1.4.6 system crash with mathematica

If have installed the new security update on my MacBook Pro. I have not ahd any boot problems like the ones many have had.
I have been using Mathematica 4.1, for ppc, for a logn time and it has been working well on the new Macbook too.
After the security update I can start the Mathematica frontend, and I can run the kernel in command line version in the terminal. However when I try to do a calcualtion using the frontend, as one normally do, it tires to start the kernel and then the whole system freezes. I can move the mouse but nothing else works and I have to reboot the machine. It happens exaclty the same way every time I try it.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I'm having the same problem (but with Mathematica 4.2). It really is a disturbing bug: though the system responds to pings one cannot even enter via the back door (ssh) to see what's wrong.
There is now a page on the Mathematica website (http://support.wolfram.com/mathematica/systems/macintosh/conflicts/42onintelmac. html) that confirms that it results from an issue with Security Update 2006-003 (Intel).
It also claims that Apple has released a new security update that solves the problem, but Software Update doesn't signal anything new...
Has anyone more information about this reported solution?

  • Webcam Live Pro causes system crash with Windows XP Home

Ever since installing Webcam Live Pro I have been having random system restarts. This ONLY happens when the webcam is being used. It happens when using the Creative Webcam Center or another application. Sometimes the restart will happen after a few minutes, and other times an hour or more. I am running Windows XP sp2 with all patches, and there are no driver conflicts listed in Device Manager. I have the cam set at 60 hz.
Even though there are no listed driver conflicts in Device Manager, there clearly is a driver conflict that occurs from time to time. I have read of other people having this same problem on this forum with Webcam Live Pro. I am using the driver ...0 which is dated 0//2004, and the automatic update program on this web site says that I am using the latest driver. But in the download section of this web site, the latest driver is listed as .0.0.0 and dated November 9, 2004. The driver numbers or dates do not match, and the driver on the web seems to have an earlier number but a later date!?
Does anyone (especially a Creative tech support person who may be reading this post) have any idea what to do? The driver version is one issue. But the big issue is the system crashes.

Solution! I discovered the problem causing the system crash, and I think it is sufficiently interesting to note here so that others may benefit from what I discovered. First, there is no fundamental problem/conflict with the driver for Webcam Live Pro. The trouble in my instance is that I was running another program that utilized the web cam, and that program conflicted with the Webcam Live Pro program that was constantly running in the system tray. Basically, the program in the system tray is loaded with the set-up for Webcam Live Pro. It constantly monitors the computer system to see if the cam is connected to the computer. When it does this while another program is using the cam, the conflict occurs, causing the entire computer to reboot. The solution is to right mouse click the icon for Webcam Live Pro in the system tray, go to settings, and to remove the check that allows the program to check for the presence of the web cam. Just to be safe, I then also exited the Webcam Live Pro program from the system tray so that nothing from that program could interfere with my use of the webcam using another program.
The result is that the webcam is rock solid, with no system crashes. I have been running it nonstop for hours without a problem.
I hope this helps someone else.

    CB

  • Entire System Crashes With iTunes

I've acer with Windows 7 and entire system crashes while i use ITunes. Had latest update, but to be sure went back to download 64 bit. Still crashed so uninstalled in case other version partially installed and then re-installed 64 bit. Still crashes.

    Sorry 'bout the delay, Eva.
Since the last time we spoke, iTunes 10.1.0.56 was released. The primary bug fix was for the CoreAudioToolbox.dll related "iTunes has stopped working" messages, but I figure it's probably worth a check with your bsod too.
I don't know if it shows up for people in their Apple Software Update (It didn't for me yesterday when I checked). So get it from the installer available from:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    Any impact on the problem?

  • Flash player causes entire system crash with black screen

When watching a video on youtube, streaming on twitch or other things my entire system will crash with the following symptoms:
    -Black Screen
    -Intermittent stuttering sound
-Only fixable by a hard reboot (holding the power button). The reset button will NOT work. Video will NOT return, it will continue to loop this way until a hard reset.
    Your Flash Version
    11.9.900
    Your browser name
    Firefox
    Your Operating System (OS)
    Windows (Windows 7)
That information taken directly from Adobe's site. Using 64-bit, 8GB of RAM installed. ATI Radeon HD 6850 card. I have done a fresh Win 7 install a couple months ago and JUST NOW put flash back on here...now it's crashing. While times vary before the crash, I just watched a youtube video for less than 5 seconds before it happened.
Upon reboot, I get the "Windows was not shut down properly" message. No "Your system has recovered..." message, however. I've seen very few posts about this and none of the solutions help but this is REALLY pissing me off now. It happened to me before and the only fix was a fresh system install. I'm not doing that again.

    Hi Mike,
I appreciate the reply. I can run the system for days, literally, doing other tasks such as music through iTunes, gaming through Steam, voice chatting on Ventrilo. The only time I will ever experience this issue will be the five minutes I watch a youtube video or watch a stream on Twitch..
My primary HD is a relatively new Intel SSD. I do have multiple other drives but they're used for storage of media (include aforementioned music).
I have been a youtuber and streamer for a while, and i'd like to try and record the phenominon, but i'll have to do so using an external camera since i'm not sure I can stop and save the recorded data. I'll have to do so I guess so I can give a better idea of the issue occuring.
    Thanks again.

  • System crash with KT6 Delta

    Hi,
I am new around here, so excuse the noobness
Anyway, i hope you guys can help me out here a bit.
    So here goes :
I just purchased a  MSI KT6 Delta mobo to replace my old SYK7V Dragon Plus mobo which died on me 2 days ago. Initial installation was ok, with these device installed :
    1) AMD Athlon XP 2000+
    2) Winfast Geforce 4 Ti 4200 64MB
    3) Creative Audigy Soundcard
    4) 2 HDD, C: (120GB, Partition to 2 10GB and 100GB) E: (40GB)
    5) 2 x 256MB PC2100 (Crucial RAM)
    6) Logitech USB Optical Mouse
    7) Aztech ADSL Modem (906EU)
The above configuration work flawlessly with all memory timing, AGP option turn to the max.
The problem arise when i added a new NIC from 3Com, the model of the NIC is 3C905C-TX-M, a 10/100Base-T card. The problem i am now facing is intermitten crash, the PC will just freeze in the middle of an operation, if it is in Windows, the mouse will stop moving. If it is in a game, the sound will skip and repeat a few tone, the screen will freeze also.
I have already updated the following drivers for these device :
    1) VIA Inf driver, the latest downloadble from http://www.viaarena.com
    2) Geforce driver, latest downloadble from nvidia.com
    3) Audigy driver, latest downloadble from crative website.
    4) 3Com Nic driver, latest downloadble from 3Com website.
I suspect it could be my Soundcard crashing with the nic somehow, as it i happen to see some skipping sound after i installed the nic. I have tried changing the PCI latency from 36 up to 128, still no help. I tried moving my soundcard to different PCI slot, and still the problem persist. Do any of you guys have this sort of problem? Any idea at all?

Mind elaborating a bit? I am not very well versed in PSU terminology. All those are just number to me. They know me, but alas i don't know them. All i know is a bigger PSU would almost always means a better PSU. I am planning to get either a Ati 9600XT or a 9800 Pro/XT in about 2-3 months time. If it is indeed that i need a newer PSU, perhaps you can tell me what to look out for, since i may as well be buying a new PSU.
Also... the PC seems to be running in a stable condition. No more hanging or crashes. I have also changed some setting in AGP, so as to speed up some game play, and still no crashes. Changed setting on BIOS for AGP is :
    AGP mode : 4x
AGP aperture : 256MB (I usually set em at half my system ram)
    Fast Write : Enabled
    AGP Master 1 W/S Write : Enabled
    AGP Master 1 W/S Read : Enabled
    AGP Read Synch : Enabled
Gaming performance has been increase noticably, no more jerkiness.
Also, i have found out that my NIC has a shared IRQ with my OHCI compliant 1394 IEEE Host Controller, so i disabled that. I am not using it anyway, no loss there.
I will be trying memory tweaking tomorrow and let you guys know if there any crashes. Memory timing now in BIOS is still relatively conservative. I'll let it run for a day and see if there any problem before i mess with the memory timings.
Thanks to the kind people who help me. Appreciate all the help from you all.

I can't provide you guys with anything, it's been with this guy for over a month. I've been running with 6GB for the past 2 years with no problems until I dusted out the inside of the case. Obviously it aggravated the problem I had two years ago.
i agree, maybe that wasn't the solution. it was after all 2 years ago and my memory was fuzzy. After a month and a half with this guy I got my comp back today. He reinstalled windows 7 and updated the BIOS. That helped out a lot, but it still froze twice, and reset it's self once with 6GB RAM in it. I took the 3rd RAM stick out, givign me 4GB, and noticed that my graphics drivers weren't updated yet, so maybe that was the reason for the crashes? I'm not so sure about that either though, because after I updated the GPU drivers it froze not too long after that. Maybe I needed to reboot for the drivers to take full effect? it didn't prompt me to restart, so I'm a little uncertain there.
I was thinking of trying it with 6GB RAM again, now that my graphics drivers are up to speed and the system has been rebooted.

  • System crashing with 6GB RAM, fine with 4GB

    intel i7 920
    6GB RAM
windows 7 home premium 64 bit
    MSI x58 platinum motherboard
    nvidia GTX 260 graphics
    750w power supply
got my system being fixed by a professional, but we're stuck right now trying to find a solution to my problem. The system is fine with 4GB in any slot, but when the third stick is put in, the system crashes.
I'll go into some more detail of my troubles, this should help in the solution.
system was built out of Fry's Electronics 2 years ago. From the moment that I took it home I was having this problem. I thought it might be a faulty RAM stick at the time, so I had them replaced, but to no avail. The soluton if I remember was to reformat. Everything was fine for 2 years.
last month I opened up the system and cleaned the dust out of the inside. I removed the RAM and the CPU fan. Hooked everything back up and the system starts crashing and rebooting like crazy, and there's the problem again. It would crash while it's booting up, while it's sitting at the desk top, while I'm on the internet, any time it wanted to crash, it would do so. Not only that, but my BIOS and graphics drivers were suddenly out of date for some reason. I keep my drivers up to date, so this was weird to me.
I'll forward the ideas that you guys come up with to my guy, thanks ahead for your assistance.

  • SYSTEM CRASH with 'Save As PDF' in Safari

Since installing 10.6.4 my MacBook crashes whenever I attempt to "Save as PDF" in Safari. I am unable to force quit Safari or use any other application as the spinning beachball of death works its magic. I removed Safari 5 and replaced it with Safari 4.05 (using Time Machine) but this has no effect. All I can do is a hard reset to get my MacBook back from the abyss. I've just tried 'Save As PDF' from a Pages document and this worked fine.
    Any ideas?

First thing I would do if I were you is find your Snow Leopard installer DVD, boot from it, and when you get to the point where there is a menubar across the top of your screen, go into Utilities and run Disk Utility's Repair Volume option. If errors, run it over and over until no more "file system was modified" messages are reported. Then run the Repair Permissions option. That one reports errors that never go away so don't worry so much about them. Then reboot, and google "10.6.4 combo update." Download the combo update and reapply it.
No Sno installer DVD? Then boot while holding down the ⌘s keys. When you get to a user prompt, type fsck -fy and run it over and over until you get no more "file system was modified" messages. Then type exit so the computer reboots. You can continue with the repair permissions and combo update bit after the computer has rebooted into GUI mode.

  • Windows 7 full-system crash with Flash 10 audio

I upgraded from xp home to 7 pro, and now find the computer crashing (freezing) in Windows 7, either Firefox or IE8, when using Flash to play audio. Video is OK (with hardware acceleration turned off).  All audio enhancements are turned off.  Granted, this is an old computer, but the same version of Flash in the same versions of Firefox and IE work fine on the same hardware in XP.
Problem OS is Windows 7 Pro, up to date on patches including drivers, 32-bit
    Firefox 4.0.1 or IE 8
    Flash WIN 10,3,181,14
    Hardware summary:
    Pentium D 945
    2G RAM
2 500G hard drives (one PATA with the old XP system; one SATA with Windows 7 clean install upgrade; dual-boot as installed by Windows 7)
    Visiontek ATI X1300 video
    Motherboard Realtek audio
Bottom-fisher DSL (1.5 down) Internet connection
The freeze is guaranteed when listening to Pipedreams audio (for instance: http://pipedreams.publicradio.org/www_publicradio/tools/media_player/popup.php?name=pipedr eams/2011/05/16_pipedreams_128&starttime=00:00:00&endtime=00:59:07). If other network activity uses a lot of bandwidth (large pictures, etc.) the crash happens sooner, but even if completely left alone it will crash before a 1-hour program segment is finished.
Youtube works fine.  BBC iPlayer works fine.  Capital Public Radio web stream works fine.  All use Flash.
Sometimes (but not always) blue-screen type errors will be logged on restart (hard reset - power switch or reset button - is needed).  The most common are processor timer errors, with very occasional bus errors instead.  However, a blue screen never appears; the system just freezes.
There are a couple of similar topics from 2010, but neither that I found in the search was quite the same (involved video as well as audio), and both seemed to be helped by disabling hardware acceleration and audio enhancements -- that doesn't work for me.  Any other ideas?  Note again: this does not happen on the same hardware running XP Home (fully patched) with the same versions of Firefox, IE, and Flash.

BSOD's are never good. They point to a problem much bigger and deeper than any software issues.
When XP came out eleven years ago, people were astonished at how much processor it took to handle the GUI vs Windows 98. Processors an RAM have upgraded a lot since then. It was worse with VIsta, even on newer systems. Seven was a step in the right direction, but I'd guess that your old computer (your words, not mine) isn't up to the task of running Windows 7.

  • System crashes with linux 3.3.4-1

Running fully updated (@01/05/12) Arch with kernel linux 3.3.4-1 on an elderly Compaq Evo D500 with an Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 AGP graphics card, and running Openbox as WM and xf86-video-nouveau driver. As soon as I updated kernel, am getting complete crash soon after I start doing something memory intensive like running VirtualBox or Chromium. The first message on the screen reports: BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 00200200 [or 00100104]. There doesn't seem to be any lead up in the logs that I see.
The system becomes completely unresponsive, and no keyboard or mouse actions work. Only a hard power off works.
Maybe I should revert to the dreaded vesa driver ... or any better ideas most welcome!

  • System Crash with no CrashReporter Log

I have been having a similar problem on 3 or 4 different G4s since trying to run OS X (specifically Tiger) on these machines. The specs for the G4s are basically the same as the following:
    G4-450
    1GB RAM (2x512)
    28GB Hard Drive
OS X Tiger with all updates applied
The problem occurs at random intervals, with various programs open. Sometimes the user can work for an hour or two before locking up, sometimes they can work for 2 minutes before the lockup occurs.
The lockup is a complete lock, no mouse movement or keyboard strokes. After rebooting, I have tried looking for a crash report but nothing exists for the time of the crash.
I have tried the following solutions:
    Repair permissions
    Switching to different RAM chips
    Erasing and reloading company fonts
Reinstalling the OS using the Archive Option
Reinstalling the OS using the Reformat Option
The G4-500s and 500Duals which we use have never had this problem even with the same exact software loaded.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    G4-450   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1gb, 28gb

System freezes may be more a matter of hardware than software. Specifically connected peripherals can cause these type of freezes. The only way to test would be to disconnect all peripherals and see if it occurs and if it does, add them back one by one. Unfortunately, this is "sporadic" so this will be difficult.
You might also, look in these users System Preferences >> Accounts >> Login items and disable those to test. Also, look in /library/ startup items and drag anything in that folder to the desktop and restart.
You don't mention running Disk Utility, "Repair Disk" or fsck? If you haven't, I certainly would.
    Let us know.

  • System crashed with nothing working (question mark, os symbol etc.)

After leaving system in sleep mode overnight, came back to startup and system had crashed. Once restarting the unit makes a scratchy beeping noise approximately 3 times spaced out by 10-20 seconds. Then screen goes to flashing question mark and os symbol folder.
I have tried the following to resolve:
    1. Reboot holding down Shift key - Did not work
    2. Reboot holding down Option key - Did not work
    3. Rebooted (holding down the C button) with most recent OS X Tiger system/install cd - This caused the system to start to the Grey Apple symbol and then it went to a grey 'Do Not Enter' symbol and freezes/stops.
    4. Rebooted (holding down the C button) with Hardware Diagnostic CD - Was able to run Hardware diagnosis and found no problems. I used the Restart command in this software and system had same issues.
    5. Rebooted (holding down the C button)with Apple Care Protection CD and this caused flashing diskette with question mark.
Nothing appears to work and it appears I am on my way to Cafe' Mac (my local Apple store) for serious repairs. I can not lose the hard drive contents (pictures and everything that I do not have backed up).
Any help or advice to get my system back to normal would be greatly appreciated....
    Thanks in advance.
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Sure, use either Mac... but it all depends if your old MacBook will boot into Firewire target disk mode.
If it does just pop in the DVD (in the good DVD drive) and install. I'd suggest a reformat also, under the circumstances.
To use FireWire target disk mode
    1. Make sure that the target computer is turned off. If you are using a PowerBook or iBook as the target computer, you should also plug in its AC power adapter.
    2. Use a FireWire cable to connect the target computer to a host computer. The host computer does not need to be turned off.
    3. Start up the target computer and immediately press and hold down the T key until the FireWire icon appears. The hard disk of the target computer should become available to the host computer and will likely appear on desktop. (If the target computer is running Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you can also open System Preferences, choose Startup Disk, and click Target Disk Mode. Then restart the computer and it will start up in Target Disk Mode.)
    4. When you are finished copying files, drag the target computer's hard disk icon to the Trash or select Put Away from the File menu (Mac OS 9) or Eject from the File menu (Mac OS X).
    5. Press the target computer's power button to turn it off.
    6. Unplug the FireWire cable.
If the target computer's hard disk does not become available to the host computer, check the cable connections and restart the host computer.
