1.2.1 Firmware Causing Lockups

I had the crash during podcasts issue with 1.2, and I haven't tested if 1.2.1 fixed it... Because now it can't make it through 1 song without the screen and scroll wheel locking up completely! It continues playing whatever song it is on, then stops playing, and none of the buttons seem to work and the screen is completely frozen! The only action it seems to take is a restart (Menu+Center Button) when it locks up.
Anyone else seen issues like this with the 1.2.1 firmware upgrade?
I did a complete "Restore" also, and it's still locking up.
Is there any way to down-grade to the older firmware, my 60G iPod will only play one song now!!! Everything was working fine up until iTunes pushed this iPod firmware upgrade on me yesterday.

I have been able to "downgrade" my 1.2.1 firmware to 1.2, which does NOT list playlists with no content on my Pod. Keep in mind that we're talking about a "5.5G, video" model Pod). Here are some hints about doing it:

I have "heard" that there can be "iPod_13.1.2.ipsw" files for the 1.2 update.
There are 2 tricks: first make sure ONLY the 1.2 files are in there. Second, you MUST disconnect from the Internet. There are many ways to do that, what I did was use System Prefs to turn TCP OFF, than log out and back in with the shift key held down. You will have to do a "restore" and go through the process of re-loading all content, but after dealing with some messages about a later update being available, you will end up back at 1.2.
However, another big barrier is whether you HAVE the right files to revert. Obviously, Apple won't provide older versions. The only real reason I HAD the 1.2 files was because I did try a full restore (the first day I had the Pod) to maybe correct another annoying bug; if I hadn't done that I would have had to search "other" sources for the files.
I haven't tried it yet. When I do, I'll try to post an update.

Hi folks, I get the feeling this may be exclusive to my trouble-prone iPod, but has anyone else found this?
I've been running relatively stably on 1.0.2/1.0.3 for a few months, and took the 1.1 upgrade a few weeks ago. It ran ok for a bit, then froze up on a video podcast. I reset, and then any selection (any press of the centre button) I made caused an immediate reset. I restored to 1.0.2, as I still had a copy of that kicking around, and it was ok.
Yesterday, I saw that 1.1.1 had been released, so put this on, thinking they'd have ironed out the immediate problems. Same thing happened again, so I'm back to trusty 1.0.2, and am staying there for the foreseeable!!
Keen to hear if anyone else has seen this one.

N97 v22.2.110 firmware causing random "rainbow" re...

My N97 (RM-507) was running so well until this latest OTA firmware update.
Now I keep getting random "rainbow" LED pattern reboots occuring at the rate of about 1-2 per day.
I'm afraid that I'm going to have to "wipe" the phone memory (hard reset) and reinstall all my programs over again (for about the 10th time!).

Hi, I can only partly agree with this advice, I would hard reset the phone, as it helps, but DON@T BACK UP EVERYTHING, just contacts, calendar and notes. Backing up your settings etc can cause the problem to continue, the current settings are for v21 they may be incompatible with v2.2 so the reset is pointless if your going to restore the phone AND the problem !!
Hard work, but worth the effort of the reset.

JRE 1.5.0_11-b03 causes lockups, due to "activate control fix" ?

We have a web application consisting of a varying number of Java applets. We are using a separate JavaScript file to load the applet into the HTML code, as a workaround for the "Click to activate control" issue. This seems to be causing problems:
With the upgrade to JRE 1.5.0_11-b03, we began to recieve this error message:
java.lang.NullPointerException
at sun.plugin.AppletViewer.loadJarFiles(Unknown Source)
at sun.applet.AppletPanel.runLoader(Unknown Source)
at sun.applet.AppletPanel.run(Unknown Source)
at java.lang.Thread.run(Unknown Source)
This message will appear in about 1 out of 3 reloads of a given applet, and applet loading appears to be very slow. The applet will then run as normal, most of the times. But once in a while, maybe 1 out of 20-50 times, the JRE locks up and IE has to be shut down using Task Manager.
The behaviour has been reproduced on all computers we have tested which have 1.5.0_11-b03 installed (more than 5 computers with different hardware and operating systems), and with two different applets (both use JavaScript to communicate with the user interface)
When we remove the "Click to activate control" javascript workaround, everything seems to be running as normal, but we really don't want our customers to be forced to click to activate each of the maybe 5-10 applets that can be in a single web page.
Error and lockup reproduced on five computers having:
Hardware: Misc. computers, both laptops and desktop computers.
IE 7.0.5730.11
Java 1.5.0_11-b03
Using the previous Java 1.5.0_10-b03, everything ran smooth with no errors or lockups, even with the "Click to activate control" workaround enabled. (also IE 7-0-5730.11)
This is becoming a real problem for us, as our customers are upgrading to the latest Java version and our application might hang randomly.

I'm having the exact same problem!
I've uninstalled JRE 1.5.0_11-b03 and I'm currently running 1.5.0_10-b03, which seems to work okay. But the problem is off course that our customers are upgrading to the latest JRE, which will cause the applet to randomly crash and the whole IE freezes up. Unfortunately, apart from the �uninstall-fix�, we haven�t been able to find any work-around for this issue�
Would be great if anyone could verify that this is a �known bug�, or at least give us a hint that more developers are struggling with this strange behavior.

G5 outdated firmware cause app's to crash?

I recently reinstalled the 10.5.8 and all the updates because I was getting a lot of instability in the computer. Certain programs like Roxio Toast where crashing or getting error messages. Intially reinstalling the OS, the updates and certain software helped but the issues started up again especially with the Roxio toast. I haven't replaced the DVD drive yet....... To get to the point is there a remote possibility that the outdated firmware could contribute to the on going instability and crashes of my computer. The other things that come to mind that could POSSIBLY cause my problems are: bad memory, Hard drive issues, logicboard....I could go on but I won't. The following steps where taken to correct the crashes and other stability issues:
-Ran Disk warrior to rebuild the system directory and to correct permissions
-Rebuilt the systems cache, spotlight list, and file associations
-Deleted the Plist and .com files that are associated with software
-Ran an anti virus
-Reinstalled the OS
Does anyone have any Ideas?

Express34 eSata card causing lockups

I have a 2.53 MBP and an eSata express34 card that when I insert the card it will sometimes cause the system to lockup as in the message comes up on the screen telling to restart the computer. Is there a known problem with Express34 cards?

Problems when updating to 3.1.2 firmware causes it to stick in reovery mode

Hi,
I have been trying to update my 3G phone from 3.0.1 to to 3.1.2, each time I do this it hangs right at the end of the update and gives and error code of 1002. The result being the phone is stuck in recovery mode loop. The only way to bring the phone back to life if I restore with the previous fimware. I have taken this handset to see a Mac genius twice and both times I have been fobbed off by them saying the phone is damaged and they need would replace at cost which of course if complete nonsense as it works fine in 3.0.1. BTW The guys working on the phones section at the Apple stores at manchester and London store I have found to be pretty useless an unknowledgeable. They did not know how to even get the phone working again and did not suggest restoring back to a previous firmware. Anways I digress, if anyone has a solution to upgrade please let me know, obviously i can leave it as it is, but it would be nice to have up to date.

If you ever find a solution, let me know. I've been unable to upgrade to anything beyond 3.0.1 myself. I've tried each new firmware release, and I get stuck in the recovery mode loop as well until I manually downgrade back to 3.0 or 3.0.1. It's starting to get annoying now as some app updates that I've bought are requiring 3.1.2 and I can't frigging update to it!

Mail preferences cause lockup

I have a new Mac Pro (2 x 2.4 GHz Quad Xeon) with 24GB RAM and a 512 SSD, and have been having problems ever since getting it.
Current Problem:
If I try to view Preferences in Mail.app, I get the beachball of death. Force quit is the only solution at that point. The mail functions work fine, but I cannot change any settings, add or update any accounts, modify rules or any of it.
I've done the permissions repair, disk repair, PRAM reset, and LIbrary stuff of removing preferences and mail folders. This has not solved the inability to access mail preferences, though.
Background:
This is the second SSD after having hte first one replaced. Why? Because of cascading app crashes, and Lion would not reinstall. The Genius Bar restored my account on the new disk using a Time Machine backup from another disk on the machine. All seemed good for a while.
A second visit to the Genius Bar was to try to fix more crashes. Now there were secret permissions problems (that seem to override the normal chmod permissions on files and folders) preventing apps from starting up properly. It stumped him, and he was looking up arcane system-level commands to try to clean these issues up. The Genius spend 2 hours creating new users, migrating apps over, etc. I left with things seemingly fixed.
Also I have the same problem with Safari preferences when trying to set default browser. That gives me the beachball of death, too and the only solutio is to force-quit Safari.
Perhaps related: iCal randomly crashes. No spinner, just suddenly it's gone and a crash report is in its place.
Question:
Is there any way I can totally reset Mail.app to at least test if there's a permissions problem causing this? Or must I resort to wiping the SSD and reinstalling Lion from a DVD?

First, restore your Mail data. That's apparently not where the problem lies.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
Boot in safe mode and log in as yourself. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all, possibly including wireless networking.
Launch Mail, and test again. Same problem now?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)

New N70 firmware cause my phone restart randomly

I just updated the firmware on my N70 from version v 2.0xxx to the latest v 5.0616.2.0.3. However, I found a problem is my phone will restart itself randomly, usually every 20-30 minutes. This happens even i did not touch anything on the phone.
It seems the firmware date is 24-04-2006.
My phone model is RM-84

I have issues with the sound on my vision:m. I have contacted CS-but no joy. I think it was better before I installed the new firmware. I have the old version saved on my PC- I tried to reload this but it gave me a warning and said it may corrupt my files. The sound problem is that I was v. happy with my vision:m to start with I have had it since January.
Over the last week or so I have had a popping sound which makes it unbearable to listen to it occurs randomly and if I skip to another track and back again it is fine.
There is already quite a long thread on this as others are also having problems. I have upgraded the firmware and was hoping that if I "downgraded" it might help!!

New N71 firmware causing errors...

I've just used the NSU to get the latest version for my N71 (version 0526655). Previously I'd been using the side button for voice commands (the default is push to talk). However after the upgrade whenever I use the button in voice command mode I get this;

I have to restart the phone start the apps again. I also used to be able to tap the answer call button on my headset (HS-23) when using the FM radio to switch between preset channels. That's stopped working too.

I wouldn't upgrade just yet. I was having some niggly issues with my n71 but nothing that I couldn't live with.
Just upgraded and now I've got a big problem I'd swapped the side button to voice commands (default is Push To Talk). It did work fine, after the update it causes numerous crashes of application (including the phone app) which means I have to restart the phone

Firmware causes backlight to stay lit?

Just updated to the 1.2.1 firmware from 1.0 and my backlight does not shut off when plugged into my laptop. Is anyone else having this problem or should I just go back to 1.0 haha?
The reason I've been running 1.0 up till now is because 1.1 was a joke and f'ed up my iPod, so i downgraded and it's worked fine since(until now).

This question is not answered as far as I'm concerned. Having the backlight stay on while plugged into my Macs is unacceptable. I do not want the life of the display shortened because it stays lit for the hours I take charging it.
The iPod only stays lit when connected to my iMac and Powerbook. I bought a wall charger and when I plug it in there, it goes out.
And no, the answer is not "just use the wall charger" because I would rather have it connected to my computer so I can work with my library any time I wish.
I love Apple but this feature is a mistake. If anyone has any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

CoreCell causing lockups on a AMD64 Via K8T800

Hi
I was getting occasional lockups in games and I have isolated the problem to CoreCell.
I do not overclock anything in my system and when I simply don't have Corecell running the PC's uptime is as long as I want it. However with CoreCell running the background Battlefield1942 will eventually lock up and hard lock the PC forcing a reboot.
Thought I should let MSI know about this issue.

yeah I have the latest verstion of CoreCell 1550 from this site, never used any other verstion.
As to the Audigy 2 I have no problems with it, I have it in the last PCI slot. I have however noticed when loading a game of Battlefield1942 that I get very subtle and low frequency disturbances in the sound while the game loads. This is however very very low and hardly audible but it's there. I had a similar problem with my P4 3GHz and Abit IC7 board and that was fixed with a driver update from Creative. Lets just cross our fingers
NOTE BIOS bug. If I have "Unusued PCI slot clock=Enabled" booting from my Highpoint RocketRaid PCI card doesn't work. The BIOS won't get passed the VIA SATA controller boot and the PC will simply sit there. However if I "Disable=Unused PCI Slot Clock" the BIOS will be able to finish it's boot sequence and load XP from the PCI addon RAID card.

IPhone's 3.1.3 firmware cause Error code 9?

Trying to update my phone to 3.1.3 last night and now is throwing error code#9 in recovery mode. Try to recover from different PCs and USB ports, still no avail.
Any ideas???

Error 9: This error occurs when the device unexpectedly drops off of the USB bus and communication stops. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB isolation troubleshooting, using a different USB dock connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software, as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3125 .

2.0 firmware causes some contacts with same last name to not be displayed

After upgrading to 2.0 it appears that only the first contact for a given last name is shown in contacts. Interestingly, if i search for that last name all of the contacts show up, so they are indeed syncing to the phone but are not able to be viewed in the regular contact list. I tried restoring the phone (imported settings from last sync after restore) and still have the same problem. Anyone else see the same thing?

I'm not aware of anyone called just "John"! Everybody I know has at least a first name and a last name... therefore that is the data I enter into Address Book and iSync works fine for me and all my Sony Ericsson phones.
If you don't provide the required data, you can't really expect iSync to work correctly.
There is a reason for this... its because most phones don't split First and Last Name into two fields like Address Book does. So, if you have a contact named just "John" with no last name, when you sync, how does iSync know whether "John" is a First or Last name?
To get around this iSync adds a '-' into the blank field, so that when syncing back it knows where to put the data.
The solution is extremely simple, just provide Address Book with a first and last name (which AFAIK everyone has).
