above mentioned issue", which we have now done, as in, teaming is the cause... argh.
But after talking, they are now escalating internally.
The other thing we are doing, is building Server 2010 Guests, and installing Exchange 2010 SP3, to get a Exchange 2010 DAG running on Server 2010 and see if this has the same issue, as people indicate that this is perhaps not got the same problem.
    Cheers
    Ben

  • DPM 2012 R2 Consistency Check (Replica Inconsistent) Error for Failover Cluster

I have a SCDPM 2012 R2 instance running against a Windows Server 2012 R2 Failover Cluster on the network.
However, any new/migrated Roles/Virtual machines that I add under an existing protection group always gives me an error saying that the replica is inconsistent.
    I've verified the following :
    1. All windows updates are applied on the cluster hosts & the DPM server.
    2. The VSS and DPMRA services are running on the hosts & DPM server.
    3. The Windows Server Backup feature has been installed on all the machines as well.
    4. The short term storage disks attached to the DPM server are LUNs and there is enough free space on those.
What else am I missing that could be causing the Replica to be inconsistent - considering that these are new VMs on the hosts themselves - is there a way to force a fresh replica to be created?

Do not remove any of the providers they come with the system. There is just something wrong with that VM, your trying to backup, as it could take the initial replica creation.
    Check all of the following
    1) Make sure you have enough C drive space on the guest - need space to create a snapshot
    2) Check the vssadmin list wirters for any errors
If none of the above, rerun the consistency check when no other backup is running. Check the Application log on the host for any vss failures
Ensure you have all the DPM hotfixes - I am compiling a list since i've been thru many DPM issues.
Great product when you get it going but like any product there are bumps in the road :)

  • Why Win2k8 R2 VM on Hyper-V Server 2012 behaves erratically?

    Hello,
I realized this strange problem with Windows 2008 R2 VMs running on Hyper-V Server 2012. My Hyper-V Server 2012 host has been running mix of VMs just fine. I've a Linux VM running, a couple of Windows 2012 R2 VMs, a Windows 8.
I created three new VMs, gave them decent hardware. 4 GB of RAM each. A fixed VHDX file of 40 GB. I left processor allocation to Hyper-V. Windows 2008 R2 ISO was mounted to all three. Installation started. The VMs were plugged into an external network to
access internet for Windows activation and software updates.
Installation went smooth. I could log on and kick off windows updates installation. it took a reboot but when it came back, strange things started happening.
First, after VM won't respond to CTRL+ALT+DEL command from the VM console; saying 'VM doesn't did not respond to command'. I inserted integration start up disk from Media Menu on VM's console window. It allowed me to log on this time. I continued
to download/install windows updates to update and complete that. All important updates were selected (even in first step above) and none of optional update was selected.
This round of updates download/install updates finished and VM rebooted. Again, when it became available it stopped responding to any of commands sent to VM, Reset, Stop,Shut down, Turn off and won't allow CTRL+ALT+DEL. Strangely this time it didn't
like accepting mounting integration services start up disk. The message displayed; when any of these actions were performed, is "RPC service not available".
What could go wrong with Windows 2008 R2 VM created just now behaving like this?
Did someone experience issues like this with just built Windows 2008 R2 VMs? Please share and advise.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Shahzad.

    Hi Adam,
Indeed it is odd. The flow has been following, and I doubt any of these steps had caused any issue.
Step 1. VM started, booted from ISO, installed OS, Reboot. (usual)
Step 2. VM became available, password configured, logged on, checked DHCP assigned TCP/IP Settings.
Step 3. WUAPP invoked to download install updates, updates required reboot, VM rebooted.
Step 4. VM became available, won't respond to CTRL+ALT+DEL  (In hyper-V VM console DEL is replaced by End).
Step 5. Integration startup disk inserted, waited couple of seconds, VM allowed CTRL+ALT+DEL.
Step 6. WUAPP invoked again to continue download/install of updates, it finished, VM rebooted.
Step 7. VM became available, won't respond to any command sent to VM from console, just complains (RCP Service not available). Won't accept integration startup disk even.
BTW, the ISO used is trial edition of Win2k8 R2; popularly available for download, the
    180 days trial edition.
I couldn't get to stage to assign IP to VM, because I wanted to install all important updtes before I do any thing else.
    Regards,
    Shahzad.

  • Failover Cluster Validation Report Error with IBM USB Remote NDIS Network device

We are setting up Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 Failover Cluster on IBM X3850 X5 and get errors in the Failover cluster Validation Report due to the IBM USB Remote NDIS Network Device is using APIPA adresses and both servers are using same APIPA-adresse.
How should I configure the Server and OS for the Failover cluster to be MS approved?
IBM don't recommend that i disable the Network device, but it is a possible solution!?!

What I did was use ipconfig /all to see the settings it is using and then when and set the ip setting on the NDIS driver to be that except I increment the last value by 1 for each node so that they do not have the same IP address.   I ran the
cluster validation again and it came up clean and I have not experienced any issues yet.  It does give warnings about it being an Automatic Private IP Address and should not be used, which is ok because we are not going to use it anyways.

  • Can a SQL Server Failover Cluster Instance (FCI) be Implemented Between Two Hyper-V Hosted Virtual Machines?

I haven't had the opportunity to implement a SQL Server Failover Cluster Instance (FCI) for over 10 years and that was done with two physical, identical database servers way back in the day of Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2000 (old school).
Can a SQL Server 2008 R2 Failover Cluster Instance (FCI) be implemented between two Hyper-V hosted virtual machines? The environment in question already has Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V hosts in place, so I'm just looking to see if this is even
possible and/or supported when utilizing virtual machines.
The client in question is currently using SQL Server 2008 R2 instances running on Win2008R2, Win2012, and Win2012R2, but I'd also be interested how this can be done or not with SQL Server 2012 or 2014 as well. Thanks in advance.
    Bill Thacker

Yes, it can be done with Hyper-V guests. In fact, with Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V, guests can use the Shared VHDX feature for shared storage used by Windows clusters. The guests can run Windows Server 2008 and higher provided that the Hyper-V Integration
Services are installed to support Shared VHDX. The only challenge here is making the Hyper-V hosts highly available as well, running it on WSFC.

  • Two VMs inside Hyper-V Under 2012 Essentials R2? Need 2003 To Run as Well for CRM and SQL Server

We are a small office (8 users) with a new server on the way.  We are running Server 2003 and CRM 4.0 and will upgrade to Server 2012 Essentials R2.  I would like to run this as a VM and integrate Azure's cloud backup.  The problem --and I'd
like to be wrong about this -- is there is no included SQL server with Essentials 2012.  Our old server has SQL server 2005 which I believe was included.  Our database is only 1.6GB so we could use the free version of SQL Server 2014, but it is limited
to one CPU.  Our new server is dual CPU, 8 total cores.  My thought is to use P2V and make a virtual machine from my current 2003 server, then run that inside the Hyper-V environment along with 2012 Essentials.
So I have two questions?  Does the Essentials (or Hyper-V) licensing permit me to run any more VMs than the single instance of 2012 Essentials?  And secondly, will the primary 2012 Essentials installation acting as the Hyper-V administrator be
able to use Azure to back up both virtual machines?
If I am acting on any incorrect assumptions please correct me.

I suggest that you follow your own suggestion on what to believe from posts.  Read the EULA on Essentials on your own.  And talk to a trained Microsoft licensing specialist.  Some of your assumptions are not valid.
"I have purchased Server Essentials 2012 R2, which allows for one instance to implement the hypervisor and one instance of a virtual machine."
From the data sheet describing Server Essentials is this statement - "
With Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials, the product licensing terms have been expanded to enable you to run one operating system instance on the physical server in order to run Hyper-V, plus a second instance on that server in order to run Essentials as
    a virtual machine.
Therefore, the only VM you can legally run under Essentials is another copy of Essentials.
"Furthermore it would be foolish for Microsoft to deny me additional virtual machines under that scenario since I can install Hyper-V Server 2012 R2 for free and use Essentials to manage it."
FALSE.  Actually, virtualization rights are part of the Server operating system license.  Since the license is written by Microsoft, they can include whatever limits they deem appropriate.  In fact, when looking at Standard and Datacenter
Editions of Windows Server, the ONLY difference between the two are the virtualization rights included with the operating system.  Your assumption that you can run it for 'free' under Hyper-V Server is incorrect.  True, Hyper-V server is
a no-cost download from Microsoft, but it does not include any operating system licenses.  Those must be purchased separately.  Licenses are assigned to physical machines, not to virtual machines.  So it would be possible to use your 2003 license
on a Hyper-V Server instance, but only if it is a non-OEM license.  OEM licenses are non-transferrable from the hardware with which they were sold.
"It would also be foolish because I could virtualize everything under VMWare's ESXi --for free--"
FALSE.  Same reason as given above.
Lastly, be forewarned about P2V of a Windows Server 2003 machine.  If you spend any time reading this forum, you will find lots of horror stories about people having less than successful attempts at P2V'ing WS2003.  The recommendation is to build
a 2003 VM from scratch to avoid the many pitfalls, assuming you do not have an OEM license.  Of course, even then you are still putting a business critical system on an operating system that is dropping support come July of next year, followed shortly
thereafter by no support on SQL 2005.  Bottom line is that you would most likely be better served by trying to upgrade your application to a version that runs on the current release of Windows Server.

  • Advice on setting up a windows server 2012 domain LAB for study within Hyper V server 2012 r2 machine

HI im wanting to setup a study lab containing several windows 2012 r2 servers (mixture of core and full installs) to allow me to study towards my MCSA in server 2012 r2 and then for MCSE.
    Physical equpiment,
1 pc   which is has window 8.1 pro installed from this machine.  This machine i would like  to remote manage and connect through to my Hyper-v server and then into any of the virtual machines. (this machine is more of a gaming pc so not
able to run to many vm's from it)
2 pc bought Just for study  8 core processor 1 tb of hhd space 16 gb of ram.
This machine i would like to setup using hyper-v server 2012 r2,  which then i would create a test domain within it also with some clients allowing me to play and undstand the principles im learning.
now im getting conflictiong information regarding the Hyper-v server 2012.
If i set the hyper-v server up as a standalone in a work group.  Would i be able to manage ther VM's within the hyperv server from my external windows 8 pro machine using the remote server management tools or would i need to connect that pc
    to the domain.
Things I think i can do but not sure.   as im still learning
Could I setup a server 2012 r2 running AD dns and add the hyper-v role then wihtin that create the rest of the domain inside, allowing me from my other phyical machine log on to domain and manage all servers and machines.
Could I set up as i originally suggested, set up hyper-v 2012 server in a workgroup,  then create the domain within the hyper-v server but still connect from my external pc to manage the hyper-v and all the internal VM's within the domain.
I could run a Domain controller on a VM from my other windows 8 machine (within hyper-v or wmware), then on the 2nd machine install the hyper-v server connect it to the domain running from the other machine from what i can see, many people say this is the
better option, BEST Practice, but this is only a lab and i dont require resilience.  and i would prefer to have my  as a sever manager via the remote tools.
So what i like to know if you can point me in the right direction either by a guide for someone who has setup a similar to me.
or tell which of the above options is possible or not so i dont waste anytime.
Network, i know i can do this virtually but i already have cisco routers and layer 2 swicthes so i may make the network lab via them.
Thanks in advance  for any help you can give me

It makes it easier to set up if everything is in the same domain, but it is quite possible to manage the VMs without being part of the domain.  A very useful tool that I use for my lab all the time (my lab is in a lab domain and my laptop is in the
corporate domain with absolutely no trusts between them) is RDCMAN.
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=21101  I all my machines, physical and virtual, defined within RDCMAN and can easily connect to any one of them from my laptop.  But to understand how to manage everything remotely, I create
one virtual workstation within the domain and load all the management tools on it.  I RDP to the management workstation and perform most management functions, but I can get to any machine directly if I need to.

Yes, but you could also build the AD as a VM, too.

Greetings everyone. My problem is very basic: I have an OMF (~ 1,5 Gb, ~6200 files) exported from PT 9. While I try to open it, Audition eats ~3,7GB of RAM and freezes. I have a PC with Win 7 64 bit & 8 GB RAM. So, isn't there a way to tune something
