1.67 GHz PowerBook and 30" Cinema Display

I have a 1.67 GHz PowerBook with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 and am trying to run the optimal resolution on a 30" Cinema Display. However, I am unable to chose a resolution higher than 1280. It looks like my VRAM is only 64MB. I do have the dual-link DVI port. Do I need 128MB of VRAM to run the higher resolution?

It looks exactly like the Dual-link DVI diagram found here: http://www.datapro.net/techinfo/dvi_info.html#Page06
My Graphics/Displays in System Profiler read:
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700:
Chipset Model: ATY,RV360M11
Type: Display
Bus: AGP
VRAM (Total): 64 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002)
Device ID: 0x4e50
Revision ID: 0x0000
ROM Revision: 113-xxxxx-145
Am I missing something? Could the 64MB version come with Dual-link DVI, but not be enough to power the resolution? Thanks in advance for any help.

  • 3 Monitors with 1 iMac and 2 Cinema Displays conected to Windows Gaming PC Help!

    Hi
I want to set up a 3 monitor gaming set up with 1 iMac in the middle and 2 cinema displays either side. This would be a tripple monitor set up.
I am looking to set up a new computer and i want to have 3 monitors. I also want to have an iMac so i want the iMac in the middle and two cinima displays next to each other. i Want to also conect these monitors with a Windows 7 gaming PC.
I want to hook up my very powerfull windows 7 gaming computer wich has 3 SLI GTX 560 EVGA cards. These cards have a display port output.
So i want to run 3 monitors from my gaming machine and i also want to have my iMac use the 3 monitors aswell. I also want to take advantage of the full, maximum resolution. I would get the thunderbolt cinema display monitors.
Gaming comupter has 3 display ports so i need to connect each graphics card to one of the monitors. I then need to conect the two cinema displays to the middle iMac.
I have not bought anything yet i just need to know if i can do this. Need to know stuff like what adapers to buy and what compatabilties.
I need to know if this is posible and how i would do it.
    Thanks

Could i use some of these cables?
It says they are thunderbolt conpatable.

All a touchscreen is going to do is replace your mouse or trackpad, you can't use two hands at once to gain any speed advantage organizing photo's.
Also it would have to be a pretty big touch screen, place your two hands over a 17" screen and most of the screen is blocked.
If you need something like that, talk to Microsoft, they have a "Big @ss table" that does that.
Gives me a backache just looking at those people

  • Macbook and the Cinema display

    Hi,
I'm about to purchase a Cinema display for my Macbook, before doing so I have several questions.
In the Apple store at the Cinema display section there is told that the Apple displays are specially designed for the Mac Pro and Macbook pro's. I wonder if the displays work in the same way with my Macbook. I know that I need a Mini DVI to DVI cable. My question is if there are any disadvantages compared to the pro products. And I wonder if there are any users with experience related to the Macbook and the Cinema display.
    regards,
    Koen

I have a first gen macbook and a 23" cinema display. I can't compare directly to the pro products but, I am very happy with the display and how it works with my laptop. I get full resolution and a firebox/USB hub. It's pretty sweet. I would tell you that if you are about to buy a display I would hold off for the leopard anouncement, the rumor is apple will replace the current display line up.

  • 24" and 30" cinema displays on same card?

Will either the GT120 or ATI card allow you to connect both a 24" and 30" cinema display on the same graphics card? The 30" cold use the dual link DVI port and the 24" could use the MiniDisplay port; I just don't know if two different resolutions on each port are supported...

You can run both from the same card, and with different resolutions. Of course you won't get full resolution on both displays when mirroring different size displays, but in extended desktop mode they can each run at full resolution..

  • IMac 24 and 27 Cinema Display as second monitor

Got older 24 iMac with mini DVI output for external monitor (ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB graphics)
Bought 27 Cinema display to use as 2nd monitor.
Bought Atlona DP400 to convert signal.
Connected everything and only resolution I get on 27 Cinema display is 1280 x 720, which is frustrating.
Is there any way to set higher resolution for external monitor? Scaled shows only 800 x 600 and 1280 x 720 (as best for display)
    Thank you for help!

If you mean those older Cinema Displays with the Apple Display Connector (ADC), then you need a mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter and the DVI to ADC convertor sold by Apple or others (expensive). I bought Apple's DVI to ADC box last year and use it to add the 23" Cinema Display HD to a Powerbook G4. Works great.
I haven't bought a mini-DisplayPort to DVI adapter/cable to use the ADC display off my iMac, because I don't have the desk space for two large monitors and two large printers.

  • Will my old isight camera work with my Macbook pro and HD Cinema display?

I have it hooked up but can't get the computer to switch from the built in camera to the external one.

Firewire iSights can be picky about how they are connected. My first suggestion for your particular trouble is to try connecting directly to one of your Mac's built-in FW ports rather than via the monitor's Firewire hub. More info:
      http://www.ralphjohns.co.uk/EZJim/EZJimpage6.html
If necessary, you can use the suggestions from How to test your (external) iSight to ensure it is functional to be sure it is working with your new Mac.
The solutions to your issues about switching from the built-in camera depends on which application you are using to operate your iSight. Here is how camera selection works in a few exampleS:
    (1) For iChat, you can choose which iSight you use in the "Camera:" choices bar in iChat > Preferences... > Audio/Video that appears when more than one compatible camera is connected. Although your camera choices will be different, the choices bar will look something similar to the Preferences settings shown here:
If you cannot see this choices bar, your Mac is recognizing only one (or none) of your iSights. In that case, consider the suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
This choices bar solution applies ONLY to iChat. Most other applications also have settings that allow you to choose which camera to use. However, they do not all work the same way.
    (2) For instance, iMovie HD's camera choice is NOT set via Preferences. When you have more than one compatible camera connected, iMovie uses a drop-down menu choice something like this (depending on which version of iMovie you use):
Note: Because I had no built-in iSight connected when I made this example, when my external iSight was disconnected, the drop-down menu showed only "Time Lapse." Because your Mac has a built-in iSight, your built-in iSight would show in the drop-down menu even when no other camera is connected. Connecting your external iSight should allow you to choose either camera.
iMove 8 (from iLife '09) uses a different camera choice button shown in this article:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/10172.html
In general, you can use your Mac's help for the application in use to find out how to select among more than one connected camera.
    (3) Photo Booth is a different matter. PB is such a simple, basic app that it offers no menu selectable choice. Unless you make your built-in iSight the camera being used by some open application before you launch Photo Booth, Photo Booth will use ONLY your built-in iSight.
However, you can use the trick from ¶ 4 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302781 to let Photo Booth use your Firewire external  iSight:
    • Connect your external iSight and turn it on.
    • Quit Photo Booth (PB) if it is running.
    • Launch any app with a user-selectable camera "Preferences..." menu command.
(The "tip" suggests that you use iChat, but others should work as well.)
    • Open "Preferences..." and set the camera "Preference" to use your built-in iSight.
    • Now launch PB. PB should now use the external iSight
because your built-in camera is in use by the other application.
    (4) For apps other than those above, see their Help or other documentation.
    (5) If you have specific questions, we will try to help, too.

  • New Mac Mini and Apple Cinema Display

I have just upgraded my Mac (G5 PowerMac) to a new Mac Mini.  I am still using my Apple Cinema display - but I cannot not play all the purchased movies that I have on iTunes now...????

    Greg,
Are these movies HD? If they are, you might be having a problem with HDCP which is copy protection that won't let you view movies if all of your equipment is not HDCP compliant, which probably is your Cinema display. I also have a late 2012 Mac mini with an older Apple 20" Cinema display and cannot watch HD itunes movies. You will have to watch in standard definition. Of course you might have  a different problem, but your question seemed similar with my situation. What is strange is that you were able to watch from your G5 Powermac. Maybe the power PC chip allowed viewing as opposed to intel chips, which I think intel created HDCP. Somebody on these boards probably has better answers then me ;-)

  • Pixel Distorsion: MacBook Pro and 30" Cinema Display

Connecting the MacBook Pro to the Cinema Display using the Dual Link DVI Adapter (USB from Display plugged in Adapter, Adapter USB plugged in USB Port > not next to Mini-DVI Port) produced wild coloured Pixel Lines in the Dark Areas (really annoying) and starting After Effects CS4 it even gets worse: The full Interface is blinking green on the edges of each Panel.
    Pleeeaaaaase help!!

I have the same problem with my 30" HD display and the new 15" MBP. However, I did not have this problem initially. Until yesterday I had been fortunate not to experience issues (see reviews of the dual link adapter at the Apple store) regarding the 30" diplay. However, after contacting applecare about an unrelated issue, the technician had me restart holding the "shift" button. He said this would "correct a lot of stuff". Well it didn't seem to do anything except cause my 30" monitor to exhibit these same problems that everyone else is complaining about! Apple, please address this flaw!

  • Macbook Pro and 30" Cinema display for gaming?

Does anyone know if a Macbook Pro (17" i7 2010) would be powerful enough to drive the 30" Cinema display (or a Dell 30") specifically for gaming to a reasonable performance FPS with a game such as Call of Duty 4?
Would I have to knock down the resolution from the native 2560x1600 and if so is the image quality still acceptable or blurry? I realize I need either the dual link adaptor or the display port to achieve the max resolution but just wondering if it is asking too much of the graphics card?
Thanks in advance, any info much appreciated.
    Rick.

Hi. The graphics card will be able to handle it. I would suggest using a Min Display Port to HDMI adapter. Most new adapters will even transfer the sound too so you can use the speakers built speakers on the TV.
I often use my 2008 model MacBook Pro with a Mini Display Port to HDMI on my 62'' Samsung DLP. Perfect 1080p quality.

  • Using 30" and 23" cinema Display also as TV/HDTV

CAn the 23 " and 30" Apple Cinema Displays accept regular 480i tv as well as higher resolutions of HDTV, such as 780p and 1080i
If yes, is there a way to connect both a TV tuner HDMI output AND the MacBookPro DVI output thru some kind of an A-B switch to the monitor's single digital DVI input???
Is the lag time on the Cinema Displays too long and slow for typical TV programming, especially sports???
    Thanks
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I would stay away from the Apple 30" with what you have in mind. Also, if you have a viewing audience that is meant to be able to see the computer's output on the screen, consider going larger than 32 inches. A 32 is a little small for distance viewing. You might want to go to a TV retailer and look at a display model. Start backing up from a 32" TV until you reach a distance that your audience will be at. Then decide if a 32 will work or not.
