1.3 GB removable disk formats to only a 1.0 GB partition?

I'm running into an odd problem. I have a Fujitsu DynaMO drive which uses 1.3 GB disks. Disks I've already formatted are recognized properly with roughly 1.2 GB of free space. However, formatting a new disk results in a 1.0 GB -- exactly! -- partition.
I verified with diskutil that the partition size created is $80000000 blocks. I haven't found a way with diskutil (yet) to convince it to generate a partition which allows me to use the full space of the disk. This is rather annoying.
Anyone else seen this? I'm using Leopard, 10.5.2, on a MacBook Pro.
And no, this is not the megabyte-vs-mebibyte issue.

I get the full capacity if I use two partitions:
% diskutil partitionDisk disk1 2 APMFormat JHFS+ "Untitled" 50% JHFS+ "Untitled 2" 50%
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: Applepartitionscheme *1.2 Gi disk1
1: Applepartitionmap 126.0 Ki disk1s1
2: Apple_HFS Untitled 591.7 Mi disk1s2
3: Apple_HFS Untitled 2 591.5 Mi disk1s3
but with one partition, it's clamped to 1 GB:
% diskutil partitionDisk disk1 1 APMFormat JHFS+ "Untitled" 100%
#: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER
0: Applepartitionscheme *1.2 Gi disk1
1: Applepartitionmap 128.0 Ki disk1s1
2: Apple_HFS Untitled 1.0 Gi disk1s3

  • IPod only connects as Removable Disk (E:) and says "Safely Remove Hardware

I recently posted about this problem and since then, I have not been able to do a thing. I have done the 5 R's, and still nothing. This is very frustrating, I just want my iPod so update again. The music and videos are still on it but some songs just totally skip, and few videos don't work correctly. Still, even in disk mode, the iPod connects as Removable Disk (E:) and pops up into the taskbar as "safely remove hardware." I've read about formatting the iPod but I really don't want to mess it up. My patience is waring thin once again.
This weekend I am looking to go to the Apple Store to see if they can see what is wrong with it and get it repaired, or just get a new one. I'll post again on what happens. Any help about my problem will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

I've been having a similar problem with ipod software not interacting with the windows system correctly. I was having to go through the "Restore" defaults process over and over (for last three days) with no success. I went to the Apple Store, Genius counter at Westfield Mall today and the tech did a reset to "Restore Defaults" with no problem from an apple machine. He also loaded 2000 songs successfully.
I bought the 60G ipod with video Thursday this week and have been fighting with it since then.
At home, I tried ipod updater with Restore Defaults and the software failed and corrupted the ipod folder index file. I've been trying to do all this through a PCMCI Dual Link card (which has the USB2 port on it) and was getting all sorts of different types of problems and errors (like the folder with the "!") and having no luck getting the windows format through the "Restore Defaults" choice. In an act of desperation I decided to try a regular USB port (I believe it's the 1.1 version, but not sure) on the computer directly and was able to get the factory setting "Restore" into the ipod (but with a slower speed of data transfer). I rebooted the computer and then brought up iTunes to do the sync of songs which took about 1.5 hours (for ~2000 songs) but worked fine. I've shut down and restarted the computer a few more times since then and iTunes still finds the ipod on the same USB port and does the sync without issue.
I believe my problem was the ADS Technology Cardbus Interface Card (which has Firewire & USB 2.0 ports) and plugs into the PCMCI slot on the side of my computer. If I don't use this card and instead use a regular USB (1.1?) port, the wide variety of problems I was having have disappeared.
My 2 cents for what it's worth.

I upgraded to Mountain Lion and now I'm having trouble with Time Machine. It appears that since the upgrade Time Machine is not recognizing the external hard drive. When I go to Time Machine and select Disk for the current HD I am left with one of two options: "cancel" or "remove Disk." I am worried that I will loss my backups.

    Is this a usb drive?
It will probably never recognise that drive ever again.. Mountain Lion has this little bug where it cannot recognise some USB drives.. I don't understand it.. but it just happened to me and a quick google shows it is not uncommon.
Your backups are not lost.. they are just not accessible.. you need to plug the drive into a computer with a better.. older OS. Find a new USB drive that Mountain Lion can actually read.. and even write to.. and copy the files across.

  • My iPod only connects to my computer as Removable Disk (E:)

A few days ago I updated my iPod G5 with itunes and everything was working perfectly and as it was finishing, it said something about not being able to update or something like that. Now, everytime I connect my iPod to my laptop, it just shows a "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the taskbar and when I look in "my computer", it shows my iPod as Removable Disk (E:). When I click on the folder, it just freezes up and says, E:/ is not accessible the file or directory is corrupted or unreadable. Can anyone help me out please?? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Does the iOS device connect to other networks? If yes that tend to indicate a problem with your network.
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
Do other devices now have this problem?
Did the iPod stay connected before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings

  • Micro zen removable disk upgraded capacity, why only 4

Just upgraded my firmware, glad to see that it now has the option to increase my removable disk capacity to a max of 4GB.But where is the 2.5GB and 3GB option? Why jump straight to 4GB?
Wouldn't it be more logical to have that as most of the time, the mp3s in the player would be GB++, having just 2GB and 4GB options leaves us with little option to store music or recordings..Hope the next firmware upgrade would have this added feature

    ...... I don't understand.
You want 2 or 3 gig, then you complain about 4 gig not being enough?
Can you plz explain what the heck you are talking about...

  • Ipod 160GB showing in Windows Vista OS as Removable Disk, not appearing in iTunes (latest version). How can I resolve?, Ipod 160GB showing in Windows Vista OS as Removable Disk, not appearing in iTunes (latest version). How can I resolve?

My Ipod 160GB when disconnected is showing without any files, but no room available. It appears in my 'Computer' screen as 'Removable Disk (though the icon is a little iPod). It does not show up in iTunes at all (I have the latest version).
When I right-click the icon on the 'Computer' screen it does run incredibly slowly. I was doing this to consider if I should try formatting it (only NTSF and exFAT formats were showing) but I wasn't certain if that would be a good idea.
    I have thus far:
    Hard Reset iPod
Verified the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver was installed correctly via Device Manager
Checked the device in 'Computer Management' > 'Disk Management - showing as a RAW file with only format option as exFAT or NTSF
Ran iPod in Diagnostic Boot Mode - IO > HardDrive > HDSMARTData* - stats revealed 'Error' (did this twice to confirm error). Reset iPod from here.
After this it actually came up in iTunes but said it needed to be restored - ran Restore iPod. Error message said 'iPod cannot be restored. Uknown error occoured (1415).
Tried Solution 1 (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1539) - Reregistering the .dll files. Was unable to complete step 11 as the iPod did not appear in iTunes.
Verified that Apple Mobile Device Manager was installed.
Restarted the Apple Mobile Device Service.
Checked for third party conflicts - couldn't find any.
Changed the drive letter and restarted the computer.
Put into disk mode - unsure what that achieves.
Downloaded the HP USB with no luck running the program. I believe that Windows Vista doesn't allow formatting drives to FAT32 at all, and even previous editions of Windows wouldn't allow formatting above 32GB so certainly no suitable for me. If I got hold of a mac computer - could I format on that? Or is there a FAT32 Formatter that works for 160GB?
So I am at a bit of a frustrated loss. If you have any suggestions or know what I should do - I am all ears or eyes as it were. I will be on standby to give you more information if required.
    Thanks,
    Ashley

Try Resetting Your iPod while it's connected to the computer.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo (or Menu & Play/Pause in older models).
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.
Also see these (if you haven't found them already):
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
iPod does not appear in iTunes or on the desktop
iPod appears in Windows Explorer but does not appear in iTunes

I can connect  to the drive in Finder so connectivity is not the issue.  I cannot find a solution to this problem.  Any suggestion welcome.

So you removed a drive from TM, which you were previously using as a TM backup, and then you tried to select it again?
And you did nothing to the drive in between?
TM will only recognise disks formatted as HFS Extended. You didn't reformat the disk?

  • How to programmatically eject a removable disk (such as a flash card)

I need to be sure that after copying files to a flash card, the card buffer is actually shuffled to allow for safe removal of the flash card (the usual 'eject' option in Windows Explorer). I understand that there is a DeviceIoControl command. Is there anyone who already developed and tested such code?

    SUMMARY
Win32 applications that run on Windows NT can programmatically eject media from drives that have hardware support for media removal. However, they must do so correctly to avoid corrupting the media. This article explains how to eject media correctly on Windows NT.
    MORE INFORMATION
Windows NT version 4.0 and later support ejecting media formatted with NTFS and FAT file systems without shutting down the machine. Windows NT 3.51 and earlier support the ejecting FAT formatted media without shutting down. However, Windows NT versions 3.51 and earlier do not support removing media formatted with NTFS while the system is running. On these versions 3.51 and earlier the system must be shut down in order to avoid corrupting data on the media.
When a volume is mounted on Windows NT, there are two categories of read and write operations: 1) data operations performed by applications, and 2) file-system structure related operations performed by Windows NT. The second category is used by Windows NT to maintain the file system itself, such as directory entries of files (for example, file times, sizes, names, etc.).
Win32 applications can use either cached or uncached access to files. Windows NT, on the other hand, caches some write operations to file-system data structures to implement a "lazy-writer" scheme. This allows Windows NT to defer some writes to disk until they are absolutely required. This way, only the latest changes need to be written to disk if the file system data is updated often.
Because Windows NT uses a lazy writer system to update file system data structures on media, the media will be corrupted if the media is ejected while the system is updating this information. To avoid this problem, Win32 applications must take the following steps to correctly eject removable media and prevent possible data corruption:
Call CreateFile with GENERIC_READ|GENERIC_WRITE, FILE_SHARE_READ|FILE_SHARE_WRITE, and OPEN_EXISTING. The lpFileName parameter should be \\.\X: (where X is the real drive letter). All other parameters can be zero.
Lock the volume by issuing the FSCTL_LOCK_VOLUME IOCTL via DeviceIoControl. If any other application or the system is using the volume, this IOCTL fails. Once this function returns successfully, the application is guaranteed that the volume is not used by anything else in the system.
Dismount the volume by issuing the FSCTL_DISMOUNT_VOLUME IOCTL. This causes the file system to remove all knowledge of the volume and to discard any internal information that it keeps regarding the volume.
Make sure the media can be removed by issuing the IOCTL_STORAGE_MEDIA_REMOVAL IOCTL. Set the PreventMediaRemoval member of the PREVENT_MEDIA_REMOVAL structure to FALSE before calling this IOCTL. This stops the device from preventing the removal of the media.
Eject the media with the IOCTL_STORAGE_EJECT_MEDIA IOCTL. If the device doesn't allow automatic ejection, then IOCTL_STORAGE_EJECT_MEDIA can be skipped and the user can be instructed to remove the media.
Close the volume handle obtained in the first step or issue the FSCTL_UNLOCK_VOLUME IOCTL. This allows the drive to be used by other processes.
The following code demonstrates how to accomplish safe ejection using the steps described above:
    #include
    #include
    #include
    #include
    // Prototypes
    BOOL EjectVolume(TCHAR cDriveLetter);

The message means that your internal hard has been damaged. This message always comes up when the file system is corrupted. I suggest to remove it, connect the hard drive into a different computer as an external drive (use usb caddy), perform a backup if possible and the format the hard drive and restore the factory settings. I'm afraid that you have to reformat the hard drive, a checkdisk scan won't help..
The error message means that the Boot Sector is corrupt or has been damaged. It does not mean that the hard disk is damaged.
This is a fixable issue. There are a few command line tools that can be used.
You will  need to make an appropriate version (32-bit / 64-bit) of the Windows 7 repair disc from a working Windows 7 installation. You will need either a USB or CD to create your rapair CD/USB. Follow the instructions on this video to create the repair installation of your choice..You will will be using the manual boot sector repair that is described in this video to repair your Windows 7 Boot sector.  Use the Windows 7 repair disc or repair USB thumb drive that you created earlier to accomplish the repair.

  • IPod nano being read by Windows as "Removable Disk"

I have a 4gb nano, current firmware 1.1.1. Now, I've updated it before to the music on iTunes (back when it was on 1.0), but then one day, the iPod suddenly showed the exclamation/folder icon. So I restored the iPod with firmware 1.1 (it recommended I update, so I did), but my computer couldn't recognize the iPod. It kept showing a little baloon (I'm using XP) saying that the device could not be written to (only when I unplugged it, however). So, I thought that maybe it was just trying to write to it very slowly, but after leaving it there for a day, supposedly "writing" to the iPod, there were no results. I updated to 1.1.1, thinking that maybe 1.1 had a bug that caused this, but then I was confronted with the problem of nothing recognizing it at all. Windows now shows the iPod as a "Removable Disk", and when I double click it, it shows the loading mouse for about a minute; until it says
    "E:\ is not accessible.
The Files or directory is corrupted and unreadable."
NOTE: I have NEVER used any third party software like linux or "hacked" my iPod.
So, after looking around, I followed the method here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
Because I could see the device in My Computer but couldn't open it, and iTunes didn't recognize it.
However, it was not a success, so I tried the method here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301343
But that also didn't work. I am now at a loss for explanation, can anyone help me? This is my mother's iPod, and she's leaving on a business trip in two days; I'd like to get her music back on it so she can use the iPod on the plane. Any ideas?

It wasn't being recognized by anything... including the updater. But after searching through other threads, I found that other people have had this problem as well; it seems the firmware is the prime target for the scre-up. Thanks, Benoa, for the steps! Although you've probably heard it enough times already.

  • 2nd gen shuffle disk format FAT32 on a mac?

    Guys,
my incredibly stable quad g5 has gone "nuts" since I've had my 2nd gen shuffle. It hangs, won't mount external USB drives if the 2nd gen shuffle is docked during startup, lots of other really weird things.
The shuffle was delivered to my work, so the shuttle was 1st connected to a Windows box, but just to charge it fully.
when the shuffle is connected to the quad, it only actually shows in iTunes about 25% of the time... whether or not it shows up in iTunes, I can see an "iPod" on the USB bus. I've got lots of USB 2.0 powered ports... changing ports doesn't make a difference at all.
according to iTunes, the software version is 1.01, which was updated from the shipping 1.00 while connected to the Windows machine. (this might have been a bad thing to do)
when the shuffle is connected to iTunes, despite the fact that the checkbox allow disk access, most of the time I still see the shuttle mounted as a drive volume. When it doesn't show up, I can still see the drive briefly mount and unmount if I toggle settings or do anything with the shuttle.
obviously, I've tried restore(s) from the quad, which resets the contents of the shuttle but doesn't change the disk format.
the shuttle itself operates as expected, it's only while it's docked to the quad that all heck breaks loose...
    Any ideas???
    Thanks

ah... well, I've already restored one of the times that it was connected to a proper 2.0 powered USB port.
the first time, it wouldn't come back from the reflashed state, ie it didn't reconnect to iTunes...
I disconnected, it had no songs on it, but it seemed to work... after a number of attempts to dock, it finally did, and I pumped a bunch of song over to it and it worked...
I then retried that sequence and the update worked fine.
it's still a strange beast. for example... although no disk access is allowed, it still mounts a shuffle icon onto the desktop, just no folders are visible... strange...
I've chosen to downsample to 128kbit AAC, and I'm not having iTunes autofill the shuffle. I unselected the downsample option and clicked apply. one would think that the data on the shuffle would stay as is. Nope, it wiped the shuffle and tried to put the songs that were there back on the shuffle at the original bitrates, which of course don't fit. Reselect the downsample option, click apply, and it repeats the wipe of the shuffle, and is now (again) downsampling and sending to the shuffle. Since it's on the keyboard USB port right now, this is taking quite a while.
I'll def try on other machines, and indeed without the USB drives mounted, ah, sorry, can't really do that on the quad... the iTunes library is on one of the external USB drives...
anyway, I get what you want me to try... it might be tomorrow before I can repeat the sequence enough times to say something conclusive. This has been going on for a few days already... I've restarted the quad more times since Thursday than I have in the last year!
I'm not panicking yet, but am extremely curious what is causing this problem.
Once again, thanks... I try some more tests and post back
    Michael

  • Disk format GPT and Apple Partition Map  Upgrade questions

I was told that switching to the new computer with snow leopard that I would need to reformat my drives from my G5 to GPT (GUID Partition Table) from Apple Partition Map (APM) to get time machine to work (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2706634&tstart=0)
