1.8 gamma setting

My rMBP display is a little on the dark side. Will playing with the gamma setting hurt the display? I currently have it set to 1.8

  • Color changes (darkens) in screen capture - color sync gamma setting?

I encountered this weird effect that the color darkens when I did a screen capture in one Mac but not the other.
In fact, it darkens more with shift-ctrl-cmd-4 (selection capture) than with shift-ctrl-cmd-3 (whole screen capture).
The knowledge base mentioned the gamma setting in http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3712 but the color darkens in the clipboard, so there is no way to change the color sync if it is not a file. I tried to re-calibrate my display using different gamma setting, but it didn't change any color.
In my other Mac, I can do a screen capture and the color is preserved as is. It is only in one Mac that did this. The color darkens so much that it practically becomes black-and-white.
Any suggestion would help. I think it has something to do with the color sync profile setting.

I found out that the darkening of the color in screen capture is caused by screenshot captured into jpeg. The darkening happens when the lines are thin, due to the averaging effect of jpeg. If the lines are thick, then the change in color is not apparent.
Now, the problem is, I can't change screen capture to capture in png. I used Tinker Tool, and deleted com.apple.screencapture.plist , nothing would change it back to capture in png.

  • Aperture Printing: Gamma Setting Counterpart in Photoshop?

I've finally gotten my printing sorted out in Aperture and can get good prints from my Epson 7500 most of the time. I still have margin problems, but I suspect that is more a driver issue. At any rate, I'm really starting to like the gamma setting in Aperture. It allows me to turn up the brightness of my monitor a bit and then compensate when printing--works well and gives my aging eyes some relief.
Now I'd like to keep it that way but have problems in Photoshop when I print--prints come out darker because I've got the monitor turned up. Does anyone know of a corresponding setting in Photoshop (CS2 by the way).
    Thanks in advance,
    Roy

    Victor,
Thanks for the response, but perhaps I wasn't clear. Here's more detail on the scenario. The monitor is calibrated and everything prints fine, in PS and Aperture. Because the apple monitor is so bright, that it has to be turned down to make photo's match (too much luminance).
Now what I would like to do is run the monitor a bit brighter (easier on the eyes). In Aperture, I can do everything as normal and just bump the gamma setting in the print dialog box from 1 to 1.1 or 1.2 and the photo prints great. Now I'd like to do the same in PS. So, the question is if there is anything in PS that accomplishes the same thing at the time of output.

  • Aperture vs. Photoshop Gamma setting

    Hello,
the first step of my retouching process in Photoshop consist of setting the gamma value between 2.2 and 2.7
As you can see on the image here under, the range is going from Black=0 to White=255, middle being 1 (non linear scale)
On the other hand, the gamma range in Aperture is linear (B=0 to W=+1, middle = 0.5)
Now, if I want to set the gamma value of my process in Aperture, what should I enter ?

    Hi Kirby,
    Niveaux stands for Levels, with N = noir = black, G = gris = gray and B = blanc = white.
Setting the gamma consists of setting the middle tones (i.e. G or middle case), what ever the software.
Your explanation for the % is interesting, but... disturbing !
If the default position of G correspond to a Photoshop value of 128 in Aperture, then it's not a typical gamma value. But I realize that I misled you... for sure.
I tried something that I forgot before posting my previous message (my big mistake !)
In Photoshop, if I "completely" move the middle cursor, the left most value is 10, the right most value is 0 (and not 0 to 255 as I was simply thinking...)
In Aperture, if I move the middle cursor, the left most value is 0, the right most value is 1
    To summarize :
    Photoshop : [10 ; 0], middle = 1
    Aperture : [0 ; 1], middle = 0.5

  • What does gamma set to 10 mean? - default gamma is usually 2.2

Premiere Pro default gamma is set to 10.  It can range from 1 to 28.  Is the default of 10 really a gamma factor of 2.2?  And how can we determine the actual gamma correction using Adobe's 1-28 scale?

Ah, I see.  I never knew it was there ;-(
However, if you study the waveform monitor when you apply it, and before you've made an adjustment, you'll see that it takes the whites down to legal levels - under 100 IRE.  It probably does the same (in reverse) to crushed blacks.
Much better tools for luma correction are pedestal/ lift gamma/midtones and gain/highlights control in either RGB Correction or Luma Corrector.
The 2.2 gamma you talk about is monitor "brightness", to simplify, and affects how an image appears on your local monitor(s).  Gamma in video correction affects the luma component of the source material itself, no matter what your monitor gamma is set to.

  • Gamma setting on export

When exporting files in Aperture what should the gamma value be set to?  Does this setting affect print, photos viewed on monitors, or both?  An explanation of this is doing will help.
    thanks,

I assume you're referring to the gamma adjust slider in the export dialogue when you click the "edit.." option.  Unless you have a reason to make your images look more exposed overall, leave it to the default of 1.00 (yes, I know this might not be a technically definition, but it's close enough for the answering of this question)
As the name suggests, gamma adjust alters the existing gamma by an amount.  It will affect the appearance whether printed or viewed.

  • FCP "Export - QuickTime Movie" gamma shift

Above is an example of what happens when I do a direct export in Final Cut Pro, using the Export -> QuickTime Movie function.  As you can see, the image is significantly brighter and the colors are a little more washed out (this image isn't particularly colorful, but trust me, it washes them out).  I always thought the Export -> QuickTime Movie meant the image would not be compressed--that it was a straight export using the sequence settings.
The image you see above was shot natively in ProRes 422 (HQ) using an Arriflex Alexa.  It has never been transcoded.  The bottom image is what it looks like using Export -> QuickTime Movie.  Totally unacceptable for a piece of professional software, if you ask me.
I can't express how infuriating this is, to have everything looking perfect in FCP and then exporting only to have it look like garbage.  I've been able to play with gamma correction a bit and have gotten it PRETTY close to the original look, but this seems like a horrible workaround.
Anyone else know why this is happening?  Is there a fix for this?
I'm working with FCP 6.0.6 and QuickTime 10.1.

    Sure thing, Meg.
Here's a source clip with "approximate" gamma correction:
"Approximate" gamma correction makes the image look flatter within Final Cut Pro than it actually is.
Now, the very same clip and frame, but with gamma set to "Accurate" :
Now, things are switched.  The exported image looks flatter than the source clip within FCP.
Here's another tidbit of info--the frame from my first post was professionally color graded and exported as a self-contained movie--so there were no filters, FCP or otherwise, being applied there.  But the difference is just night-and-day to me.

  • Fluctuating gamma on TV connected via S-video adapter

I have a television (generic CRT) connected to my Powerbook G4 through the S-video adapter and an RCA cable.
Periodically (and I think with increasing frequency), it looks like the gamma setting for the TV fluctuates when it is displaying the line in from the Powerbook. It gets darker and darker... and then it gets lighter and lighter... and then it gets darker and darker... etc. It's a slow cycle, but I haven't been able to find any way of breaking it (restarting the computer, reconnecting the cables, re-detecting the displays, turning mirroring on and off) and it appears to happen whether the display is mirrored or part of a multiple display arrangement.
The one correlation I might have seen is between the temperature of the computer and the fluctuation: hotter -> fluctuation is more likely (no faster or more extreme, just more likely to happen). I think. Of course, the Powerbook spends so much time raging hot that it's hard to tell if this is coincidence or actually meaningful.
Has anyone else experienced this or something like it? Since it's sporadic, I have to hope that there is a fix ("always reboot before connecting the TV" would be a fine fix... if it worked), rather than marking it down as dying hardware.
Thanks for any help folks can offer!

It was indeed Macrovision copy protection. And, if anyone happens to pull this up on a similar search, it's worth noting that not all video players bother to transmit the Macrovision "protection" signal (this occurred to me as a I read this. With DVDs, 'tain't the hardware -- it's in the software!)

  • Best rgb and gamma settings for external monitor with mountain lion

    Hi,
I'm using an LG LED 22 inch monitor with my MBP mid 2010 via minidisplay to hdmi. on OS X side the settings have been default. On the LED side the settings , if set to preset RGB it tends to fade the whites a lot. when i set to user definied and let the preset rgb be at it is, the colors are quote decent. currently they are on R 50, G 58 and B 59 and Gamma 1. Which is the best RGB and Gamma value for OS X Mountain Lion?

    Welcome to the forum.
First off, you need to go and buy a hardware monitor calibrator, such as an OptixXR or similar. This will build a custom monitor profile for your specific screen. Without this starting point you can forget ANY attempt at accurate colour matching.
Never (and I mean never) use a working space such as sRGB or Adobe98 as your monitor profile, that's not what they are designed for. Working spaces control what colours are possible in the image, monitor profiles control how those colours are shown on screen. Aperture uses it's own working space so you don't have to worry about that too much.
To answer the rest far too briefly, I'd suggest setting the proofing profile to sRGB and of course use sRGB for the export preset. The gamma setting you will have to adjust depending on how dark the Lightjet prints look compared to your screen. You will have to do test-strips to start with.
Your images looking crap on flickr on Windows machines is partly because Windows web browsers generally do NO colour correction, and only partly to do with the different gamma.

  • Contrast / Gamma Different in Canvas and Desktop Preview

    *The Confusion:*
The contrast of my video differs between the Canvas Window and Desktop Preview.
I assume the two are using different gamma settings. But I can't figure out what's going on, to know what those settings are and how to assess the final display picture.
    *Screen Grabs:*
Here's a screen grab of the canvas, with the image at 100%. The screen grab does not show the full frame.
    - - - http://epokhecutmedia.com/images/gamma-ts-canvas.png
Here's a full screen grab of image in Desktop Preview.
    - - - http://epokhecutmedia.com/images/gamma-ts-preview.png
    *What I've done:*
I've gone through every gamma setting I know of and can't match the Canvas and Desktop Preview or make sense of the difference.
Also, If I toggle between Display calibrations of 1.8 and 2.2 using the Display preferences in System Preferences, values in both the Canvas and Desktop Preview shift and still do not match.
    *Another seemingly related thing:*
My Canvas window display jumps between different contrasts (possibly gamma values) automatically while I'm working.
    For example,
    - - - I'll have video frozen. I'll play it and the image with brighten across the mids with playback. However, after freezing it again it keeps the brighter value.
    - - - When I'm using filter, such as the 3-Way Color Corrector, when I click to drag a slider, the image with darken across the mids. Sometimes, as I drag, the canvas will erratically jump back and forth between the two values.
    *Why this is a problem:*
I can't do basic exposure correction, because I don't know which is the accurate value to work with.
edit by: FordPrefectRevisited, Screen Grabs added

If I may re-open this thread, let me ask the question FordPrefect only alluded to:
Given that I should be using a pro-level HD broadcast monitor to view everything, given that every piece of footage is different in the particulars, and given that the Canvas Window image is almost always different than any other playback system (Finder, QT, VLC Players, etc.), are there general exposure/gamma changes y'all make to account for the visual difference between the Canvas Window and other playback systems? If you're anything like me, you don't start from SCRATCH on every single edit... You have a few go-to filters with a few go-to settings, and then make minor adjustments according to the needs of the footage.
For instance, in order to get the exported image close in exposure to the ideal Canvas Window image, I usually go: Effects - Video Filters - Quicktime - Brightness and Contrast - and then adjust the Brightness to 0.85 and it seems to get close.
You guys have anything like that? Thanks for any help!

  • How do you apply a gradient to Levels Gamma in CS2?

In Adobe Photoshop versions 5 and 7, while retouching photographs I was able to change a levels gamma setting on a selected area, then make the levels change gradual from one side to the other by using the gradient tool. This enabled me to compensate for a gradual fall-off in brightness across an area of the photo. But in version CS2 (Windows XP Professional), the gradient tool seems to work only for added colors, not for the levels gamma.
Does anyone know how to apply a gradient to a levels gamma change in CS2?  I can't seem to get it to work either on non-layered levels or on a levels layer.

Has it ever worked? If so, what's changed? (provide comments in description field): No
Same results with different file?: Yes
Same results with different computer?: Yes
Recent System Hardware or Software change?: Not Applicable

Thanks for your reply -- this is a novel approach I haven't enough experience to figure out for myself!  Chalk one up for the forum!   In the meantime, I think I've found the "missing link" from the simple way I did it in Photoshop 5 and 7 to a similar way in CS2 -- I surveyed all the Gradient Presets, and found one which lookied exactly like the oft-repeated black-to-white preset, but which the tool-tip revealed is actually a "levels" preset.  By selecting it, I was able to use the gradient tool to apply my levels change gradually across a selected area (or across the whole image if nothing is selected).  This way I avoid having to edit masks.
But thanks for steering me on to a new way of thinking that I need to explore!

  • Snow Leopard's Default Gamma & Color Correcting for Pre Press in Photoshop CS4

After searching the forums I thought I would start my own thread on this subject.
I have Photoshop CS4 and InDesign CS4 and I have continued to color correct, for pre press, in OS 10.4.11 Tiger with the 1.8 Default Gamma and 6500 color tempurature, using Apple's display calibration tools in the OS's System Preferances.
I want to switch to Snow Leaopard but with it's Defualt Gamma of 2.2, I'm not able to make my minitor manually adjust to the needed range for brightness and contrast that is needed to begin the calibration process.  Is there a way to color correct photos, for pre pre press, in Photoshop with a 2.2 Gamma setting in my display preferances?

I have had success just with Apple's System Preferences for color calibration.  I do design and pre press for a number of customers of the various printers I work with.  Most of the photos I work with are from digital cameras and are provided by the customer.  The only point in the whole process, where the photos get adjusted to have eye pleasing color, when coming off the printing press, is when I work with them.
The printers I work with continue to send their customers to me, for design and pre press, because they like my color work on the photos.  I send the pre press files as Press Optimized PDFs to the printer's FTP server and the printer does all the direct to plate separations in-house.  I want to continue to be reliable in that area and so the brighter default Gamma built into Snow Leopard seems to complicate things if I ever want to move up from Tiger to Snow Leopard.
I have two 17" Apple CRT displays that cannot adjust into calibration range when I'm booted in Snow Leopard. These CRT displays can only manually adjust in range for calibration under Tiger or Leopard. It sounds like if I purchase an IPS based LCD monitor, made by Apple, Dell, or other brands, I will probably be able to manually adjust the display for Gamma 1.8, under Snow Leopard.
I was posing this question about using Gamma 2.2 because if I could color correct for pre press with the 2.2 setting, I could continue to use my old Apple 17" CRT displays and also any web content I create will preview closer in color, on PCs as they will on my Mac.  Maybe my review PDFs will view with similar color on my customers PCs if I work with a 2.2 Gamma setting and instead of 1.8.  For now I know I will keep my printers happy if I continue to work with a monitor that has a 1.8 Gamma setting and a 6500 color temperature setting.  If that must continue to be the standard for pre press, then I will need to get an IPS based LCD monitor that will allow me to adjust in the 1.8 Gamma range while booted in Snow Leopard.

  • Unable to set print options

i cant seem to set print options on a Mac using Mountain Lion.
Where can I find the options such as paper type, resolution and gamma etc.  its available when i print from pages but not from PSE9
    Thanks

Not in pre press industry, just trying to get the best out of my images/printing
The optimum settings for my media type are as previously stated Gamma 2.2 etc, these settings worked perfectly with windows
My recent attempts at printing with my new Mac have delivered dark and flat prints, the only setting I seem to be missing and therefore not amended is the gamma setting, so it's more of an elimination exercise to see if it's anything else that's wrong
I guess I was looking for the same ease of accurate printing with OS X as with Windows, so I do suspect your right in that's it's Epson dropping updates. I did ring them and a chocolate fire guard springs to mind
I am in contact with the media provider (Lyson media proved by Marrutt)  and they are doing me a custom profile that should hopefully resolve the situation
I did Google the issue and a random number of similar problems seem to be out there most related to the latest Mountain Lion and Epson apathy
Anyway thanks for your help and assistance I am most grateful for your time
Let's see how the custom profile works and I will no doubt be in touch if it doesn't
    Thanks Phil

  • Printing one image on a contact sheet with different gamma settings

    Hi,
I am currently using Aperture 1.1, and I would like to print out a contact sheet of one image (each with a different gamma setting) to my Epson R800 printer. Any idea on how to do this? Also, I seem to be somewhat limited in my printing options, is it possible to print out say two or three images on one sheet?

Not without actually duplicating the intended images for the print.

  • Why are the gamma settings different when I watch Final Cut projects on Quicktime?

I added a Gamma Correction filter to my video clips in Final Cut Express 4, and after exporting the project into a Quicktime file, the video shows up brighter and washed out in my Quicktime 7 player. I've even checked the box in Quicktime Preferences to enable Final Cut Studio color, and the video still looks brighter than it should be. What can I do to fix this?
Here is a side-by-side view of the Canvas on left and Quicktime on right.
I am sending this to someone as they will upload it, so to prevent any possible mishaps, my other question is are the settings from what we see from Final Cut the official one? Or is what I'm seeing on Quicktime what I will be seeing if I were to watch it streaming from a website?

It's a huge issue that has existed for years. Legacy QT used to have the Gamma set to 1.8 but since to 2.2. FCP however has no way (other than adding another effect) to adjust this. It does only affect some codecs however. Adobe After Effects has a check box in the project settings for 'Legacy Gamma in Quicktime'.
ProRes422 has a button for Automatic Gamma. One day they might add it to all the codecs - who knows.
In the meantime you could just add a gamma curves effect and adjust it to be 0.3 darker.
