1:1 Preview Performance

Although I render 1:1 previews and as soon as I do it moving from image to image is instantaneous, after I apply some metadata and some adjustments in the development module it takes a few seconds to render preview when I move from image to image.
I run LR 2.3 on a MacPro 2.66ghz (2007) with 16GB RAM. LR Catalog and Library are on internal fast 1TB drive less than half full.
I process 21MPx files form canon 1Ds MK III in RAW format and some are processed with Photoshop CS4 and saved within LR.
Is this level of performance normal or is something wrong with my machine/set up?
Thanks,
Francesco Tonelli

Hi John,
Thanks for your reply.
I used to render Standard preview on import to all my images.
Recently I decided to start 1:1 on import on all images, since I don't mind waiting after importing, if that would gain me speed when I work on the images.
To be honest I am not noticing an improvement after I start using the development module. I might start to go back to standard previews...
But I wish response would be quicker.
Would be nice if in future versions of LR they would put an option to write all XMPs automatically at the end of one session on quit. This way the system would be faster when you use it and still you would not forget to save the XMPs at the end.
Performance, performance...seems not to be ever enough!
Best,
Francesco

  • Slow performance while loading the reports while previewing the report in sql server data tools

    Hi there,
I am facing a weird issue where I am able to load and view deployed report in report manager in no time (in a second) but the same report is taking almost two minutes for preview
Around 2500 records are to be displayed in it.
My report shows two area charts.

    Hi Manisha,
When previewing a report, Report Designer need connect to the report data sources, run dataset queries, cache the data on the local computer, process the report to combine data and layout, and render the report. The report processor also runs all the queries
for datasets in the report using the current parameter defaults, and saves the results as a local data cache (.rdl.data) file.

  • Preview's PDF text select ignores columns and misses word spaces

I have a number of scanned pdf newspaper articles that I was attempting to copy the text from. Preview appears to register the existence of columns, as there is a pale blue background between the columns.
However when I use the text select tool, it completely ignores the column - and just selects across all columns. And when I paste the text into my text editor, it's missing all the spaces between the words, and the font size is always huge.
Conversely, Adobe reader in XP has no problem selecting by column, and the pasted text is also an exact replication of the original content. I don't know why Preview performs so badly in this regard? Anyone else experience any issues with pdf text select?

Anyone else experience any issues with pdf text select?
    Yes, and not just recently.
There is a reason Preview is named, well, preview. It is not an authoring environment and PDFs are not meant to serve in that context either...unless maybe you understand all of inherent the font traps, tricks & tips and how to tune your scanning/OCR software to keep rework to a minimum.
Scanning PDFs is always tricky, and without the occasional heavy metal to bring to the task, it just seems to be that more problematic.
Keep trying, but I'd really suggest to look to other tools at this time.

  • After Effects preview help

I'm struggling to understand how my AE play and preview performance is so bad. I've seen the generic posts on AE performance but I'm wondering if I'm doing something pathologically wrong here given the severity of the problem.
I'm new to AE on the Mac, I used it some on the PC. I have a new iMac 5k 4GHz w/ 32GB RAM. I'm running After Effects CC 2014. I've loaded in a 21 second 1920x1080 @60Hz clip. I've not touched anything beyond loading in the clip, not created any content at all, yet it plays back with RAM preview at 10Hz.
I set the image preview size to custom 25x25 pixels, so the image I'm looking at is something you might see on an old Commodore 64:
And it still only goes 30Hz.
Is there some default setting that could be sinking my performance? Or is 1920x1080@60 just not going to play back?

It should playback correctly but to say what could be issue with your playback please send us some more specs:
    - how many discs you have on your comp?
    - is any of your disc SSD or just Hdd
    - if you have only HDDs tell us if you have any other software that is reading/writing on that disc when you try to play that clip on AE
In my opinion in your case the HDD will be that bottle neck that slow down everything.

  • Slow performance while integrating data with ODI while open report

In ODI i have a schedulled package that runs every 4 hours, this package loads data from an DB table to BAM.
Normally each execution loads about 4000 records and takes about 7 seconds to be completed.
However, in some executions the same 4000 records take about 30 minutes to be loaded into BAM; normally this happens when a user has a BAM report open in the browser.

  • Image preview improvements

Mush as I love lightroom it sure could use a little TLC to improve preview quality and performance.  Here are some of my issues:
Inital import and image culling.  I want to be able to efficiently go through the images on my card and elliminate obvious culls with poor focus and composition.  To do this I need to be able to check them out at 100%.  The import module does this, but there is a problem with the caching algorithm, and after 10-20 images performance starts to bog down and the lag increases to bring up the next image.  PhotoMechanic speeds through the images, and even the windows explorer is faster.
I know I could import them all, render 1:1 previews, and then cull.  That can take an additional 30-60 minutes with an import of 500-1000 images.  Perhaps if we had the ability to view embedded previews in the library module we could import all the images and quickly cull, then build LR previews.  Also, see point #2.
I am continually frustrated by the way previews are rendered in LR.  Occasionally after rendering 1:1 previews some images will not render sharp in the library, even when zoomed to 1:1.  Here is an example of a screen shot of loupe view in the library:
and the same from the develop module:
I have tried zooming in to 1:1 and back and rebuilding a 1:1 preview to no avail.  I had to reload LR to get the preview to render properly.  I see this on a periodic basis.
It can take a long time for LR to get around to rebuilding previews of images that have been edited in develop and you get to see "Loading..." as you move through the library in loupe view.  I frequently have to tell LR to render 1:1, go have a coffee and come back.
I find the same thing on both PC and Mac platforms.  My library preview settings are: preview size 2048, medium quality, never discard 1:1.  My ACR cache is 50GB.  My executables, library and images are all on separate high speed HDs.
With larger imports (200+) it is much faster to do the initial image cull in PhotoMechanic, copy the keepers to the hard drive, and then add to LR library.  It sure would be nice if the image previews performance and quality could be optimized to facilitate image culling and review after editing and at least be competitive with other software.

    Hi pangolingo,
Thanks for the bug report and feature request.
We're trying to be clever about the default file type selected when you click on the Download Asset arrow icon. If the layer has a Generator tag, we will respect that, and preselect those settings. E.g., if the layer name is 'hero_01 jpg9' we'd preselect JPG and 90% quality.
If no Generator tag is present in the layer name, we default to JPG and 80%.
We'll consider some smarter defaults - good idea.

  • Can't do ram preview, but why?

    Hello,
I've been asking this question allready in several forums. I got a problem with ram preview in After Effects.
    My PC system:
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1055T
    Mainboard/Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-870A-UD3
Graphic Card: Gainward GTX 460 GS 2048MB GDDR5
    HDD: WD 500MB
    Ram: 12GB SO-DIMM DDR3 A-Data Value 1333 CL9
    Windows 7
    After Effects CS5
Now when I want to do a ram preview it gives me only about 1,5 seconds, then it stops rendering. Enabling the multicore function will lead to an error message: "Not enough ram installed". When I click on "Details" in pre-settings window in AE, it tells me:
    Installed ram: 12GB
    Current Ram usage: 0,31 GB
    Permissible Ram usage: 0,4 GB
    Max. usable memory: 12 GB
    Max. allowed memory: 0,4 GB
    Minimum required memory: 0,4 GB
Isn't this weird? It seems like AE is not checking that there is 12 GB installed.
PS: In the settings I have set "Ram reserved to other applications" to 1 and "Ram available for AE" to 11.

    I have win7 64bit.
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe After Effects CS5\  and all the files are actually in \Support Files\
I've found some talk online about the problem being tied to the Dynamic Link processor. But I have allowed my Dynamic Link manager through my firewall and nothing has happened for me. I've uninstalled AE and had no luck either. I reinstalled it and the problem was still there. I re-installed the latest patch and still nothing. Oddly, I have noticed the Premiere lists my RAM for other programs at 0 now too. I had previously set that to 3GB.
Are there other .dlls I need to permit through the firewall?

  • Not enough memory to complete preview?

While working on Illustrator CS3 file  it switches to outline view and error message comes up with " not enough memory to complete preview " If I go to view preview sometimes it returns but generally I hve to save and close nd reopen to get out of outline view. Is there a way I should allocate more memory.
The file is only 2,8 MB I have 4G or ram

The file is only 2,8 MB
That doesn't matter. File size on the disk is as irrelevant as... Well, I'll spare you the vulgarisms. What matters, is the type of objects and how they are combined using blending modes and transparencies. Similarly, any raster effects like drop shadows will lead to similar problems, if the document raster resolution is only set hig henough. If you get my meaning: A few simple boxes with very large drop shadows and transparent areas could trigger the error, while on the otehr hand a million objects with no transparencies would behave just fine. so in order to fix that, you should look in the things I mentioned. especially document raste resolution in relation to the document size can affect preview performance notably.

  • Is There A Simple Text Editor/Composter & Line Art Plug-In Available

Yes, I know it has been addressed in other posts in the past but I wanted to know if any new tools are available since the update to 3.XX, outside of open a picture in a "Book" project and adding text in a border or downloading BorderFX, neither of which provide a direct result.
For such an advanced piece of software, I find it infurirating that the only way to create simple focus cicles, highlight boxes, insert arrows, lines or create and insert text directly on an image after cleaning it up is to
Import > Save > Export > Reopen In the OSX Built-in Image Preview > Perform Functions Using Its Tools > Re-Save Version.
Even the most rudimentary photo altering programs like MS Paint and have this basic toolset in the standard the package. How or rather why would Apple klutz this up?

I can respect that thousands of users have accepted the current status-quo of these applications,
What is there to accept? it would be different, if Aperture claimed to be a program for graphics compositing, but it is not. Aperture is a tool for a different purpose.
Here is how Aperture is advertized in the store:
Aperture gives you all the tools you need to uncover the hidden potential in your photos. It brings you even more advanced ways to organize, browse, and perfect images.
So you can make every shot your best shot.
And that does Aperture really well. If you want a painting program, why buy Aperture?

  • Which NVIDIA graphics card for CS4 & CS5.5 Premiere?

I just upgraded to CS5.5 Production Premium but I'm still using XP 32bit. That means I had to load the CS4 version of Premiere and After Effects. Sooner or later I'll upgrade to 64bit Win but in the mean time which graphics card will give me the best bang for the buck and still be useful for CS5.5 later? Money isn't an issue, I just don't want to pay for something and not benefit from it. What's worse is Adobe doesn't even list cards newer than the 8800 and Quadro FX for CS4! Weren't GTX cards available before CS5 came out? Do I need to update a file in CS4 apps to make them accept cards for GPU processing?
Adobe and NVIDIA keep pushing the Quadro cards but when you look at the benchmarks it looks like the GTX cards do just as well. I will use the system for gaming sometimes so DX11 is a must. I have a watercooled i7 920 OC @ 4.0GHz and very stable, temps never go above 60C under full load. I have 6GB RAM and use a memory handler to access the RAM over what XP can use, and use it for virtual mem and caches etc. But my current graphics card is a slightly OC'd 9800GT w/512MB. My system doesn't like to scrub video that isn't rendered unless it's at lower resolutions and obviously I'd like rendering to be as fast as possible.
    Looking around I see:
    GTX560-TI @ $240
    GTX570 @ $300
    GTX480 @ $300
    GTX570 @ $300
    GTX580 @ $460
    Quadro 4000 @ $550
    Quadro 5000 @ $1200
So what's the secret? Where's the sweet spot?
    TIA

The "secret" to MPE bliss is to get the video card AND Win7 64bit AND load your CS5.5. I really don't think that the video card would help much running CS4 on 32bit. Regarding which card, I'd say the sweet spot since you want to game and use CS5.5 would be to go with a GTX 480 with two or three fans (single fan reference design is too LOUD). Also, if you are not going to Win7 right away, delay your purchase and the next GEN of NVidia will be closer or out and you may either want one of the new smaller die-size cards or you could benefit form lower prices on what's available today.
    Jim
So you're saying on Win32 and CS4 Pr, Ae, AME, the graphics card doesn't matter at all? That I won't see any improvement over my 512MB 9800GT?
If I was to narrow it down even farther, the most important aspect would be in the "preview" performance. I can always render when I'm not using the system but sometimes the preview windows hang while working on a project. The problem worsens as the resolution increases or as the project gets more complicated. I had the same problem with PP1.5 which is why I decided to bite the bullet and upgrade to see if a newer version would help.
Cooling isn't an issue as long as a water block is available for my next card. I've read the 570 & 580 may be the same reference layout and use the same coolers, I'm still looking into that. I know I can liquid cool the 480, 560TI, 580. I have no idea about the Quadro's, I've never seen a block for those.
I'd like to go to Win64 but other software etc is keeping me from getting there soon. I'm looking into dual booting but have read about lots of problems with folder/file sharing issues when going from XP to Win7. I keep all files/projects on a seperate drive and some are shared over a network. If MS hasn't solved the sharing issues I'm forced to stick with XP. I have too many files that need read/write access and Win7 is stated to set all shares to read only. I'm still researching if it's been resolved.
So it's important to know if anything will help CS4 because as stated above, it'll make more sence to wait for the next gen cards for use in CS5.5.
The bottom line is, I built this system from the ground up just a few years ago before Win64 was so popular. I used the very best components (the 9800GT is actually the lowest componet I bought because gaming wasn't that important at the time). I'm running steady overclocked @ 4.0 and boot from an SSD drive. The data drives are 7200RPM and I bought the fastest RAM I could at the time. Obviously people were editing happily a few years ago on equipment inferior to mine. What's the catch? What am I missing to run smoothly on Win32? I'm assuming it's the graphics card because it's the only place I skimped. Maybe I have a software conflict keeping any version of Pr from working smoothly.
Being 3 gens behind, and mediocre at that, I thought the card might be a good place to start.

  • Very Slow Scrolling with Images

I'm running Framemaker 11 on a Windows 7, 64-bit machine with an i7 processor at 2+ ghz and 8.0 MB RAM.
My Frame files, with imported/referenced images, are scrolling extremely slowly. When I say slow, I mean as the page scrolls into view it freezes for 10 - 20 seconds before "catching up" and displaying the page.
I have a "background" image on my master pages that contains simple graphics for the top header and some borders to delineate areas of the page. Those backgrounds are imported. Thjese imported files are about 1.1 MB.
My remaining images are imported by reference on the various body pages. They are .ai files and are 2.5 - 5 (ish) MB in size.
I've been searching for an answer. My deadline is going to pass my by while I wait for pages to load. Please help!

    > ... I have read that JPGs aren't the way to go in FM ...
We convert them to EPS as well. EPS does raster. It does, however, always come in at "100%" in FM, and you cannot learn the dpi from FM. You can choose CYMK or RGB, depending on your color management needs.
    > any advice on a better file type for screenshots and photos?
Screenshots are a different matter. Because they tend to contain long repeats of single pixel colors, we use TIF for that, as they compress well with any of the repeat-count compressions. You could also use EPS, but the FM preview is apt to be illegible.
A challenge with screen shots is avoiding having them re-sampled during render to PDF. I would recommend importing them at native res (typically 72 or 90 dpi), and keeping that below the threshold for whatever resampling is done in PDF print, Distill or Acrobat Optimize. If you need to scale screenshots, use integer multiples or fractions, and "nearest neighbor".
    > ... although my graphics designer is throwing an absolute fit because the images look horrible when viewing them in FM.
You can improve EPS (and PDF import) preview by using the scaling trick (up to 500%) or so. Rescale the source image up (elect rescale stroke and effects) before saving to EPS. Rescale down after import to FM. The final file size won't change materially for vector art, and won't be much different for contone raster if your rendering workflow is set to resample down to what they were to begin with. The preview will be 4x sharper, but still indexed color.
Naturally. there is a small performance penalty for using the scaling trick. Also, the previews are metadata that will survive into, and inflate the size of the PDF, unless redacted downstream (Examine Document in Acrobat Pro; later versions of PDF printing and Distill may have an option for that too).
Another preview performance killer is rotation. Anything other than importing at 0 degrees can send FM off into la-la land.
Bad network fs performance can bog you down too.

  • Issues with performance and RAM previews

Just did a major system upgrade from an iMac to a Mac Pro, and now I'm having an issue with performance...specifically with RAM previews.
When I try to do a RAM preview with audio, it grinds my entire OS to a hault (can't switch apps, or click on much of anything). It eventually clears up enough for me to stop the RAM preview.
So, I'm wondering if maybe my Memory & Multiprocessing settings might be off.
    Here are my system specs:
    Mac Pro
    2 x 2.4GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon (12 cores)
    64GB RAM
    ATI Radeon HD 5870
    AE CS6 (11.0.2.11)
AE is installed on an SSD drive and the scratch disk is an internal HDD.
Here are my AE Memory Settings:
    Here's my GPU Info:
Let me know if any other info is needed...

You are reserving far too little RAM for other software.
See this: "Performance tip: Don't starve your software of RAM."
(Also, I recommend going through all of these materials: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/543440 )
Regarding the SSD: Putting your application files on it means that applications load/boot faster. This is fine, but that benefit is just when you first start the application. If you put your cache files on it, then you get the benefit every time that something is read from or written to the cache---i.e., many times per second, for the entire time that you're working. Put your cache files on your SSD. BTW, there's no reason to not put your application files and caches on the same SSD. The reason that you split things across multiple disks is to prevent simultaneous reads and writes to and from a slow disk; the program loading from disk happens at a different time than reading and writing cache files, so there is no potential for conflict and slowdown.

  • Report preview and printing performance issues in CRXI R2

    Hello to all,
We have successfully upgraded a corporate Web reporting site from CR8 to CRXI R2 Server SP3 VS2005 Asp2. Using managed reports, and native Oracle data access, performance has greatly improved. The CRXI site  displays the first page in half the time as CR8. These are often very large reports.
The problem we are having is when you try to print, export, or just page thru a report in previewer. It takes as long to go to page 2, or to bring up the print dialog screen as it did for page 1 to display in the first place. This is drastically different from the performance on CR8. On the old site, when a report displayed, you could flip thru it like a Word document. Hardly any pause at all. Clicking on the printer icon brought up the print box immediately.
Is there a way to tell the 'CrystalReportsViewer' to load all pages before showing the first page?
If not, is anyone aware of a third party replacement for the CRV?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Joe Early

    Hello Joseph,
What you're seeing is essentially expected behavior for a CR Server (BO Enterprise) based report.  When you try to page through a report or print it you're basically rerunning the report on each button click.
To get around this behavior you can put your Report Object / InfoStore object into session and view, page, or print the session object from the viewer.
You can review [Business Objects Note 1203389|https://bcp.wdf.sap.corp/sap/sapnotes/display/0001203389] for an example with the Crystal Reports .NET SDK.  You'll want to add check for the session on post back, etc. but the code should give you an idea of how to get started.
    Sincerely,
    Dan Kelleher

  • My experience - Slow processing of previews is killing performance?

    Set up:
    24" iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8Ghz, 4Gb RAM, Radeon HD2600 with 256Mb, 1Tb 7200 Seagate Barracuda HD.
    Aperture 3.02, RAW 3.01
    OSX 10.6.3
Problem: In a project where previews are turned on, any change to a photo needs sloooow processing of the preview.
Take a Canon 5D Mark II RAW photo (25Mb or so) with some simple adjustments.
If I remove the curves adjustment (auto) I have an entry on the activity window for 90 seconds saying the photo is processing.
Adding a curves adjustment takes 100 seconds of processing before I even make a change.
If I then hit the Auto button it takes 120 seconds of processing.
    Very recently I have
    1) used all three of the cmd-alt options to rebuild/repair the library
    2) Cleared all caches and deleted the aperture plist and a RAW plist file mentioned in another thread
    3) Copied the library to another disk and back to de-fragment it
So I hope there are no problems with my library.
If I try the above actions after turning off previews the processing is down to 4 to 6 seconds for a photo.
Is anyone else seeing this massive slowdown with previews?
Is anyone seeing fast performance with previews on large photos?
I usually work with previews off and build them at the end of my workflow, but I'd like to know if I have a problem with my library / install.

Hi...I have the exact same machine as you except for the external drive. Also, I shoot RAW with a Nikon D300 (+/- 12 MB file). I'm far to be seeing the same performance as you. Processing is much faster, I would say about 2 sec for a photo. The only thing I would do if you haven't done it already is to set preview size to no larger than your screen resolution (for the 24'' iMac is "Fit within 1920 X 1920" )with a quality no higher than 6.

  • After Effects CS5.5 - Very Serious Performance Issues w/RAM Preview

My system: Windows 7 Professional, two Intel Xeon X5650's, 12GB RAM, and a NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800.
Problem: RAM Preview in CS5.5 gives me less than 2 fps (yes---two frames per second). This is even with the most simple of compositions. I created a 1080p 23.976 project with two simple solid layers and keyframed position and scale values for one of them with no other effects on either solid. RAM Preview gives me 1.8 fps.
I still have AE CS5 installed and it gives me solid, predictable results with RAM Preview. When I create a similar test project inside CS5, it creates the RAM preview almost instantly and displays in proper realtime (23.976 fps).
My settings for both CS5 and CS5.5 are similar  (and I have tried many variations in my attempt to fix this problem).
    PREVIEWS
Fast Previews: Adaptive Resolution Limit 1/4
Enabled OpenGL and both sub-options for OpenGL enabled.
    MEMORY & MULTIPROCESSING
RAM reserved for other apps: 4GB
I have tried various settings for Multiprocessing, all of which results in the same less-than-2 fps RAM Previews. Currently I have MP'ing enabled with 1.5GB allocation per background CPU and the actual CPU's used is 4. Again, no matter what I set it to, I get the same performance issue.
On my screen magnification ratio setting, I am using 25% and my Resolution/Down Sample is set to quarter. On my preview tab, I have tried setting my resolution from the default of "Auto" to "Quarter" with no difference.
In summary: On the same machine, AE CS5.5 RAM Preview offers terrible performance; CS5 RAM Preview offers great performance.

Under AJA Preview there are check boxes, one for "Video" and the other for "Preview." I've checked and unchecked them both and I'm still getting poor RAM previews. No matter what I have toggled, I seem to get between 1 and 2 fps for my RAM Previews.
I am not currently using the AJA card for anything. I will consider uninstalling it if this might possibly solve my problem. It's just a hassle to install and uninstall cards on a per need basis.
If there are any other thoughts, I'd love to hear them. At this point, I'd do just about anything to have realtime previews back.
