1.0/1.1 GHz G3 Powerlogix CPU Upgrades in Beige G3

There have been very few postings of upgrades to the Powerlogix 1.0 and 1.1 GHz G3 CPU upgrades over at xlr8yourmac. Any of the upgraders here have any experience w/ this CPU upgrade in a Beige G3? Comments positive or negative? Problems?
I'm currently running a 466 MHz CPU in a Beige MT and am looking for a little more quickness. I've already maxed out the RAM and am running a ATA-133 Maxtor HDD on a ATA-133 SIIG PCI card.

Thanks for your comments. There are very few xlr8yourmac postings for the newer Powerlogix G3 upgrades in a Beige G3, but several for the B&W G3s. Likewise, xlr8yourmac's own CPU upgrade comparison using the new Powerlogix G3 upgrade was done w/ a B&W. The problem is that the B&W's were so different from the Beige, so quirky, and in fact so different from the front to the back of their production cycle that I wouldn't rely on their results as typical for the G3 upgrades. That said, most of the B&W upgrades w/ the Powerlogix 1/1.1 GHz IBM chip were favorable.
I ruled out the G4 upgrades for my Beige based on the long string of horror stories of those early adopters of G4 upgrades for their Beige G3s. They may have solved those problems, but I decided some time back, based on various web discussion threads, that G4s and the Beige just don't live and play well together.
It is true that the 66 MHz buss is starting to be a noticeable choke point. But, for the most part, speeding up what you can speed up, compensates for that problem. No, it can't make it into a new machine, but a used Mac at 933 MHz on ebay is going for almost $1K, and I can approach that performance for a lot less additional investment.

  • Powerlogix CPU Director..Is it required??

I just recieved and installed my OWC Powerlogix Dual 1.5G cpu upgrade card this evening.
Install was very smooth and the system seems to be running just fine.
Currently encoding a dvd to psp format t osee how much time I shaved off by the upgrade.
My question is though, is the CPU Director software a requirement?
It seems from the readme that comes with it, CPU Director will not do anything for my dual 1.5G.
It allows to you be able to change the speed of your cache.
It offers DFS. However, it mentions it will not work for cpu was a multiplier that is not an integer. The 1.5 falls into this category.
I also think it will provide some temp monitoring.
    So to me nothing important.
Anybody else using CPU director for their Powerlogix uprgade? Is there something I am missing here?

    Hi Grinch-
CPU Director does as you state, as well as offer temperature monitoring.
It is not a requirement to use, and not using it will not cause any adverse performance in the processor upgrade.

  • CPU upgrade on Satellite L30-101

Hi, I have a Toshiba Satellite L30-101. I've upgraded the RAM successfully to 2GB (2x 1GB) but I'm finding it incredibly hard to get information on processor replacements.
The laptop has the latest BIOS on it (3.10-WIN - 19/02/08) but when trying to find information regarding whats in it I'm hitting brick walls. Firstly the site > http://www.toshiba-tro.de/biosinfo/ < doesn't have my laptop on it,
    Product Type: Notebook
    Family: Satellite
    Product Series: Satellite L Series
    Model: ? unknown
    Short Model No: ? unknown
I did hope I could stick an Intel Duo in but with the ATI chipset, I'm pretty sure it wont work but again without knowing whats within BIOS, compatible.. I'm lost. The only processor I can find which may work, same package, FSB, socket is an Intel Core Solo Processor T1350 which kicks out 1.86 GHz, not a massive difference and I'm sure it can't be the only replacement option.
Could someone and staff please help me with getting hold of BIOS info and compatible processors for my laptop. The current Intel Celeron M Processor 410 kicking out 1.46 GHz isn't good enough for Vista (cert on laptop) and basic multi tasking. Its lagging way too much even after a good tune up, ram upgrade, HD upgrade to 7200RPM. I'm in need of a processor upgrade but as mention finding it incredibly hard to obtain information of which would be compatible.
    Sincerely,
    Gourcuff

    Hello
In my opinion your attempt to replace CPU is wrong. Why? Satellite L30 is not designed to offer some fabulous performance and it is designed for everyday usage. Best evidence for this was the price. It was not so expensive.
Can you please tell us why do you want to have new CPU? Do you use some special software?
Back to CPU replacement. As you probably know mobile computers have limited upgrade options and it is related to RAM and HDD upgrade. It is definitely unprovided for CPU upgrade and it is not supported. Specific design, especially cooling system is designed for certain CPU.
Due to all this you will not be able to find any relevant info about CPU replacement.
Check please this Toshiba document - http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/TSB9401AX0001R01.htm

    Hey guys,
At the moment I have just the one 2.8 GHz (E5462) Harpertown.

  • Check this out : Daystar, Inc. for CPU upgrade! Reliable?

I recently bumped to a highly tempting news : it is now possible to upgrade my iMac FP 17" 800MHz to a faster 1.35GHz, along with larger internal HDD, RAM and Optical Drive. The only option not available is the Video Card (they say it's on-board by default and cannot be replaced).
A company named Daystar offers a low-cost CPU upgrade for the following iMacs (the right-hand GHz is the available upgrade specific to each model):
    15" 700MHz to 1.35GHz
    15" 800Mhz to 1.35GHz
    17" 800Mhz to 1.35GHz
    15" 1.0G to 1.92GHz
    17" 1.0G to 1.86GHz
    17" 1.25G to 1.92GHz
    20" 1.25G to 1.92GHz
They say the upgrade is available for as low as $449.00. For additional options additional cost would apply, but anyway. I wonder if anyone had heard this before?
Here's the link to Daystar, iMac FP upgrade section.
    http://daystar-store.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=732
I mean, this really sounds sweet but how reliable is this? I thought iMac was basically a non-upgradable system, except for its external RAM and Airport(Express) network card. Pretty impressive, though. Surely worth a glance for those of us considering serious upgrade (like me).

    Hi,
    FWIW....
Modifying some thing that was designed for a very specific purpose usually ( in my experience ) leads to problems further down the line. The excess heat may cause problems. Taking the thing apart and re-assembling may lead to others. Buying a newer, faster machine seems a far safer option - To me at least!

  • Powerbook G3 CPU Upgrade

I just read an article from a couple years ago that mentioned the Powerlogix G3-900 cpu upgrade for the Powerbook Pismo. Apparently this effectively doubled the power of the machine. Does anybody know where I might be able to find one of these? I know you can get G4's, but I'm assuming the G3 would be just as good or better for OS 9.
    Thanks,
    David

The difference of being able to get the G4 is support for the Altivec processor engine. This helps in compatibility with DVD encoding software, though you really need a minimum of a 733 Mhz G4. G3/900 CPU compatibility is something else you'd have to look for. Getting a processor upgrade is all fine and good, if you have something that will take advantage of it.

  • MSI GX70 to Richland CPU Upgrade

    Hi
My GX70 Notebook is now getting too slow for some of the finest newest Games, for example Dead Rising 3 runs with 9-12 Frames, Assassins Creed Black Flag 12 frames, Need for Speed Rivals 3-10 frames, and Sleeping Dogs is not playable (1-8 frames).
All other games till 2013 are fine, but these brandnew games are just a little bit too hardware hungry. And I guess the new Assassins Creed games which are released this fall, won`t run fine too and will stutter around with 9-13 frames.
This has nothing to do with the graphics settings, because no matter how high or how low I set the graphic options, the framerate does not change (from ultrahigh to low settings maybe +2 frames) so the problem is not a GPU issue.
The slow outdated AMD A10-5750, 4x2,4 GHz CPU completely bottlenecks the very fast and impressive Radeon 8970 graphics chip, and therefore I want a better CPU for up to date gaming performance.
So I`d like to know if it is possible to insert this great CPU into my Notebook, the AMD A10-6800k Richland (AD680KWOHLBOX) for socket FM2 and 100 watts power consumption, and 4x4,1 GHz.
    Impressive, huh? :D
Double the clock - double the fun, this should solve all the lagging problems and will make these extreme slow running games fully playable:
    http://www.heise.de/preisvergleich/amd-a10-6800k-ad680kwohlbox-a950987.html
Can I just buy this CPU and put it into my GX-70 Notebook?
Is the power supply strong enough for 100 watts CPU?
Will the CPU clock really be 4x 4,10 Gigahertz?
Will a BIOS update be necessary after inserting the new CPU? (I am really really afraid of flashing the BIOS, I bricked a Galaxy S3 mobile phone before, I really DON`t want to flash my notebook BIOS!)
I am sorry because of my stupid questions, but I have never before built or modified a notebook, I build tower PCs till 2010 and the GX70 is my second Notebook.
Thanks for your help and answers!
    Kind regards,
    Mystique

well i dont think so most gaming laptops lately have soldered CPU to motherboard which means you cannot change cpu chip :/ but if you could then you would need to find a manual that tells you what type of cpu's are supported but i dont think GX70 has support for cpu upgrade due to it's cpu is soldered to the motherboard.
I can be wrong since i tried to google up GX70 motherboard found diffirent motherboards most of them had nothing todo with a MSI laptop lolz so yeah correct me if i'm wrong.

  • CPU upgrade! Comments?

    Hi!
I just purchased the CPU upgrade for my 533MHz (DA) G4!
The CPU upgrade I bought from OWC just tonight. I've never heard of this one before
and I was wondering what users on these boards thought and what it's potentials can be.
It's a PowerLogix PowerForce55, Motorola/Freescale Superscalar MPC7455 PowerPC G4 800MHz processor, running at 1GHz. It has the heat sink preattached and it's supposed to be super easy to install.
It also says I need to update the firmware. What would this mean for this Mac? It already runs OS X 10.3.9.
I got it for $100. I thought it was a great deal.
    Could this run Leopard?
    Thank you,
    Mike

    Hi-
You need to have firmware v4.2.8.
    Downloads are here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1395
You must have OS 9 installed, and boot to OS 9 to update the firmware.
Open your System Profiler (About This Mac/More Info/Hardware), and see what firmware (Boot ROM) version is currently installed.
A 1GHz processor will allow install and run OS X Leopard.
You need a minimum of 512MB RAM (lots more recommended) and a DVD drive as other requirements.

  • AMD Athlon 64 3800+ cpu upgrade to AMD Athlon 64 X2

    Hello everyone,
First of all, I have been to cpu-upgrade.com and typed in my current (CPU)--> AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.40GHz (motherboard)--> ASUS A8M2N-LA (Naos) GL6.
According to the website, my AM2 Socket (940pin) is capable of upgrading to a Dual Core, Anyone know if that site is accurate or not? Any help would be nice. I need to get away from this single core.
    1) Some CPU models require a BIOS upgrade, which a BIOS upgrade for this board is not available.
    2) A lot of X2 Dual Cores work either using a 4400+, 4600+, and so on....
I do have a 550watt PSU installed, also I am using MSI Nvidia GeForce GT620 PCI-express 16x graphics, not using onboard.
I have read that some BIOS' upgrades terminate the onboard video, is that true? Basically, whatever I already have installed is current and up to date with all video/sound drivers, etc... If anybody very knowledgable knows for sure if an AMD Athlon 64 X2 will work in my system that would be nice. My specs below......
OS: Windows Vista Home Basic (32bit)
    CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.40GHz
    RAM: 2GB (GDDR2)
PSU: 550watt (all 20+4 for main cable to motherboard connected using all 24 pins + 4pin connector for CPU? I believe.
Sound: Realtek HD ALC888 High Definition Audio
Video: MSI Nvidia GeForce GT620 (GDDR3 with 2GB Video Memory).
Only thing I am bottle necking on is the CPU, and I would love to upgrade to Dual Core, once again, thank you for the help.

  • Is CPU upgrade on Satellite 2410-303 possible?

My Satellite 2410-303 has Pentium 4 Mobile 1.7GHZ processor. I want to upgrade its processor to Pentium 4 Mobile 2.8GHZ. I think that it is possible because its upper models have faster processor and that is unique difference between them.

  • Satellite M40x will not boot up after CPU upgrade test

I have an M40x Laptop. I took the CPU out of it to replace it with another to test the computer booted up fine so I shut down and took it out and put it's original CPU back in, and it would not boot. Now it will not boot up at all with either of the CPU's all. When I turn on the power all I get is a white screen for a few seconds and the laptop shuts itself back down. Both the CPU's are good because I have since tested them in other computers to make sure that was not the problem.
Anyone have any ideas on what is causing this??

    Im not surprised.
As far as I know Toshiba does not support any CPU upgrades and it's not advisable to do something like that.
Its a fact that the CPU replacement on the notebooks is not easy and mostly not recommended.
The processors used in portables are connected to the system board using a process called TCP (Tape Carrier Package). This is a permanent connection method and is used in the interests of miniaturization and heat dissipation.
Did you assign the new heat paste? Its necessary and important if you want to connect the CPU again.
So possibly this is a reason for the no booting.
I think more details you will get from the service guys in your country

  • CPU upgrades

I'd like to upgrade a tray-loading iMac with the CPU from one of the faster slot-loading ones - 350, 400, whichever.
I'd also like to swap a 450 or 500 MHz CPU from a DV SE that had firewire into the earlier, ordinary slot-loading version, which didn't.
Does anyone know if there's any reason there would be a problem doing either of these changes?
For that matter, if the DV motherboard's okay, any reason I couldn't use the whole thing in the slot-loader? I think there's a video problem, but if that's just a monitor thing and not on the board, it shouldn't be an issue.
    Thanks

you are correct, the slot loaders do not have a separate CPU card, its soldered directly to the logic board.
There are CPU upgrades available for tray loaders (don't know if any are actually still produced anymore, but they do exist), but the cost usually just isn't worth it. You could get a used slot loader for the same amount,a nd a used eMac or mac mini for a little bit more.

I've just bought an HP 8000 Elite SFF desktop (WB717ET#ABU) with a Pentium DualCore E5400 CPU running at 2.7GHz.
I was wondering what CPUs the Motherboard (Rev 0C by the looks of it) could accept in order to squeeze more performance out of it (and how simple such a CPU upgrade would be)?
