1.5.  Spectral display

Spectral display is not displaying properly.  Shows two solid colors only.  Could not change even when assigning new color scheme.
Ideas?

It might be the same problem as before with
ExternalInterface.
I don't know if the page encoding for the html page will make
a difference
e.g. charset=utf-8
Otherwise you could just use a similar approach to the answer
for your recent question about problems with ExternalInterface -
perhaps you can use javascript's escape function for
encoding:
so.addVariable("flashVarText",
escape(“111哈哈哈哈哈"));
Or if no-one else has a better answer here, then try the
swfobject site to see if someone else has encountered it.

  • Export Audition Spectral Display to After Effects

I want to analyze sounds in Audition, then export the combined waveform and spectral displays, along with the sounds, to After Effects, where I will add text.
First step, I suppose,  would be to save Audition display (as .mov, I suppose).
    Is this correct?
    Is it possible?
    How should I start?
    Thanks,
    George

You will need some screensaver software to save Audition's graphics.

  • Audio files opening in spectral display...how to change to waveform?

This started happening randomly. I can't seem to locate where to switch the default setting from spectral to waveform. Will you please help with a solution?

There are several ways to turn off the Spectral display. First from within the View menu which also has a keyboard shortcut of 'Shift + D'. Or by clicking on the little blue outlined red icon box to the right of Multitrack at the top left of the screen. Or by dragging down the little down arrow grey icon top right of the Spectral display space itself.

  • Change brightness of spectral pitch display for quiet recordings

    Hello,
I've found that for quiet sections of recordings, the spectral pitch display is almost invisible. Is there a way of increasing the brightness?
Processing the audio to slap on an extra 10-30dB of volume is my workaround for the moment, but I'm not very happy with that. It means I have to alternate between the processed version to see the spectral display, and the original for actual work. The recording in question is a classical concert, so the difference between quiet and loud passages is sometimes substantial.
    Thank you,
    3p.

    Which version of AA?
In CS6 (and I think CS5.5) there is an option under Preferences>Appearance to increase the brightness of the display.  Does this help?

  • Grayscale spectrual display?

Hi! How can I change color schema in a spectrual display to grayscale? I found article for 3.3 version, but not for CS5.5 ..

In Audition CS5.5, the colors for the spectral display are not editable.

  • Using the lasso in spectral editing.

In previous versions I could take the lasso selections and move them past the lower and upper limits of the spectral view -- I could also get the lasso to select everything that fell within it's marque (for example if I want to cut a whole word and move/paste it elsewhere) but in CS 5.5 no matter what I do I can't get the lasso to grab the really low frequencies.
Is there something obvious that I'm missing?

There are many times where words overlap and the only way I can separate them is visually using the spectral edit view (I like the linear display mode best, I have a hard time "reading" the logarithmic modes) -- often times I'll start to say a word and realize I pronounced it wrong or meant to say something else and I can correct myself easily in the flow of speaking while recording... having the ability to surgically cut out and replace the bad word (or stuttering) is a vital part of my audio editing workflow.
It looks like the issue is an "Anti-aliased" and/or "Softened" selection mode on by default with the lasso -- I remember the older version having similar issues early on but I can't remember how I got it work the way I wanted, but I do know that if I made my selection past the bottom edge of the spectral display it would cut all the way down to the lowest frequencies cleanly.
The main reason I can work with Audition so well is the spectral display -- it allows me the ability to work with my wacom tablet and eyes like I do in any graphics application -- and I am much more skilled in that arena than with my ears/waveform view (although for really tough clicks and pops that is often the best solution)
BTW the other thing that is driving me a bit batty is moving the timeline to the top instead of the bottom -- panning/scrolling by just grabbing the timeline was much easier and more intuitive with it at the bottom (as it was previously).
I'm not sure how the phrase those things for a request submission though...

  • Timeline Lagging in Playback

So I have an issue with Adobe Audition CS6.  When I playback ANY audio file and watch it in the timeline the timeline lags.  Either the waveform or the spectral display, the video is always lagging behind the audio.  I can't find any answer to this anywhere.  And it isn't a consisten lag either.  It gets wors as time goes by.  It seems like for ever fifteen seconds of playback the timeline lags behind the audio an extra second.  So at a minute it is four seconds behind.  When I stop and start it catches up but the lagging builds again.
I'm at a total loss now.  Thank you for any help.

The first thing to ask is whether you've installed the 5.0.2 update? If you haven't, you can find it here (assuming you're a Windows user). This resolves a number of issues, and really is the first thing you should try.

  • Thinkpad SystemUpdate - Language settings for downloaded utilites?

There seem to be slight troubles in the way how Lenovo's SystemUpdate keeps (or does not keep) track of regional, language-dependent settings.
Scenario: Installed a clean Windows (english, non-T61-specific) XP SP2 on a T61, copied and installed T61-specific network drivers and SystemUpdate and then started automatic SystemUpdate search and install.
Problem: SystemUpdate loads and installs mixed language tools and utilities (partly english and partly german) based on facts which I currently can not reproduce. E.g., installed version of ThinkVantage Productivity Center is the english one (as intended), Fingerprint reader utility and some others are all in german. Selected WinXP keyboard layout was german, country/locale set to Austria but I'd prefer to download and install plain english drivers and tools.
Any hint what factors influence on SystemUpdate's decision for a specific language and how I can configure the language for downloads? I do not remember of having seen any language selection option.

Audition is now included with the CS 5.5 suite.
Jim thanks but as you can see I firstly stated that I have used the Production Premium suite.
My main beef with Adobe being that the most likely area of interest after everything else in Premiere being "native" and fast is that you will have noise artefacts on your audio timeline which you may wish to fix quickly.  Of course in FC Pro you could "round trip" out to Soundtrack Pro and take a noise print do other stuff.  What I REALLY LIKE about Audition is the spectral display/ability to use stuff like the healing brush it is a much more intuitive way of doing repairs.
This is often the trouble with marketing departments they simple do not understand how things work out in the field.
But once again I wish to congratulate Adobe on their comprehensive metalogging features and the abilities to embed the metadata or separate sidecar method.  GREAT WORK!!!

  • Bug with Reverb/Full Reverb Effects

I just got AA3 a few weeks ago, and have immediately noticed a few problems, the most serious being an issue that occurs when running the "Reverb" or "Full Reverb" effects.
    Specs: AA3 plus 3.01 patch
    CPU: Intel Centrino 1.6 GHz
    RAM: 1 GB
    Windows XP Pro SP3
Problem: When I am running multiple effects in the multi-track view and one of them is either "Reverb" or "Full Reverb," then the all effects execute their functions approx. 25 seconds earlier than it is supposed to.
Ex: I am currently mastering a .wav file, approximately 3 minutes long in the mutli-track view. In the effects rack I am running "Multiband Compression," "Tube-modeled Compression" and "Full Reverb." When I start playback on the file, the Multiband Compression interface display reflects what's going on in the file 25 seconds later in the track. IE 25 seconds before the track finishes, the compressor stops compressing, and the spectral display within the interface drops to -80 dB (because it thinks the song is over and is not recieving any signal to process).
Furthermore, this seems to affect automation as well (but only for effects---as far as I can tell it does not effect volume or pan automation). When I automate Full Reverb to run from say WET=0% at minute 1:00 to WET=100% at minute 2:00, I can both hear the reverb begin to engage and watch the WET slider in the Full Reverb interface begin moving at approximately minute 0:35 instead of minute 1:00. I have found this glitch to happen only whenever I am using the "Reverb" or "Full Reverb" effect. It seems to affect all tracks, regardless of which track the Reverb effect is applied to--IE If I am using Full Reverb on Track 2, Track 8 effects still execute too early.
This is particularly troubling when it comes to compressors, because it implies that it is performing compression calculated for time=1:00 at time=0:35 instead. So, if the compressor is supposed to take off 3 dB at t=1:00, it is actually taking it off at t=0:35.
What's going on here? Has anyone else experience or noticed this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My advice is to not use Reverb or Full Reverb in any Multi Track session.  In fact, there is a warning box that comes up when you put Reverb or Full Reverb in an FX rack in Multi Track.  The warning box tells you that these effects are CPU-intensive and not at all appropriate for use in Multi Track.
So, you can either switch to Studio Reverb (and that reverb was put in specifically because it is less CPU-intensive than the others) or get one of the hundreds of reverb plug-ins out there (and many of them are free).  There used to be a good list of free plug-ins on this forum.  I don't know if it is still there, but I do know that there is a list at http://www.audiomastersforum.net that recommends many good freeware reverb plug-ins.

  • Audition has encountered a fatal error and needs to shutdown

All of a sudden, Audition has been frequently giving me this error "audition has encountered a fatal error and needs to shutdown" and shutting down when I select an area using the Paint Brush selection Tool in the Spectral Display. I have made lots of use of this tool in the recent past, editing out noise in recordings. But, this error now makes that tool almost useless.
How can I fix whatever is wrong?
    1) MacBookPro with Lion 10.7.4
    2) Audition CS6, v5.0 build 708
    3) Editing wave files using the Paintbrush tool to select small areas to reduce the level.
    4) Does NOT seem file dependent, since this problem has occurred on brand new wave files and previously edited wave files. I do not know if it is restricted to wave files. That is just all record - wave 24/96.
    5) The problem generally occurs when I simply select an area. I think sometimes it doesn't surface, until I try to adjust the level.
    6) I have used this tool a lot, prior to this problem surfacing. I' had no troubles. then, on a file I hade been making lots of little edit to, to clean up the noise, it suddenly started giving me this error. Since then, any file I have tried to use the Paint Brush tool give me this error. Forces me to save  VERY frequently.
    Any ideas?
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
First, let me ask that the next time this crash occurs, please locate and send the corresponding OS X Crash log.  To locate this file, do the following:
    Open Finder
From the menu bar, choose Go > Go To Folder...
In the "Go to the Folder" box that pops up, type: ~/Library/Logs/Diagnostic Reports/ and click Go
Locate the Adobe Auudition CS6_2012... file that is most recently dated and send it as an attachment to [email protected]
I would then suggest two steps to resolve this:
    Update Audition:
Click Help > Updates in the menu bar and update Audition CS6 to v5.0.2
If you still experience a crash after updating Audition, let's temporarily reset the preference files for Audition and see if that makes a difference.
    Open Finder
From the menu bar, choose Go > Go To Folder...
In the "Go to the Folder" box that pops up, type ~/Library/Preferences/Adobe/Audition/ and click Go
Rename the "5.0" folder to something else, such as "5.0_OLD"
Audition will rebuild these preference files to its defaults on the next launch.  See if this crash is still a problem.
    Thanks!

MIDI Sequencing and VSTi support is not available in Audition CS6.  There was a lot of primary feature development this cycle, and I would not have wanted to make the compromises to a MIDI environment that would have been necessary to squeeze it in this cycle.
MIDI composition support remains in our feature backlog and is considered for each release, but there are several reasons it doesn't typically bubble up higher in priority.  Audition and Cool Edit always shined as audio editing tools, and this has always been the focus of the team with MIDI support sort of an afterthought, but never our core competency.  With Audition 3, we built a basic MIDI Sequencer with VSTi support, but ran into some implementation speed bumps when plugging it into the existing playback engine that resulted in a less-than-great experience in my opinion.  It functioned, but I've never felt it held up to the other areas of Audition in terms of usability and simplicity.
I know there are those on the team - myself included - that would love to develop a full MIDI environment, and while it's never been a highly-demanded feature, I know plenty of users would like a basic composition workflow in Audition as well.  If we tackle this, I would hope we can take the time and resources to design a very competent interface that you enjoy using, and not just build something as a check mark on a feature list.  We can start a separate thread on this, perhaps in the Feature Request forum, and discuss in detail what sort of functionality and tools you would like to see in Audition to support MIDI and virtual instruments.

  • Please confirm, before I submit a bug report.

Open any file in audtion CS6.
In a spectral display chose a marquee selection tool and select a portion of the track in the lower frequency range.
    Adjust gain or delete.
Observe the spicke appearing just outside the vertical edges of the selection. Audibly a pop is introduced.
This does not happen in CS5.5
    Please confirm

.wav, was able to do so with mp3 and others as well. I have as an example adjusted the gain by -24db for the selection, but this also happens for copy and paste and such. In other words the areas outside of the selection are affected. See attached images.  in the third image the freen marks correspond to the edges of the original selection

  • Weird Digital Artifact

Has anyone ever encountered a noise like this in recording?
I recorded sound on a video shoot a few days ago. When we got back to the studio, all tracks had this weird, chirpy background noise in them. You can hear it below.
    http://charlesflynt.com/chirpy_artifact.mp3
Also, here is the spectral display from Audition of the same clip.
You can see the artifact clearly. I have no idea what we did to produce this and I have not been able to reproduce it. My field recording equipment is: Azden MX 100 shotgun mic, feeding into an Azden FMX-42 field mixer, which is hooked up to a Tascam DR-40 digital recorder. I use all high quality XLR cables.
I used the Sound Remover effect in Audition to try and remove it. It did a decent job. But it left the voice recording sounding a bit strange. So I had to hide that with some background music.
Can anyone tell me what caused this and how to avoid it in the future?

David, I just had a graphics card issue, for me it looked more random like this:
If it is hardware trouble or other system wide trouble, then hotwheels should see the same broken menus when working from a different user account.
Did you test it? Is the problem independent of your account, Jon?
Then id look into all the secret hand shake startup and shut down voodoo like resetting PRM,  SMC,   fsck.
If it happens in the other account, then try David's suggestions:

  • Audition and USB Converters

Will I be able to use my Presonus 44VSL 4 channel analogue to digital converter (Device) to play direct musical instrument and microphone tracks into audition.
If so, can I consider Audition a top quality DAW like Studio one or Pro Tool, for music editing?
Sales department can't answer a single question for me anymore.

I'm intrigued by your saying some time ago that mastering engineers use Audition.  For its noise reduction cum spectral display, I thought at the time.  Anything else?
Yes. In fact it's the 'anything else' that started it all. What is it? Audition's resampling. What you get is an editor that's second to none, and one that will also resample your unnecessarily high bit rate masters back to a more reasonable rate, virtually without loss or artefact addition, for distribution. And when this started, Audition was just about the only sample-rate converter that would do this. Initially they wouldn't admit to using it (due to a certain amount of snobbery regarding its shareware origins), but I think that things have improved from that POV since they were 'outed'...
Mastering engineers generally don't do NR, but if they did, they would be rather more likely to use iZotope's RX2, as it's rather more flexible. You can't really say that Audition is at fault here though - RX2 is a dedicated product, and it's not that cheap in its advanced form. But it is stonkingly good, and now the only one I'd use on music.
