1.0.3 Problem w 80G Classic

After uppgrading to iPOD sw version 1.0.3, my iPOD ALWAYS restarts when it is turned off/on, halted, paused or put to "rest". This makes it impossible to listen to books etc where you want to continue where you paused.
iPOD Model: MB029 / Version 1.0.3 PC
Q1 - Can I fix this on 1.0.3?
Q2 - Can I re-install sw version 1.0.2?
If I cant resolve it I will return my iPOD to get reimbursed!

OK, I got it solved and tracked!
Solution: Reinstall the iPOD from scratch, using the 5 "R" process described on this supportsite. After this clean install, than the iPOD worked again, as it should. It continued to work after adding all my previous data. Do, happy sailing again.
Reason for failure: My iPOD contained +50G of files, mixed, mp3, video and jpegs. Every time I upgrade from 1.0.2 to 1.0.3 with data on the iPOD, the upgrade process fails, leading to the error I experienced. There is something incomplete in the upgrade process, going from 1.0.2 to 1.0.3.

  • 80G Classic Battery Problem

Has no-one but me had a problem with the 80g Classic battery running down at helter-skelter speed even when not in use and turned off?
One day everything as normal, next day battery will hold power equivalent to the time to recharge it (kind of 1:1 ratio in and out).
Problem is I don't know if it's a simple battery change solution or if something else has happened. Everything has been turned off, no extras, covers, etc and I've reset it about 20 times. Can a battery go from good to bad so suddenly? The thing is maybe 3 years old and it's had its fair share of use. Hooked up it runs as it always has, but as it stands its now basically non-portable. Don't really want to do a restore as many, many folders have been personalized and I can't see how this would work anyway.......
Please advise if you can. If not cheers anyway and hope no-one gets the same problem.
    Dave

One option is something like Griffin Technologies "Tune Juice" ...
    http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/tunejuice2
which takes 4xAAA batteries and is $30. You could then use rechargeable AAA batteries in it. Too bad it doesn't take AA batteries since rechargeable AA batteries tend to be easier to find I think. But there are other products out there like this one that will use standard batteries (9-volt, AA, & AAA usually) to hook up to and extend the battery life of an iPod. The advantage of these products is that in a pinch you can grab alkaline batteries at the airport gift shop or a local convenience store.
Just make sure any you look at EXPLICITLY states it will work with the Classic line as the newer iPods tend to be fussy about older chargers and power sources since they make use of the data pins now as well to initiate power and charging vs. the older iPods that only needed to see the two power pins.
    Cheers,

  • Forcing Ipod classic into disc mode, this helped me fix my 80g classic.

Nobody had an answer for my 80g classic that couldnt be unmounted. I found on a blog somewhere that if you press Menu and the center key until the apple logo appears and then press the center key and play, it forces it into disc mode. Before I did this I couldnt even get it to erase in disc utilities. It wouldnt do anything. After I forced it into disc mode it let me erase everything in disc utilities and restore. ***** that this forum was no help at all.

Its a software problem. I've been reading over the forums and noticed that a LOT of problems started around the same time, syncing problems ipods that aren't being recognized etc., I am not sure but on another thread it said to use a different software called WinAmp. I havent personally used it but others have to success, if i were you i would trade in that ipod for a zune to avoid this rather major software problem that is happening to a lot of ipod classics.

  • 80g classic disk still spins after shutdown

I have the battery drain symptoms on my 80g classic that are mentioned here a couple of times (from a full charge to nothing in a few hours when switched off). Tonight after having to charge again before I could sync, I was playing some music and then held down play/pause to shut down. It did shut down - apparently anyway. For some reason I then put the back of the Ipod to my ear (having removed the ear phone first of course :-)) and was surprised to hear the disk still whirring away. Left it for a minute or so and it was still whirring away so decided to turn it on and off again. But it would not turn on - no change to disk, still spinning away! So did the reset procedure and it came alive eventually and the disk had now stopped. Tried a few times to recreate it without success.
Now the battery drain only happens sometimes and I am guessing it is caused when the disk gets stuck spinning even though I have turned it off. Sooooooo, has anyone else noticed this? I am on 1.0.2 btw. Do I have a defective Ipod or is there something in the firmware that is causing this to happen apparently at random?

    Hello everybody,
I've got the same problem. (hd spinning, battery draining). But it only occurs when I select a song using the coverflow menu.
Everytime I want to open a menu or play a song I can hear the hd spinning but as soon as the iPod has gathered all the info it needs the hd will stop spinning, even when I am playing a song. Just before the hd stops spinning I can hear a clicking sound +(put your ear against your iPod)+
I've noticed when I select a song using the 'playlist' or 'album' menu the hd will start spinning and after a few seconds I hear a little click and then the hd stops. Or when I press&hold the play button the iPod shuts down and the hd stops spinning.
But when I select a song using the coverflow menu the hd starts spinnig and just like always I can hear the same little click but this time the hd will not stop. When I press&hold the play button the iPod will shut down but the hd keeps spinning. The only way the stop the hd is to go back to the coverflow menu or any other menu using the menu button. Then I can shut the iPod down by press&hold the play button.
I've been listeng to my music using the album menu for a couple of days now and the stamina of the battery is just like it should be.
So I think the battery draining is caused by the hd that keeps spinnig while listening to music or after shutdown.
And the not stopping of the hd spinning (with my iPod anyway) is caused by the coverflow menu or everytime I select a song using the coverflow menu.
beware coverflowbugs do excist and they feed on the energy of fully charged iPods

  • 80G Classic Ipod Stuck in Reset Loop, Please Help

    Hello,
My Ipod (80G classic) is stuck in the continuous reset loop showing only the apple logo. I have tried restoring it numerous times, to no avail. I have also tried uninstalling itunes and re-installing it, different versions also, this does not work either.
This is very frustrating, and I am finding no help on the apple site. Any suggestions?

I'm not clear if you've actually managed to get iTunes to restore the iPod yet. These steps should make it possible. Hold Menu+Select for about 6 seconds until the iPod resets, then hold Menu+Play as soon as the Apple logo appears, again for about 6 seconds to put the machine in disk mode. Connect the iPod to your computer, closing iTunes if it opens. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors*. Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive. Once these have been fixed you should be able to start iTunes and complete the restore process. I'd suggest you don't rush to put back all your music in one go. Test that the iPod works with a smaller playlist first.

  • Thin white line at top of ipod 80G classic screen

Would like to know if there is a way to get rid of this line, which is located across the top of the screen, in the area where the battery icon is located. The screen was fine then I downloaded the latest version of software for the 80G Classic and synced it. Next thing I knew I had this white line across the top of the screen. Is there a way to get rid of the line, or do I have to send the unit in and have Apple repair it? Only had the unit since December 2007.

    Oh - you are good!

  • Anyone else's Brand New 80g Classic have a dicky wheel?

I got a brand new 80g classic 2 weeks ago, and the wheel is just so unresponsive. sometimes its ok, but most times I really have to press hard to try and get my volume adjusted (and of course if you press to hard it becomes a button and skips to the next track)
This is the kind of thing I would expect to happen after a good few months perhaps, and even then only occasionally, but straight out of the box I find this pretty annoying.
So - as this happened to you, or have I just got a dud?!
    Thanks
    Hugh

    Hughey,
I have the same issue with my 80gb Classic. I have a cover I use for the gym and the clear rubber/plastic covering of the wheel is JUST thick enough to stop me from useing it. I have to take the Ipod OUT of the cover just to adjust volume and change albums.
Aside from that, I do get a little lag on the Ipod. Like you select a song and then you have to click the wheel a few times before you can adjust the volume, or you turn it on and it takes about 15 sections to scroll anywhere.
Like the last poster suggested, make sure your firmware is up to date.. I think it should be 1.1.1 by now, something like that. It helped a LITTLE but the main issue with the Classics is all of the features Apple jammed into them. Although it's COOl to have Coverflow it's not usefull and things like that feature slow down the Ipod dramatically sometimes (click wheel!).
You didn't get a dud, besides the fact that my click wheel can be frustrating at times the Ipod works GREAT, music, movies, everything is just fine. It's just something we have to deal with. I do sometimes miss my 30gb video, but I washed it on accident with my clothes so it died tragically .
But like I said before, just keep waiting for new firmware updates and hopefully Apple will fix that issue to the best of their abilities as soon as possible.
    Hope this helped,
    Dom.

  • 80g Classic. Many Problems. Help please?

I have had my ipod for 2 and a half years and, untill a month ago, never had a problem. The first problem was my ipod was corrupting songs individualy. Then it started corruting my full libary on my ipod. After that it stopped transfering the songs onto it after it got about half way done the transfer then it would corrupt all of them. Now its a paper weight. It is almost completely full with only 366mb left, and its all corrupt data. I looked it up on google and it says that the itunesDB file is corrupt. Itunes does not recognise it anymore and when I try to manually format it it doesnt work. Please help I'm going insane.

Here's some info about your ipod not showing up in itunes: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1363
and about restoring in windows: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339
Did you try to put it into disk mode to be able to format it before you restore? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363

  • Multiple problems with 80GB classic, don't know where to start.

    Hey guys,
I got an Apple classic 80GB for my bday early August and lately i've been having so many problems i dont know where to start, i'll try to explain them as best as i can.
*problem 1:* Whenever i plug my iPod into my PC, it locks up the system for about 5 minutes, then comes up with an error box saying that 'There is a problem with your iPod yadda yadda restore etc'.
I proceed to restore the iPod, then once its restored and reconnects itself, it repeats the cycle by freezing then telling me to restore. The only way i can do a restore and have it not give me an error is if i reboot when it is disconnected.
*Problem 2:* When i finally get it up and ready to sync, i go to sync all my files (About 2000 songs). It gets to around the 1500 song mark then says there is an error and the iPod disconnects itself.
It then instantaneously reconnects itself and starts syncing from where it left off.
Once it has then sync'd all of the music ad tells me its ready to be ejected. I eject the iPod and disconnected it.
I then go into the iPod and it has no songs/videos/photos, yet it has still used up about 15gb. If i reconnect it, it will just sit there for 5 minutes not syncing, it will then randomly say the sync is done and it will eject itself.
FINALLY after all that i have my music on there
*Problem 3* Once the songs are on the iPod, it becomes insanely laggy. If i navigate to a song and press play, it will take about 10 seconds for the actual song to play. The delay is just as bad for next song, pause etc. Even using it in my cars head unit causes it to lag.
*Problem 4* If i do get a song playing after all that, about 1/5 songs will just randomly skip to the next song without letting it play through.
I have all the latest iTunes/Firmware/Drivers for everything on my PC and iPod.
I have sent it back to Apple for repair yet they could not find anything wrong (Yeah right :|)
If anyone out there could help me please, im at my wits end with this infernal machine.
    Thankyou

*Outdated operating system:* Cant be, im running XP SP3 with the latest updates
*Computer needs updates:* I've got the latest drivers for all of my hardware, including BIOS
*Software interference:* THe only other program i have running in the background is Kaspersky Antivirus, but that is disabled when i try to sync
*Damaged Files* Possibly, i played through the album where it froze at and even reo-imported it, it seemed to play and import fine
*Unregistered .dll files (Windows):* Tried this fix, but it did the same problems as the original post. Such as freezing on a certain song, then reconnecting itself only to put the music on there, yet it is really laggy
*Damaged disk structure:* Tried this fix, didn't help
*Corrupt iPod photo Cache* I have never tried to put photos on it, so i dont see how this could be it.
*Lost connection:* Checked it, it's very firm and unlikely to come loose.
*Conflict with third-party hardware:* I dont have any connected, nor have i ever
*Bad hardware:* I tried it on all of my 8 USB drives. I dont use any hubs or firewire cards so this couldn't be it.
Also i forgot to add that 1/5 times i go to restore, it locks the computer up and windows gives me a 'delayed write failed' bubble

  • 2014 Sync problems on iPod classic / Please help!! 2014

    Hello community!
I really need some help with this problem I am having... I have done some research for the past few days on my own but nothing I have found has helped.
First some specs on my device...
iPod Classic: 80 GB (I believe this is iPod with video, assumed on the fact that it supports movie syncs)
iPod software version: 1.1.2 (up to date according to iTunes)
    Formatted for Windows
Syncing to Dell Inspiron with Windows 7
iTunes updated to current version (11.4)
I had much mof my music library uploaded onto my iPod for quite sometime. (close to 14,000 songs synced at 192 kbps) I often like to put my iPod on shuffle and just listen to whatever comes on, but here and there I will skip songs until something I am in the mood for comes on... I began to notice that my iPod was freezing (ON THE DISPLAY ONLY!!! Playback through speakers continued) when I would skip through songs... Once the screen dimmed however, I could once again skip to the next song. I figured this was a problem concerning corrupted files or something similar. These are the steps I took..
1.) Updated iTunes to version 11.4 and checked for further updates
2.) ATTEMPTED to check disk within Windows (was unsuccessful and heard the iPod making a lot of 'clicking' noises from within the casing)
3.) Performed an iPod restore within iTunes
4.) Performed a check disk within Windows and recovered any bad sectors (SUCCESSFUL)
5.) Selected 'Music' sync and the option for 'Entire music library'
    6.) UNCHECKED 'Include music videos'
7.) Reconfigured settings as they were before and made slight changes..
a.) Checked 'Open iTunes when this iPod is connected'
b.) Checked 'Sync only checked songs and videos'
c.) Checked 'Convert higher bit rate songs to '192 kbps' AAC'
d.) Unchecked 'Manually manage music and videos'
         e.) Unchecked 'Enable disk use'
8.) Began a sync on my iPod... With well over 10,000 songs I knew this was going to be a lengthy process.. I left computer unattended..
When I returned to my computer, iTunes was unresponsive... The only way I could get iTunes to show was to minimize a Window on top of iTunes. iTunes states 'Syncing iPod... Do not disconnect' but does not show a rolling progress bar.. I cannot cancel sync, I cannot eject iPod, I cannot close iTunes...
I attempt to eject iPod device through windows, UNSUCCESSFUL (Cannot unmount generic volume while the device is in use)
I 'Ctrl+Alt+Dlt' to Task Manager and End Program 'iTunes' UNSUCCESSFUL..
I End Process 'iTunes.exe *32' and eject iPod through Windows SUCCESSFUL
When the iPod displayed 'OK to disconnect with load bar, I disconnected the device.
As soon as this bar was full iPod IMMEDIATELY rebooted completely and powered back up with only 20 songs synced. (Frustration ensues)
Confused and thinking maybe my screen saver caused an interruption during the sync, I changed screen saver and power saving options to eliminate any possible interruption, REPEATED STEPS 3-8 ABOVE, and started sync again.. Left computer unattended
Again, coming back to computer much later, iTunes was in the same unresponsive state. Closed iTunes and began looking for answers on the internet. Any and all answers I found stated I should restore iPod, update iTunes, run diagnostics tests, etc., etc...
All of which I had done EXCEPT for running a diagnostics test..
Running a diagnostics test: I ran only the tests concerned with 'Device Connectivity' and 'Device sync' tests.. Here are the very interesting results I yielded from these tests...
    Device Connectivity Test:
    Support services:
'iPod support service is running.' Status: GREEN
'iTunes Helper is running.' Status: GREEN
'Apple Mobile Device is running.' Status: GREEN
    Ports:
         'USB ports verified.' Status: GREEN
'No FireWire (IEEE 1394) ports found.' Status: GREEN
         'iPod found.' Status GREEN
    ALL TESTS PASSED
    Device Sync Tests
    Results:
No iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad found. Status: RED
    ONE OR MORE TESTS FAILED
I am at a loss, I realize that Apple has discontinued the iPod Classic but does that mean iTunes will no longer support these devices!?
And if ANYONE has ANY suggestions for possible steps I can take to regain syncing privileges to my iPod once again, please let me know!
Also, I have diagnostics test results saved on my desktop and available to post if required!
Thank you for any and all help!
    -Chris

    !UPDATE!
I made several adjustments to my sync options and made some progress and am now trying to sync in 'stages' as I like to think of them.
    Here is what I did:
1.) Under 'Music' tab in 'My iPod' options I opted to sync 'Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres'
2.) Selected a small portion of tunes I know I want on my iPod (ended up being close to 3,500 songs.
3.) Under 'Summary' tab I unchecked the 'Sync only checked songs and videos' box
4.) Unchecked 'Convert higher bit rate songs to ___ AAC'
    5.) Checked 'Enable disk use'
    6.) Ran a SUCCESSFUL sync!
I am now running a sync keeping the same adjustments in place and have added 6,556 songs. (SYNC IN PROGRESS)
I am wondering if trying to convert that many songs to a lower bit rate is causing sync problems and it appears as if I am at least making progress on this. HOWEVER, I really prefer to decrease the bit rate on my songs so I may fit more on my iPod... Usually most of the files I have in iTunes are at 320 kbps with a select few at 192 kbps. I would like to make everything the way it was before my first iPod restore.. 192 kbps, but this also seems to be the cause of the sync problems I am having? Anyone else have a comment on this?
    Thanks again
    -Chris

  • I pod 80g classic not happy!

Just a bit anoyed . Just purchased my first i pod after reading up on it on apple website.
Problem arose when trying to play videos through my in car pioneer d3 player with ipod connection.
After reading manual on line, tried to turn tv out on as described ! wouldn't let me ! Spoke to retailer, they didn't have a clue.Spoke to apple they said had to be wired to apple cables. Gutted !!!
Spoke to pioneer they wern't aware of any problem as fifth generation has no problems playing.
Before buying i pod I checked to make sure on the website manual it had tv out facility. And in the description it says to turn tv out to on or ask then connect to tv. It doesn't say this wont be possible until connected through apple universal dock and cable which will not be compatible with any other accessories other than apple.
Surely apple should have made it very clear that 80g and 160g ipods have been locked out of tv out.
I purchased expensive in car system which boasted i pod and ipod video function
then bought what i was led to believe compatible i pod !
Thumbs down to apple for lack of communication with customers and retailers as neither off us knew of problem until purchased.
Best of it is retailer wont take back i pod because of scratches to back of case.
Any answers to getting over problem? can software be changed so tvout not locked out ?

If your iPod doesn't have engraving and you bought it from an Apple Store, you have 14 days to return it, but you can only get an exchange, and not a refund.
Otherwise, sell it on eBay or Craigslist and buy a 5th gen. The video out doesn't work like it used to because the video signal is no longer sent through the headphone jack.

  • New Problems in Tiger Classic (or iMac G5)

    Hi folks,
I have the last version of Managing Your Money ever released and we have always been able to use it in Classic without any trouble at all. However, since we got Mac OS 10.4 (or maybe is was since we got the iMac G5; since they were nearly simultaneous, I'm not sure) MYM and/or Classic seems to display symptoms of a memory or other resource leak. That is, every window I open takes longer to open than the last one. Eventually, the program becomes practically unusable and I have to restart. If I keep using it without restarting, the iMac will eventually freeze and the force quit window won't even appear.
We have never had this problem on previous versions of OS X, nor on previous models of iMac (we've used OS X with classic on two different G3 iMacs and a G4 iMac).
Does anyone know of any differences that should be significant? Are there any Classic extensions that are known to have problems in Tiger or on G5 iMacs?
    Sincere thanks,
    Bill
    iMac G5 20 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I don't know MYM does it make no difference if you allocate more memory to it with file>Get Info>Memory, please?
My own G5 runs classic exactly as my older G4 does, and since my configuratin is hardly likely to match yours, what does that prove?
If it was my Mac, I'd copy the Classic System Folder, set the copy in Classic System Preference, set its Extension Manager Set to Mac OS (Base) then Restart Classic and reinstall MYM, which should now have nothing to interfere with it…

  • [PLEASE HELP!] Problems with iPod Classic 160GB.

Okay, I was about to sync my iPod Classic 160GB and go to bed. I plugged it in and everything was good. I am not sure if it was syncing yet, but it fell off the cord because my HP laptop moved. I wasn't worried at the time, The apple screen came up so I pressed Middle Button+Menu to reset it, then I plugged it back in. When I plugged it back in it said I had to format the drive in G.. The screen of the iPod said Connected Eject before disconnecting and had the circle arrows like when it is loading. It seems to be working fine when I unplug it.
But anyways, When I unplugged it a second time (I did click Disconnect in the toolbar on the actual device, not in iTunes) it didn't work again, and it brought up the grey apple screen again, then went to the language. so I plugged it back in. Then I said OK to the reformat. I clicked Default settings to the format and left the Volume Label blank because I don't know what that is...
It said WARNING: Formatting your iPod will delete all files on it, or something along the lines of that. so, I said okay, I'll just resync it, just get on the reformat. When I clicked format it said that it couldn't format my iPod... So, once again, I disconnected it, ejecting from the actual device in the toolbar, and it was absolutely cleared asking me for the Language. It keeps doing this every time I plug it in, and even when I switch USB slots. it wont read into my iTunes either.
I am really sad, and please answer because my iPod is basically my life, this is my worst nightmare come true.
    PLEASE ANSWER QUICK, Thanks...
