1.1.2 Issues deleting Smart Albums?

Hi, I just installed Aperture today for the first time. As I am trying it, I created a Smart Album, which now I cannot delete, nor modify. After several attempts the library has been rebuild, yet the problem persists. A few questions:
(1) Any suggestions on how to solve this?
(2) Should | can I go back to 1.1?
(3) How do you pro-actively rebuild the database?
Bad start to be my first experience.
Thanks SO much.

To delete a smart album should be a simple matter of selecting the album, then RH mouse click/Delete Smart Album.
If this doesn't work, quit Aperture. to rebuild, hold down the <Option> and <Apple-Command> keys and, while holding, launch Aperture. This will cause a dialog to be displayed .... Rebuild Later or Rebuild Now. Choose rebuild Now and after the rebuild is complete, try deleting the Smart Album again.
Another option would be to edit the rules, and see if this "unblocks" the logic gotcha if that's what it is.
Put your first experience behind you ... Aperture 1.1.2 isn't perfect yet but is an absolute boon for me.

  • Smart Albums not Refreshsing

    Hi,
I've set up Smart Albums based on whether photos in a project have particular keywords i.e. the album shows only photos that do not contain either the keyword "Artwork 1" or the keyword "Artwork 2". When I choose an image and apply the keyword "Artwork 1" with one of the keyword buttons, the photo disappears from the Smart Album, exactly as expected
However if I select several photos, and do the same thing, all the selected photos get the keyword (you can see this from the metadata badge which appears after applying the keyword, and also in the metadata inspector). However only the "primary" disappears. I put primary in quotes because I don't have primary only switched on, but the one with the slightly thicker border is the only way that disappears. The others stay in the Smart Album even though they no longer satisfy the criteria for selection in that album.
The only way I've found to make Aperture refresh the contents of the album is to quit out, and then relaunch. When I come back in the other photos with the keyword in them disappear.
Does anyone else have this issue where Smart Albums do not always refresh automatically? Is there a better way to force a refresh than quitting out?
    Thanks in advance
    David

    Hi Allan,
I don't think so. There are 309 images in the project. I shot maybe 15 new ones last night which appeared instantly in the Smart Album because they didn't have "Artwork 1" or "Artwork 2" keywords applied. Then I selected 3 images, applied the keyword, so it only had to cope with 3 changes.
I don't think of that as excessive numbers, especially since out of the 15 images, 14 disappeared instantly when the keyword was applied, but 1 didn't

  • Smart Albums Don't Update

I've been having an issue with smart albums. It seems that in iPhoto 11, they won't update automatically. I can force them to update by getting info on the album's settings and then choosing "ok" without changing anything. This, however, is a royal pain. Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Be sure to send a bug report to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html.  I've experienced the same problem. The albums have updated sometimes when I go to another album or event and then back to it but not consistently.

  • Does deleting a picture or video from a Smart Album delete in the Event?

Does deleting a picture or video from a Smart Album delete in the Event?

No - deleting from a smart album does nothing - either selecting a video or photo and pressing delete or dragging the photo or video to the iPhoto trash - it has no effect - does not delete from the smart album nor does it delete from te event
Exactly how are you deleting from a smart album?
A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.

  • Deleting photos from main library while in Smart Album.

anyone know of a key sequence to delete a photo from the library when viewing the photo in a smart album?
I have over 1700 photos. Sometimes I want to delete all photos within a smart album but you can not do that by just selecting delete; that only deletes it from the album and not the library. as of right now the easies way I have found to do this is to perform a batch change and rename all files the same name, then perform a search within the main library for those files and then delete them. I refuse to think Apple didn't think about creating a "delete from main library" shortcut.

Option Command Delete works for Smart albums also. At least that is what it says in the iPhoto Help/iPhoto keyboard shortcuts in the menu bar.

  • Can't delete photos in smart album view

Assuming we all know how smart albums work, let's jump to why I can't delete a photo from a smart album. In all other views, it seems, I can delete images. When I'm scanning through 500 pictures tagged with Christmas in my Christmas Smart Album and come across one I want to delete, I can't do so. What's worse, going back to Photos view and trying to find that picture to delete it is almost impossible when you're looking through a library of 6,000 images.
Am I missing something? Do I really have to find a work around for this? Why has Apple left out DELETE from Smart Albums?

To delete a photo that's in a smart album you need to use the CommandOptionDelete key combination to move it to the trash. If you just want to remove the photo from the album you will need to change on that photo the feature that the smart album is set to look for.

  • Iphoto-I inadvertantly created a smart album.  It has captured all recent photos in it I want to delete it but need to know if this will delete the same photos in their albums?

iphoto- I accidently created a smart album which is capturing all current new photos.  I put them in their  own album but I can't delete them in the smart album.  Can I delete the smart album without losing the photos in the other albums? larrybksfld

Yes you can delete the Smaert Album. It will not delete the photos.

  • Can't delete photos while viewing a smart album

How come iPhoto won't let me delete images that are being displayed in a smart album? This is very frustrating!

Ok, I tried that with no success.
    1. flagged some ugly photos in a smart album
    2. pressed alt key
    3. pressed apple key
    4. pressed delete key
    Nothing happens. Ugh!
Once again - that is not what I suggested - using different key combinations than specified will not work
flag the photos you want to delete and _*depress the control and command keys and press delete to delete all flagged photos*_
    1 - flag photos
2 - depress the control key (The option - alt - key is not involved or mentioned)
3 - depress the command (apple) key
4 - press the delete key
This will delete all flagged photos

  • Predefined smart albums deleted

I discovered that my predefined smart album "rejected" is gone. How can I get it back ? If I create a new smart album that contains my rejected images, how can I insert that smart album into the same position where the previous predefined smart album was ?

Browse to (Your User Name)/Library/Application Support/Aperture/ and delete the file "BuiltInSmartAlbums.plist". Restart Aperture, and the built-in albums will be restored.
You can not create a smart album and drag it into the predefined albums area, unfortunately. It would be nice to have this as an option, though.

    Thanks!

You will need to restore your phone as a new one using the itunes on your computer.  This WILL erase everything on the phone but it will let you change the name of the phone and then you can add content to it.

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:

    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Smart Album issue

When I upgraded to 1.5, some of my photos metadata changed to the date of the upgrad. Also when I click on a smart album, it states no selections. The only time it works is when I unchecked an option in the smart album (Keyword for an example) and check it again. I need to do everytime. Photos I move to regular album is just gone. Luckily I had them backup, but I had to keyword and rate all over. I do have them in the Aperture as Managed.
    Any help would be helpful.

Ah.. I think I have the same problem (just posted it !) - but these smart albums were created in 1.5 so could be a 1.5 bug ?

  • Can't set smart album pictures as desktop backgrounds.

i have imported 'without copying to library' a whole bunch of pics into iphoto and have created smart albums. now i went to 'change desktop background' by control clicking on the desktop and am selecting a pictures from one of the smart albums but its only displaying a blue background. this is true for all smart albums and normals ones as well. when i select an image from the other folders they work fine. what could be the reason?
the primary reason of importing stuff to iphoto was so that they are easily available across applications.

    simport
Do you know of any reason why the Desktop pref pane should not be able to use photos in a "referenced" iphoto library
It's just the nature of the beast.
but I just don't trust it enough to do what it will with my photos by having them stored in the iPhoto library.
    What are you afraid of?
When you import a pic into iPhoto in the default Managed mode all it does is make a byte by byte copy of the pic. Nothing else. It's an exact copy. It makes no alterations, adds nothing, removes nothing.
The pic is stored in the Finder. Yes, it's in a Unix Style Package file, but apart from all the ways to access your pics I'll describe in a moment, if you want to look inside the package you can do so at any time: Simply right click on the iPhoto Library and select 'Show Package Contents' from the resulting menu. A Finder window will open and you'll see the Library inside.
There are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three core folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner. (As your Library is referenced the files will be aliases rather than the actual files.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Remember: iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
Running a referenced library has a number of pitfalls - apart from the fact that System Preferences cannot use the files.
    1. Import and deleting pics are more complex procedures
    2. You cannot move or rename the files on your system or iPhoto will lose track of them on systems prior to 10.5 and iPhoto 08. Even with the later versions issues can still arise if you move the referenced files to new volumes or between volumes.
    3. Most importantly, migrating to a new disk or computer can be much more complex.
Always allowing for personal preference, I've yet to see a good reason to run iPhoto in referenced mode unless you're using two photo organisers.
If disk space is an issue, you can run an entire iPhoto Library from an external disk:
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
If you're concerned about accessing the files, there are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:
For 10.5 users: You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Apple-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
To upload to a site that does not have an iPhoto Export Plug-in the recommended way is to Select the Pic in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export and export the pic to the desktop, then upload from there. After the upload you can trash the pic on the desktop. It's only a copy and your original is safe in iPhoto.
This is also true for emailing with Web-based services. If you're using Gmail you can use iPhoto2GMail
If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
Or, if you want to access the files with iPhoto not running, then create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use THIS
    Other options include:
    1. *Drag and Drop*: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    2. *File -> Export*: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    3. *Show File*: Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.
Your choice, obviously, but best to be aware of all the ramifications. By all means post back if you require more info.
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
Other information that may offer comfort:
Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
Mind you, I don't suggest that you change over in one go. I think the best thing to do is create a new Library (Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library') and set it as a Managed Library. Import 50 or 100 pics an explore it, see how it works and see if that does anything for your confidence.

  • Problems Emptying REJECTED Smart Album

My REJECTED smart album has 700+ images in it and I want to delete all of them - versions and masters. I have done this plenty of times by highlighting all of the images and then using the Delete Masters And All Versions selection from the File menu. Now it's only deleting one image at a time when I do this. Please help.

I can't replicate this behavior. I thought maybe you had Primary Only turned on, but I can delete multiples in my rejected Smart Album even with it turned on.
You could try creating a new project, dragging them all into it then deleting the project.
    or
Maybe it's a permissions issue. Try repairing permissions with Disk Utility.

  • Photos deletes from albums when deleting from photo stream.

I just updated to the new Photos App. If  I take a picture with my iPhone, it appears on the photo stream on my Mac, of course. However, if I move the photo to an album, and then try to delete the photo from my photo stream, Photos also deletes the photo from the album! This happens even if I place the photo in a Smart Album. I tried following the Apple instructions given. They said to click on a photo I wanted to keep on my computer, and then click on the "share" option, Then I would be given the option to save the file to my computer. However, I am not given that option at all. I am only given the option to save it to iCloud  or some other cloud-based place. I only want to save it on my computer, not on iCloud. I have iCloud turned off, but photo stream turned on. Right now, the only way to keep pictures in albums is to go to the "recently deleted" file and "recover" them. This seems absurd to me. There has got to be a better way. Is anyone else having this same problem?
This also happens with any other photos from my computer that I manually place into Photos. They get dumped into the Photo Stream, the no-man's land where they are temporarily there but not really there. And I cannot move them out of this temporary holding place without going through the above process of deleting them from photo stream and everywhere else and then recovering them. Help!

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.
