1.2 vindicates low-level noise removal clamor

So... the newly released Lr-1.2/ACR-4.2 proves that the claims raised in this Forum (and the ACR forum), re the low-level noise reduction issue must have been correct, as there has been a change in 1.2. Thanks Thomas! :)
I can see an improvement. The images lost that somewhat pixelated look the 1.1 output had.
At one point I agreed with Jeff that the problem was not an issue in print if the image was properly sharpened for print. But, nevertheless, my images on-screen look better now. So I look forward to doing soon some test prints (with proper sharpening) and I would not be surprised if they look even better in print. :)

Jeff,
Thanks for the note. Your mention of "... the next major upgrade may hold even more interesting changes..." is very encouraging. I am thankful and impressed with the quick fix that the ACR team (Thomas) managed to implement, without having to add controls to the user interface. It is very clear that the Camera Raw team does indeed listen to input and constructive criticism and I, for one, really do appreciate the efforts made to come up with the current compromise between the old and new algorithms.
For those who preferred the ACR v1.1 default NR processing, are you aware of what setting to use in the luminance NR slider in ACR v4.2/LR v1.2 which would be the closest match to the ACR v4.1/LR v1.1 zero setting?
With regards to (not) seeing these micro-detail / micro-smoothing issues in print, I recall that you made a point in a recent post somewhere, IIRC, of not being able to see these issues on 300-480 ppi prints on a 2880 dpi printer, and of course I agree 100% with that statement. What many of us have said though, is that when making a large print where the source file might drop down to 100-120 ppi, or that in combination with cropping, upsampling and sharpening, well that is where one could see the problems upon close examination of the final large print. In other words, where the print ppi begins to approach the ppi of an average computer monitor, that is when the issues became apparent and not, of course, on most smaller prints as you described.
In any case, seeing the improvements made by the Camera Raw team has certainly helped to reduce my anxiety levels a little... although family issues are still conspiring to keep them high. At least now I can be reasonably confident that I can continue on using that wonderful tool, "Lightroom"... :-)
Thanks again for your reasoned input and help trying to come to grips with this matter. I do hope that in my early frustrations with the last version of ACR/LR, I wasn't one of those people making unfair accusations...
Regards,
Mike Mander

  • Reducing low-level noise from phone conversation

    I'm using GarageBand to digitize a phone interview I did. There's a quiet sort of static noise on the track that I'd like to reduce while making the dialogue stand out more. Any tips?

    There really isn't any kind of "one button" solution within GB. You could try doing some web searches on "parametric EQ" or "parametric equalization" to learn how to use the parametric EQ that GB provides.
    An alternative solution would be to look at an audio editor that offers noise reduction to process the audio file either Pre or Post GB.
    http://thehangtime.com/gb/gbfaq2.html#audioeditors
    (believe both Audacity and Amadeus offer noise reduction, and Schneb says there is an Amadeus Pro now)

  • Satellite L670 19E low level background noise

    Hi
    Recently purchsed an L670, downgraded it from windows 7 to Xp and now find that there is a very low level noise being emitted through headphones which seems to be associated with hard drive background operation, can anyone suggest how i can fix it its driving me mad!
    thanks

    Hi
    Did you notice this noise coming from speakers too or just using the headphones?
    To be honest its hard to say what could cause this
    Maybe you should change some settings in sound option
    Decrease the mic and other controls for testing purposes...

  • Muvo n200, lower level voice recored and encoded, and wanna configue EQ in FM m

    I read the topic about Muvo n200 for a few day. I have a problem same as all of you. My problem is I cannot hear the voice that I recorded in my lecture room. Sounds like Ohh Uhh Umm, I cannot catch the word and the sound is low level. Firstly, I think it's from the plastic cover but after I pull it out the sound is same as before I put out. And encode function is low level noise, I should recorded in high level but the sounds is very bad.
    And I don't know why I cannot configue qualizer in FM mode. I like the the sound when I configue equalizer in Music mode, but FM mode cannot. This make me disappoint very much.
    I hope a new firmware of N200 will coming soon and it should be configue my problem that I'm bore.

    The microphone is quite short range.
    Sounds like EQ with the radio is a wishlist item. Hopefully one of the moderators will log it for you, or you can send it direct to support.

  • Background Noise Removal Levels Changed to 50%

    I've repeatedly encountered an unpleasant problem with the Background Noise Removal feature in Final Cut Pro X, both in 10.0.0 and 10.0.1.  If I turn Background Noise Removal on for a clip in the Timeline, and adjust the level to something other than the default of 50% (which creates squarium-like sound - I can't think when such a high setting would be appropriate), I eventually find that FCPX has thrown away all my levels and changed the level to 50% on all clips for which I have enabled Noise Removal.  I haven't yet figured out what action makes FCPX throw away my levels (simply quitting and starting again doesn't do it); but this has happened to me repeatedly over the course of the last three months.  Has anyone else seen this? - Dan Sallitt

    I've not been able to get satisfactory improvements to audio using the Audio Enhancements. The Hum removal always sounds like reverb is added. The Noise Reduction leaves so much to be desired.  And, I'm not sure I understand how to use the "Loudness" effectively (it's never been an effect I've used extensively in Logic or STP — there are much better ways to "master" audio and I *prefer* Multipressor [also in FCPX]).
    I use Effects > Audio > Levels > Logic > Adaptive Limiter to lower the noise floor and increase the gain for a quasi – noise reduction (there is also a "Noise Gate" effect for this -- a little trickier)  and I can notch out frequency band noises with Channel or Linear Phase EQ. But quite frankly, the very best noise reduction I've ever heard in nearly 20 years of searching is in ScreenFlow. You don't have to use it as a screen capture software, it can be used to "add in" audio/video (New Empty Document) and (phenomenal) noise reduction can be had by *just* turning on Filter: "Remove Background Noise". Any "digital artifacts" are virtually imperceptible (and that's at their default setting of 80%!!). After bringing that audio into FCPX, any "enhancements" is just flat out *for fun*.  Apple really needs to license or buy Telestream's noise reduction software. [Export options out of ScreenFlow include ProRes and AIFF/LinearPCM... among others.]
    One more thing about the Audio Effects in FCPX: YOU CAN SAVE YOUR SETTINGS AS PRESETS!!!! You can't even do that with video effects!!!!! Almost every audio effect has a Presets: menu and at the very bottom is Save Preset.
    For most categories, there are: the Final Cut effects; Logic effects; and Mac OS X effects (these are basically the same as you would find in Garageband) --- stay with the Logic effects!

  • How to disable Wifi and Network access in low level setting for security ?

    Hi
    New to here
    One of our final customer bought imac last months. OS 10.9, SN is c02*******J4i
    Since they are security printing, all the necessary ports accessing to outisdes need to be disabled in low level setting(not the ons just like turn on and off ).
    The ports including USB storage, Network and WIFI.
    I googled and found the following
    Open the /System/Library/Extensions folder.
    To remove support for USB mass storage devices, drag the following file to the Trash: IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext
    Open Terminal and enter the following command: $ sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions The touch command changes the modified date of the /System/Library/Extensions folder. When the folder has a new modified date, the Extension cache files (located in /System/Library/) are deleted and rebuilt by Mac OS X.
    Choose Finder > Secure Empty Trash to delete the file.
    Restart the system.
    I want to confirm this before sending to final user. Since I didn't have mac on hand, just wonder whether there are similar kext files for network and wifi to remove.
    Just like step 2 described.
    I would like customer to backup these files before permanently removed.
    Many thanks

  • Low Level SSL read is not working !

    Hi,
    I can readLine() from a buffered SSL socket without any problems.
    But I can't get the last line because the last line does not contain any <CR> or <LF>.
    So, when I try to do a low level read from a raw SSL socketstream, I always get "zero bytes available" even though there should be bytes to read.
    Please help.
    InputStream in2 = serversocket.getInputStream();
    while (true) {
         num = in2.available();
         if (num > 0) {
         buffer = new byte[num]; // allocates memory buffer
    in2.read(buffer,0,num);
         System.out.write(buffer,0,num);
         System.out.flush();
         try {
                   Thread.sleep(500);
              } catch (InterruptedException e) {
                             e.printStackTrace();
    What did I do wrong?

    I can readLine() from a buffered SSL socket without any problems.
    But I can't get the last line because the last line does not contain any <CR> or <LF>.So send it, or don't use readLine().
    So, when I try to do a low level read from a raw SSL socketstream, I always get "zero bytes available" even though there should be bytes to read.So don't use available(). It's not guaranteed to return anything other than zero, and in SSL it doesn't.
         num = in2.available();Pointless. Remove this line.
         if (num > 0) {
         buffer = new byte[num]; // allocates memory bufferAllocate a buffer with a fixed size, outside this loop.
    in2.read(buffer,0,num);in2.read(buffer);
         System.out.write(buffer,0,num);Correct.
         System.out.flush();Do that outside the loop.
                   Thread.sleep(500);Completely pointless and literally a waste of time.
    What did I do wrong?Almost everything. Try it with the corrections suggested.

  • HELP! Weird "Underwater" effect when reducing high and low frequency noise.

    Hi everyone.
    I am in a spot of bother with Soundtrack Pro. I hooked up a reel-to-reel player's audio line out to my PowerBook's line in. Then in Soundtrack Pro, I hit record.
    So everything works out fine, except...
    There is some hissing in the audio file which I can easily remove with the "Reduce Noise..." feature, but there is this low "rumbling" noise in the background. When I try to remove that, the entire song sounds like it was played "underwater". I tried selecting only the low noise, goin to "Process>Set Noise Print" then reducing the noise, and the underwater effect gets worse.
    I need help pronto!
    Thanks

    Hmmm...OK. The hiss is removed, and the underwater effect is elimanated, but how do I get rid of this annoying low rumbling? I tried looking under the Analysis tab and selecting "Power Line Hum" but it couldn't find anything. High Pass Filter and Linear Phase EQ either kill the whole bass frequencies or they make the song sound "Tinny".
    Any advise?
    Thanks

  • Nodes with Only One Lower-Level Node = Hide

    Hi everyone
    Have anyone present this situation:
    Iu2019ve a quey to report inventory aging. It has two hierarchies to show data. In Rows I have Major Markets and in Columns a date hierarchy to show aging Ex: from 0 to 8 months, 9+ and 13+. Of course here I have also value and volume.
    Query reports all values for all major markets fine. When I filter one major market, letu2019s say France also brings detailed figures but when I add any drill down in rows all values goes to cero (0).
    Te estrange is that if you swap drill down order with major markets or drill down by columns with the same characteristic figures come out again as usual.
    I know this sounds like a SAP note but I have not been able to find it either.
    Thanks a lot for your help, and of course points will be assignedu2026..
    Ps. Important, this happen when  option u201CNodes with Only One Lower-Level Node = Hideu201D (this is selected on purpose because there are some repeated nodes in major market hierarchy Ex. France u2013 France and if there is just one value under first node then means that only display of last one is necessary to avoid repeated values).

    Solution we found is to remove flag "Do not display leaves for inner-nodes in the query", directly on the hierarchy.
    Thanks

  • Concurrence of low level and semantic EventListener

    Hello,
    when in the following program [Cancel] is clicked right after program start, I don't mind that the low level FocusEvent is first processed. But I do wonder why
    the ActionListener is not processed at all.
    Only when [Cancel] is clicked a second time (meanwhile the caret is in the third textfield, where there is no FocusListener) the program exits.
    Removing the comment slashes in the focusLost method is a solution to this problem. However, I did not find anything concerning this topic in the documentation. Does anybody know a page where I can find a rule on which listener eats which?

    I think the process must be
    (1) Click on (above) Cancel
    (2) Current focus is moved
    (3) New focus is given
    (4) Component recieves click
    but in the code above there is
    (2.5) focus moved to Text field
    and this presumably cuts off the rest of the sequence. I'm not sure where in the depths of Swing this could be confirmed/refuted but since AbstractButton is only the reciever in this chain i'd doubt its there?
    maybe java.awt.EventDispatchThread? or some kind of FocusManager?
    the exact logic is probably distributed among lots of classes though :(
    Frankly, if this behaviour is intentional, I don't
    understand why.hm, if manually reassigning focus didn't take precedence to the user impliciting reassigning focus by clicking on components then it wouldn't have any point though (?)

  • Final Cut, Audacity & Noise Removal

    I'm working on a project in FCE. I've discovered that several of my clips have audio that was recorded directly off mics built into a miniDV camera. Because of this, the audio is lower than some of my other clips recoreded with external mics and the noise from the tape mechanism was also picked up. I would like to use Audacity's Noise Removal effect to get rid of this noise. I've set Audacity as the External Audio Editor in the System Settings. When I right-click on the audio clip I want to work on and click on Open in Editor, Audacity comes up and a window opens with the message: Importing MP3 File... This process either hangs or a file is imported with a totally incorrect format that plays nonsense. Has anyone else tried to use Audacity in this way? Is there something else I need to setup to get these two programs to play nice together. I've exported the audio manually to an AIFF file, processed it with Audacxity and it cleans out the noise quite nicely.
    Doug

    You already dsiscovered the answer yourself ... export as AIFF, edit in Audacity, import back into FCE.

  • R100 low level format utility

    Hi all, I think I got a problem with my R100 hard drive. I cannot high level format by some reasons, bad sectors I guess. So, I'm trying to find a solution and I guess the low level format could be a solution for this. But, I couldn't find a utility for low level format. So, is there any utility I can do low level format R100 Hard?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    You don't wanna low-level format anything these days! All current hard drives won't even let you. I had a problem with bad sectors and metallic noises from my drive last month and I tried to fix it with utilities like "spinrite" and a myriad of other software without success. I used spinrite to rebuild the hd. It took three(!!!) days! The drive then worked for a couple of hours before it developed new read errors. This symptom means that there are un-recoverable errors on the drive and you want to buy a new one.
    If you have warranty left, RMA it, otherwise go and buy a new drive. In Sweden the HD was incredibly expensive, about $400 (ridiculus, right!!). I had to buy this drive: http://www.sarotech.com/english/cgi/pd.cgi?cmd=view&rno=5
    for $260 and grab the hd from the casing.
    The Toshiba part# for the 40gb hd is: MK4004GAH
    Search for it. Here's one link: http://www.span.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=23_504&products_id=3149
    Also, read some more about low-level formatting and try out spinrite here: www.spinrite.com

  • Noise removal

    We have DAC  NI PCI 6221, M series DAQ with NI- DAQmx driver software and also we have SCB 68 noise
    rejected sheilded I/O connector box and the cable, We want to analyse the vocal sound signals as well the sound signals arising from machining .We are facing the following problems
     1. connecting the unidirectional microphone to the above mentioned NI card.
      2. noise reduction in the sound signals
    Kindly guide us in this regard

    Hi,
    I have some information as well as additional questions to better understand your application:
    1.  What are the voltage levels that your unidirectional microphone outputs?  If these levels are low-level, it may be necessary to have external amplification to put the signal into the working range of your DAQ device.  If the voltage levels are in a suitable working range, then a standard differential measurement should suffice.  In the case of your PCI-6221, a differential measurement on ai0 would be done by making connections to ai0 (pin 68) and ai8 (pin 34).
    2.  If you are trying to reduce the amount of noise that can be introduced into your signal, I would definitely recommend using shielded wires and making them as short as possible.  However, if you are wanting to filter out noise that has already been introduced, there are a couple of options that you have - hardware or software filtering.  We have signal conditioning products that allow you to implement hardware filters for noise such as AC line noise (60Hz).  Another method you can use for filtering is through software by applying digital filters to your acquired data.  If you are developing in LabVIEW, there are a number of VIs included that can allow you to do this.  One in particular is the Filter Express VI.

  • How to low-level format entire drive, including partition map?

    Hi everyone,
    I have an OWC-supplied, 80 GB, ATA hard drive (OWC Neptune), which originally shipped in an external, FireWire 400 case. The drive stopped working; disassembly of the case led to the discovery of a burned trace on the Oxford bridge. While the bare drive itself has no manufacturer name, its label style and model number listed on the drive clearly show it to be a Maxtor 6Y080L0, 80 GB.
    Having removed the drive and installed it into a test Power Mac G4, the physical drive is recognized by Disk Utility (albeit with no partitions, mounted or otherwise). The drive emits "normal" power and spin-up sounds, with no clicking or other sounds that might normally indicate a failed drive. However, Disk Utility is unable to actually partition the drive—when attempted, the "Creating Partition" progress bar advances to about 1/8 of the way across, then moves no further (even if many hours are allowed to pass). Console reveals nothing as to what is stopping the format.
    Moving further, I attempted to blow away the partition map with pdisk, but encountered several read errors in the partition map itself. I even went so far as to attempt to "build" a partition map, one partition at a time, based on the settings I found on an identical drive that is functioning properly. Although this seemed semi-successful, attempting to write the partition table again resulted in a couple of errors.
    pdisk: Unable to write block 8 (Input/output error)
    pdisk: Unable to write block 9 (Input/output error)
    pdisk: Unable to write block 10 (Input/output error)
    pdisk: Unable to write block 11 (Input/output error)
    While it's entirely possible that the blown component on the FireWire bridge might have also taken out the drive, I'm not a big believer in coincidence and my thought is that the trace blew during an access of the partition map, corrupting it to the point that only a low-level format of that portion of the drive can potentially salvage it. There is no data on the hard drive I am worried about losing, but I'm not one to easily say "die" and so I'd like to be able to restore this drive to functionality, if at all possible.
    So after setting the table for you here, my questions are as follows:
    1. Is there any way to low-level format an entire drive that does not have a readable partition map? In essence, effectively returning the drive to something resembling an out-of-box, unformatted state? CLI is fine, and I'm even open to trying to throw the thing in a PC box, install Yellow Dog Linux so as to have GUI access to pdisk, etc.
    2. Does anyone have any other suggestions for me regarding this matter?
    Thanks much for the time,
    MBJ

    Thanks to all for the suggestions. I'm about to give up on it, although I will try the PowerMax software recommended by Michael Black.
    And The hatter: Don't let this burn you on Neptune drives—one of my client offices has been using about 20 of them for the past couple of years now, on a daily basis, for large-scale imaging projects, and the little drives have been real champs. We're even using them to dual-boot both Intel- and PPC-based systems, and they've just been outstanding. Methinks the component failure probably cascaded down to the drive, and while yes, it *****, such things happen in any batch of components and I'd buy another Neptune today if I had the need for yet another external.
    As for Matt Broughton: S.M.A.R.T. shows no problems when the drive is connected directly to the ATA bus. But then again, I've only run into a few drives that S.M.A.R.T. has ever reliably reported on—it's still a black art, to be sure. The WikiPedia article on S.M.A.R.T. goes into more detail about its pervasive flakiness.
    For now, the drive has begun to beep about once every 2 seconds at boot. This lasts for about 30 seconds, after which the drive continues to spin but no further beeping is heard. The drive no longer shows up in Disk Utility, even as an unmounted drive/volume. So, I'll probably try it in a PC w/PowerMax just to say that I did, but beyond that, it's probably ready for disassembly as an example drive.
    80 GB—sniffle…
    Thanks again to all for your suggestions!
    Take care,
    MBJ
