1.83 MBP laggy!!  Random shutdowns..

Hi,
lately i've noticed my mbp has been laggy. It seems a lot slower than when I first bought it,which was about 3 months ago. Sometimes it also restarts itself when running norton's anti virus, copying a dvd, or anything that's lengthy.
At least 3 times an hour when I put my mouse over the menu (genie effect) it pops up and freezes there until I go over it again.
Internet seems slower, and it's still hot as heck. Fans have no humming bcus I don't even think they work!!! but i'm not sure. I never hear them, only on start up.
Any suggestions?
I have a small dent on the top shell casing, that's one reason i'm hesitating to bring it to apple.
Mac Book Pro 1.83 ghz. 2 gb ram 80 gb hd   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Been in your shoes. I have a 1.83 15" and had it do the same things you describe. First off, the ram I upgraded was bad. Apple pulled it out when I sent it back to them for random shut downs. Apple also replaced 7 parts including the logic board. While I wait for new ram to be replaced, I have not had as many random shutdowns with the base 512MB stick that it shipped with from the store. Did your system come with 2GB from Apple or was it an upgrade?
I did try converting a quicktime movie to my ipod via itunes and it heated up so bad it shut down. I also had it shut down while converting a file in compressor. Will try and compress a file with the stock ram and let you know if it was specifically ram related.
Have you run the diagnostic tests from the install DVD? Might tell you if the ram is bad.
Did you buy Applecare?

  • Early 2011 MBP 17 Random Shutdown and Battery Behavior

Hi all, new to the forums here.
I recently purchased a refurbished early 2011 MBP 17' 2.2 Ghz i7 with 8gb and 10.7.5. Out of the box, machine looked great, but I noticed that the power cable was different than the one I had for my early 2011 MBP 15' I have for work. This raised an immediate redflag (buying from a refurb site outside of apple is always a cause for concern IMO) so I abstained from using that charger until I knew a little more. I plugged in the machine and booted it up and everything worked great. The batter was close to 100%, so after charging for approximately 20 min, I unplugged it, and the laptop immediately died. I powered it back on, and the harddrive began to spin for a few seconds, then the same result, total loss of power. Started up again, and I was able to boot into OS X and play around for a bit for a period of time before again, shut down.
For the next few days, same story. I was able to at one point, drain the battery completely and do a full cycle charge. The first time I did this, no change in behavior. Again, a few days later, I was able to drain the battery and perform a full cycle charge, but this time, a major change in behvior. Since the second full cycle charge, I have had absolutely no power problems. I haven't really "pushed" my MBP to see if fully utilizing the CPU/RAM/GPU will produce the similar results I had early, but it appears that everything is working great.
Here a few interesting notes to my situation.
When I was first operating the system (when plugged in, there were no shutdowns, only while on the battery) I pulled up my system report, and noticed that my battery cycle was very low (~5). This seemed odd, because I had opted for a used battery instead of a new one.
Prior to reinstalling Mountain Lion, my volume up key would trigger a few strange events. The screen for briefly get quite bright, then all open applications + the doc and widgets would restart (similar to killing explorer.exe in the windows task manager).
Since performing the fresh install, I have had abslutely no issue with my MBP and I love it, its a beautiful machine. However, as I purchased refurb, I'm hesitant to proceed (I will exceed my return period in ~2 weeks) without knowing my machine is in prime working condition. I have read issues about early 2011 models having issues with batteries and GPUs, but my symptoms were dissimilar to those described by others with those particular issues.
    Any thoughts?
I have a genius appointment tomorrow evening for a general diagnostics check, but if others have experienced these issues, I would appreciate some input.

  • 2012 MBP Retina Random Shutdown

Recently I've started having some issues with my 2012 Macbook Pro Retina. I'll be working as usual then it will suddenly freeze. Once it freezes it takes about 30 seconds then the screen goes dark and the machine turns completely off. I power it back up, and all my windows re-open, no error messages, no popups about improper shutdown or submitting a bug report to Apple.
This is becoming more frequent. It is happening 2-3 times a week now and I've lost hours of coding implementations because of it.
Any ideas on what may be causing this? Hopefully not a hardware failure

The most recent incident happened while I was in Google Docs on Google Chrome. The previous two times it happened I was working in Intellij 14.
The next time it happens I will likely have to take it to the Apple Store to have them run a diagnostics test on it. It is still under Apple Care so if its a hardware failure I should be able to get it replaced at no cost. If its a software issue I guess I'll have to either reformat or wait for the next OS X patch. The issues for me has been worse since the 10.10.2 update but that may just be coincidence.
I would like to know what those codes indicate. For you do you have the same error code in the logs / console. Previous shutdown cause: -128?

  • Random Shutdowns on a MBP Core Duo, Suggestions/Help would be great

I've had two random shutdowns of my mac since purchasing it back in August. The first happened on January 11th, when it said it was at 11-12% power. The second happened about two weeks later, at 23% power. I've been looking around these forums and other pages, and haven't really found anything that has helped so far.
    Details of the first crash:
Open apps- Firefox (5 windows, two had about 20+ tabs open, the rest were single page, and yes, I know it crashes often with that many), Camino (1 window with 5 tabs), and Word 2004, as well as Quicktime open to the iPhone stream.
I had an USB key plugged in, to which I was saving my Word document.
So I was working in Word while in front of the TV and during an interesting bit, didn't do anything for a minute. So, like the many times earlier, it slept the display to conserve power (in "Better Energy Savings" mode). I moved my finger on the trackpad to wake it back up, and it turned back on the backlighting, and then stopped. I thought it had just went back to sleep, but after a few key presses and a check of the light that usually pulsates when it's sleeping (plus the USB key , I found out that the computer had turned off. I let it sit for a while, and when I plugged it back into AC power and turned it on, with my USB key still plugged in, and although it booted to my desktop, the Finder never started (so no desktop icons for anything), unplugging the USB key fixed this and everything returned to normal. I then installed the only update I was missing, one for iChat, restarted, and continued working.
In the second incident, I only had my browsers open, nothing external plugged in, and my displayed was dimmed to the third darkest level. When it was at about 23% power, it once again randomly shut down. This time, I attempted to turn it back on, and nothing happened. After plugging it into AC power, it turned on and once logged in showed a very low (2-6%) power, so I guess it was reporting the power incorrectly?
Anyways, went back to look at the battery exchange on Apple's website. I had checked before when they started it, and was pretty sure mine wasn't covered, and a second check confirmed that. My Mac's serial is W8618091VWX, which isn't covered by the recall.
So, I have a few questions:
    1. Is there a toll-free number I can phone Apple (Canada) at? The only number I've found seems to be only free for those who bought their computer in the last 90 days, which I'm no longer covered by, and haven't been for a while. Talking to someone at Apple would be good.
    2. Otherwise, if I took my computer to an Authorized Service Provider, would they be able to take a look at it and answer some questions? I bought my MBP at a London Drugs and they aren't service providers, so how much would it cost to do this?
    3. Is there a definite cause for these random shutdowns? It seems to vary among other people, so it would be helpful if I could try something to eliminate one of the causes.
    4. Does Tiger report battery levels pretty accurately? In the past when I reached 6% I got a warning and was able to plug it into AC power and had no problems.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Macbook Pro 2.16 GHZ Core Duo, 15.4", 1GB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I had this problem of RSD fixed for a while after having had the battery replaced by Apple, till yesterday, when the MBP suddenly experienced a shutdown during a meeting presentation, while it was connected to the AC power. At the first restart, as coming back from a stop-mode, for a while appeared a warning of low-battery level, with battery level indicator flashing red and showing the empty icon but with a 86% of charge level and a new shut-down definitely put the MBP out of service, no way to have it functioning again. Obviously, AC power was OK, no problem with the microphone or the projector ( I was at the podium of an international meeting) and a lucky precaution ( double save of the same presentation on a friend's twin MBP, that worked correctly) saved the job.
Then, a couple of hour later, my MBP started up normally and everything works fine, with or without MAGsafe connected to AC power, almost up to now.
I've read the post with a link to the procedure for resetting the power controller chip on the mainboard, I'll do it in a minute, hoping that this will help.
    Any further suggestion?

  • Mbp random shutdowns. out of ideas. didnt pay $4000 over for this garbage.

So i had my 1st gen cd mbp for over a year now. almost a year and a 1/2 in fact. I forgot to buy app. Bad mistake, because its super unreliable now. 3 months into ownership, fans stopped working, magnetic catches fail to work so i cant shut my mbp. So i brought it to the service centre. they said there was a screw stuck in the fan which resulted in it not turning. *** did that screw come off? He said he had no idea. Fantastic.
My problem was fixed, but wif it came another problem. my top case was severely misaligned. alot of gaps all over. I brought it to another service centre who claimed they ordered a top case for me, and they would replace it free of charge. And they did, but it didnt resolve any issues. Still alot of gaps. I was told "its like that". I had enough of waiting so i just forced myself to live with it. Get this; i had to live with imperfections on an high end premium mobile computer which cost me over $4000 bucks. Garbage.
Fast forward to abt 2 months ago, my warranty had ended, but the gaps were getting worse. As it was a problem that had existed in the days since my laptop was covered, i called Apple and asked nicely if there was something they could do about it, since it was an issue that was left unresolved from many months back when my warranty was still valid. No problem they said. I was a happy man, for awhile, as you will soon find out why this happiness was shortlived.
I should add at this point, that my mbp has been on the receiving end of a stick of kingston 1gb ram(bumping up my system ram to 2gb) and a replaced battery, and that its working PROPERLY
So i brought it in to 1 of the service centers, and i was quite suprised to discover they actually replaced my top and bottom case. There were still gaps.. but minimal. The CSO told me the same thing; there are bound to have gaps once an mbp has bene taken apart and put together again. Garbage isnt it? I didnt fork out big money for imperfection. But then again, as i said, the gaps were quite minimal and it was on a level i could accept. So i signed for it and i was on my way home.
Since then, i have been on the receiving end of many many many random shutdowns. iStats showed a very high 128deg. c @ heatsink B while the rest of the readings were pretty normal. and then the whole thing would shut down. @ times heatsink B readings were not available on iStat. Sometimes heatsink B disappears altogether.
So i took it back, where after subsequent diagnoses by the techies, said that it was the result of a faulty battery. I told them i had no problems whatsoever before i brought my mbp in.. but they said they were very sure it was a faulty battery. What timing right? Well they gave me a new one free of charge, because i was under the battery exchange program. So, i am into my 2nd battery of my 1 and 1/2 years of mbp ownership.
So it looked ok the 2nd time i brought it back home.. but now its still developing sudden shutdowns. I really dont know what to do now. its not OS based as it happens both in Xp & OSX. It happens whether the power is plugged in or not.
Can it be the ram? But i swear it has not been giving me any problems before.
Seriously can anyhelp? Any suggestions? I cant be going back to the service centre everytime it happens. I need my mac everyday for sch work and etc etc. i am really not compelled to yell @ Apple over the phone. Nobody deserves to be yelled @ for something they didnt do....

Thats what i am doing now. I took out both rams and reinserted. And you know what... it seems fine now. Its like a very irritating bee-otch of a girl friend. 1 moment all nice and sweet. The next shut on you like never before

  • Update to 10.6.7, system random shutdown at mbp mc721.

I check the graphic card setting in gfxCardstatus.
System will be random shutdown by using ATI6490, but force to use intel HD 3000 not so.

    HI kong,
    Welcome to the forums.
Have you recently upgraded/ replaced the computer ram? Have you tried running Apple Hardware Test?
Have you looked at the console log to see what's listed at the time of the shutdown?
Have you tried a SMC reset or a NVRAM reset?

  • MacBook Pro Core Duo 15" Random Shutdown worsening

Have had my MBP for over 18 months now, and any glitches have been software so far.
Two nights ago, I was working on my MBP and suddenly went into an unwakeable sleep. After resetting, I could start up intermittently up to 5 minutes, but it seems to have gotten worse, to where I'm at a point where I can only manage a few seconds of startup before it blacks out again, either off or again, into an unwakeable darkness.
It's the same with just battery, battery & AC, or just AC. It wont stay on long enough for me to start from CD, neither will it stay on to let me Firewire my info/account to another Mac.
At times when I cannot start at all, I can hear a small 'electrical snap' (best description I can give) when pressing the power button, whichever combination of power source I use. I guess this is normal, but I wouldn't notice it usually.
For anyone who've had their MacBook Pro with "Random Shutdown" fixed by Apple out of warranty, could you give an example of cost?
    Thanks
    Sion Joyce

i dread to think how much it would cost, but i was having random shutdown problems as of last week. completely out of the blue
but, the latest Firmware update seems to have solved it! not before i went and bought another battery of course
one thing i have noticed though is the eta on the battery fullness is completely random now, it'll go from having about a minute left to having an hour and 30mins

  • MBP 15" randomly shuts down.

My MBP will at times randomly shut down, i have had the mbp for about one week now and it has probably shut down randomly around a dozen times with minimal use....2 or less hours a day. I wanted to know if there was anything i could do to try and resolve this issue before i contact apple...At times when i reboot the machine after a random shutdown i am greeted with an error saying that the MBP shut down after OSX failed.

I don't buy overpriced RAM because it's easy to removed added RAM, see if problems go away without it, and replace the RAM if that turns out not to be the cause of the problem.
    This is Apple's problem.
Unless the poster has third-party RAM, in which case Apple will first ask him to remove it and test without it. Hence my suggestion to do so.
Some problems need to be handed over to Apple. Some can (and should) be tested first to determine if they even need to be handled by Apple. It's necessary in some cases and can prevent having to send away your computer for no good reason.

  • Help - Thermal or Random Shutdowns

My MBP 15” is outside the warranty and developed what appears to be a thermal shutdown issue. After a period of time it just shuts down. When I restart, it shuts down again very quickly. Each restart results in a shutdown sooner than the last. If the MBP is left off for a longer period of time it will restart, but shuts down after 10 or so minutes.
Being out of warranty and being brave I dismantled it and found nothing outwardly wrong. However, the heat sink compound was pretty dried and cake-like. So I cleaned and replaced the compound and fired it up only to have the problem once again. The compound may have helped a little, but it is not statistically significant. I also pulled the battery backup wire while I dismantled the MBP. I am not sure if that erases the non-volatile memory or not.
The problem shutdowns occur with and without the battery installed. The only way I have been able to work around this problem was to install a third-party fan control program. I set the minimum fan speed to 2500 – 3000 RPMs and life is fine. I have not had a shutdown in the last two weeks since I installed the fan control program. That tells me that the thermal sensors are probably initiating the shutdown. I can’t say what they are measuring is real or not.
However, I can’t recall ever hearing the fans before the MBP shuts down. I hear them now with the fan program running, but I can’t ever recall hearing them before the install. Any thoughts?

Have you run something like iStat Pro... just to get an idea of what the temp sensor readings are? It's possible you may have just a faulty sensor... Something like iStat Pro:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/status/istatpro.html
    or Temperature Monitor:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19994
... will give you the reported temps of a number of components. If you have a faulty sensor... it should be easy to detect (for example, if your heat sink shows 120 C but both your processors show around 60 C and your other heatsink slightly lower... you'll know the first heat sink probably has a bad sensor). The first generation MacBooks had a problem with random shutdowns due to a faulty heatsink sensor. Apple was able to put out a firmware update that basically ignored the faulty sensor... but for those that had the problem, if they run one of the above programs... they can still see the faulty readings... only their machines no longer shut down as they are now ignored.
You should first determine your processor and heatsink temps... just to make sure you actually are not experiencing an overheat problem vs. just a faulty sensor.

  • Random shutdown on a 15" macbook pro

Hello, my macbook pro has started to randomly shutdown. The battery does not seem to charge much beyond 0% either. Here is the battery information from System Profiler -- is it likely just a battery issue?
    Model Information:
    Serial Number: Sony-ASMB012-356a-75f4
    Manufacturer: Sony
    Device name: ASMB012
    Pack Lot Code: 0003
    PCB Lot Code: 0000
    Firmware Version: 102a
    Hardware Revision: 0400
    Cell Revision: 0303
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 0
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 1674
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 309
    Condition: Good
    Battery Installed: Yes
    Amperage (mA): 1945
    Voltage (mV): 11875

It's picking a particularly bad way of telling you - your MBP should never just shut down - bug given your charge capacity seems significantly down from what you should be able to achieve I'd say yes, it looks to be a battery issue.
    How old is your Mac?
Your battery should retain about 80% of its charge capacity after 300 cycles, and since you only have 309 cycles, your battery seems to be much below that.
If you've an Apple Store nearby and you're under warranty or AppleCare you may want to ask about it - they might replace your battery at no charge, depending upon a wide variety of factors.

  • 20-30% battery life then random shutdown

    hello all,
    MBP age: 32 months
    Cycles: 764
    Original Capacity: 6300 mAh
    Current Capacity: 2652 mAh
I've been having random shutdowns on my computer over the past 1 month. It started to happen at 10% gradually increasing.
Is it time to bite the bullet and get a new battery. Looking around the internet it seems 700 cycles is a lot. The common advice seems to be saying huge degradation after 300.
Does anyone know the average life span of the MBP battery?

    Hi gain, Paul,
For a long time, it was hard to even find a third-party MBP battery. I see few reports here of people using them. One factor that made me shy of third-party offerings was that one of my most trusted parts vendors did not offer a battery for the MBP although they did so for most older Mac notebooks.
Now that vendor is listing MBP batteries:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/BAP17MBP66RS/
    (you did say 17", right?)
How well they work, I can't say. I can say that, with other products, this firm has provided me with excellent support and service.
Usually their "hi-cap" batteries cost more than an Apple replacement; this one is less.
OWC does business internationally but I have no idea how the exchange rate, shipping, duties and VAT would affect your cost. Also, should it not work, returns would be harder from the Emerald Isle than from my part of the world.
If the problems of using an overseas vendor are too daunting, I'd go with buying one from Apple.
If you have a link to the battery you saw, post it and I'll take a look at its specs.
    Regards,
    Allan

  • Random shutdown issues, battery, and overheating.

    Hi,
About two weeks ago, I've experienced random shutdowns on my MacBook Pro (Bought it on October).
I am not sure if all this problem was about battery issues. First I've charged it for the first time and only lasted 1 hour. then I recalibrated it and now it last 2 hours and a bit more.
Now, apart from having battery issue, I've experienced random shutdowns from my laptop. I had installed all the available updates for my laptop.
Reading all the posted topics about heat, shutdowns and batteries, maybe my problem is just overheating.
So I've installed the fan control, adjusted the speed to 3500 rpm and worked fine.
But one thing came to my mind:
Is it safe for the fans to actually force the speed all time? if so, their cycle life could be shorter?.
On either case, what if the MBP actually has a defective factory error and if I still be using it, it could completely "melt from the inside"?
Does the battery itself has something to do with the overheating itself?
Maybe I should call for a laptop replacement as well.
    Any suggestions?

Your Mac will very likely last as long as you own it or otherwise choose to upgrade. The heat issues posted here are not entirely valid. With that said, you might want to verify that your battery isn’t on the recall list by viewing the link provided below.
    Excerpt:
"The affected batteries have model number A1175 and a 12-digit serial number that ends with U7SA, U7SB or U7SC. To view the model and serial numbers located on the bottom of the battery, you must remove the battery from the computer. The battery serial number is located above the barcode. See photos below. Only batteries within the noted serial number ranges need to be exchanged."

  • Random Shutdown plagues Macbook Pro C2D as well?

    Hello everyone,
I know the Macbooks suffer from random shutdowns, but I thought this issue was fixed in the recent models. Apparently, it's still a problem since my brand new macbook pro core 2 duo exhibits random shutdowns when it gets too hot. Yes, I have all my stuff up to date. No, the new firmware does not apply to the Core 2 Duo MBPs.
My question is, is this still a known problem? I haven't really hard of Macbook Pros suffering from this, is this also common with Macbook Pros?
My Macbook does not get extremely hot to the touch, contrary to some of the "Hot" threads on this board. But, I guess it's enough to short the circuit that causes immediate shutdowns. It's easy enough to avoid, but I'd like to push my Macbook to it's fullest without worry of shutdown.

Well, this is what I've found out ...don't know if that will mean anything to you, but does not seem very good to me. Note that this was prior to the date I received my MBP.

First Crash --> computer suddenly OFF !
i've had 5 or six crashes since I received my MBP on Nov. 15th. Apple told me it must be a hardware problem. I have other stuff to read from the console if you're interested caus' quite frankly this does not make a lot of sense to me.

  • Random Shutdowns, but NO PATTERNS!

I have only experienced about three random shutdowns. I thought the first two random shutdowns occurred because I didn't have the updated software. I did install them, at least the ones that I could find on the Support Downloads page and whatever Software Update told me to download. However, I experienced one a couple of hours ago! Totally random. I noticed that Adium was acting up and crashed many times recently and I was on it during the crash. Should I bring my MBP to a Genius Bar ASAP? There is no pattern on the crashes, at least nothing I've noticed so far. Is there a way for a Genius to check if my system is ok???

Well, I'll post parts of the crash reports that are available:

  • Random shutdowns since battey update!

    Hi.
I've had whine issues with my MBP 1st gen. which were fixed by a logic board replacement. I updated with the battery update recently and some bad bahaviour has happened since.
Namely I've had two random shutdowns which never happened before.
The first occasion I dismissed since I had it on high processor load and when the MBP shutdown I put it down to overheating.
    Today the story was different.
The MBP was idling with some normal tasks. I unplugged the machine to cycle the battery as I do once a week or so. I calibrated formally last week after the battery update.
Approximately a minute after unplugging, the MBP activated both its fans to high speed. The processor load on both cores was under 10% so it was not due to processor load or rogue non responding process. I waited and the fans started to wind down from their high speed in the gradual way they normally do.
A minute or so later for no apparent reason the machine just shutdown all of a sudden.
The battery appears to be draining alot quicker. For example in the last ten minutes since I've been slowly typing this the battery % has gone from 90% to 75% with CPU loads under 10%.
I'm calibrating the battery again today but the sudden shutdowns really shake one's confidence in the machine in a deep way as you may all understand.

Did you Reset the PMU (power management unit)
    between re-calibrations?
When you re-calibrate make sure you leave it more
than 5 hours draining without power, I generally aim
for 7 hours before re-connecting power.
It could be worth running the Hardware tests from
Install DVD1 (hold down d at boot) and see if it
reports any SNS (sensor) or MTR (motor) problems.
I calibrated formally ie. 6 hours after normal power related shutdown and wake from deep sleep mode.
I haven't reset the PMU but will try that later. I want to try and diagnose the problem as well as possible before trying lots of random things.
I have noticed that my battery is down to 90% of full capacity ie ~4900 mAh (5500 mAh is the nominal when new). I only have 122 cycles in the 14 months I have owned this. It's mostly on AC power but nevertheless it never occured prior to the battery update (Ockham's razor).
