1.4GHz dual-core (Air) vs 2.4GHz dual-core (Pro)

Hi all!
Is there a way to quantify the difference in processing power between the 1.4GHz dual-core in the new 13 inch Macbook Air and the 2.4GHz dual-core in the 13 inch Macbook Pro?
How would you all explain the difference in power and capability?
Thanks for any input!

skyyame,
performance benchmarks can be used to quantify the difference in processing power, but if the benchmarks don’t closely resemble your typical tasks, then they might not be relevant for you.
If you’re trying to make a purchasing decision between two particular Macs, what would you like to do with whichever one you do purchase?

  • Mac mini intel core 2 duo 2.4ghz keeps freezing up

I have a refurbished (bought from Apple) Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz with upgraded 8GB of RAM, OS is latest Snow Leopard (10.6.8).  I have had this machine less than one year, and in the past five days it has started to freeze up quite often.
After running Disk Utility and getting a message that said to repair the disk, I hve run Disk Utility from the original disk to fix the problem.  No effect, I still have regular freezes and often.  I have run Disk Utility again several times, and have had to repair Permissions several times, though the Repair Disk says the hard drive is okay.  Only the Permissions keep getting messed up, and this happens quickly.
I have no large number of video files on the desk top.
I checked some threads and ran Activity Monitor and Control.  Control when I ran "disk0" did not show any problem.  I do not know how to interpret the Activity Monitor readings.
Short of wiping the computer and reinstalling everything, is there a way to determine what is wrong with the computer?
    Thanks for any help!

    Hello,
Only the Permissions keep getting messed up,
You can ignore repeated Permission fixes if the last line says completed in it.
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM you have for real & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • Is the core i5 the same as dual-core i5

I bought a latest generation macbook, mid 2013, last week. when I open "about this mac" on the top control bar, it says the processor is 1.3GHz Intel Core i5. But the offical website shows the processor is 1.3Ghz Dual-Core i5. My question is why my macbook air lost one. Is it a cheating?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Your MacBook Air has got a dual-core Intel Core processor, but About this Mac doesn't indicate it. You can be sure you have a dual-core Intel Core, so don't worry about this

  • 2.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 vs 2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7

I can't decide which Mac Mini should buy, Mini with 2.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 or the server version 2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, of course I'll upgrade it with 8 GB memory and SSD drive.
So what are you guys thinking of 2.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 or 2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7?
    cheers

my dilemma is if i go 2.7ghz i5 with 8gb of ram and the 750gb (7200rpd), after i buy the magic mouse and the keyboard, i'm already into $1367.00....
where as if i got a imac for $1399.00 i'm looking at a 2.5ghz i5 quad core with 8gb ram and a 500gb hard drive, with the amd graphic chip. plus i'm also getting a 21.5" led screen. where as with the mini i would have to hook it up to my existing monitor or even share it with my existing computer.
i love the look of the mini, but it is really hard for me to justify spending that much money having to buy all the "extra's", just have a working computer. when i can just pony up $32.00 more and get a whole sytem...
please help me to justify buying a mac mini.

  • Is a Pentium(R) Dual-Core processor good enough for Adobe Premiere Pro?

is a Pentium(R) Dual-Core processor good enough for Adobe Premiere Pro?  Under system requirements, Adobe listed Intel Core Duo...not sure if this is just as good?

    Hi Brian,
Good question. Keep in mind that these are minimum system requirements. I have not had a core 2 duo for some time, but I recall that the performance was not that good at that time, and this was CS5.5, or so. If you are going to use this machine, be sure to work at lower playback resolutions until you can afford a more powerful computer.
Video editors typically have more powerful systems than the minimum system requirements. Check our hardware forum for details: Hardware Forum

  • Is iMac Quad Core Good Enough for AVCHD In Premiere Pro CS4

    Hi there.
    I have a quick question....
I'm thinking about buying a new 27" iMac so that I can edit my AVCHD files in Premiere Pro CS4. I'm presently using a Macbook Pro with a Dual Core and the video playback in Premiere Pro is choppy.
I also read that Premiere Pro doesn't support AVCHD without an expensive plugin.
Does anyone know if the iMac, with the specs below, will playback AVCHD in PP smoothly?
    2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
    8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 4x2GB
    1TB Serial ATA Drive
    ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB
    Thanks,
    David

    Hello again.
I have now upgraded to an iMac, quad core i7 with 8GB of RAM. I have my AVCHD footage on a striped RAID hard drive connected via FW800 and the scratch disks on a separate 1TB hard drive that is not striped and that is connected via USB. I am using Premiere Pro CS4 to edit the footage.
When I play the video in PP, it warps on and off. It's better than when I was using my Macbook Pro dual core 4GB RAM, but it's still not playing smoothly. I have the presets set to 1080i30(60i), which is correct for this footage.
I would prefer to not have to convert the AVCHD footage, unless there is a clear advantage to doing this.I have tried converting to a P2 file, but it increases the file size from 284MB to 2.8GB.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    David
