My BT Infinity installation failed as I am 1.4km from where the cabinet has been sited.
I live about half a mile from the edge of the town
Now what?
Have I been abandoned for all eternity?
Are there any bespoke solutions?

The Fibre infrastructure and "last mile" infrastructure that BT Retail and other ISPs use for their fibre broadband services/products (exluding Cable or KCom networks) are owned, installed and maintained by Openreach.
1) What does it say in the grid when you enter your landline number into the BT Wholesale database? http://dslchecker.bt.com/adsl . Please copy and paste the "Grid" with all the available services for your line into a new post.

2) FTTC fibre broadband uses VDSL2 signals that travel from the FTTC cabinet to your property via the existing copper (sometimes aluminium) line and can currently achieve upto 80mbps. The further away you are from your FTTC cabinet the slower the fibre FTTC broadband will be.
However VDSL/2 signals used for FTTC broadband connection degrade far quicker in terms of distance than conventional ADSL broadband signal do.
Generally speaking if your landline is over 1500 meters in length from the FTTC cabinet to your property then you may not be able to get BT Infinity as you may not be able to achieve over 15mbps, though maybe able to get BT Retail's sub 15mbps FTTC fibre broadband service called BT Faster Unlimited broadband (FTTC) if your line can cope with the VDSL/2 higher frequencies.
Here is a graph that shows the ADSL(G.DMT,ADSL2 and ADSL2+) and VDSL/2 (FTTC) signal with distance. Please be aware that all ADSL connections are depend on distance from local exchange, where as FTTC (VDSL/2) connections are depend on distance from your FTTC (DSLAM) cabinet. Though all connection types are also depend on line quality.
This graph is also just a general estimation of what the speed could be achieved and not the actual speed you will receive. Also your line maybe longer than you would think as it may not go the direct way to either the cabinet.
There is a thing called FTTP on Demand (FTTPoD) where FTTC areas can request to get FTTP installed to their property if their exchange has been allows FTTPoD (though this is not supported by any ISPs at the moment), though may cost you thousands if you go down this route once ISPs take up this FTTPoD service.

BT Infinity 1 - 2.4km from cabinet

For years we have had BT Total Broadband 3 (ADSL) and after a lot of experimenting I managed to get actual download speeds of around 3.5Mbps / synching at 4096kbps (4.3km from exchange along main roads) by plugging adsl filter into the test socket and using a wireless phone instead of the extentions (I lost about 1Mbps if I plugged in the faceplate).
Two weeks ago I upgraded to BT Infinity 1which I believe is fibre to cabinet and then copper wires - an engineer came and fitted a Openreach MK3 faceplate and installed a HH5. He told me that I only had 12Mbps (estimate 2.4km from cabinet) and then left pretty sharpish. By the time I had connected my laptop this had fallen to 10Mbps - and now it is about 5.5Mbps. When I ordered I was quoted 16-20Mbps.
During the first few days our wireless devices kept disconnecting and I kept restarting the HH5 - until I read that this could be due to the dual frequency so I separated the signals and that seemed to sort it out. The speed has settled at around 5-6Mpbs which is very disappointing. I have contacted the helpsdesk several times but all they seem interested in doing is running speedtests and resetting the HH5 to factory default.
Please, does anyone know if there is anything I can do to increase the speed - or do I just have to put up with what I've got? An extra 2Mbps switching from ADSL to FTTC doesn't seem right to me!

How confident are you that you are 2.4km from your cabinet ? Bear in mind that phone lines do not always take the sortest route.
If you are 2.4km from your cabinet and have a good clean line the following table gives an estimate of 13Mbps, viz :-

I think it's dead but as my last breath i will try to find any different solution before to bury it. Sorry for my English, I am Brazilian, but I will try do my best for you understand me. Its me who needs help.
I have an iShuffle 512MB (purchase OUT2005), a mini iPod 6GB (purchase SET2005) and a PC running Windows XP SP2 (ADM Athlon XP 2600, HD 120GB, 512MB RAM, 6 USB 2.0).
My mini iPod 6GB (miP6) works correctly with iTunes 5 or 6, with its original factory software and settings and now with iPod update October 2005. I dont know if everything started when I first connected them two at the same time but they were working fine in the beginning.
One day my iShuffle, connected to my PC USB and transferring music from iTunes, , started to turn off and turn on, that is, iTunes showed it connected and then disconnected even I wasnt touching it. When it came back in iTunes I started to try to transfer music to it and this time it came off, and then came back without that music I tried to transfer in. This situation didnt go better even when I try to change my iPod to the other five USB ports, neither in my Notebook (PC WinXP SP2). I have reinstalled iPod with the original CD software, reinstalled iTunes and all the things I read at this forum. The situation was going worse until now, I dont know why, I cant use it anymore. The current situation, after all I did and I will explain what was - is:
1) When I connect it to a USB in my PC or Notebook, windows recognize it as a mass storage device and iTunes dont start automatically.
2) I go to windows explorer and there it is, Drive E: removable disk, but
3) But it looks like a Drive, with no disk in it. Its a kind of a CD-ROM drive with NO CD inside it. This way, I cant format it because I cant format a drive, just a disk, even partition it.
4) When I connect it to other PCs (winXP), with no iPod software installed, the systems first recognize it as Apple iPod and then as USB Mass Storage device, but the same way at my PC: OKB.
5) When I try to run iPod Updater I receive most of the times this message: Cant mount it. Some times it recognizes it as an iPod but I receive the message, during the restoring original software process, Firmware update failure. Disk write error, as you can see here: http://www.ivan.med.br/ishuffle.jpg.
6) So, to try to use Updater, at this time, is out of question. If there is anyway to save it, I think it must be through other software or adjustment, I dont know. I will show you a brief of what I have done until now:
Windows-try
- Current updater. Reinstalled old updater and run too. Reinstalled iTunes and all this stuff.
- Changed USB connection and reinstall USB drives.
- Installed iShuffle at another machine the same way described in iShuffle Manual.
- Tried to format it using windows explorer format tool and other no-windows native tools.
- Used partition magic and other tool to try to build anything in it.
- Used Click Administrative Tools, double-clicked Computer Management, and then clicked Disk Management in the left pane. Nothing appeared. When I connect my miP6 it is there, and everything works fine. Just remember.
- Used Windows tools (CMD tools) as DiskPart and MountVol. Nothing.
DOS-Try
- I used a bootable win98 formatted floppy disk, with USB ASPI support, and the system recognized the two USB devices I have connected that time: my Apple DEAD iShuffle and my Pendrive. But it could not assign a letter to iSuffle device, only for the pendrive. Ive used DUSE software too and the same answer, even with an instruction INT13 that allow me to use Fdisk. But even Fdisk could not recognize the iPod as a Disk.

Same problem in the US...after 1 week of use, hit the reverse button while playing and it stopped, never to resume. Tried the latest software updater for both the ipod and itunes, and received the Ipod Service and Can't Mount Errors. After multiple attempts, all I get is the updater screen stating Initializing.. Additionally, when I tried to reinstall, it stated that the ipod needed to be formatted, yet I received a message that the ipod couldn't communicate. Seems like too many people are having the same issue!

Is this the end of the nanos that scratch so easly????

I bought my second nano today (4GB white). interesting thing is that my nano has been in my pocket all day and does not have a scratch on it. not even a hair. looks right out of the box. i even wiped it with several different kinds of fabrics and towels just to see what would happen. could apple have finally fixed the problem? is this the end of the nanos that scratch so easly???? if so apple could have the perfect product. my first nano scratched like it was made out of candy. needless to say i quickly returned that one.

I don't think Apple has fixed the problem. In fact, they don't believe that there is a problem.
I sent my excessively scratched nano back to Apple after getting the go ahead from customer support. Today, I checked the status of my return on Apple's web site. To my surprise, I found that my original nano was being returned and that Apple will not send a new unit.
Apples position is that the nano is made of the same material as the other ipods and it does not scratch any easier than their other models. I was told that I should have bought some sort of protection for the nano. In other words, Im stuck with a product that they view is not defective, even though my viewing screen is getting progressively cloudy from scratches.

You mean you can't get to the Summary pane?
If you have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar

Run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, you probably will need to run the test 2-4 times as errors do not always appear on the first pass. If you get errors then that indicates you have a hardware issue and need to take the machine into an Apple Store or AASP to be professionally diagnosed. At that point you can then determine your options.

Every time I download app from AppStore but at the end it couldn't download. Not all time but sometime this problem occurre ! I have to retry the app for 3-4 times and after that it downloaded in iphone

You must have a separate Apple ID registered in the other store along with a valid bank-issued charge card in the other country, and a legal billing address in the other country.
Sorry... But... You cannot use other countries itunes stores.
You must be within the Country with a Valid Billing Address and Credit Card for that Country to use the iTunes Store of that Country..

Is there a way to prevent Robohelp WebHelp from appending characters to the end of the URL address for a TOC Entry?

I am running RoboHelp 10 on Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 64 bit OS.
WebHelp is appending characters to the end of the TOC entry's URL address. The characters "bc-n" where n is a number are being generated for all of the TOC Page Entries when I generate WebHelp output. We are exporting the HTML files for import into an application. The TOC Page Properties Link to: property does not contain the characters in RoboHelp.
We have standardized names defined for our application and the appended characters are not going to work in the application.

When I use the generated html output in IE10 Version 10.0.9200.16635 Update Versions: 10.0.7 (KB2846071) the characters show up in the URL when I hover the mouse over the TOC entry as shown in the screenshot below.

The two screenshots show that the Link to property does not have the characters "bc-7" but the URL address does.
Is there a setting or way to configure RoboHelp to prevent Robohelp WebHelp from generating and appending characters to the end of the URL address for TOC Entries?

I have never known Rh add any characters so I think something else is at play here. Please open one of the sample projects and see what happens there. Click Open on the RoboHelp Starter page and then click Samples in the ribbon on the left.

Return from a method at the end of a thread

I've written a slideshow in a class implementing Runnable, overriding the run() method.
I want that my a method "startSlideShow()" returns when the task of the thread ends (the thread mainly display images).
I've tried the the join() method (see code below) but the displaying of the images doesn't occurs any more.

Are you connected to the test socket? Do you have extension sockets in other rooms?
Try quiet line test. Dial 17070 option 2 should be silent with no hiss/crackle and best done with corded phone. If cordless then dull hum normal

Soaked 3GS in water, is this the end?

I lost my 3GS in the water, but picked it up after a few seconds. The screen is black, but there is a humming sound from the phone and i'm not able to turn it off. Also a red light next to the ear speaker is pulsating.
Please, can anyone conform that it is possible to get the phone back to normal after a few days of air drying?

About all you can do is remove as much visible moisture as you can, then put the phone in a zip lock bag of dry rice for 3~4 days & hope for the best. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. Apple has an out of warranty replacement program, the cost in the US is US $199.

Power issues all over: is this the end?

Full historic on the laptop:
- PB G4 15" 1.67 GHz bought in May 2005
- logic board replaced under warranty
- hard drive replaced under warranty last year
- battery was part of the battery recall program
- AC adapter died late last year, the thin wire finally came undone and I stopped using it as I started seeing sparks...
I then bought a third-party replacement AC adapter. My replacement battery also started to show its age after more than 300 cycles. I was starting to have issues with me leaving my PB more than a day under sleep, I would have difficulty waking the computer up (had to remove the battery, reset the PRAM, etc...). Finally, a couple of weeks ago, that same occurrence happened again but this time, impossible to charge the battery back. Computer would start fine from AC, I would pop in the battery but it would stay at 0% even after a day being plugged in.
I decided it was time to buy a new battery (NewerTech from OWC) and things were looking good last week. Everything was working fine and I was back at 3+ hours of battery life... Then yesterday, I left my PB open on my desk, plugged in. I came back a couple of hours later, impossible to wake it up. If I press the power, I get the chime, fans kick in and then nothing. Even removing the battery and resetting the PMU with the power button was not working. Only thing that worked was leaving the computer w/o battery and power for like 30 minutes and then starting again to power it up... At first I got a kernel panic (grey screen + noway sign) but after a couple more tries, I was able to start and everything seemed to work fine... But today, again, I'm unable to power on the PB...
Any suggestions? Do I have to start looking at the 13" MBP? It stinks cause I was really hoping I could eek out enough from the PB to have a USB 3 laptop as my next one...

thing is, the release notes state that messing around with core settings in audio prefs can help but they add that different settings will be needed with different projects and i jus can't be bothered to start with all that considering how stable things have been 4 me in the last year or more
maybe i have slightly over-reacted (after one stressful week) but comments like the above (from sliderson) are truly dull & limited. this board is full of peeps lamenting crashes with 9.1.3, big thanx to those like mike connelly who can offer something positive in the midst of general panic
hopefully i'll change my mind as i continue to monitor the consensus of the community here, particularly around this issue of settings for numbers of cores. when peeps who know much more than me about the inner workings of macs tell me these settings really solve the issues i'll listen and take note

How do I keep a completed video from running on past the end, showing black screen?

My completed Premiere Elements 9 video does not end where it should, it runs on for another five minutes - showing black screen. Do I need to place an end marker to stop the video or change a setting? This has not happened on other videos I've created.

You were right. There was a straggler lurking out there. I deleted it and was able to get the Work Area Bar to snap back to the correct video length.
