1.67GHz G4 vs. 2.1GHz G5

Hi!
I'm currently deciding upon whether or not I want to go mobile. What is stopping me from making my decision, is that I feel I may be able to get a better performing computer if I were to purchase a desktop.
Exactly how much more performance am I likely to receive with a 2.1GHz G5 (iMac) over a 1.67GHz G4 (Powerbook)?
Thank you for your time.

Thank you for all your repsonses! They're really appreciated!
What music applications do you use on your Powerbook, David? Probably the most demanding thing that I will wish to throw at it, is a 16-track multi-track recording at 96kHz/24bit (that will be 8 via ADAT and 8 via analogue). Do you think that the Powerbook can handle this without falling over?
You see, at the moment, I'm thinking that if I can get a better desktop, I could sacrifice the mobility, and just work at home. But, if the G4 can handle what I need to throw at it, then I'd be more than happy to go with that option.
I am waiting to see what Apple announce at MWSF next week before I spend the money. You never know, they may release a new Powerbook (possibley a 1.66GHz 13" one?). Saying that though, the transition between IBM and Intel processors is going to take a while, with the first revisions being the test-pilots for the whole thing (plus all the software that will need to be ported/re-written).
What I'm thinking, is that I may be better off sacrificing the mobility for now, getting a better and stable desktop, and then in about 6 months time to a year, sell it and purchase a MacIntel Powerbook. It's just an idea, but I'm not sure yet. If the current G4 Powerbook can offer me what I need, then I see no reason not to go for it.
Thank you for your time.

  • Imac g5 20" 2.1Ghz VS powerbook G4 17" 1.67Ghz

have just bought a refurb powerbook g4, 1.67ghz ppc processor with 2gb ddr2 ram
was considering migrating fully from imac g5 to this powerbook, but have just done a render test same project, just adding one filter (emboss) to 2mins of video
imac took _1min 31secs_ (i even had safari, firefox, real player, bluetooth file exchange, text edit and preview running at same time- processor set to auto))
powerbook took, (*groan*) wait for it, i mean, really, wait for it.... (had just fcp 5.1 running)
    _9mins 17secs!!!_
i work as a video editor, i have to use my own computer and use a desk to edit from (the deal is i do a bit of pa work as well) i want to be more mobile hence the purchase of the pbg4 which was the highest spec laptop at time of imac g5 purchase 2years ago.
Question is, is this massive deficite in performance is it normal? (8x slower) i was hoping there wouldnt be such a gap, i guess ill just have to cope until i can afford to migrate to intel mbp.
Would there be an app or setting somewhere that would give more juice?

    £1200 !!!
how many times over would the mbp be over the imac g5 (2.1Ghz g5, 1.5gb ram)?
i think ill wait till xmas/jan so battle it out with it for the next month or so.

  • TiBook 1Ghz -- Maximum internal hard drive limit?

Looking for a definitive answer to the question of hard drive capacity limitations in the TiBook --
I have the last of the mighty TiBooks -- a 1Ghz, 15". I want to replace the internal hard drive. Is there a limit to the drive capacity I can use and access in this PowerBook? Is it the 120 GB limit that affects most older Macs, or can I put a 160 GB (looking at WD Scorpio...Circuit City $79!) and be able to access the whole thing?
If anyone has the answer, has experience doing this or can point me to the KB documents, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

The Drive Compatibility Database at xlr8yourmac.com contains four reports of successful installation of 160GB drives in 1GHz Titanium Powerbooks. There are no reports of unsuccessful installations in that model. There are no reports at all of 160GB drive installations in the 867MHz Tibook, successful or otherwise. There are also no reports of 160GB drive installations in earlier Tibook models (800MHz and slower), successful or otherwise. Previous posts in the Tibook forums have reported the earlier models' inability to "see" more than 127GB of a 160GB drive, no matter how it has been formatted or prepared.
Thus, Hardy Geer's report (above) about the 1GHz Tibook is quadruply confirmed, and whether or not the simultaneously-produced 867MHz Tibook can use 160GB drives remains uncertain.
To find the four reports, I searched the database for Powerbook G4s running OS X 10.3 and 10.4 in which hard drives manufactured by Hitachi, Fujitsu, Seagate, Western Digital and Samsung, all of whom make 160GB drives, had been installed. Then I scanned all the reports that came up, to determine which PB G4 model each report concerned.
There were many more reports of successful 160GB drive installations in Aluminum PB G4s, including at least one in the original 1GHz 17" Albook introduced in January 2003 - the same time as the 867MHz 12" Albook. Though Albooks aren't my specialty, I suspect this indicates that all Albooks can use 160GB drives, and perhaps larger ones. There was only one report of the installation of Western Digital's recently-introduced 250GB IDE drive (the only one bigger than 160GB currently on the market) in a Powerbook, and that was in a late-model 1.67GHz Albook.

  • Optical drive and HD not working together in 1.67GHZ 15" G4

I have G4 Al 1.67GHz Powerbook that I am unable to make the Optical drive be recognized when the internal HD is connected. If I put the HD in an ext Firewire enclosure and boot from that, the optical drive works fine. I have tried two Motherboards, different flex cables on both drives, different HD and Optical but no change. I did have to load the HD in a 1Ghz 12inch G4 PB since I do not have a newer OS version than 10.4 and I have seen that the 1.67GHz requires 10.4.2. However, I loaded the drive and upgraded it to 10.4.10 before installing it in the 1.67Ghz. It seems to act like a IDE master/slave conflict. I also found an older optical drive that allows you to set the drive as a Master, slave or for cable select. When I set it to slave, it work just fine. the problem is I would like to use the PB with the original UJ-846 Superdrive it came with.
Is it possible that this is a problem with the software load?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Doug

    Hello.
I have a similar problem on my al powerbook G4 as well. I have a UJ 845e superdrive. It was working just fine, but since I installed Leopard (10.5.1) it stoped working. if i insert a cd or a dvd, it will spin it for a while before rejecting it.
Can you help me with that ???

  • PowerBook G4 1Ghz (Nov 2002) - can i install a 160gb Hard Disk inside?

    Hi
    I have a PowerBook G4 1Ghz (Nov 2002). I want to upgrade the internal 4200rpm 60gb drive to a 5400rpm 160gb.
Can my PowerBook address the full 160gb? Or is it limited to only addessing 128GB of it.
This page seems to says any mac introduced after June 2002 will be fine with drives over 128GB, but it seems like it's just refering to desktop macs.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86178
Can anybody confirm that it will work?
    Thanks!

I'm just wondering why the 667 won't recognise them?
The ATA controller used in those logic boards is not 48-bit LBA compliant. The first Powerbook LBs that had such a controller were the 867MHz and 1GHz boards used in the later DVI Tibooks. Other Macs introduced around the same time also had controllers that allowed the use of internal ATA drives larger than 128GB. So yes, the second part of your post is probably correct.
But be aware that after upgrading to a faster LB, you may no longer be able to boot to the discs that were shipped with your Powerbook or to those that were shipped with any other Powerbook, including a factory 867MHz or 1GHz Tibook. If that's the case, as it has been for some others who've reported here, it will leave you without any way of reinstalling a bootable OS 9.2.2, in case you ever want to. OS X 10.2.3 or higher can be installed from a retail installer disc set. But there's never been a retail OS 9.2.2 disc, and the DVI Tibooks won't boot to anything lower, so no retail OS 9 disc is usable with any of those models. This mattters less and less to most people as OS 9 recedes into the past, but it's something to be aware of.

  • 1GB Memory Modules in 1GHz 17" Flat Panel iMac?

    Hello There!
On searching this forum I see that there has been some discussion of people going beyond the stated maximum memory of 2x512Mb by using 2x1GB DIMM's from companies like RamJet.
    1. How many people out there have successfully done this?
    2. Any problems mixing a factory installed 256MB module with a 1GB in the user accessible slot?
I like to buy my memory from Crucial and, whilst they will sell me the 1GB modules, they won't guarantee they will work or support me. I'm hoping you guys can give me a bit more confidence before I take the risk.
    Thanks!

    IanB,
    1. I have 1.5Gb of RAM in my iMac 1.25GHz with no problems. There are numerous other users in these boards with >1Gb RAM.
    2. iMac G4's use single channel RAM and so there is no issue with installing RAM in any combination.
    3. iMac G4 <1GHz max out at 1Gb. iMac G4 ≥1GHz can take 2Gb. <p>
    4. IMHO 1Gb SODIMMs are prohibitively expensive in the UK and probably not worth the extra cost. I've never used the full 1.5Gb RAM available in my system even with EyeTV, iMovie HD, Photoshop Elements and iDVD running together. I installed a 1Gb DIMM and 512Mb SODIMM which is a significantly cheaper combination.
    5. Both my 1Gb DIMM and 512Mb SODIMM are from Crucial. The DIMM I bought as a unsupported/guaranteed as a specific part-number and the SODIMM I ordered through their iMac G4 page. Crucial only support Apple's specs even though they are essentially wrong.

  • Mixing RAM Speeds In iMac G4 1GHz 17" Flat-Panel?

    I'm just checking here.
I have an iMac G4 1GHz 17" Flat-Panel, Model M8935LL/A (USB 1.1 version) that currently has the standard 256MB PC2100 (266 MHz) RAM module installed in the factory slot, and a 512MB PC2700 (333 MHz) RAM module installed in the bottom (user-accessible) slot. I bought the machine direct from Apple, so despite the "official" spec (which calls for PC2100 RAM in both slots), it's obvious that Apple knows PC2700 RAM will work in that machine. My understanding is that the faster PC2700 RAM simply downclocks to accommodate the lower 266 MHz bus speed of the M8935LL/A. As I understand the DDR SDRAM spec, any DDR SDRAM (PC1600 through PC3200) module will simply overclock or underclock to accommodate the host bus speed...but feel free to correct me if I'm mistaken on that point.
I'm fixing to upgrade the hard drive to a larger capacity model. I've done it before, so I know it's no picnic. Since I have to go past the factory RAM slot anyway to change the hard drive, I figure I might as well upgrade the internal RAM to the full 1GB limit. (Yes...I know Apple says you can't exceed 512MB in either slot, so please—no remonstrances about sticking to Apple's spec. The spec is wrong.)
Obviously, it's possible to mix the two RAM speeds between the two slots, since Apple shipped the computer that way. Here are my questions:
    • Is there any downside to going the other way when I upgrade the RAM—that is, putting a 1GB PC2700 (184-pin) module in the factory slot, and a 1GB PC2100 (200-pin) module in the user slot? The reason I ask is because my preferred supplier (OWC) can't supply me with both modules in the same speed.
    • Is there any performance advantage in both modules being the same speed—that is, both PC2100 or both PC2700? If not, I'll just buy the one of each speed that OWC has available.
    Thanks!

    jjw wrote:
So, you know have 2Gb available in your flat screen imac?
Yes indeed—2GB confirmed as available by Apple System Profiler. Both modules are PC2700. Everything is working fine.
I guess I can understand why Apple discourages users from replacing the 184-pin "factory slot" module. There's not a whole lot of slack in the motherboard connector cables, so it's best to disconnect them in order to get the bottom section to lie flat on the workbench. I suppose some folks might be hesitant about disconnecting things, but it's really quite simple, and involves only three connectors. After having changed the hard drive a few years ago, replacing the RAM was a piece of cake by comparison.
A word of caution to anyone who's going to attempt it, though. There are TWO heat sink interfaces between the bottom section (where the motherboard is mounted) and the top dome. Those heat sink surfaces are coated with thermal paste at the factory, but the compound dries out over time, becoming a rubbery membrane between the heat sink surfaces. Once you separate the top and bottom sections, the membrane rips apart, and the firm connection between the heat sink surfaces is permanently gone. It's a bad idea to simply put them back together after you change the RAM module; you won't get a good thermal connection.
The solution is to scrape all of the old rubbery compound off all four surfaces (two on the bottom and two on the top section). I did it with a piece of PVC, but you can use anything with a sharp edge that won't scratch the metal surface—even your fingernails will work, unless the old compound has dried out to the point where it's hard. After you scrape the old gunk off, apply new thermal paste to all four surfaces.
The other maintenance item you can perform while you're in there is cleaning out all the dust, which accumulates in vast quantities and interferes with cooling. I vacuumed it out with a plastic crevice tool, being careful NOT to touch any of the components with the tool. Vacuuming can build up a static charge on the tool, especially in dry environments, and high static voltages aren't friendly to microprocessors. I used a securely grounded anti-static wrist strap throughout the entire operation, and even wrapped it around the vacuum tool.
    Good luck!

  • Macbook (2.1Ghz white 2008 model) display won't turn on during start-up

           hi all,
    my problem is pretty simple.
Sometimes, after having used an external display with my Macbook (using the Apple Mini DVI > DVI adaptor: http://store.apple.com/au/product/M9321G/B?mco=MTY3ODQ5OTY ) the Macbook's own display won't power on during the next boot-up. I can hear the hard-disk start up, and the system boot, and I'm even able to navigate my way into the user login and shut the computer down (all via the keyboard). So the computer is definitely powering up (and in a seemingly normal way), but the display isn't.
For example, last night I was using an external display with my Macbook. This morning I plug the display back into my Mac Pro, then power-up my Macbook. But the Macbook's display won't turn on. It's as though it thinks the external display is still plugged-in. I know, that if I re-connect the external display, the Macbook's login page is displayed, but only on the external screen.
The problem only arose after I started using this particular external display (a cheap 22" BenQ, model G2222HDL 'senseye 3'). I wouldn't normally use the display with my Macbook, but my Mac Pro has a **really** noisy optical drive (CD/DVD), which makes watching films pretty unbearable (if you're into sound anyway, which I am).... so until I get my Mac Pro's drive sorted (when I have a few spare days when I won't be needing it), I'll have to continue using my external display with my Macbook to watch films.
My Macbook's specs are as follows:
    2.1Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Macbook (2008 model - I think, maybe 2009?)
    4Gb RAM
    Running OS X 10.5.8
Are there any known display issues with these models of Macbook? Or are there any software/firmware updates that address any display issues?
In general, I don't update the software/firmware unless I need to, or unless something doesn't seem to be working properly.
However, I've just checked Software Update, and noticed there is an SMC firmware update (1.4). So I might give that a go and see if the problem persists.
However, the problem is intermittant, and kind of unpredicatable, so I might not know for a while if it solves the problem or not.
Has anyone else had a similar problems?
Alternatively, is there a possibility there is some kind of virus or file-corruption causing this problem?
My girlfriend has a similar model of Macbook (which she's never had any problems with). Recently I moved a whole bunch of files from my Macbook to hers, and she noticed that hers had a similar issue starting up, where the display failed to turn on.... so it seems like
    a) it might be a common-ish problem in this model of Macbook
    or
    b) perhaps I've got some kind of virus on mine?
I've been using Macs for about 15 years (yet, I don't consider myself a computer expert, when it comes to the technical details). In those 15 years, viruses have never really been a concern to me, as I've never really thought they were much threat to Macs. However, I guess, as Macs get increasingly more popular, there's a possibility people will write more Mac-specific viruses...?
    Anyway, I'm open to suggestions : )
    Regards,
    Sam
    PS I've tried:
-re-starting the computer multiple times (which sometimes works, but usually doesn't).
-re-setting the SMC (which usually works, but not always)
-plugging/un-plugging the external display to try and jog the computer into noticing it isn't connected (which doesn't work)

let me ellaborate on this part:
"b) perhaps I've got some kind of virus on mine?"
I mean, " perhaps I've got some kind of virus on mine, and I've passed it on to hers?"

Use Tony's suggestion. I am running it right now and it is awesome. I love Mozilla but they basically screwed all of those older Macs over. Come on Mozilla. These Macs still work, and there are plenty of people with them out there.

  • How many screws are supposed to be install in a G4 Quicksilver 1GHz DP CPU?

    Hi.
I got a new (used, lol) Quicksilver 1GHz DP which is having problems "using" the first RAM bank (DIMM 0/J21 - closest to the processor). When I first got the machine (in the mail, well protected), I did a quick internal inspection, making sure that everything was properly seated - it had two pieces of RAM (512MB each) installed in slots DIMM 1/J22 & DIMM 1/J23. I closed it and started up from the Apple Hardware Test CD for the QS 2002 and everything tested fine. It had no OS, so I booted it up, installed Tiger and then used it for a couple of hours making sure everything was okay. Now, I thought when I'd first opened it, that I'd added a third piece of 512MB into the empty first slot before doing the installation and such, but now I can't remember for sure. The piece I would have added would have been tested and true from my other Quicksilver 867MHz (but on a QS 2002 motherboard).
My plan was to clean the QS 1GHz DP machine out, re-seating the dual processor cpu with fresh thermal paste, replace the fans in it, then move everything (ie drives, video card, pci cards, etc) from my older QS into the new machine, after I'd made sure everything mechanically was running okay. So I basically completely took the "new" QS apart, cleaning out dust, etc including the Motherboard - took out the power supply and case fan cage, replacing the fans there, cleaned and re-seated the cpu using Diamond thermal paste - then put everything back together. I put back in the original drive I'd just installed Tiger onto and original video card, but with two pieces of the RAM (Hynix 512mb) that I'd been using in my other QS, and one of the pieces that was already in the machine (Micron 513mb). I reset the CUDA button, then booted it up and it started up fine, I fiddled around for a bit, opening things, then put it sleep for about twenty minutes (to test that also). When I came back and tried to wake it up, the monitor woke up as in, the power light on it turned green for a moment, then it went back to amber, with nothing on the screen. The power light on the QS was green and the fans were running - so after a bit I held down the power light to shut it down, opened it and rechecked the video card, etc to make sure everything was plugged in okay - then tried to power it up, zapping the PRAM - the start-up sound bonged four times, then when I released the keys, the power light went out and it shut down. I tried again starting it up and this I got 2 beeps & flashing lights, which I looked up on my laptop and it said "incompatible RAM". So I removed the piece that came with it which just happened to be in the first DIMM 0/J21 slot (the other two pieces I've been using with no problem for over a year), . Started up the machine and it started fine - no problems. Then I shut it down and installed the 3rd (tested & true) piece I've been using in the other QS - it started up and mounted to the desktop, so I ran some software, put it to sleep, etc. Thought I'd figured out the problem, and continued with the transfer of drives, etc. Started up the machine and the red light on the motherboard turn red, fans powered up, it sounded the "bong", then shut itself off. I took the piece of RAM out, put it back in and it'd start up fine, but after a short period of time, it would freeze or shut itself off. I then went off on an extensive period of testing everything piece by piece (short of removing the cpu and the motherboard again) but couldn't find anything I'd done wrong - even thought it was because I hadn't used the 2-pin internal power connector in the power supply, so I removed the PSU again, and hooked it up to the other Quicksilver and had no problems. I even re-ran the Hardware Test (with the bank empty) and got no errors.
What I have noticed is that it'd be okay for a period of time AFTER I'd re-seat RAM in the first bank (pressing it firmly back in) - and then when it'd shut itself off, I'd opened the side door and it'd turn itself on again - I'd move the door a little lower, it'd turn itself off - then as I moved the side door again, back on - as if there was a connection problem. I inspected that bank up close with a magnifying glass and can't find anything physically wrong with it - no pins out of place, or dirt. I don't think I misplaced any screws for the CPU, but when I was done, I did notice that there is a fifth hole on the dual processor board on the extreme right that aligns right above a motherboard screw (when facing the opened computer with the back ports on the far side from you) - and I had only 4 CPU screws at the end. So I'm wondering if there should be a support post and screw between the CPU and the Motherboard, giving "ground" to the fifth copper-ringed hole on the CPU - the lack of which which might be affecting the first RAM bank?? Below is a link to a picture of the dual processor card. I've looked around the internet but can't find a clear picture or indication of whether I've missed a cpu screw or not.
    http://www.welovemacs.com/6612591r.html
I thought, before I took everything apart again, including the Motherboard and CPU, I'd find out if aa I needed was to add a support and screw to that fifth hole (which I do have access to) - if that would fix the problem. Or if that fifth screw is not needed, can you suggest something else I've missed - the fact that the machine turns itself on and off as I move the door is pretty weird. It's not the first time I've replaced a motherboard or cpu and I'm pretty careful and thorough, but... Sorry for the length of this and thanks greatly for your help.
    Karbon
Note: After a lot of reading and research, I decided upon Noctua fans for the case and power supply, hooked up via adapters to the Molex power connectors, not to the original 2-pin connectors, as I found I got a much higher cfm airflow that way. Also, other than the shutting itself off, I've had no software problems such as kernal panics or such at all. I've been using it for the past couple of days with the first RAM bank with no problems at all - posting this on it now.

Thanks Jon for your response - at least I know I didn't misplace any parts while putting back together. I'm probably going to strip it down again though, it just doesn't make sense. I agree that they can be temperamental but my other QS which only has a 867mhz processor I put into a 2002 motherboard (the old board had issues, so I replaced it with the newer version) has really given no problems since I first assembled it all together almost 2 years ago. And although I haven't completely taken it apart again, I have used it to troubleshoot various pieces of RAM, video cards, etc without any problems. Yes, it's picky about what PCI card goes where, but would just having a different processor on a similar motherboard cause such a glitche? And actually the only glitche has been this RAM bank thing - which does come and go when I move the door, so I must have missed something else when assembling it.
After reading through a number of other posts, I shut down and did another PMU reset with a piece of known good RAM in the bank - but to no avail - it still sounded the bong as if it was going to start, then shut down. So I unplugged it and carefully copper-brushed out the bank and blew it out, then started up with a piece of RAM in the dissenting bank (but none in the middle bank), into Open Firmware doing a NVRAM reset according to the Apple document. I booted into the drive running Leopard, put it to sleep without any waking freeze, then rebooted into the Tiger hard drive which I normally prefer to work from (I don't really see the hype about Leopard - I don't find any benefits from using it - I find it picky and next to impossible to search files with, without a big drama and extra work). Anyway, that's where I am now - typing this - so far, so good, but it's worked okay for a short time before after re-seating the RAM in that bank - a sleep and a reboot will be the defining moment.
    Thanks again.

  • Resetting a PB 17" 1GHz Battery that "thinks" it's dead?

I have a PB 17" 1GHz that just turned 3 years old. I have 2 batteries that I purchased with the CPU, and have rotated them through it's life. Neither of the batteries have gone more than about 3 months dormant (with a full charge), but recently, one of them has gone dead. Both batteries have under 40 charge cycles.
The bad battery now shows 0% or sometimes the PB shows that there's no battery at all. cocnutBattery sometimes reports that it has good capacity, but 1 or -1 mAh of charge. When installed, my power cord goes amber for about 20 secs, then back to green, and it won't charge.
Here's the odd thing - a few weeks ago, by putting the battery in and out several times, I was able to get it to charge. I gave it a full charge, then was able to use the PB for a good 2+ hours, almost as if it was in perfect shape, just a little short on time.
So, I did a battery condition as recommended by Apple, by letting it fully discharge (to sleep) overnight. The next morning, it had totally shut down, even though Apple says these batteries can stay in sleep for something like a month after fully discharged. At this point, the battery stopped taking a charge.
I've tried everything... reset the PMU... reset the nvram, popping the batt in and out, etc. For a while, cocnutBattery would show the charge cycles and other info, but now it shows 0 and the capacity and charge is -1 and 1. The PB menu shows that it's charging and at 0% (contantly), but the power cord is green - won't actually stay in a charging state.
Now, because the battery did take a charge recently, unless the Apple-recommended battery condition actually killed it, I know this battery is potentially functional. It seems like it's just locked into a logic state of "dead" and needs to be reset somehow.
I've scoured the new and the boards and can't find any tricks to do this. Does anyone have any suggestions? It's just my luck that I'm now 1 month past my 3-year APP plan, but with such a low cycle count on this battery and the fact that it died after running Apple's recondition procedure, if I can't reset it, I'm going to see if they can help.
    Thanks,
    -Mark

First, try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and homebutton for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data by resetting.
If this does not work, try to set it up as new device:

If still no luck, get your battery checked by Apple, your battery has one year warranty:
    iPhone Owners
Your one-year warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective battery. You can extend your coverage to two years from the date of your iPhone purchase with the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone. During the plan’s coverage period, Apple will replace the battery if it drops below 50% of its original capacity. If it is out of warranty, Apple offers a battery replacement for $79, plus $6.95 shipping, subject to local tax. Apple disposes of your battery in an environmentally friendly manner

  • 1Ghz TiBook - Random freezing. Logic board fault?

    Hi all,
perhaps one of you might be able to help troubleshoot this, because it's seriously driving me up the wall! I bought a used 1Ghz Titanium (DVI) recently and I'm finding that it freezes randomly when in use, requiring a comand+control restart. I've almost always experienced it in Safari, but also once in Entourage, illustrator and also in MacOS 9.2.2 Finder. Essentially what happens is that the cursor freezes and the powerbook no longer responds to keystrokes or trackpad input. I've tried an external mouse but that doesn't fix things either. The display is still lit but any moving graphics/video are frozen on screen. If music is playing in iTunes it cuts out leaving the last second of sound looping. Shortly after freezing I sometimes hear the fan come on, so perhaps there is a part of the powerbook still working after the crash (?). Also, I can select/deselect the caps lock and number lock keys and the green LEDs switch on and off, so perhaps it's not completely dead? The moment of the freeze almost always coincides with a mouse/trackpad click on the scroll bar, menu, safari menu bar, dock icon, form submit button, etc. It will on occasion freeze overnight when there is no mousing at all. generally though I can leave it playing iTunes all night and when I start using it in the morning it'll freeze when I collect my email or something.
the frequency of the freezing is semi-random; I have gone for roughly 48hrs of constant use without incident and then suddenly 2-4 crashes in short succession (ie, within about 10 mins of each other). Generally it freezes about 2 or 3 times a day. They do often come regular clumps.
Initially I thought it was Safari, or the OSX 10.4.5 installation that came with the powerbook, but I removed the entire HD and replaced it with the working drive from my Pismo and had exactly the same symptoms. Realising it was hardware related I did the usual drill of swapping, re-seating and removing ram, etc - but no dice. I've run Apple Hardware Test in a couple of 18hr loops but they return a glowing report about my hardware! techtool does likewise. I took it to the new Apple Centre in London where they ran their (apparently more powerful) AHT CD for 73 loops over 3 hours. Again, no reported errors!
I've read the long 'trackpad cable thread', and opened my powerbook to see if pinching the cable is an issue, but it's clearly not. I have lots of clearance around my trackpad cable and it's not in contact with any part of the case. I've even applied pressure all around the palmrest and the outside of my powerbook case hoping to induce a freeze but that doesn't seem to do anything.
What should I do next? when the powerbook works it's fine, but I'm at a loss as to what's causing the freezing. As a performing musician playing to hundreds of people a fault like this renders my powerbook useless since it must be absolutely stable and bullet-proof on stage.
thanks for reading and I'm grateful for any advice.

    hi there,
thanks for the welcome. i've been visiting here for a while and find all the posts very useful.
the trackpad issue is an odd one; my powerbook doesn't seem to show the classic symptoms of weird startup chimes or jerky cursor movement, etc in the other thread. I nonetheless opened up the powerbook praying that I'd find a pinched cable since that would have been so easy to fix. unfortunately there's nothing about it that looks problematic.
I had also suspected heat as being an issue and searched this forum a couple of times for related posts, but couldn't find anything. When I opened the powerbook i checked the fans for obstructions and blew out any dust i could see (i didn't have compressed gas). Again, they looked fairly normal to me - i didn't spot anything obvious like a trapped cable. As far as I can tell all 3 fans come on OK. First one of them and then after some time another one or two turn on after the powerbook has been running a while. (Is it actually possible to determine whether or not they're all working?)
It's difficult to say whether heat is actually related to the freezing. certainly I often notice the fans come on before a freeze, or right afterwards, but just as many times that's not the case. what is consistant however is that the freeze occurs the instance a cursor selection is clicked.
would you say this would be resolved by a logic board swap, because I know someone selling one. On the other hand, I'm a little confused by all the error-free reports I get when I run the Apple Hardware Test for extened loops.
    thanks again for your help!

  • Help and opinions - Memory in 15" PB 1.67ghz DDR2

I just purchased an extra 1gb stick of Crucial DDR2-667-PC2-5300 ram from Newegg. Figured since Crucial gave it their blessing for the DDR2 version of the PB then I could always use it in a MBP when I buy one if they are still using it at that time. Anyway, it is installed and seems to be working fine, the PB is ticking along perceptibly faster and no lockups or freezes.
The main problem is the PB doesn't know what RAM is installed. It reports it as PC2-3200 instead of PC2-5300. As far as I know 3200 shouldn't even run in this PB. I called Crucial and they said in their opinion this is not right. Either the RAM is bad (maybe miss-labeled?) or the PB is not able to detect it correctly.
Anyway, anyone else ever had this problem? Anyone else with their PB reporting the wrong type of RAM. I drove all the way to my local Apple Store and by the time I got there the Genius Bar was booked up for the night so no help there.
Any help and opinions much appreciated.

OK, FYI anyone who is curious. I took my PB down to the local Applestore and a tech helped me try and figure out what is up. We used an official Apple PC-2 5300 chip, and an official PC2-4200 (the same as what comes with the 15" PB-DDR2 version.
The Apple supplied ram were both Micron, same as the Crucial I had purchased, the tech said that was the best that I could use.
With the Apple supplied DDR2-5300, the system profiler reported the same as with my chip, that the ram was PC2-3200. When we swapped out for the PC2-4200, the profiler read it as what it was labeled, PC2-4200.
The tech had no explanation. He doubted that the chip was being clocked down that slow as it would be below the spec of what the PB needed. His guess was that something in the system profiler was glitchy and not displaying the specs correctly. He did offer that while I could exchange the ram for the PC2-4200 if I wanted it to be reported as such by the profiler, if it was himself he would keep what I had - especially if I intended to buy a MBP or other new Mac that could use the ram in the future.
Since my PB is running flawlessly with this chip installed I think that is what I am going to do, keep it as is.
